Disk utility doesn't show external Time Capsule harddisk

Hi.
With an older OS X, it was possible to use disk-utility for making some changes at my TimeCapsule(3rd.Gen.)-harddisk.
Now i tried this with the latest version of Yosemite. I think, at the 1st view to to disk utility window, there was an TC-ikon shown under the SuperDrive-ikon. But some seconds later it was gone! I tried it again after restart my iMac an the TC, but every time finder-window and disk-utility-window looks like this ..
... with added comments in green ("Finder"-window, "disk utility"-window) and red (lost "TC-Harddisk?"-ikon).
I tried this also with a MacBook-air (newest version) - same result
What happened? Is it a Yosemite-Problem?
Can I do something with the terminal-app to get the connection?
<<<---- I posted this Nov.2014 at Mac OS & System Software / OS X Yosemite
Today I connected an USB-Stick with my TimeCapsule. Then I opened Disk Utility and was happy - for some minutes.
At the window of the Disk Utility I saw the TC-Harddisc an the memory-stick too.
But when I tried to add an partition to the TC-Harddisc, it was gone away.
I closed-and-started the disk Utility again - now TC-Harddisc was shown.
I disconnected-and-connected the memory-stick again - now TC-Harddisc was shown at the disc-utility-window.
Thanks for Help!

You cannot partition a TC disk from disk utility in the Mac.. that has always been the case.
What you did last time is partition the sparsebundle.. that is a virtual disk created by the computer.. merely partitioning a virtual disk is pointless.
You simply need to create another sparsebundle or dmg file to use as virtual disk.
But the fact that Yosemite continually loses connection to the TC .. oh yeah that is because Yosemite is buggy.
Reset your TC to factory.
Do this manually..
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Then redo the setup in the airport utility. Use short names with no spaces and pure alphanumeric characters.
Same with passwords only longer.
I recommend you then mount the TC in finder manually by its IP address if at all possible not by name.
The problem here is the IP must be static which it is by default if the TC is the main router but it will have to be specially setup if the TC is bridged.
Use Go, Connect to Server.
SMB://10.0.1.1
When asked for the disk password type that in and do not forget to save it in the keychain.
Then you can mount a TM sparsebundle in disk utility if you want.. although I suggest that is pointless other than to verify your backup.
Do not partition it.. that is not helpful at all.

No they haven't worked on this computer before. I using them on my old MacBook Pro (a computer which is no longer working)  which ran Snow Leopard.
The 500GB drive  "stopped working" with that old MBP too
But the 320GB drive was always working with old MBP if I remember correctly.

  • Airport Disk Utility Doesn't See External Drive, But Airport Utility Does?

Hey! I am a recent Apple convert and just got a brand new MacBook and Airport Extreme. I am trying to get my Maxtor OneTouch 320GB HDD to work with the Extreme, but to no avail. The Airport Utility sees my HDD, but the Airport Disk Utility doesn't? Any hints/tips on how to fix this problem? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

All I can think of is that the drive is formatted in NTFS which I have heard cannot be read by the AEBS(Airport Extreme Base Station), but I am confirming this right now in a different message. If you can copy the files, format your drive in HFS+(the Mac's standard file system), then reload the files. See if it works and reply back.

  • Disk Utility doesn't show new drive when trying to install Snow Leopard

Please help because I've searched everywhere. My MacBook's hard drive failed. It's done for. I bought another internal, Western Digital 320gb WD3200BEVT. So it's brand new and when I boot from the Snow Leopard install I don't see the new hard drive in the Disk Utility App. All I see is my CD-Drive. No where is my new drive so that I can at least format it. People suggested on other forums that maybe it's the cables but i don't think it is cause the hard drive you just slide in and out. There are no jumpers on this drive either, so that's out. I've narrowed it down to two things, bad hard drive or this drive just isn't recognized by by Snow Leopard?

If you have tried restarting a few times and it still doesn't show up I'm afraid you are gonna have to go back in and check the connections. I know they just slot into the carriage, but possibly it is not in tight. I can only suggest you open it up and check everything thoroughly. If after a thorough check, if it still does not mount you may want to take the hard drive back and swap it. Are you sure it was only a hard drive failure in the first place? I only ask this because WD hard drives have quite a solid reputation.

  • Disk utility doesn't show xServe RAID Array

I have a new (to me) xServe RAID box and I'm stuck, the stays lights are green the fiber link light is green on the RAID and not lit on the PCI card but shows up as green in the fiber link section of the settings tool but the RAID array doesn't show up in Disk Utility so I can't format the drives.
I set up the disks as Enhanced JBOD using RAIDadmin and I've deleted and created it a couple of times, I'm just not sure what else I should try, I've read the manual but. Can't find any suggestions of what's going wrong.
    Thanks

  • Airport Utility doesn't find my Time Capsule.

I bought a 2TB Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive and as my time capsule.  (Originally I was going to buy an airport and plug in a hard drive but the guys at the store said that TC would accomplish the same thing.)  I have never been able to get my MBP to connect to the TC.  The airport utility says "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  But I never even got a chance to configure the base station with the MBP.
What I've tried to do so far:
I have my TC hooked up to a FiOS router (WAN port) and then the TC hooked up via an Ethernet cord to my MBP.  Still no luck.  I've upgraded to Mountain Lion to make sure everything is up-to-date and still no luck.  Then I bought a USB cord and plugged that into the TC and Mac and reset the TC.  It found that but set up a new network on an Ethernet.  (Which then knocked me off line.)  I am not looking for a new network connection, just want to back up my files and store my media files on the TC.  (I have reset the TC every time I tried a new "fix".)
I would be very thankful for any advice because I am beyond frustrated.
    Thanks.

    Try this:
Unplug all ethernet and USB cords and reset your TC.  Connect to your TC using WiFi from your computer, then run Airport Utility (alternative would be to connect an ethernet cable to your TC just for this setup).  Select your TC in Airport Utility, then click on Network.  Select Router Mode as Off (Bridge Mode).  Then go to the Wireless tab and select Network Mode as off (note if you are connected via WiFi once you update the settings you will be kicked off since the TC WiFi will have been turned off).
After doing this you should then be able plug an ethernet cable into the WAN port of the TC into the ethernet port of the FiOS and then use the Wireless connection on the FiOS to access the Time Capsule hard drive.  Honestly you should be able to do all this with the TC already connected to the FiOS but since it apparently isn't working this should work.  Please post back if it doesn't.

  • My Airport Utility doesn't recognize my Time Capsule,

Sometime ago I got a new FIOS cable modelm with built-in WiFi..  I turned off the WiFi portion of my Time Capsule and used that instead.  Now my Airport Utility no  longer recognized my ime Capsule.

    Did you upgrade to 6.3?
It is definitely having issues finding the Apple routers.. turn on ipv6 local-link in the computer.. but that may fail without wireless turned on in the TC if the FIOS router doesn't give you ipv6.. which is still a work in progress on most modems and routers.
Turn the wireless back on, on the TC.. you may need to connect to it directly with ethernet.. and do a factory reset.. none of which will harm your backups.
Setup the TC afresh with all smb type names, short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Give the wireless name the same as the SSID in the FIOS router.
But manually set wireless channel to say 11.. for 2.4ghz.. 5ghz won't matter as the FIOS doesn't use it.
Set wireless in the FIOS to 1 or 6.. or leave it on auto, should be ok as long as one of the routers is fixed.
Use wpa2 AES in the FIOS.. use WPA2 Personal in the TC.
    Use same password in both.
If possible use a few meters (= several feet ) ethernet cable so you have them a apart a bit.. it is not a big deal but I like to run radios communication spaced a bit. Old Engineering traits.
If you use a different wireless name for 5ghz.. it is much faster when client machine is near the TC.. and you will have direct access to the TC rather than via the FIOS.. makes for better backups and keeps network on 2.4ghz less busy for internet connectivity.

  • Disk Utility on Vista - Trouble Mounting Time Capsule

I am using Time Capsule as a wireless router. The disk connection with Time Capsule (drive Z) "disappeared" off my wireless Vista computer. I had to rename the Time Capsule but the Disk Utility continues to use the old name. I uninstalled Airport Utility and reinstalled, but Disk Utility continues to use the old name and I can't get rid of it or make the utility see the new name. HELP!

Still getting wi-fi disconnect if I transfer files to time capsule on Vista. This evening I even got BSOD when I started trying to copy some files across. They were pretty large files (linux images). Any ideas? Please?!

  • AirPort Utility doesn't recognize my Time Capsule

I am trying to set up a Time Capsule but AirPort utility is saying there are no wireless devices, even though its all plugged in and connected.  Suggestions?

The Time Capsule is broadcasting a temporary wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
Have you joined this network from your Mac (there is no password required)?
Once you join this network, then open AirPort Utility and it should be able to connect to the Time Capsule so that you can configure it using wireless. You may be asked to "switch" networks, so click OK if you see that message.
You also have the option to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports to establish a connection that way. Make the connection first, then open AirPort Utility. Once the Time Capsule is configured with new settings and updated, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable.

  • IPod Shuffle not recognized, device not recognized, disk utility doesn't...

    ...disk utility doesn't show up.
It's all on my wife's computer as it's her iPod. Up until yesterday - and she didn't change ANYTHING - iTunes 7.01 had no problem wiht the iPod. Today, however, iTunes nor her Mac recognizes the iPod. Can't do a thing with it. It displays a nice green light, but that's it. All connections checked and re-checked. Looked at the disk utility and there's no image for her iPod.
I plugged it into my own Mac and iTunes 7.02 tries to upload/access her library from her iPod and 1) after an interminable wait, say four to five minutes, it recognizes that there's a shared library available, and 2) then it says there's some firewall that won't let iTunes access the liberary.
I don't have an iPod of my own, so my experience is really limited. She uses her iPod all the time and, again, hasn't done anything different than she did last night.
What is to be done? Thanks in advance for GOOD tips.

Turns out she's running iTunes 7.1...
    Still nothing.
    Anyone out there, please?

  • Disk Utility doesn't recognise inserted DVD-R DL

I upgraded to Leopard from Tiger a few week ago and Disk Utility has been working fine for a while. I bought a few blank DVD-R DL disks with 8.5Gig storage capacities, but, when inserted, Disk Utility doesn't show them in the top of the pane on the left side.
It shows the Super Drive, but doesn't show an inserted DVD below it like it usually should.
    Any suggestions?

Alright, so instead of burning to the disk specifically, I burned to the superdrive which automatically burned to the disk. It worked alright and now that the DVD has something on it, its icon pops up in Disk Utility. I don't know why it chenged...

  • Disk Utility doesn't see Time capsuleDisk

I'm trying to migrate a backup did with Time Machine to a brand new Airport Time Capsule Disk.
This is for don't loess the previous backups having ones new.
I got some information and it looks I should connect both  disks (old HD and new Time capsule) to my Mac , then restore the new one using as source the old backups.
The matter is that DISK UTILITY APP doesn't see the Time Capsule disk .
Who may help me in doing this operation?
    Many thanks
    ivano

Niel, many thanks for your reply. I've gone trough the instructions you've indicated but I've not found my case.
Let me try to explain my situation
Till now I did the backups in an external Western Digital HD (MyBookLive) using Time Machine.
The disk was gonna be full so I bought a Time Capsule bigger than the WD I had.
My intention was to continue to do backups using TimeMachine on the new TimeCapsule KEEPING ONLINE the old backups.
I read that I should use DISK UTILITY APP and restore the old spares bundle file into a new one locate into the Time Capsule.
My problem is that using DISK UTILITY I cannot see both the WD Disk neither the Time Capsule  .
Many thanks in advance for your support

  • Macbook Pro: Disk Utility doesn't see my HD

    Hi guys,
My Macbook Pro has been running slower lately, but I honestly didn't think too much about it...until today. It's just over a year old, running Mac OS X, and I mostly use Safari as my browser, but I have to use Firefox for my online classes. Today, Firefox froze up and quit responding, so I Force Quit it. A few minutes after this, Safari did the same thing, and then it was my entire desktop. Nothing was responding; I had to shut down by pushing the power button.
And then, it wouldn't turn back on. The chime sounded, the apple appeared, and the spinning circle underneath it. And it spun, and spun...until a generic "stop" symbol replaced the apple logo. I immediately shut it back down and did an online search. I followed every fix recommended for this issue. I tried reseting the PRAM, and then the SMC, and still the same thing happened. I tried to boot in Safe Mode, and if seemed to be working...right up until an hour passed and nothing new was happening. I shut it down again, and tried booting from the install disc of Snow Leopard. That worked, and I tried to do Disk Utility with the intention of following the online apple directive of running first aid on my HD. Except Disk Utility doesn't see my HD, only the boot disc and DVD drive. I'm guessing this is a bad sign. I tried calling Apple Care, but they are closed right now. I will call them in the morning, but in the meantime, I thought I'd see if anyone here had any advice I haven't already tried. Sadly, I haven't run Time Machine in...months. I'll end up losing a lot of stuff because I just didn't do that if my HD is toast.
    Any suggestions?

Sure seems to be a failed(ing) hard drive. If you happen to get it into safe mode again, the ONLY thing you should immediately do is copy off your Home folder to an external USB disk, SD card, something. Then just get it to an Apple store for check.
Try to copy your files off first and don't try anything else to get at that disk until you copy your home folder. If the disk is failing and you're trying to do things to it you'll loose the chance to get that data.

  • DIsk Utility doesn't allow creating a partition

    Hi all,
I just bought a new MacBookPro and installed Mountain Lion yesterday. I decided to use a encrypted file system (File Vault). So far everything worked fine.
This morning I decided to do a clean install, as Migration Assistent carried over some data I do not need.
So I booted into Recovery Mode, selected the harddisk and chose "Erase". As I wanted an encrypted volume again, Disk utility asked me for a password which I specified. Immediately after clicking ok, Disk Utility said "Not enough RAM to complete this request". After clicking OK, my partition went and since then I am strugglign to find out how to activate it (data not important, as everythign backed up).
Apple Care also doesn't knwo what to recommend anymore.
    Here's what I tried:
    1) Command+R boot and Disk Utility
    2) Boot from external HD and Disk Utility
    3) Internet Recovery (ends with error)
    4) Delete PR
The strange thing is that Disk Utility shows Macintosh HD on the top level with the option to partition (it doesn't show any indended partitions) but all options are grayed out. It's like Disk Utility somehow confused Parttion with physical drive and now gets confused.
Any other idea other than sending the macbookPro back to Apple?
    Thanks
    Matt

You should of taken the encryption off before you started that proccess. That is one thing they don't tell you. Never try to modify an encrypted partition.
You may have to boot to the Internet (Online) Recovery HD system lto Re-Partition the drive as one partition.
Hold down Command+Option+r keys at boot and keep them held down until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen, then you can let them up. Have the computer WIRED to your unternet router.
Once that loads open disk utility and select the Drive Name (Not volume name, IE Macintosh HD) and then the partition tab and select One partition from the Partition Layout drop down.
If that doesn't work then the drive is FUBAR.
