Disk Utility - create ISO Data DVD image for burning?
Which are the exact options in Disk Utility that I need to select, in order to create an ISO DVD Data image that will be readable by PCs and Macs alike?
I have looked on the web and in the help but am none the wiser due to lack of an explanation of the options
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled),...,MS-DOS (FAT)
Partitions:Single partition - Apple Partition Map,...,Single Partition CD/DVD with ISO data
If you cannot point me in the direction of some decent documentation, please just tell me which options I need to select to create an ISO Data DVD
Thanks
Try this link.
Basically, you can drag a folder into the list on the left. Then, with the folder selected, click New Disk Image from the toolbar at the top (not sure of the exact wording, but it's something along those lines). Make sure to select ISO from the pop-up menu.
Also try this article to convert a DMG to ISO.

Disk Utility: Creating a new blank image receiving "file too large" error.
Hello All!
I'm trying to create a 10GB non-encrypted, non-compressed RW blank image via the disk utility. The DU runs for a few minutes then barfs out "file too large" error. I have over 30GB free on my HDD. I tried with a smaller size of 6GB to no avail. Also tried unsuccessfully to create from a file (about 4 GB). My ultimate goal is to create a case-insensitive image to run an extremely important program needed for high priority work productivity (i.e. WoW). Thanks in advance for any advice! You will be my new best friend if you help me resolve this. =D

Have you created images before successfully?
Is this to/on your boot drive, or an external drive?
Have you done any Disk/OS maintenance lately?

Disk Utility Freeze when using New Image
Has anybody experienced the following?:
my system:
Brand new Mac Pro 8-core 2.66GHz
24GB RAM
Snow Leopard 10.6.3 freshly installed
Apple SuperDrive DVD
I am in the process to install a lot of software and I like to make Disk Image of the software DVD to make things quicker to install.
Now what happens is that as soon as I select New Image from Disk Utility (after selecting the DVD on the left menu), the New Image progress window appears and then Disk Utility freezes. The disk image is being created in the background, but the progress window DOES NOT show the disk image status and eventually I have to OPTION-APPLE ESC from Disk Utility.
What I have tried is:
. delete plist for Disk Utility in Preferences
. repair permissions in SAFE BOOT mode
After that Disk Utility/New Image will work the first time as expected, and then the next time I am getting the same problem.
Any ideas what I could try to diagnose/fix this problem?
Thank you!Thanks for your feedback.
As far as making a disk image or not, yes it takes some times to create it... longer? I am not sure because when you install a software there is a back and forth reading/writing, whereas when you create your disk image it does the reading and writing in a linear fashion... anyway to me the big benefit is when you have more than one disk part of an install (Apple FCS, Adobe CS, etc...) once you have created all your disk image, it will install everything automatically without having to feed each disc... and usually I have to do a fresh install later on... and finally it gives you a backup of your software...
Thanks again. -
Using Disk Utility to copy Application DVD or Cd's
I've always used Toast to make a copy of a software CD or DVD that I've purchased. I store these offsite. Some DVD DL (6-7GB) have problems in Toast. I've started to use Disk Utility - Disk Image. The question I have is should I use read only or DVD/CD master?
Before you ask, the license policy on most/some software allow the purchaser to do this.
G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.8)<font "size=+1">Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

How do I create a data set ready for a batch input session
Hi:
I don't know how to create a data set ready for an BATCH-INPUT SESSION.I know that with the function BDC_INSERT make de input online, but my requirement is that generate the data set and left to the user get in de SM35 transaccion and decide to him if it's execute or not. I have all the information in a BDCDATA table.
Any clue would be great!!You just have to do:
BDC_OPEN_GROUP (Open new batch)
BUILD BDC DATA (Your own code)
BDC_INSERT (Insert BDC data you have built in step 2)
BDC_CLOSE_GROUP (Close batch)
This will just create a new batch and it can be processed in SM35.
To build BDC data:
LOOP AT your_input_table.
<<here you have to use the code generated from recording in trasaction SHDB>> (i.e. bdc_dynpro and bdc_field performs)
ENDLOOP. -

Can I just close disk utility without risking data loss or drive problems?
I am using disk utility's restore to clone a hard drive to an external drive but it is taking forever (telling me 3 days) and the cancel button won't work. Can I just close disk utility without risking data loss or drive problems? Force quit? Anyone have experience with this?
- GeorgeI spoke with a tech advisor through applecare. Theoretically the source drive should not be damaged if you quit the disk utility application while cloning your drive. More obviously, the destination volume will be unreadable and require a re-format, but in general no major damage will occur. I have quit the disk utility and restrarted, the source drive works as expected, while the desitination shows, "unreadable"
Hope this helps anyone else with a similar question.

Disk Utility stops responding when creating a CD/DVD image
I'm using a PowerBook G4 (Intel processor) and recently updated from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard.
I've been copying some personal DVDs (Non-commercial so not copy protected) with Disk Utility.
It was working just fine under 10.5.8, and for the first DVD after updating.
However now when I try to create an image from the DVD, the dialog box opens as though it is
reading from the DVD (As usual) but the progress bar doesn't move.
When I try to cancel, the spinning beach ball comes up and end up having to force quit.
I have tried with various DVDs but the result is the same.
I have shutdown and restarted, and even reset the P-RAM for good measure, but to no effect.
There is no Disk Utility file in the preferences folder so I was unable to trash preferences.
FYI: I bought the computer in Japan so I am using the Japanese OS, but I expect that should
make no difference to the problem.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Burned DVDs won't mount/read but seen by Disk Utility as containing data
Hi,
I've got a problem. I have about 200 burned DVDs which were created using my LG VHS/DVD recorder/player. I have used these same DVDs to burn from my external LaCie DVD buner with my PPC G5 running Tiger and my LG Blu-Ray burning with my MacBook running Leopard and those burns plays fine on all 3 devices. However, neither the LaCie DVD burner nor the LG Blu-Ray burner seem able to read/mount the DVDs created with the LG VHS/DVD recorder/player although the G5 and the MacBook, both using Disk Utility, can see that there is data and the size of it on each disk. I am also unable to create a disk image for some reason as it begins but halts saying there's an I/O error. I need to get the content of these disks onto Hard Drives to rip and encode. How do I get the computers to mount these disks which they clearly see are not blank?
Thank youTry opening them with mpegStreamclip:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you may also need the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
You should be able to convert them to mpeg2 which is the standard format of a video DVD. -
Disk utility creating .cdr and .iso
We have thousands of DVDs created in house at our company. We are using Disk Utility to create images of all these DVDs for archiving to tape. We select the format as CD/DVD master and no encryption. The odd thing however is that it seems randomly Disk Utility will create a .cdr and a .iso file in one step. Anyone know a reason DU would do this, and how to stop it? Thanks
copied this from disk utility log:

Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs
I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

Disk utility - create disk image
Creating image works with most disks, but not with DVDs made with my TIVO
With TIVO disks, a shell of about 32 K with no content is produced within a few seconds. Same result with all settings of the utility.
Is there an incompatibility here?
Thanks for any help on this.

G-5, dual 2.0 PowerPC Mac OS X (10.4.7) iLife6, 2.5 G of RAM, 40 G of free disk spaceDoes Disk Utility show the correct info (Format, Used, Number of Files, Number of Folders) at the bottom of the window when the DVD is selected? Does it shoe one volume on the drive? Do all the VIDEO_TS files show up (with correct sizes) in Finder? If you have the MPEG-2 Playback Component for QuickTime you should be able to play the .VOB files in the Preview window of Get-Info (Cmd-I).
If Finder shows thing OK, you can drag the VIDEO_TS folder onto DVD Imager

Disk Utility create new image question
In the side bar of Disk Utility, it lists the devices and then, indented, the names of the disks. If I want to create an image of an existing DVD, does it matter whether I choose "Upper Superdrive" or the disk title?
Also, can someone explain the difference bewteen a read-only image and a master image?

Disk Utility: Create image fails with input/output error
Starting to create an image and saving it into an external hard drive (MacOS extended Journaled).
It starts after less than 60 secs it comes out with an error : Failed to create the image (input/output error)If you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it. Disc image files can be very problematical when it comes to trying to restore the backup. Furthermore, you cannot boot from a disc image. If the disc image file becomes corrupted then you have no backup.
I would like to propose that you think about a better way to backup your drive. You can clone the drive to your backup drive. It's easy to do using Disk Utility's Restore feature. A clone backup is not only bootable but you have direct access to all the files on the backup.
In order to make a bootable clone open Disk Utility. Select Disk Utility Help from the Help menu. Search for +duplicating a disk+. Click on "Duplicating a disk" at the top of the list of articles. Follow the directions. -
Disk Utility - Create Image Fails
Hello all -
I'm trying to make an image of one of my hard drives as a back up. I've followed the instructions in Disk Utility help, but when I click "Save" to try to create the image I get a failure message "Unable to create <Disk Name>. (Resource Busy)".
I've tried saving to the destination with a new folder, that did not solve the problem. No other applications are running and both the source and destination disks are mounted and appearing on my desktop. The source is a USB connected drive, destination is a firewire drive, and I can read and write to both the source and destination disks.
Anyone have any idea what this failure message means and how to correct the problem? Thanks - RandyIf you don't mind I'd like to discourage you from backing up a drive onto a disc image file no matter where you plan to save it.
