Disk Utility + Disk Warrior

I recently purchased DiskWarrior as I though it would be able to awaken my currently deceased Firewire Harddrive. Sadly it did not but after installing I ran the Disk Utility "Verify Disk Permissions" then "repaired the disk permissions" I then Veryified the Disk. This came out with negative results!
I then asked Disk Warrior for a graph of my HD
I recieved one and this aswell had negative results!
In Disk Utility it says I have to run the computer from my boot CD.
Having bought this laptop over 1 year ago I have mislead the CDs but still the have CD's from my iBook G4 would these be of any use?
Any help is much thanked . . .

Restore CDs are computer (and model) specific. The iBook set won't work. Contact Apple customer support and you'll be able to purchase a new set - have your credit card and computer's serial number ready.

Get onto the integrated iOS + Mac OS and end support for "legacy" Mac 10.8 and earlier.
Force older hardware users like me to upgrade to new hardware which is where $$ are.
Make apps work across tablets, phone, and computer with similar (though not the "same" app, but able to read and use the same file format).
    Simplify.
I don't think anyone incl. Microsoft knew Windows 8.1 was going to be a free upgrade, I didn't and read that it would be more like $30.
No OS is ready for everyone on the day it is launched. iOS 7 is now 7.04 and climbing, Mac OS tends to really not be ready until the last patch and version is out, often a year or more after it was first issued. Ship it, then plan to fix the bugs left in or that surface.
www.macperformanceguide.com is saying "No" to Maverick for now. Of course there will be no "No" on new Mac Pro 2013 6,1 when those ship (Late Jan? )

  • Disk Utility 'Disk Image from Folder' looses file create date?

    Hi,
I have been working on creating backups that maintain the files' create dates. I have found the following anomoly using Disk Utility.
If I create a Disk Image From Folder, the create dates of all files are changed to be the same as the last modify dates. Not what I want.
If I creat a Blank Disk Image, and then using Finder to copy the files to the Disk Image, the create dates remain unchanged.
I can then burn the backup CD's with the Disk Image and the files' create dates are maintained. So, future restore from the backup CD will contain the original files' create dates.
Does anyone know if Disk Utility's Create Disk Image from Folder is supposed to loose the files' create dates? What other file attributes are being lost? Mac OS X maintains all of these attributes, and create dates via Finder copies, I would expect the Disk Utility Create Disk Image from Folder to do the same.

To follow up on this post, I know at least part of the answer. The difference between the two becomes clearer if you read the documentation (man pages) for hdiutil and asr. Image 1 will be created in file mode, whereas image 2 will be in block mode, ie bypassing the file system. Image 1 will consist of a series of files, whereas image 2 will contain a series of blocks, mirroring the original layout of the hard disk.
Technically the latter should be faster to restore (in block mode), although Apple recommend the first procedure (see man page for hdiutil). I haven't seen any evidence that images created in block mode can be mounted or restored, although you might be able to burn such images to a optical disks if applicable.
As I've pointed out in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1508199&tstart=0) I believe that this functionality should not be offered in disk utility, and I consider it a serious bug.

  • Disk Utility, disk image help

I want to burn a disk image onto a disc using disk utility, however i dont know how to and my blank disk is smaller than the disk image size. SO i need to compress it. Can anyone tell me what to do and how i can burn a disc image onto a disc which is too small?

Not all disk images are compressed, but you can't make a compressed disc (not with standard software).  You can store a compressed disk image on a disc, but it won't behave like a normal disc (e.g., you'd need to mount the disc, then mount the disk image stored on it separately).  If you want to create a normal, mountable disc, you either need to get a physical disc of the appropriate size and burn the uncompressed image onto it (Disk Utility has a Burn item in one of its menus), or you'll need to reduce the size of the uncompressed disk image to fit the size of the disc you have.

  • Files disappeared after running disk utility disk repair but still space still remains. how do i recover the files?

stupidly repaired my external hard disk without backing it up via mavericks's disk utility repair option.
After the repair, all my folders disappeared but at the same time I noticed that the disk space still remained the same. Is there anyway to get these files back? My thesis is on it.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Disk Utility Disk Repair

When I verify the hard drive using disk utility, it says it needs to be repaired. But when I start up from the install disk and run disk utility, trying to repair it, it says that the disk does not need to be repaired. But I'm still having problems getting my computer to read a CD I'm trying to upload. What should I do?

If you're referring to the same boot drive, that's possible.
It's extremely difficult to do a complete verification on the disk that you're running from; OSX has to temporarily stop some processes and do various other gyrations to check everything.
When you boot from the Install disc and do a +*Repair Disk,+* DU can check things much more easily. So if that says everything's ok, then everything's ok.

  • Disk utility - disk repair permissions

I recently upgraded from OSX Tiger to Snow Leopard and also upgraded Firefox to 20.0, but have kept Safari as the default browser. Ever since, it doesn't take long for everything to slow down especially the 'net. I use disk utility to repair disk permissions (almost daily!)  which helps. This takes about an hour. The problem seems to be in the System Library Core Services; e.g under Remote Management Resources Library it should be "drwxr-xr-x" but is "-rwxr-xr-x"  and so on down the line including System Library Frameworks, Java.....       What caused this and what can I do to get back to proper functioning?

I use disk utility to repair disk permissions (almost daily!)  which helps.
No it doesn't. That's a complete waste of time.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

It will be noted that this is an OS9 image, I've made a small partition just for running Reason/Rebirth.
But I don't think the fact it's OS9 should be an issue.
The current main start-up disk is a OS X clone made by CCC on a Western Digital 250gb HD, but the above problem on the source disk Disk Utility was the reason I used CCC to clone in the first place (if you see what I mean).
I'm trying to avoid putting the old disk back in but I will if I have to : I am assuming that the problem was on the source disk therefore I can deal with it on the OS X clone.
Cheers if anyone can shed some light,
    Steve B

Yes I do have access but I'm afraid I blew the firewire bus on this TiBook last year (noted elsewhere in the discussions) so can't do target mode. Twas a terrible blow to an otherwise mint book...
I have been using it since & the damage seemed to be limited to the lack of firewire & inability to sleep.(the laptop not me!!!)
I'm not yet in the position to buy a new book (or even a £200 logic board which is the only way of restoring the firewire (which I might do yet as I am a Rebirth fanatic & it only runs on OS9)
The only way I can remotely work on this is by removing the disk & putting it in one of my enclosures.
As a matter of interest what action were you going to suggest?
    Cheers,
    Steve

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Help: Disk Utility: Disks need to be repaired

My MacBook Pro lately has been extremely slow and just constantly thinking and freezing.
I ran the Disk Utility to verify the disk and this is what came up:
"This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD.  Restart your computer, holding down the command key and the R key until you see the Apple Logo.  When the OS C Utilities Window appears choose disk utility."
So I did this step and went to repair it.  But when I said repair disk, it said that the disk seems to be Okay.
Why does it say that?  How can I fix my computer, or do I need to go to the Apple Store.  Please Help.
    Thanks

    Looking at your top screenshot:
That appears to be the NETWORK version of Disk Utility.
From this I conclude your Internal Hard Drive was seen as failing, and it would not boot to the Recovery_HD partition on the Internal Hard Drive, and went for the Online/Network version of Recovery_HD (from the Internet) instead.
I think you should take it in for service and expect that they are likely to replace the Hard Drive and give it back to you with a new drive with ONLY Mac OS X (no user files) installed.
    AppleCare warranty and SSD:
Like most warranties, AppleCare covers defects in materials and workmanship. They will replace like-with-like, that is: they will give you the same drive or a slightly better one. I suggest you have it fixed and take advantage of whatever they will give you under warranty.
Apple does not sell the 2.5" form factor SATA SSD notebook drives that would just fit into the same space as your internal drive. These are very popular with upgraders, and users find they are somewhat faster, run cooler, and allow the battery to last longer. You can always replace the spinning internal drive later with one more to your liking, and run the old one in an external enclosure for more on-desk storage.
You do not void your warranty by installing an aftermarket drive such as an SSD, but the actual new drive would not be covered under the Apple warranty. (many Vendors warrant the drive separately for at least a year, sometimes longer).

  • Disk Utility Disk Error

When running disk utility this past weekend I came across the following errors:
    Invalid Volume Free Block Count
(It should be 146352250 instead of 146352248)
The Volume Macintosh HD was found to be corrupt and needs to be repaired.
This hard drive is relatively new … the original 500 Gig drive I had in it crashed in June (1 year and 8 months old) so I went to Tekserve and replaced it with a 750 gig drive - effectively, the drive inside my machine is only 5 months old.
    Any suggestions?

Yes, you can backup, Zero erase the drive and reinstall OS X, update, programs and finally files.
Zeroing maps off failing sectors, making the data on them more reliable. One should try to do this, or the Erase Free Space option, before any major data writes or formats on a drive to decrease the chances of coming across a newly failed sector.
It also checks the drive as it writes across the entire drive, if there is a major issue, then better to learn about it upfront while the warranty and purchase is still fresh so you can get it exchanged, rather than later on when you decide to address the last portion of the drive and find out.
Drives always ship out with a few bad sectors, some fail along the way. The drive likely works just file it's perhaps the directory info on those bad sectors failed and why you got the problem.
I've only had one hard drive fail in 28 years of using Mac's. One drive! It just died one morning and failed to boot.
All the other minor issues were resolved with a Zero erase, so now I do it upon all new hard drives and before a major write occurs.
You should learn how to clone your boot drive as well, it comes in great asistance, you can boot off the external clone, zero and reverse clone in a few hours, nealry effortlessly.

  • Disk Utility Disk 1st Aid SLOW in OS X10.7

I have an external hard drive that use for my Time Machine backups. It took some time but the Time Machine copied my OS X 10.7 Macintoah HD with no issues and all seemed well.  I then opened and used the First Aid opton in the new Disk Utilty version 12 to Repair my Time Machine backup drive. It is still running and the time left is 45 minutes. It seems to be running in slow motion at best.
I wonder if there is an issue with both 10.6 and 10.7 files in the same TM backup?

As a follow-up the Disk Utility finally finished the Verification and Repair and said the TM external drive was okay. I then had the Time Machine do another back up and it worked but took five minutes for clean up after copying the files.  I am not sure but I think the Disk Utilty may have changed something and It too the Time Machine some time to put them back in place.  All seems well but the the 10.7 Disk Utility seems slower than I remember in 10.6.
As long as the TM is happy I am not messing with it!

  • Spotlight's blind spot: Spotlight comments on Disk Utility disk images.

Has anyone but me noticed that Spotlight goes blind to Spotlight Comments once the files are moved into a 256-bit encrypted read/write disck image created with Disk Utility? I don't have iPhoto, and I keep photos in too many categories for that anyway. I keep all my keywords in Spotlight comments in Finder attached to each file and create "albums" on the fly with Spotlight searches.
But as soon as I moved the whole mess into a read/write 256-bit encrypted disk image created with "from folder" in Disk Utility....I can still see all the comments in Finder GetInfo, but Spotlight can't. I even tried adding comments to the search field list and it still sees nothing, not even when the disk image is mounted and visible in my Finder window sidebar.
    What am I missing?

Yes, I search while the drive is mounted.
Yes, I can drag it into and out of Spotlight's Privacy Pref's Pane. While it's in there the entire drive obviously disappears from Spotlight's searches. Once I - it from the exclude list it returns to seeing folder names only, but still finds nothing based on Spotlight Comments.
I'm starting to think Apple left that bit of code out. Anybody know how to put it back in?

  • Disk Utility: Disk Scrubbing ("Erase Free Space")

    Hi,
I've logged in case 113969827 the following observation:
In a Macbook 10.5.6 using Disk Utility to Erase Free Space
(Disk Utility / Erase / Erase Free Space) with 7-Pass or 35-Pass
    Erase on a / partition with 113GB free of 200GB of a 232GB drive
which is Boot Camp partitioned, the other 32GB going to a
flawlessly-running Windows XP, rarely used, the following
    issue happens...
The free space (87gb) goes to 0gb.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks.

    Hey,
Talked with Apple in Texas, Indiana and Silicon Valley on this one
    as well Josh...
The bottom line executed so far is:
    Shutdown Mac OS X
    mount -uw
    /usr/sbin/fsck -fy
    shutdown -r now
    Finder
    Disk Utility
    Erase / Erase Freespace
Select least secure option and run
Wait until Disk Utility is final (no timing messages)
The above completed okay and your advice to "wait it out"
    was right on the ball.
Next, I need to do Erase / Erase Freespace 7-Pass overnight
    and then a 35-Pass tomorrow.
The reason I want to do all this heavy "assurance" of deleting
is that if I am required to send this notebook back for the cpu
fan issue, then I certainly want privacy for my disk. But on second
thought, upon receipt, I could just go to the local Apple store and
swap out the disk from one and place it in the new frame and
    bootup, retaining my data.
Anyway, thanks for your input today as well as Richard in Indiana,
Matt in Texas, Matt in Silicon Valley.
(There were no errors in the fsck btw though it did say the FS was
    modified... odd.)
    Stuart
P.S. One would want to do more than the drag-and-drop to the Trash
with Empty Trash btw. I don't think those are assured from undelete
by savvy wizards or other operatives... whereas, 35-pass certainly is
completely secure, assuming the implementation at Apple doesn't
have a backdoor of some kind...
I'll keep this thread updated after the 7-pass / 35-pass which I am
sure just requires extra patience, as you indicated. Thanks!

when i hit disk verify the color wheel comes up and turns for a very long time.
