Disk Utility Error "Unable to write to the last block of the device"

I have a WD Caviar Black 1TB drive in an OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Quad Interface enclosure.  I have been using it as a Time Machine back up volume without any trouble.  I recently upgraded to Lion and within a week I had a back up fail.  I tried repairing the disk, and then tried erasing it, but that failed as well with the error saying that it was "Unable to write to the last block of the device".  This would seem to be the drive failing, but there are many reports in the Apple forums of back up drives giving this error after a Lion upgrade and I am thinking it's some kind of issue with drive needing some kind of firmware update or special formatting.  I thought you guys might be familiar with the issue and have a fix.  Right now the disk is dead in the water and can't be reformatted.

I have exactly the same set up I described above in two different locations (one at home, and one at work).  I swap the Time Machine BUP drive when I get to each location and therefore leave my most recent back up at home or work when I leave each place.  That worked fine for a couple of years.  Then after the Lion upgrade, I started having issues with the two drives.  In both cases, I had to lose all my BUP history in Time Machine and start over with a fresh back up.  The set up at home, let me do it by reformatting the drive and then doing a new back up (I was frustrated I lost all the incremental back ups, the whole point to "Time" Machine, but I was able to get a new BUP established and start over).  At work, however, I had the issue described in my original post where I couldn't reofrmat the drive.  I was at a standstill and that's why I posted my issue.  A couple of weeks later, I got to work, plugged in the drive and it let me reformat it like nothing there was never a problem.  I made a fresh Time Machine BUP and everything was back to normal (albeit with a new BUP).  I can't tell you what changed ... It's possible there was a software update that snuck in and updated drivers or something without me being aware of it, but I haven't got a clue.  All I know is it's resolved and I am back to backing up as before ... Most importantly is to note it was not the drive that failed.  So, there's the update for you, I wish you luck with your drive.

  • Trying to install/format an INTERNAL hard drive using Disk Utility gives me "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device".   Is that a hardware problem and what could be done about it?

    *** PLEASE NOTE*** - This is a query about an INTERNAL HDD not an external one. Thanks.
    My Mac is a late 2009 model and the current hard drive recently failed. So I bought a new one, exactly the same, albeit 750gb instead of 500gb. The HDD is a Seagate Momentus 7200. Before the my current drive failed I made a time machine back up to an external USB HDD. I've inserted the HDD into the bottom of my Mac, plugged in the USB and started my machine pressing the 'Option' ([ALT]) key. I go into Disk Utility to try and format the new HDD by creating a new partition but I keep getting the messages,
    "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device"
    or
    "POSIX: could not allocate memory"
    This is actaully the third HDD I've tried. The first was another Seagate Momentus 7200 500gb, but this time it was a newer model (model number ended in 423AS instead of 420AS - the new one I am trying ends with 420AS, which is the same as the current HDD). I then tried a Western Digital drive but that one didn't even show up in DU. Forums and tech support are suggesting it's faults with the HDDs but surely not three in a row?
    Could this be an issue with another part of my Mac?
    Is there anything else I can do to format the HDD, have I missed a crucial step?

    Did you ever get a resolution to this issue?
    I am having that exact error with a new 512GB SSD from Crucial, in a 15" MBP mid-2010.
    I really wonder now if the stupid SATA cable could be bad - causing the initial SSD fail.  I am replacing it with the EXACT same drive, and getting that "last block" error when i partition in the GUI or from command-line.
    thanks!

  • External USB hard drive won't reformat, won't appear in Finder, error: Unable to write to the last block of the device message

    So I just got a new MacBook Air and since I had an external USB hard drive (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 1TB) lying around, I decided to use it for back-up. Since I only have just the one hard drive, I decided to partition it into two - one for Time Machine backups, and one for general files (formatted FAT so I could use it with Windows). However, the partitioning failed and I ended up with a partition named disk1s2. Plus, it won't appear on Finder anymore, but it appears in Disk Utility.
    I have tried to reformat it, but I always get the message "Unable to write to the last block of the device".
    Here's the info about my drive:

    I didn't have any data in it prior to the failed partitioning attempt, so there aren't any worries of data recovery. But I'd really like to be able to use this drive again, and save some money (external hard drives are expensive where I live). Anyone with any ideas?

    I'd also like to add that repairing the disk using Disk Utility does nothing but tell me to reformat the drive. So I'm stuck in a loop here.

  • Why does my mac when i try to format my stick say that unable to write to the last block of the device

    i bought a new mac with osx lion 10.7.why does my mac when i try to format my transcend 8 gb stick in disk utility say that it is unable to write to the last block of the device?please help me

    This may or may not work, but it's worth a try.
    Using Disk Utility, try an re-partition the drive into two partitions, making the second partition very small (a megabyte or two), then see if you can format the first partition normally. Leave the second partition alone.
    If this works, then the first partiton is what you will use.

  • Mac OS X v10.5: Disk Utility error "unable to unmount disk."

    Hi,
    I waited for the first update to 10.5 before buying it. When the update came out I installed 10.5 and then the update as recommended in the Software Update menu. Everything seemed to be running fine, so I purchased all of the Adobe updates to CS3 that I wanted. I didn't want to install the new system and the new updates until they had a chance to shake out the bugs. Installed new InDesign, PhotoShop, and Acrobat. The computer ran well for a short while, then seemed sluggish so I checked on Disk Utilities and the repair permissions seemed to stall about a third of the way through. Then, I chose the "verify disk" option and the disk failed! Oh My God....no, no, no!!!, I thought, but it failed.
    So, I put the 10.5 system dvd back in the drive and ran Disk Utilities from there. Same thing happened with permissions that happened before. So, I stopped that and then ran "repair disk." It ran the program but said it could not complete the process because the disk would not unmount.
    I've read here of all sorts of problems with Disk Utilities on 10.5. Is it possible that these problems are related to the Disk Utilities on 10.5.
    I'm tempted to install 10.5 on the other, second internal drive I have. Any thoughts on that idea would be very much appreciated. Actually, any help on any of this would be very much appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Patrick

    OK... I didn't understand that it could take that long to repair permmissions. It didn't seem to take that long with 10.4, but OK.
    So, I ran disk permissions and after five minutes or so it finished and said the following:
    Warning: SUID file "FrameworksInstall.framework/versions/A/Resources//Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    It lists nine different SUID files. I have no idea what those are.
    What next?

  • Disk Utility Error - Unable to Create....

    Hey everybody,
    I've been having a **** of a time creating disk images...
    When trying to create a disk image on the Mac HD I get the error...
    "Unable to create {disk name here}, Resource Busy"... tried everything, closing down everyhting, rebooting ect. Still get same error.
    When I try to create on another external HD I get the error...
    "invalid argument".
    Anyone figure this one out and how to fix?
    Thank you

    Hello,
    I think this might have something to do with Onyx messing with Idisk utility settings.
    the utility does not allow me to specify a disk image size, so it's trying to turn the entire hard drive into a disk image.
    I had to re-install the operating system and it fixed it.
    However, when I installed and ran Onyx the same problem has showed up.
    In onyx I reverted the parameters back to default, but it didn't fix it. I still cannot specify the disk image size.
    I don't want to have to re-install the operating system again. Does anyone know a fix? Is it possible to just install the idisk utility and not the operating system?
    thanks

  • Disk Utility says: "Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)"

    I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive factory formatted as FAT32. It worked as advertised for over half a year before it suddenly stopped working and refuses to mount on the desktop (it is visible in /dev). No odd sounds and the disk or other problems, a different USB cable makes no difference.
    The disk shows up as an empty disk in Windows 7 even though it is supposed to contain a small iTunes library. I have tried to repair the disk in Disk Utility in OS X 10.6.4. This is the latest attempt to repair the disk, copied from the log:
    2010-08-10 15:58:44 +0200: ** /dev/disk2s1 (NO WRITE)

    2010-08-10 15:58:44 +0200: Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)
    Does anyone have any recommendation on repair/recovery applications? I own a copy of DIskWarrior already but DW is a HFS-olny repair app…

    As it turns out, this didn't completely solve the problem, it solved part of the problem.
    Here is a summary to the root cause of the problem.
    SUCCESS...
    Problem Summary : The system crashed and would hangup during boot, tried many things, until I eventually erased the disk and started over again.
    iMacG5 24 GHZ Intel with One internal disk partitioned into 3 logical drives
    Cub_1 OS X 10.5.7
    Cub_2 OS X 10.5.7 (Carbon Copy Cloner backup of Cub_1)
    Cub_3 OS X Server 10.5.7 (standard os x server setup)
    At some point after setting up standard preferences, OS X Server crashed.
    When I tried to restart, the machine would hang up during boot.
    Finally after several attempts, ran Disk Utility from install dvd and repaired Cub_3
    When I tried to run "Repair Permissions" on Cub_3 from install dvd, I got an error
    Disk Utility Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit 1.
    Rebooted, and started in single user mode (CMD-S) during boot until I saw the unix commands on the screen
    RAN : root # fsck -fy
    Then I began seeing the same command filling the screen :
    posix_spawnp("/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder") could not find file or directory
    Called Enterprise Support and spoke to Frank Alcorn, he said this was most likely a permissions problem and asked me to try repairing permissions from the install dvd. I told him about the error, but nevertheless I tried it again and got the same Disk Utility Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit 1..
    He asked me to try booting into single user mode again, and to try
    root # chmod 775 /
    root # reboot
    During the reboot process the machine got hung up again, and could not get the single user mode to work at all.
    Frank said the command needed to be :
    root # chmod 1775 /
    Frank asked me if I had changed anything in file sharing, and I told him I had. He asked me what I had shared, and I said the entire drive Cub_3. He asked me what I had done for permissions, if I had denied permissions to anyone. I told him that I had set myself up as the only user that could have access to it, and when he said that's where the problem was the lightbulb went off, and it made sense.
    Shortly after I set the sharing preferences is when the server crashed. It all makes sense now...
    Frank said not to share the entire disk, only portions (share points) of it. I had done this in Panther Server, and Tiger Server and it worked fine, but apparently Leopard Server works a little differently, maybe more secure.
    It seems to me that if sharing the entire disk, which is what I needed would cause such a problem there should have been some sort of warning from the operating system, but there wasn't. I had run into this problem several times over the past three weeks since I had started working with Leopard Server, but in each case I ended up re-installing OS X Server and starting over again.
    I told him I would try to reboot from the OS X partition (Cub_1) and try it from there.
    He asked me to let him know if it worked, and I said I would...
    Problem FIX :
    I booted back into the partition containing OS X (Cub_1) and did the following via the Terminal.
    $ su - root
    $ chmod 1775 /
    $ reboot
    During the reboot process I held down the (OPTION) key, and selected Cub_3 (the os x server partition) and sure enough after a few minutes of holding my breath the login window magically appeared. So I logged in, and did not have to re-install the server. Hallellujah....
    This solved the boot hang problem. It is great to finally have an answer. In retrospect it makes sense, but that's why its hindsight...
    The reason for sharing the entire disk in my mind was that since I was the only user on the system, it was easier to have one disk mounted on my workstation rather than several folders. It made sense to me, it still does. I don't need a bunch of folders, just one disk is easier...

    I encounter the following error messsage when i run my jsp:
    Fatal Error: Unable to write to the transaction log (/D:/jdev9i_902/jdev/system/oc4j-config/log/transaction.state), possible reasons for this are that Orion lacks permission to write to the file, or that another instance of the server is already running with this configuration (most common): Unable to alter transaction log
    P.S. I have checked the 'Run Manager', no active process has been running. Does anyone know how to solve it?

    Believe it or not!? I solve it by restarting my computer ... XD. At the mean time, i open a MS-DOS window to monitor my netstat ...

    We have two users that have been using Creative Cloud for almost a year. Recently, sometime in the last 4ish weeks, the users can no longer run Creative Cloud apps. (Yes, our subscription is paid.) Error simply says administrator access is required to install. The apps have already been installed. The users cannot run them unless they are in the local admin group.Using "Run as admin" does not work. It gives the same error.
    I have opened a case with adobe support and was basically told to suck it up and put the users in the admin group. Actually, what was said was that it is "mandated that the users have administrative rights".
    There are a couple of things wrong with this. It was working for both users until recently - a recent required creative cloud update. The users have never been local admins yet the apps were working (poorly, but working).
    We are in an enterprise environment and users simply do not have administrative rights on the computers.
    I have changed permissions on all adobe folders, granting users or authenticated users modify or full control rights, did the same in whatever Adobe registry HKLM keys I could find. Nothing has allowed the users to run the apps - unless they are put in the local admin group.
    Someone has to have a fix for this. Adobe apps have proved to have far too many vunerabilities to even entertain the idea of elevating user rights. I can't imagine that enterprise environments are allowing this.
    Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Jeff,
    Thank you for your response. The users in question are "standard" domain users. We do not reduce users permissions below the standard level.
    The apps do not load with their current standard user permissions.
    The thing that makes this odd, is that up until recently they did this issue with cloud apps. The only way I can make it work for them now is to put them in the local administrator group on their pc's - which is not going to happen.
    This is what they now see. As I said before, this was not a problem up until recently they would see all their available apps. If I put them in the local admin group the apps are listed without having to install. Everything is there, just not accessible to the user.

  • How to pick up the last value of the input string

    Hi there,
    I have a requirement in which I have to pick up the last value of the input string.
    I don't know the field length, it could be 10 line, it could be 4 line and it could be even 1 line.
    Another problem is that the field contains all the alphanumeric values so the sort function is not working.
    I believe I need to write a UDF but not sure exact what and how.
    Can some body please help me solving this issue.
    Input.
    1.Abc
    2.abc123atxx.com
    3.(980)771-2341
    4.
    5.518VR50V58AD10DSAYBDSAFDSIEGHA:1
    In that case I only need to pickup the last value i.e. 518VR50V58AD10DSAYBDSAFDSIEGHA:1
    Output
    518VR50V58AD10DSAYBDSAFDSIEGHA:1
    Note:
    1. Length is unknown
    2. Alphanumeric data
    Thanks,

    Hi karthick Lakkar,
    Thanks for your quick response but unfortunately I am getting mapping exception.
    What I did is create a UDF with 2 input
    INPUT
    a string
    b string
    and then this code
    int Length=Integer.parseInt(a);
    int requiredLength=Integer.parseInt(b);
    if(Length<=requiredLength)
    return(a);
    else
    return a.substring((Length-requiredLength),Length);
    I am wondering about the input as well.
    At present I am doing
    KTEXT + KTEXT --- UDF
    + does represent concat, means same input will go to the UDF
    This is the error which I am getting
    Exception:[java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "Kevin Farrar"] in class com.sap.xi.tf._MM_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX_ method calculate[Kevin Farrar, Kevin Farrar, com.sap.aii.mappingtool.tf7.rt.Context@6dbf19db]
