Disk Utility Doesn't Seem To Give The Same Info On CDs-DVDs As It Used To?

It's not a serious problem - just a bit of a puzzle.
I only use Disk Utility occasionally but I was sure that when a DVD etc. was inserted, Disk Utility would give a rundown of Maximum size of the DVD (eg. 4.7GB), amount used (eg. 2.8GB) and space remaining.
Yesterday when I opened it , all I could get it to show about the "size" of an empty DVD-RW was:-
Total Capacity : 0 Bytes
Write Ability : Read Only (DVD-RW)
Other CDs and DVDs were similar.
There is no problem in so far as I can burn CDs and DVDs OK in spite of this apparently altered wording.
Am I imagining things or has the info layout changed slightly?
If it has, the only things I can think of to account for it are the fact that some months ago I upgraded to 10.3.9 and last month I installed Toast 7.
Can anyone shed any light ?
Ian.

Instead of using the Erase tab, select the DRIVE (not the volume indent below) and go to the Partition tab.
In the Partition tab, select a Volume Scheme (change it from Current), even if you select +1 Partition+. Click on the Options button below the diagram. Select the appropriate Partition Map Scheme in the dialog box. For exclusive use with an Intel Mac, +GUID Partition Table+ is optimum. Click OK. Name the one or more partitions. The format should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Apply.
Hopefully by repartitioning, the erase procedure will work.

  • Reformatting external HD with Disk Utility doesn't seem to work?

I've got two external hard disks - one Samsung 250GB and one 40GB which were previously formatted for and used with a PC.
I'm trying to erase them and reformat them for Mac, using the 'erase disk' option in Disk Utility, but each time I try, for each disk, it seems stuck at 'creating partition map'. After an hour or so, I give up. I'm reformatting as 'Mac OS Extended (journaled)', which I understand to be the correct option.
Can anyone help - is there something obvious I'm missing?
    Thanks!

  • My disk utility doesn't want to show the disk that I need to re install my Mac OS X on!

When I go to recovery mode and go to re install the Mac OS X software again I press next and agree but when it says choose the disk to install on I don't have anything to choose from any suggestions?

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

  • Premier CC doesn't seem to be the same on two different computers, and won't open my files

I have CC installed on a macbook pro, and just installed it on a new iMac, and both are using Premier CC, not Premier 6, but I can't open my project on the new iMac as it says that the project was created on a newer version and won't work. This iMac is newer than the macbook, so if anything I would think that the new one is newer. The one thing I notice though is that when I open the premier program, it opens with a different opening image than the premier CC on my laptop does. So I assume that means that I'm using a different version, but how would that be since I installed them both from CC the same way. Please help so I can get working on this project again. Thanks!

I'm having this issue also, except backwards. My new MacBook says Premiere CC is updated but it's not updated to the same version as my iMac. The MBP says its on version 8.1.0 and the iMac says 8.2.0. . . . I just installed CC on my new MBP, so this is confusing. You'd think it would be the latest version. . . Any help?

  • Locking proxy settings in Firefox 6? doesn't seem to work the same as 5?

Trying to lock down the proxy settings so users can't disable the proxy. Did this in 5 by editing the firefox.js file in omni.jar then creating a mozzila.cfg file, but same technique doesn't appear to work in 6.
    Any ideas what's different?

This does not seem to apply to Firefox 6. I cant locate a place to configure all user settings like there was in the previous versions of Firefox. My Scenario is-
Terminal Server on 2008 R2 and trying to configure all user settings that will apply to all users launching Firefox from the TS.
All documentation and references I have found after an exhaustive search all reference FF 4 and before. Any thoughts?

  • I recently installed the new operating system.  iMovie doesn't seem to work the same as in Mountain Lion.  I can't figure out how to burn a movie to a DVD.  Has that feature been eliminated?

I am having difficulty figuring out how to burn my iMovie to a DVD.  Has that feature been eliminated?

unbelievable... the amount of RAM is the issue... I found a post (http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=8448) on an unrelated matter, but the user solved their issue under X64 by limiting the amount of RAM WinXP x64 was using by editing the boot.ini file.
The basis of the "trick" is to add " /maxmem=4096" to the end of your OS line, but I elected to copy the line and add it to a new entry so I could easily select which "mode" i wanted at boot.... like so...
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition()\WINDOWS="Window s XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition()\WINDOWS="Window s XP Professional x64 Edition - X-Fi tweak" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /maxmem=4096
amazingly this solved my issue... but now my system properties only report 2Gb instead of 4Gb... unacceptable!
When Can I expect a fix for this Creative?

  • Disk Utility doesn't recognise inserted DVD-R DL

I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger a few week ago and Disk Utility has been working fine for a while. I bought a few blank DVD-R DL disks with 8.5Gig storage capacities, but, when inserted, Disk Utility doesn't show them in the top of the pane on the left side.
It shows the Super Drive, but doesn't show an inserted DVD below it like it usually should.
    Any suggestions?

Alright, so instead of burning to the disk specifically, I burned to the superdrive which automatically burned to the disk. It worked alright and now that the DVD has something on it, its icon pops up in Disk Utility. I don't know why it chenged...

  • Disk Utility in Recovery HD does not see same problems as Normal Mode

[Please note my computer specs are below]
I recently upgraded to Yosemite and installed Avid Media Composer 8.2. Right after the installed the software I ran Disk Utility's Verify Disk and received the following messages after 60 seconds or so:
Incorrect number of file hard links
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Invalid volume free block count
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I restarted using Recovery HD and ran Verify Disk again. It finished scanning in about one second and said everything was okay.
After restarting I ran Disk Utility a third time and received the same error messages as above.
I've just finished calling Apple support and they couldn't help me. The gentleman said it must be an anomaly because I'm using a flash disk. After several minutes it was clear he wasn't going to help me - so here I am. Computer specs below.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Intel Iris 1536 MB

    Do this:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally.
    3. Reinstall Yosemite without erasing the drive:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Lion Disk Utility doesn't finish erase

Since installing Lion (clean install) disk utility doesn’t finish erasing or partitioning external disks. I used the disk utility from the install drive to erase the internal drive before installing Lion, this worked fine, but ever since it failed to erase any of my external drives. It starts of as normal but the progress bar stops half way and just never finish. Disk Utility does respond.
I tried different format options, repair and verify but none of the processes finish.
I went back to the install drive that I used to erase the internal drive before Lion install and it also didn’t want to finish.
I copied the old disk utility from Snow Leopard to my desktop, it opens with a warning, but gives the same outcome.
    Any advice?

I'm having the same problem on my late 2010 Air with Lion installed over Snow Leopard.
I've tried several usb memory drives and several external harddrives...all the same problem with the progress bar getting stuck halfway. wether I select 'partition' or 'erase'.
the 'genius' at the mac store told me that he advises a clean install of Lion. I did...or I thought I did but all my files were still in place and the problem was still there. Guess I will have to wipe the drive first.
Also, unable to repair permissions on the MAC drive.
But it is remarkable how few people seem to experience this problem thus far. A google search hardly returns any results.

  • Macbook Pro: Disk Utility doesn't see my HD

    Hi guys,
My Macbook Pro has been running slower lately, but I honestly didn't think too much about it...until today. It's just over a year old, running Mac OS X, and I mostly use Safari as my browser, but I have to use Firefox for my online classes. Today, Firefox froze up and quit responding, so I Force Quit it. A few minutes after this, Safari did the same thing, and then it was my entire desktop. Nothing was responding; I had to shut down by pushing the power button.
And then, it wouldn't turn back on. The chime sounded, the apple appeared, and the spinning circle underneath it. And it spun, and spun...until a generic "stop" symbol replaced the apple logo. I immediately shut it back down and did an online search. I followed every fix recommended for this issue. I tried reseting the PRAM, and then the SMC, and still the same thing happened. I tried to boot in Safe Mode, and if seemed to be working...right up until an hour passed and nothing new was happening. I shut it down again, and tried booting from the install disc of Snow Leopard. That worked, and I tried to do Disk Utility with the intention of following the online apple directive of running first aid on my HD. Except Disk Utility doesn't see my HD, only the boot disc and DVD drive. I'm guessing this is a bad sign. I tried calling Apple Care, but they are closed right now. I will call them in the morning, but in the meantime, I thought I'd see if anyone here had any advice I haven't already tried. Sadly, I haven't run Time Machine in...months. I'll end up losing a lot of stuff because I just didn't do that if my HD is toast.
    Any suggestions?

Sure seems to be a failed(ing) hard drive. If you happen to get it into safe mode again, the ONLY thing you should immediately do is copy off your Home folder to an external USB disk, SD card, something. Then just get it to an Apple store for check.
Try to copy your files off first and don't try anything else to get at that disk until you copy your home folder. If the disk is failing and you're trying to do things to it you'll loose the chance to get that data.

  • Disk Utility doesn't refresh when inserting new DVDs

I'm in the process of copying a few DVDs by making an image of them first and then burning the image onto a blank DVD through Disk Utility.
After I'm done with one and insert a new DVD to copy, Disk Utility doesn't refresh to show me the new disk is in the drive. Is it normal?
If it is, is there something I can press so that Disk Utility manually refresh its listing of drives?
I find that quitting and restarting Disk Utility just to make a new image is so inefficient.

I am suddenly having the same problem. When I insert a blank disc either cd or dvd it does not show up in the left column in disc utility. I have tried closing and then relaunching disc utility but nothing. The disc shows up on my desk top but not in disc utility. I fear this is a Snow Leopard problem. Toast has no problem recognizing the disc and burning to it.

  • "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."  Trying to format my iomega external HD for use with Mac

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility, the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:
*** malloc[419]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x290a410; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug : for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)
    Workaround
    Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
    iTunes.pkg
    iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
    Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

i'm just scared i will do something wrong on my own and lose my data.
You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

  • IPod Shuffle not recognized, device not recognized, disk utility doesn't...

    ...disk utility doesn't show up.
It's all on my wife's computer as it's her iPod. Up until yesterday - and she didn't change ANYTHING - iTunes 7.01 had no problem wiht the iPod. Today, however, iTunes nor her Mac recognizes the iPod. Can't do a thing with it. It displays a nice green light, but that's it. All connections checked and re-checked. Looked at the disk utility and there's no image for her iPod.
I plugged it into my own Mac and iTunes 7.02 tries to upload/access her library from her iPod and 1) after an interminable wait, say four to five minutes, it recognizes that there's a shared library available, and 2) then it says there's some firewall that won't let iTunes access the liberary.
I don't have an iPod of my own, so my experience is really limited. She uses her iPod all the time and, again, hasn't done anything different than she did last night.
What is to be done? Thanks in advance for GOOD tips.

Turns out she's running iTunes 7.1...
    Still nothing.
    Anyone out there, please?
