Disk utility create disk image stuck

I am trying to create a disk image on my new external hard drive, and the progress bar has been stuck in the same place for 9 hours. Since this is a big external hard drive, I was making a disk image of 150 gb, but even with something of that size it shouldn't have taken this long. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on and how best to fix it?

Also, can someone explain the difference bewteen a read-only image and a master image?

Disk Utility create new image question

In the side bar of Disk Utility, it lists the devices and then, indented, the names of the disks. If I want to create an image of an existing DVD, does it matter whether I choose "Upper Superdrive" or the disk title?

Disk utility - create disk image

Creating image works with most disks, but not with DVDs made with my TIVO
With TIVO disks, a shell of about 32 K with no content is produced within a few seconds. Same result with all settings of the utility.
Is there an incompatibility here?

Does Disk Utility show the correct info (Format, Used, Number of Files, Number of Folders) at the bottom of the window when the DVD is selected? Does it shoe one volume on the drive? Do all the VIDEO_TS files show up (with correct sizes) in Finder? If you have the MPEG-2 Playback Component for QuickTime you should be able to play the .VOB files in the Preview window of Get-Info (Cmd-I).
If Finder shows thing OK, you can drag the VIDEO_TS folder onto DVD Imager

Disk Utility - Verify Disk Permissions / Repair

I run Disk Utility > Verify Disk Permissions with this rsult:
Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
The following repair was successful.
A few minutes later I run Verify Disk Permissions again with the SAME result:

What does it mean and how can I stop this error?

There is nothing in that message that requires repairing. That is why it keeps showing up.
The permission database has to be updated every time the system is updated. If they miss a change that they have made in the system, it will get flagged as you see, but doesn't mean anything is wrong.
That KnowledgeBase article also must be updated to reflect the things they missed.
All that message is saying is that the directory derby is now replaced with a link to another directory (the l vs the d). However, mine doesn't have a link. Did you install anything that might have updated derby?
If you open Terminal and enter this code, can you post the line that has derby on it?ls -al /usr/share/
I'm repairing permissions now to see what pops up for me, but that will take a little while.
Edit: I looked into the Derby directory and Derby is a Relational Database Management System used by Apache. So, did you install something that modified Apache, PHP, mySQL or something like that? It might have altered the link.

Hi. I’ve been experiencing some mildly squirrelly behaviour with my system (vide infra) so decided to repair the two internal hard drives on my computer. The primary hard drive is a 74.53 GB ST380013AS that came with the system; its S.M.A.R.T. Status is “verified” and Disk Utility repairs permissions just fine. However, the second internal drive (Maxtor 6L250S0, 233.76 GB, lower Bay, Journaled HFS+), despite being verified by S.M.A.R.T. status and apparently running OK, fails to unmount when I ask Disk Utility to repair it- I get the above error message in red. I have repaired this disk with DiskWarrior (v3.03) and all appears to run AOK. Can anyone tell me why I cannot get Disk Utility to run on this secondary (eg, non-startup) disk? I have tried many times and the error is reproducible. Thank you!
G5 1.6GHz PPC, 1 GB RAM, running OS 10.4.6

He said: "Use the lsof command to find the open files on a volume that does not unmount or eject. Open Terminal, located in /Applications/Utilities. Type: sudo lsof | grep Leave a space after the p in grep, then drag the icon of the problem volume to the Terminal window. The pathname for the volume is pasted in for you; press Return. Then enter your administrative password at the prompt, and press Return."
At this point, one now has a list of the open files/processes on the volume that will not unmount. You can use Activity Monitor to terminate these processes if you wish, and then the volume will unmount as it should.

My Mac crashed today for the first time in the seven years I have owned it. I was working in Photoshop. It had been getting slower and slower in Photoshop. Now I can't start the computer at all. You may have had a hard drive failure. Have you been hearing any unusual sounds? Have you been getting messages about a full hard drive?

Disk Utility - Create encrypted disk images super sloooow

Trying to create encrypted disk images via Disk Utility on my iMac (i7 8GB) is super-slow in 10.8. It worked quite fast in 10.7, but now it's super-slow and doesn't even seem to ever finish.
I've tried re-installing 10.8 with no difference.
Anyone else having trouble with this? Even a small dmg (~200MB) doesn't seem to work.
Unencrypted images seem to work OK (if not a little slow).
I realize that the encryption process will be slower but something is definately wrong with 10.8 disk utility in this regard. I have 1TB+ free space. I have tried with another user account as well.
My task was: (new disk image, read-write, 128bit encryption)

Have you tried using Disk Utility from within the recovery mode? (Hold down CMD and R when booting)
I used to have this problem but creating them this way really improved the time.

Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs

I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.

Disk Utility: Creating a new blank image receiving "file too large" error.

I'm trying to create a 10GB non-encrypted, non-compressed RW blank image via the disk utility. The DU runs for a few minutes then barfs out "file too large" error. I have over 30GB free on my HDD. I tried with a smaller size of 6GB to no avail. Also tried unsuccessfully to create from a file (about 4 GB). My ultimate goal is to create a case-insensitive image to run an extremely important program needed for high priority work productivity (i.e. WoW). Thanks in advance for any advice! You will be my new best friend if you help me resolve this. =D

Is this to/on your boot drive, or an external drive?
Have you done any Disk/OS maintenance lately?
We might see if there are some big temp files left or such...
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?

Disk Utility - create ISO Data DVD image for burning?

Which are the exact options in Disk Utility that I need to select, in order to create an ISO DVD Data image that will be readable by PCs and Macs alike?
I have looked on the web and in the help but am none the wiser due to lack of an explanation of the options
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled),...,MS-DOS (FAT)
Partitions:Single partition - Apple Partition Map,...,Single Partition CD/DVD with ISO data
If you cannot point me in the direction of some decent documentation, please just tell me which options I need to select to create an ISO Data DVD

Try this link.
Basically, you can drag a folder into the list on the left. Then, with the folder selected, click New Disk Image from the toolbar at the top (not sure of the exact wording, but it's something along those lines). Make sure to select ISO from the pop-up menu.

Disk Utility: Create image fails with input/output error

Starting to create an image and saving it into an external hard drive (MacOS extended Journaled).
It starts after less than 60 secs it comes out with an error : Failed to create the image (input/output error)

If you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it. Disc image files can be very problematical when it comes to trying to restore the backup. Furthermore, you cannot boot from a disc image. If the disc image file becomes corrupted then you have no backup.
I would like to propose that you think about a better way to backup your drive. You can clone the drive to your backup drive. It's easy to do using Disk Utility's Restore feature. A clone backup is not only bootable but you have direct access to all the files on the backup.
In order to make a bootable clone open Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for +duplicating a disk+. Click on "Duplicating a disk" at the top of the list of articles. Follow the directions.

Disk Utility - Create Image Fails

Hello all -
I'm trying to make an image of one of my hard drives as a back up. I've followed the instructions in Disk Utility help, but when I click "Save" to try to create the image I get a failure message "Unable to create <Disk Name>. (Resource Busy)".
I've tried saving to the destination with a new folder, that did not solve the problem. No other applications are running and both the source and destination disks are mounted and appearing on my desktop. The source is a USB connected drive, destination is a firewire drive, and I can read and write to both the source and destination disks.
Anyone have any idea what this failure message means and how to correct the problem? Thanks - Randy

Disk Utility: Create Image from Volume Without Unused Space

I'm trying to create a disk image from a mounted volume (flash memory in a video camera) but I don't want to write to it later, it's just for archiving. The problem is that the size of the original volume is 16 GB, so every image I create is huge, even if there is less than a 1 GB used.
For example, I only have two short clips on there, about 1.1 GB used. When I create a new .dmg from the volume, the file is 5.28 GB and when I mount it it tells me the size of the volume is 15.3 GB. Clearly I understand why this is happening, it's creating a bit for bit copy of the original volume, but I don't need all that space since I'm never going to write to it.
In disk utility it won't let me resize the image (it's grayed out). What do I do?

I actually don't understand why this is happening (when I do this the created disk image only uses the space it needs) but you can get around it as follows. First create a blank read/write disk image to the size you want and then restore the memory card to that image.

Disk Utility: new disk image takes forever- computer unresponsive-HELP!

I'm using Disk Utility to create a "new disk image from folder." The folder is on one Lacie exernal usb drive, and the target location is another Lacie usb drive (150 GB free).
The folder is 55GB. After 3+ hours, the activity window still shows "creating image" though the progress bar has changed from blue to pulsating blue/white stripes and I have the spinning beach ball of death.
Computer is unresponsive and the only way to terminate is to press the pwr button until everything shuts off.
Why is disk utility hanging like this? (or does it take more than 3 hours to create an image 55GB in size?
I've had no issues with previously creating images, though these were all 15GB or smaller.

USB takes forever....the reason I got a Firewire Ext. Drive.
It's soooo much easier to make a clone doing the following.....
I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on PPC Macs but are on some Intel Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on PPC Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

DIsk Utility, encrypted disk image

I cannot create an encrypted disk image. I have searched through the discussion forums here but have not found an answer. After I select the name, location, image format, encryption and I hit save, I get an error that says "Unable to create '[file name].dmg'. (Resource busy)". I've tried different locations, image format and encryption, but I keep getting the same message. Any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks.
NB: I want to create the disk image so that I can encrypt a few files with sensitive information. I do not want to use filevault, as I understand that it has downsides (e.g., free space needed to turn on and off, and backup with TM).

1. Open the Disk Utility application. (If you don't know where it is, search for it in the spotlight.)
2. At the top of the Disk Utility window, you will see several icons. Click on the one labeled "New Image". Before you do this, make sure that none of the drives on the left column (including "Macintosh HD") are selected.
3. A new window opens. It asks you for the name you want to give the new disk, and where you want to save it to (you can choose to save it on the desktop). It will also ask you for the volume size of the new disk (the default setting is 100MB, but you can give it any size you want). It also asks you for the volume format, encryption (128- or 256-bit; 128 should be enough, unless you want to make it more secure, but compromise a bit of speed), partition (there is no need to partition; in fact, many recommend no partition at all), and image format (if you plan to frequently add and delete files on your encrypted disk, "sparse bundle disk image" is recommended".
4. Click "create". It will ask you to create a password for your disk image.
5. The new disk image should appear on your desktop (or other destination you chose). Double-click on the image to open it. It will ask you for your password. Enter the password you selected. You can choose to save the password on your keychain. That defeats the purpose of encrypting the disk image, since anyone who gains access to your computer will not have to enter the password to open the disk image and see its contents.
