Disk Utility create new image question

In the side bar of Disk Utility, it lists the devices and then, indented, the names of the disks.  If I want to create an image of an existing DVD, does it matter whether I choose "Upper Superdrive" or the disk title?

Also, can someone explain the difference bewteen a read-only image and a master image?

  • Disk utility - restoring a .cdr question

i hate the format of the apple discussion forums now.
not sure if this is the proper place since there is no "community" to discuss Disk Utility and the "restore" function, which is not specific to snow leopard, but since i'm still running 10.6.8, i'll go ahead an post this here.
in the past, i've successfuly restored disk images onto dedicated hard drive partitions.  i do this for a variety of reasons, namely to have working backups of certain DVD's, such as my install DVD's when internal super drive stopped functioning.
however, i just tried this following what i think are the proper instructions, but now i can't restore the disk image and can't find the answer anywhere online.
    basically:
    1)  i'm going into disk utility, hooking up an external dvd drive and copying a playable DVD of some live music i purchased
    2)  i'm choosing "create new image" and under compression, choosing "dvd/cd master"
the problem is that the resulting file comes out as ".cdr" and not .dmg.  i haven't tried it using some type of compression, but for some reason Disk Utility won't let me "restore" from a ".cdr" file, only a .dmg or .iso.
i've tried changing the extensions.  i've tried converting (within disk utility) the .cdr to .dmg, and i get the same "invalid argument" error as always.
the only thing i haven't done is tried making another .dmg using some type of compression, or read-only, read-write format.
it would seem to me that choosing cd/dvd master is the proper category.
does anyone know why a .cdr will mount, but cannot be used for restore???  and why making a disk image of a disk i own defaults to .cdr and not .dmg?
    thanks.

Hmmm.... I've just realised that none of the images I've created recently will verify properly. They all get to the end of the first stage (block checksum of partition #1) and then fail with "internal error". The only one which passes the verification process is the very first one which I created a long time ago. That one seems to complete two stages of block verifications (for 2 partitions) then one "file checksum".
If I try to select a disk image and use "Open Disk Image" (from the right-click menu) I get an error saying "Unable to attach [image-name].dmg. No mountable file systems." This happens with every disk image I've created, apart from the very first one.

  • Am being prompted to enter security questions when making a purchase on my new IPad.  I don't believe I have ever setup security questions on my apple id.  How to I create new security questions?

I am being prompted to enter security questions when making a purchase on my new IPad.  I don't believe I have ever setup security questions on my apple id.  I have tried logging into my apple id and have chosen the security and priviacy settings to set up security questions.  However I am prompted to enter answers to security questions and am told they don't match.  How to I create new security questions or reset them?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • When I enter my password to purchase a song, I need to create new security questions. Whenever I finish making thm and submit them, a box says "An error has occurred. We could not save your changes." How do I make it go away?

When I enter my password to purchase a song, I need to create new security questions. When I finish writing them out and I hit submit, a box comes up with the words: "An error has occurred. We could not save your changes." What does that mean and how do I make it go away?

Potentially the issue may be the combination of actual distance and the presence of any Wi-Fi interference at the location of the AirPort Express that may be the culprit here. The bottom line is you would want the Express to be within a 25+ dB range of the Extreme to be sure that it can consistently stay connected to it.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then see if this user tip helps you get the questions reset :https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support :http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then try Apple ID Account Security
or try ringing the number for Apple  in your country and ask to talk to the Account Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then the steps half-way down this page give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • Disk Utility: Creating a new blank image receiving "file too large" error.

    Hello All!
I'm trying to create a 10GB non-encrypted, non-compressed RW blank image via the disk utility. The DU runs for a few minutes then barfs out "file too large" error. I have over 30GB free on my HDD. I tried with a smaller size of 6GB to no avail. Also tried unsuccessfully to create from a file (about 4 GB). My ultimate goal is to create a case-insensitive image to run an extremely important program needed for high priority work productivity (i.e. WoW). Thanks in advance for any advice! You will be my new best friend if you help me resolve this. =D

  • Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs

I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.

Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

  • Disk Utility - create ISO Data DVD image for burning?

Which are the exact options in Disk Utility that I need to select, in order to create an ISO DVD Data image that will be readable by PCs and Macs alike?
I have looked on the web and in the help but am none the wiser due to lack of an explanation of the options
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled),...,MS-DOS (FAT)
Partitions:Single partition - Apple Partition Map,...,Single Partition CD/DVD with ISO data
If you cannot point me in the direction of some decent documentation, please just tell me which options I need to select to create an ISO Data DVD
    Thanks

    Try this link.
Basically, you can drag a folder into the list on the left. Then, with the folder selected, click New Disk Image from the toolbar at the top (not sure of the exact wording, but it's something along those lines). Make sure to select ISO from the pop-up menu.
Also try this article to convert a DMG to ISO.
