Disk Utility: Extremely slow read phase during permissions repair

Shortly (but not immediately) after I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5.6, repair permissions began taking a ridiculously long time to complete. Looking at the DU log, I see the read phase is the problem: DU spends over 2 hours on this, then performs the repair phase in a reasonable period. I'm using roughly 90 of my drive's 150 GB.
Last night, in Activity Monitor, I saw DU start 4 threads, which used 3-5% CPU initially. Checking later, I noticed CPU had dropped to 0% and stayed there until the repair phase started, at which point CPU went to 3-7%.

You know, don't you, that "Repair Permissions" doesn't actually REPAIR anything?
It does one thing: It goes through the BOM file (and, now with 10.5, the database as well), and compares the permissions on system files and on applications installed that put a receipt in there, and RESETS the permissions to whatever the BOM files and database say. Nothing more, nothing less. NO ISSUES related to the users home folder can be repaired in any way, because there are no receipts for them.
I'm not saying there aren't a set of very specific issues that "Repair Permissions" can't fix. But to say it should be regularly used to troubleshoot and as proactive maintenance is like recommending chiropractic care to fix a hangnail. It probably does more harm than good, as there may be cases where you actually WANT to change permissions, and "Repair Permissions" stomps all over them.

  • Airport disk utility can't read time capsule after a relocation

airport disk utility can't read time capsule after a relocation. Wether I connect ethernet or wifi, airport doesn't read it. Even after reset.

Do a full factory reset.. and you will need to reconfigure it.. that is the usual process when you move networks.
You can do a fully manual setup though. The new v6 utility is just lousy at locating the TC.. if you still have a computer.. even a PC running windows it will do fine on v5 as long as the TC is not the latest model..
Or use iOS version airport utility.. it also seems to have less issues than the mac version.

  • I just restarted my mac then suddenly when it boots, disk utility came and says different option like repair disk, get help, reinstall OSX and I tried to click disk repair but it says that I am um able to repair the disk

i just restarted my mac then suddenly when it boots, disk utility came and says different option like repair disk, get help, reinstall OSX and I tried to click disk repair but it says that I am um able to repair the disk

It sounds like your hard drive either has a software problem that Disk Utility cannot fix or that the HD has failed (mechanically).
Your Mac may have booted either to your recovery partition or to internet recovery in an attempt to repair the drive- I can't tell from your post.
I'll assume that it was the recovery partition.
Try to boot into internet recovery (hold down option command R at restart), and see if you can repair your HD with Disk Utility. You should also repair permissions while you're there.
If that doesn't work, try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If that doesn't work you have a few options:
If your mac originally came with installation disks, you can try to boot from the installation disk and then see if you can repair the HD.
There is a small chance that Techtool Pro 7  will be able to repair your HD if Disk Utility can't.
If none of that works then your HD has probably failed and will need to be replaced, which is not too difficult to do yourself if you can use a screwdriver.

Hi. My mavericks is crashed and when i on my mac always showstha disk utility window. I do everything like repair and all but not fix this problem. I have no back up of my files. Is there any way to reinstall mavericks without erase my old data ?

To back up your data, either use Target Disk Mode and a cable from another Mac (which mounts your problem Mac as an external disk of the other Mac) and Disk Utility on that other Mac, or — and this is all assuming you either have a slow Internet connection and don't want to use Internet Recovery, or if you have an older Mac that doesn't support Internet Recovery — you can create a bootable USB key disk on another Mac and then boot your problematic Mac from that keydisk, then use Disk Utility from the installer to make a backup to another (external) (scratch) disk.  You can also use that keydisk to reinstall OS X, to repair or to reinstall OS X.

  • Repeating error message: "acl found but not expected" during permissions repair

repeating error message: "acl found but not expected" during permissions repair
My iMac is running slow. Processor running all the time. I was told to do permissions repair, so I did that. I get 100's and 100's of "ACL found but not expected" while doing a permissions repair in 'utilities'. It says 1 minute to complete but runs for a half hour. When it finally completes, I can restart the permissions repair again and it starts all over with same endless messages. Even though its says 'repaired', these ACL issues keep coming.
SEE BELOW ... What's wrong? And How do I fix it?
    Kind thanks for your suggestions,
    Vic

repeating error message: "acl found but not expected" during permissions repair
My iMac is running slow. Processor running all the time. I was told to do permissions repair, so I did that. I get 100's and 100's of "ACL found but not expected" while doing a permissions repair in 'utilities'. It says 1 minute to complete but runs for a half hour. When it finally completes, I can restart the permissions repair again and it starts all over with same endless messages. Even though its says 'repaired', these ACL issues keep coming.
ACLs are just junk left over from previously installed OSXs. Just ignore. They have no impact.
Describe your exact issue and computer specs and Linc may run you through a series of tests which may well help you find the problem to your issues. I agree, Permissions repair is rarely required.

  • Disk Utility - repeated need for minor header volume repair...

    Hi...
Three times in the last week and a half, Disk Utility has reported "Volume header needs minor repair". Each time, I've dutifully started up from my Tiger install CD, and successfully repaired the problem. On at least one of the three occasions, I also ran Disk Warrior and rebuilt the disk directory. Today, the same volume header problem is being reported again.
I've had similar minor disk problems in past, but the repairs always 'stuck' for some while. I'm thinking it's time for an archive and install (at least), but I'm wondering if others have run into the same problem and found alternate remedies.
I routinely run Onyx for maintenance and cleaning, by the way.
Is there anything else I might try before the archive and install? And/or is a complete reformat in order instead?
Data is backed up as of yesterday.
    Thanks for any/all suggestions.
    Peter B.

    Allan... thanks.
When running Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc, is anything reported as being successfully repaired?
If I recall correctly, yes... the specific volume header.
I typically re-verify when I boot back to my startup drive, and initially get passing verifications... then (only recently) within days (sometimes hours) the header problem is reported again.
I don't normally check in with Disk Utility more than (about) once a week... but since the problem has recurred, I am of course checking more often.
I have never had this recurring problem before. Reports from Disk Utility have been almost always 'in the green' - i.e. successful verification.

  • Finder/Disk Access Extremely Slow

I have a G4 867 (MDD) running OS 10.4.6. After putting my computer to sleep last night, I woke up this morning to find hanging at the login-from-sleep screen. I force-restarted, and since that point the computer, and especially some components of the Finder, has been running EXTREMELY slow.
    Symptoms:
-Hard drives are slow to appear (I have two on the primary channel and two on the secondary). They will eventually show up, but it can take over a minute for drives other than the startup drive. When I scan them with Disk Utility, they appear fine.
-Using menus and accessing files in the Finder can take upwards of a minute or so. Likewise, switching between programs can induce waits of about 30 seconds.
-Curiously, once inside a program (say, Safari or iTunes), no problems exist local to the program, and it can run nearly unaffected... but if I need to change applications or access a file outside the program, the problems surface.
    Things I've tried:
    -Restarting.
    -Trashing my Finder prefs.
    -Zapping the PRAM.
    -Resetting the PMU.
    -Running Disk Utility.
    -Running Yasu.
    -Reinstalling the 10.4.6 Update.
-Trying to reinstall Tiger (which failed; initially, the DVD couldn't see the drives- then, after I checked them with Disk Utility, it could see them but failed to install after checking the DVD and asked me to restart)
    Can anyone help?
G4 Dual 867 (Mirrored Drive Doors)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP

I got my AE and Seagate FreeAgent Pro hard drive
yesturday and I have the exact same problem.
If I hook up the drive to the computer directly it is
    very very fast.
If I hook it up to the AE it takes about 2 hours to
move a couple fils totaling 2 gigs over ETHERNET!
If I transfer the same files over the same network
between 2 computers the speed is much much faster.
Is this normal or some nasty firmware bug. It almost
feels like the AE is using USB 1.0 for some reason.
You guys are funny. How about checking out the specs of USB 2.0 and 802.11g/n?
    Go here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11g#802.11g
    and here:

Firewire vs. USB tests are here:
    http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/features/39129/USB20_Versus_FireWirepg3.html
    802.11g:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    June 2003 2.4 GHz 19 Mbit/s 54 Mbit/s ~35 meters
    802.11n:
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max) Range (Indoor)
    Mid 2008 5 GHz and/or 2.4 GHz 74 Mbit/s 248 Mbit/s (2 stream) ~70 meters
Bottom line: 802.11n typical is 74Mbps, 802.11g typical is 19Mbps. USB 2.0 typical is 50Mbps.
On the average, you should expect your speed to drop by over 50% when connecting the USB drive to AESB using an 802.11g device. If your device is 802.11n, then you should have pretty much similar performance.
Now, if you increase the distance from your base station, or you put walls in between, the performance of 802.11g will go down "dramatically", all the way to 2-3Mbps, easy. Not so for 802.11n, which behaves much better at longer distances.

  • Extremely slow login hanging during synchronization

    Hi,
I have several clients all working quite happily with mobile accounts but one user is experiencing excessive login times. The home dir is around 6-7GB in size with a decent 100x connection to the server. This used to work fine then one day (with no obvious changes made) login started hanging during synchronization. It hangs while scanning for differences before even getting to downloading/uploading new or modified files. I checked what files it stuck on and tried removing them but it just started hanging on other files. I also tested network connections and tried logging in on another machine but with no joy. I suspect there is a cache or preference that is corrupt but I'm not sure where/which one. Can anyone suggest anything?
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue - but I am just using portable home directories. It only affects 1 user (out of 12) - and their login process takes up to 2-3 minutes - whereas everyone else is lightning fast (<10 seconds). I have repaired permissions on the server using disk utility. I don't know what else to try though.

  • Disk access extremely slow after 10.5.2 Update

I did the update to 10.5.2 today.
    1. I tried to update via Software Update. The update started but then stopped with an Error message (Contact Support) and the system freezed. There was just the spinning wheel on blue background for more than one hour. No more harddisk activity. I finally rebooted (hard way). After a reboot I had a somehow upgraded system. But many things did not work anymore (most applications crashed, mail could not access keychain items anymore, etcpp)
    2. Then I downloaded the complete Update package to do a manual update (happily firefox still worked). After a manual install it worked. It installed fine and rebooted. Now everything works as it should with the only problem that everything is extremly slow. Starting an application lasts about double the time as normal, loading files takes 3 to 4 times more time than with 10.5.1
To fix these issues I tried several things:
    - Fixed permissions
    - Cleared all cache files and forced system to rebuild them
    - Severall reboots
    - Waited until backup completed and Spotlight index was rebuilt
Bootup time is now fine (more or less). Just a little slower than 10.5.1. Application start is still slow but better. But the file access is still extremly slow. This can be observed very well in Parallels which still works fine, but needs 3 to 4 times longer to start (so do all applications within parallels). I checked CPU (Activity Monitor) but could not see anything special.
Any ideas what could be the reason for this behaviour and (more important) how to possibly fix this? I'm thinking about going back to 10.5.1 with time-machine and then try it again with the package install.
    Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Is it slow wireless LAN behavior affecting Time Machine? Check out the third page of this thread, specificallly the post by John Albergo about "delay_ack."

  • Disk utility's encrypted drives and user permissions

I've decided against using filevault based on some of the feedback and research I have conducted. I am still interested, however, in encryption of some documents. I have used the Disk Utility to create a 128 bit encrypted .dmg image. I mount it using my user account, but only as r-x. I see that root has write permission, and so I assume it is safe to write to these drives. What is the best way to make it so that my user account has rwx permissions? I could manually do a chmod each time I mount the drive, but that seems silly. Also I noticed that apple doesnt seem to mount drives using the same files as linux, so I'm a little confused. Could someone please provide some insight to this. Also, *put on tin foil hat* how secure is this? When I access the drive is it writing unencrypted data to the swap file? thanks,

    Hi, iMacGyver.
    A. You wrote: " I have used the Disk Utility to create a 128 bit encrypted .dmg image. I mount it using my user account, but only as r-x. I see that root has write permission, and so I assume it is safe to write to these drives."Were you logged in as root when you created the dmg? Or did you create a read-only image from a folder containing the documents?
To create a disk image to which you can add/remove documents and on which you will have Read/Write permissions:
    1. Log in to your account.
    2. Launch Disk Utility.
    3. Select File > New > Blank Disk Image...
    4. In the New Blank Image window, type a name for the new disk image in the Save As field, then select a location for saving the disk image, the desired Size, Encryption (select AES-128 in the pop-up menu), and leave Format as "read/write disk image."
    5. Click Create.
    6. Provide a password for the disk image when prompted. If you want extra security, de-select the option to save the password in your keychain, but be sure to never forget the password if elect to not save it in your Keychain.
You can then double-click the disk image you just created, type the password when prompted, the disk image will mount, and you can add files to it. Ejecting the disk image will unmount it and all the content you added will be encrypted.
One can use Disk Utility > File > New > Disk Image from Folder... to create either a Read Only or Read/Write encrypted disk image of an existing folder of documents, but if you elect to make it Read/Write there isn't much spare capacity for adding documents as the size of the disk image is based on the size of the folder.
Also, if your comfortable with Terminal, you can look into the hdiutil command for creating and managing disk images.
For example, if in step 4 above you selected the format as "sparse disk image", you'd later need to use the hdiutil command to compact the sparse image to recover disk space from files deleted from the spares disk image. Spare disk images are always Read/Write and only occupy as much hard drive space as the data they contain, e.g. a 100 MB sparse disk image containing 30 MB of files only uses 30 MB of hard disk space: they grow as files are added. A conventional R/W disk image of 100 MB in size takes up 100 MB of hard drive space even if it is empty.
However, when you delete files from a sparse disk image, the amount of hard disk space it occupies does not decrease until you compact it using the compact verb of hdiutil. Disk Utility does not expose all of hdiutil's functions.
    B. You wrote: "Also I noticed that apple doesnt seem to mount drives using the same files as linux, so I'm a little confused. Could someone please provide some insight to this. "I don't understand what you mean. You'll need to be more specific.
    C. You wrote: " Also, *put on tin foil hat* how secure is this? When I access the drive is it writing unencrypted data to the swap file? thanks"To use encrypted swap files, select "Use secure virtual memory" in System Preferences > Security. Depending on the applications you use, there may be a slight performance reduction with encrypted swap.
    D. Your questions imply you're new to Mac. While you may be familiar with Linux, there are differences, especially in doing things through the GUI. If that's the case, my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ has a number of resources that you will find helpful including books, online training, and more.

  • Why is the Restore function in disk utility so slow?

I am using the Restore functionality in Disk Utility to copy my old 250GB Time Machine disk (which is now full) to a new 1.1TB disk.
250GB is calculating to take 11 hours to copy. Both disks are connected via FireWire (old one is FireWire 400, new one is FireWire 800).
If my math is correct, that's only 6.4MB per second.
Why is it so monumentally slow?

That's pretty much normal for a FW400 drive.  Restore takes more time that some copy programs because of the file verification it performs.

  • Disk IMage extremely slow

I"m trying to make a disk image from a large video project.
I don't understand why this is so extremely slow. Idvd does this in 1 or 2 hours.
Dvd studio Pro has been going for more than 6 hours. It looks like it will take 9 or 10 hours at this rate. In the preferences it's set for 1 pass vbr and best.
Something must be wrong. Why should this take 10 hours?
also, I left region 7 unchecked in the region window. Is that a problem?

I started answering you in the other thread (double posted the issue it looks like)
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2225971&tstart=0
Take a look at the other thread. 9 or 10 hours to encode may be correct, especially on the machines you describe in the other thread. How long is the movie (running time?) If you are low on disk space, working off of only one drive and other things can slow things down...
The Region 7 unchecked should not affect speeds, but you probably want to check it as a matter of course....

  • Disk Utility not transferring ACL info during restore

I'm having internal drive problems on a MacBook Pro laptop - had to boot from another USB disk where I used Disk Utility (DU from here on) on OS X 10.5.4, to create a backup of internal disk onto a newly created "sparse" volume located on a different drive than than the original, and when I looked closely at the two there were some differences with them. When I did a "ls -l" to look at both the new copy and the original, there was no ACL info - ie there was no "+", but on the original there was. Very few of the folders/files had a "+" but it seems puzzling that this information did not get transferred to what I thought was a clone of the original.
For example here are a couple of entries from the output of a "ls -laR" on the original:
    drwxrwxr-x+ 204 root admin 6936 Aug 18 12:40 Applications
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root admin 102 Mar 17 2009 Documents
    drwxrwxr-t+ 70 root admin 2380 Aug 17 09:35 Library
and here are the same things in the new image copy:
    drwxrwxr-x 204 root admin 6936 Aug 18 12:40 Applications
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root admin 102 Mar 17 2009 Documents
    drwxrwxr-t 70 root admin 2380 Aug 17 09:35 Library
So notice neither the Applications nor the Library folders have the "+" in the new version. Both these listings are portions of the top level of each volume.
Doesn't DU copy this ACL info when "restore"ing to the backup copy? What other info doesn't get copied when DU does a "restore" to create a copy? Is there a way to make an exact "clone" of a volume using DU or some other OS X utility?
Is there some way to tell DU to copy all this special ACL info?
    Thanks...
    -Bob

Don't know. However, Carbon Copy Cloner preserves ACLs.

  • Disk Utility hangs ("not responding") when attempting to Repair Disk on Time Capsule sparsebundle.  Help.

I am trying to improve the performance of my Time Machine backup and retrievals via my 2nd Gen. Time Capsule from my iMac Core 2 Duo hard drive with SL 10.6.8.  The incremental backups generally take 20 - 40 minutes each hour generally with fewer than 100 MB of data being backed up.  I have read through numerous threads on these forums about Time Capsule and Time Machine issues as well as the very helpful Pondini site (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Home.html) and have tried many other suggestions (listed below), but have been unable to attempt a Disk Utility repair disk on the Time Capsule sparsebundle file.
After locating the sparsebundle 'file' in the finder under Shared/TC/Data, I am only sometimes able to drag the sparsebundle into the Disk Utility volumes and disk window.  About fifty percent of the time, Disk Utility hangs when attempting to drag in the sparsebundle.  If I am able to get it listed and click on "repair disk", then the beach ball begins to spin and nothing happens.  This occurs whether or not I first use AirPort Utility to "Disconnect All Users" from the Time Capsule.  I have given it over one hour to attempt the repair disk, but nothing happens, i.e., not a single message shows up in the detail window.  The beach ball just spins, and Disk Utility shows up in red as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.
Also note that on my new Macbook Air, Time Machine runs quite quickly via this same Time Capsule from my new Macbook Air using OS X Lion (which seems to indicate that the Time Capsule drive itself is OK).
I would appreciate any tips on getting Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my sparsebundle, as I seem to have exhausted most other options (see below) for improving Time Capsule performance -- aside of course, from wiping the Time Capsule clean and starting all over.... (which I really don't want to do, and from what I've read, has not helped some people who've tried this anyway).
    Many thanks!
Although I would like to focus this thread on the Disk Utility / sparsebundle "Repair Disk" problem, I should mention that I have tried the following other things:
    1.  Repaired disk permissions on my hard drive
    2.  Used Disk Utility to run "repair disk" on my hard drive after starting up from a SuperDuper external backup
    3.  Run DiskWarrior on my hard drive, again, from a separate startup disk
    4.  Did the "full reset of Time Machine", a la Pondini Troubleshooting #A4
    5.  Changed my computer and Time Capsule names to simple short names with only alphanumeric characters and no spaces
    6.  Ensured that my Time Capsule is being accessed only via ethernet
    7.  Relaunched the finder
    8.  And finally, attempting to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle - thus the nature of this post

OK, no takers out there, but I answered my own question (sort of).
The answer is that even though Disk Utility shows up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu and appears to hang, it is actually still working.  A bit of patience shows that after about an hour, my Disk Utility was able to show the 1.44 TB Time Machine sparsebundle from Time Capsule in the disk window on the left hand side.  Once this appeared, I was able to click on "Repair Disk" (note that prior to doing this, I had to "Disconnect All Users" from my Time Capsule using the Airport Utility program; otherwise you will get a "could not unmount disk" error).  Again, the Repair Disk function appeared to hang Disk Utility as it showed up as "not responding" under the Force Quit menu.  However, after about 8 hours, Disk Utility did run the entire Repair Disk protocol on the sparsebundle.  The results DO NOT show up in the Disk Utility details window - so even if you are patient enough to let it complete, you will not see anything and may think that nothing happened.  However, you can find the familiar results of the Repair Disk function by looking on Console - find the "DiskUtility.log" under Files: ˜/Library/Logs.
Unfortunately, I was hoping to find a problem that would have been subsequently repaired which would result in dramatically increased Time Capsule speed, but this was not the case.  Disk Utility showed everything to be "OK" and I am stuck with a very slow Time Capsule....
(And of note, my new Macbook Air (OS Lion) Time Machine functions blazingly fast on both backup and retrieval to and from the very same Time Capsule - even though, these are occuring wirelessly via AirPort -- granted the size of this sparsebundle is an order of magnitude smaller at this point, i.e., only 10 GB right now)
Would still be happy to hear of any similar experiences or tips on getting Time Capsule to work more quickly.

  • Disk Utility: First Aid Failed, Filesystem verify or repair failed

    Ouch,
So for some reason podcasts suddenly stopped downloading to my external music HD. Checked the permissions on the HD and it wasn't giving me access to the permissions even though I had permissions. Ejected the drive, mounted, ran Disk Utility and got the message above (subject of this post). The details box says the following:
    Invalid Sibling Link
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
So.... is my external drive dead? Can it be fixed? Is everyone going to recommend pro tools and disk warrior again? Anyone that has a bright idea, I am all ears. I have Time Machine running, but I am not sure how I would restore the drive from that and get my data back. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well, oddly, it just fixed itself. "Bogus" you say? It is really odd. It just mounted itself, all my audio is working and podcasts writing to the drive again. I ran disk utility again and it ejected the drive and I got the same error message. I'm getting tons of conflicts on my system ever since I did my clean install of Leopard, so I imagine it has something to do with that.
