Disk Utility Error 61 when attempting to create disk image on external driv
I would like to make occasional archive backups of my three macintosh computers. I bought a new Western Digital 2TB drive for this purpose, and formatted it as Mac OS Extended. Trying to do a disk image backup using Disk Utility, I follow the directions:
- Startup from an install DVD.
- Start Disk Utilities and select "Restore"
- Drag "Macintosh HD" into the Source box
- Click on "New Image" and select compressed and 128-bit AES encryption
This leads to the error message: Unable to create "....." (error -61)
I have enocountered this problem both with my iMac G5 and a MacBook, both running Leopard.
Does anyone know what this error means, what I am doing wrong, and/or if there is another way to create disk image backups? Help!
1. For reasons I don't know disc images seem to become more fragile the larger they get. They also can be subject to file corruption that affects the entire disc image, whereas file corruption on a clone would only affect certain files.
2. You cannot put multiple clones on the same volume. Each clone must be on a separate volume, but you can have multiple volumes on a single drive simply by partitioning the drive accordingly. Of course you need a drive large enough to accommodate each clone. Each clone should be to a space equal to the capacity of the cloned drive.
3. I'm not a big fan of TM, although I must confess it has become more reliable since it's release, especially with Snow Leopard. However, there are many backup utilities that can create clones, perform incremental updates, and archive changed files. See the following:

Disk space error when trying to access iPhoto library on external drive
My iPhoto photos are stored on an external drive, which I've be accessing regularly on my old Macbook. I upgraded to a newer (but used) Macbook that has Yosemite installed and, therefore, Photos. When I try to access my iPhoto library on the external drive, I get an error that there is not enough disk space. There is a lot of disk space on the new Mac. The eternal drive is getting full, but I deleted a lot of large files and there should be enough space on there now.
Any ideas?
I'm stumped! What format is that external drive?

Error 49168 when attempting to create Disk Image
After attempting to create a disk image of a specific CD, I have been unable to create a disk image from any folder or volume. Every time I try, I get (toward the end of the dmg creation prcess) "Unable to create (...) - error 49168."
Creating a blank disc image still works fine.
Judging from my attempts to find answers, this seems to be a rare problem.I just got the same error and have been looking around Google and elsewhere online. It seems to be rare but I haven't yet found a very good fix, the only thing I've found is this: http://tinyurl.com/d52l4 I'm currently trying that and I'll report back to let you know if it works
All I did from the link was copy the contents of the folder I was trying to burn into a new folder and everything worked just fine. I suppose it had something to do with the permissions of the previous folder. Anyway, hope that helps.

Disk Utility error when verifying DIY fusion drive
Hi,
It has been a while since I had to post a problem, but I need others advice on this if you can help. When 10.8.3 came out I installed an M4 512gb ssd in my main drive bay of 2008 unibody aluminium macbook and put a 1tb spinner in the optibay. Created a fusion drive, migrated data and all has been great. Decided to run disk utility today to check for any errors as I had a sleep issue with the 10.8.4 update which I ended up solving by changing the sleep settings in terminal - the issue had caused a few forced shutdowns. I have Disk Utitliy Version 13 (450). The Fusion drive is shown as the logical volume group followed by the volume disk. When I run a verify disk on the volume itself it is all ok:

Error: Incorrect size for logical volume.
I got the same when I did a safe boot and when rebooted from the recovery partition.y question is, do I repair or could it damage my setup? eg is Disk Utility being accurate and it can repair the error, or is it a phantom issue that should be ignored bearing in mind it's a DIY fusion drive and it could end up getting mashed?
Thanks!Hi,
The computer's running fine since I sorted the sleep issue. No issues as far as I can tell, which is why I was surprised to see the error. What does the error actually mean - is it saying that the volume is a different size than the computer thinks it should be and therefore it'll just change a few values? In which case I suppose a repair is harmless? I just don't want to repair and then reboot to find the volume corrupted. -
Disk utility error when erasing an external hard drive
Hi,
Not sure if this is the most appropriate fourm list to post this but I thought I'd give it a try.
I am running snow leopard on my MBP and am trying to use disk utility to erase and format an ext. HD. While the disk icon does not show up on the desktop when I connect it to my mac, Disk utility does show the ext. hd in the left column, but no matter what format I try, even just using one partition and selecting zero out all data, I get the following error: "disk erase failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory".
Is the hd dead? Are there other options? I do have disk warrior, version 4.1.1 and it does not regonize the ext. hd.
Please advise.
Thanks,Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did select the ext hd as the one I wanted to erase (my internal hd is my start up drive). After I selected the ext hd, (there is no volume listed under it so the only thing I can select is the hd itself). that is when I selected erase and then Mac journaled, then named the hd and then after selecting erase, I got the error. Also as a matter of note, if I select firstaid, both the repair and verify permissions are dimmed, so I can't even try to repair the disk. That is when I tried disk warrior hoping that could examine the hd, but since it is not mounted on the d/t, it doesn't show as a drive to check. I don't understand why the ext hd shows up in disk utility, but not the d/t. Also of note is the fact that when I connect that ext had to my Mac with a fw cable, a window opens saying that the drive is not readable and do I want to initialize it or ignore. I choose to initialize and that is when I get the error. Also of note is that I have tried both security options of "don't erase data" and "zero out data" and still get the same error.
Hope this clarifies things a bit. -
LNK1106: invalid file or disk full error when attempting to link nidaqmx.lib
I am attempting to build the ContGen-ExtClk.c example file from the DAQmx ANSI C examples. I am using Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 (yes I know this is an old version). The file compiles with no errors; however, when I attempt to build an executable I get the following linker error:
--------------------Configuration: TestDaq2 - Win32 Debug--------------------
Linking...
C:\MSDEV\LIB\nidaqmx.lib : fatal error LNK1106: invalid file or disk full: cannot seek to 0x42d0f528
Error executing link.exe.
TestDaq2.exe - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s)
Am I using the correct version of the library file? I copied it from the C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-DAQ\DAQmx ANSI C Dev\lib\msvc folder.
Thanks,
Steve ReilingHi Steve,
There is another discussion forum that talks about using older versions of Visual C++. Please take a look at it and let me know if you have further questions.

Disk Utility error when restoring a drive to another drive: Error 6
"Device not configured."
I have a 24" iMac with a 250gig hard drive, and a firewire enclosure with a 160 gig hard drive. The iMac has a windows partition that I am trying to back up on the firewire drive, so that I can repartition and make the windows section bigger, but I keep getting errors when trying to restore.
If I uncheck erase destination, and then click restore, it starts to copy for a few minutes, but after 2-3 gigs of copying I get another error:
"Restore Failure An error (2) occurred while copying. No such file or directory"
This happens again and again and again and again. Any ideas? Thanks for the different responses. Just a few more details. My internal hd is only using 63 of 100g.
So I don't think the disk space issue for disk utility would be the answer to my particular problem. I have also tried using superduper to back up this same drive; however, it would not complete the task either. Would it be better to just back up the user folders separately and maybe the applications folder and then just use the mac os dvd's to install on my new drive? ( I don't guess backing up the applications folder would do any good; they would have to all be reinstalled. ) Just trying to find a way to get this done without having to do to much reinstall work. Any other ideas? -
Error when attempting to create JDBC connection
I'm attempting to create a new JDBC Data Source for a newly installed Weblogic 10.3 installation. I can set up the connection correctly (when I click the Test Configuration button I see "Connection test succeeded"), but when I go to the next step and checkmark the server (exampleServer) to install it to, I get the error and stacktrace provided below.
If I ignore the error and go back to the data sources, I can see it's been added but missing a server. When I try to add the server (exampleServer), it now adds successfully. BUT, if I try to Activate Changes, I get the error:
An error occurred during activation of changes, please see the log for details.
Error Could not perform unpadding: invalid pad byte.
This is a fresh installation running on Vista. Any idea what might be going on??
Thanks,
John

It can be resolved by deleting the existing entries of the datasource in the config.xml and create them manually. Later bring up the server.

Getting -61 error when trying to create an image
I am trying to create a new image .. and my hard drive is not listed on the left hand panel .. the other night it worked fine except it would keep locking up so i did a disc repair and then restarted when i did a restart to prepare for a fresh install i noticed my hard drive was no longer in the disc utlitity not sure why that is.. Now the Snow leopard disc is stuck in the drive and I am unable to eject the disc tried almost every ejection command there is nothing .. isnt there a way to mount the hard drive through the terminal?
This is from a reply to your other thread:

Hmmm... I have a hunch: attempting to read through the imprecise Mac terminology of your previous posts, my intuition tells me that when you were referencing "installing on a new image" and "creating an image" that then "defaulted to 17 MB", you were misusing the term "image" to mean "partition".
If that's the case and you went and tried to create a partition on your hard drive , then you obviously destroyed all your data and even the drive's formatting.
That would most certainly explain a non-working hard drive. -
Creating an image on external drive
Greetings,
Although I have in the past successfully created an image of my entire internal drive (250 GB) onto an external Lacie FW (250 GB) when I now attempt to repeat the process, having re-formatted my Lacie, I get the message that "there is not enough space on the device" (Lacie)
Lacie support says I should "lower the size of the image I'm trying to create using my backup software" I'm using Disk Utility and as far as I know I can't limit the size of a disk image other than compressing and I need to keep the image read/write. Maybe I can do this with other back-up software? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers and thank you all for the very useful ideas in these discussion forums.

To help answer your question we need more info;
What did you format your External HD to, as certian format's limit copy file size?
What is the available space in external HD?
What is the used space in the internal HD?

Error when attempting to create connection -- Discoverer
Hi.
Application server 10g 10.1.2.0.2
Discoverer (business intelligence)
HP-UX
10g Database
We have a new installation of the application server with Discoverer. If we try to create a connection from the Discoverer connection page for plus or viewer, we get the following error:
Error
A connection error has occurred.
- oracle.discoiv.controller.DiscovererControllerException: Attempted to exceed 2 oracle.discoiv.state.LoginTransitions History: oracle.discoiv.state.LogoutTransition oracle.discoiv.state.LoginTransition oracle.discoiv.state.LogoutTransition oracle.discoiv.state.LoginTransition
- Attempted to exceed 2 oracle.discoiv.state.LoginTransitions History: oracle.discoiv.state.LogoutTransition oracle.discoiv.state.LoginTransition oracle.discoiv.state.LogoutTransition oracle.discoiv.state.LoginTransition
We even created a user with no special characters/numbers. Simply text. It has not worked for any user. I can create a public connection without any issue. I do indeed have the checkbox selected for creating private connections.
Anyone else? Have you seen this? Resolved this (even better!)?
Thanks!
RobinHi everyone
There is a known issue when using AIX, HP-ux or Linux against a 10.1.x database. If this is your scenario, then you need to obtain and read the appropriate release notes. For your information, the necessary instructions are attached here:
When using Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.x) for the Metadata Repository or after upgrading the Metadata Repository to Oracle Database 10g Release 1, you might see the following error on the OracleBI Discoverer Plus Connection pages, the OracleBI Discoverer Viewer Connection pages, and the Public Connection definition page in Application Server Control:
The connection list is currently unavailable.
ORA-06510: PL/SQL: unhandled user-defined exception
ORA-06512: at "ORASSO.WWSSO_API_PRIVATE," line 258
ORA-06510: PL/SQL: unhandled user-defined exception
ORA-06512: at "ORASSO.WWSSO_UTL" line 728
ORA-28231: no data passed to obfuscation toolkit
ORA-06512: at line 1 Unable to retrieve connection list
To resolve this issue, make the following changes in the Metadata Repository database:
1. Edit the init%ORACLE_SID%.ora file in the following location:
DB_install_home/dbs
2. Add the following line to this file:
event="10946 trace name context forever, level 36"
3. If an spfile%ORACLE_SID%.ora exists in either the dbs folder or the database folder, rename the file to spfile%ORACLE_SID%.bak. Changes to init%ORACLE_SID%.ora are not loaded if the database server finds an spfile.
4. Log in as a sysadmin.
5. At the SQL prompt, shut down then start up the database server.
6. Restart the OracleBI Discoverer server using the command opmnctl restartall.
You can get the full AIX document by clicking here: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/html/B25207_03/toc.htm
The Linux document by clicking here: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/html/B25824_01/toc.htm
and the HP-ux document here: http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/html/B25199_03/toc.htm
and then searching for 06512.
Neither Windows nor Unix appear to be plagued this way, at least not so far. :-)
I hope this helps
Best wishes

ORA-20000 Error When Attempting to Create a Tree
Hi,
I'm trying to create a tree region as follows.
1) in SQL*Plus as APP: grant select on APP.MY_TABLE to APX
2) in APEX against APX workspace with APX parsing schema: create a new Tree region
3) when I get to the "Table/View Owner" step I select APP from the "Table / View Owner" list
4) hitting Next produces this error
ORA-20000: User APX has no privileges on the APP schema.
I checked the documentation but found no prerequisites listed in the "Creating Trees" section. What privileges does APX need to create a tree against an APP table? I expect SELECT privileges would be sufficient but that doesn't appear to be the case.
