Disk Utility Freezes & MS Word & Excel Won't Launch

Yesterday, my Disk Utility froze when it started performing a Verify Disk and I had to force quit. This morning I was using both MS Excel and MS Word, closed them and when I tried to open them 30 minutes later, neither will launch and I get an error message saying that they "closed unexpectedly during launch." I tried to Verify Disk & Disk Utility froze again. Then I repaired permissions using Disk Utility but it didn't help with the Excel and Word issues. I have never had a problem with any of these before. I just used Disk Warrior to "Check All Files and Folders" and "Repair Disk Permissions" and Test the Hardware. I am still not able to open Word or Excel. Any thoughts??

Hard drive has 30.58 GB available. I didn't run disk utility from the OSX install disk -- am in the process of moving and not sure where it is. Might actually be in my home in another country!!!

  • Word & Excel won't launch after attempted "DiskFull" fix

In trying to fix a not-very-important issue, I have lost access to all my MS Word applications. Here's what happened:
I occasionally have the "diskfull" error message, so I tracked down
an article (see below) and used Workaround #2 to put the "FixDiskFull Issue.dot"
    in my Word startup folder.
Now, unfortunately, none of my MSOffice files open . I just get the
    "quit unexpectedly" error message.
Here is the webpage where I got the attempted fix: http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DiskFullError.html
Here is the Workaround #2 that I tried:
    Workaround #2
You must have Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) installed in order for this workaround to activate. If you have never installed VBA, you will find it in the Value Pack on your Office X or Office 2001 installation CD. After installing it, you will need to re-apply all Updaters appropriate to your version of Office.
Clicking on the following link will download the fix to your computer: FixDiskFullIssue.dot
Install the template by dragging it into your Applications: Microsoft Office (2001 or X): Office: Startup: Word folder. You should now see “Disk Full Error?” on your File Menu in Word, just below the various Save options. If you do not, you will have to perform a few extra steps as follows:
Go to the Tools menu: Templates & Add-Ins. You should see FixDiskFullIssue.dot in the Global Templates & Add-Ins box. Make sure it is checked.
If FixDiskFullIssue.dot does not appear in the Global Templates & Add-Ins box, click on Add, navigate to the FixDiskFullIssue.dot template (in the Office: Startup: Word folder), and double click on it. It will now appear in the Global Templates & Add-Ins box where you need to check it to enable it.
With the template properly installed, if you ever try to save a Word document and get the “disk full” error, just go to the File menu in Word, click on “Disk Full Error?” and you will be prompted to allow Word to close all temporary files. You will also be reminded to perform any desired Undo actions since they will no longer be available after running the fix.
In trying to fix things myself, I have:
Dragged the "FixDiskFullIssue.dot" to the trash, emptied trash and
restarted. In other words, I tried to undo what I did the first time.
    No effect.
Opened Time Machine, navigated to MSWord and "restored" thinking it
would put yesterday's Word back in. But Word still doesn't open.
Contacted the author who says she cannot help me and to try a Forum.
I'm at a loss. Perhaps there is something else installed outside of MSOffice that affects what happens on startup?

I thought of something else that might be causing all these launch failures. This morning I opened an Excel doc from someone who has a newer version. I was prompted to "convert" it so my app could read it. Now, when I try to open any of my own Excel docs, all the Excel I have tried to open since the problem, flash on the screen, and a "converting" slide bar opens and tells me it's trying to convert the file (from what? It's mine!) and then everything stops and I get that familiar "the application Excel quit unexpectedly."
So, perhaps this conversion attempt this morning has corrupted something unrelated to the attempt to fix the "Diskfull" issue.

  • Disk utility freezing

While trying to check two Macs, a G4 dual 500 and a G5 dualcore 2.3, with installation disk os 10.4.3, the attempts were unsuccessful because the process froze when disk utility opens. I had to shut down the computers with the main switch. I tried two different installation disks of 10.4.3 on both computers and had freezes every time at the same point, when disk utility opens. The G5 had already been upgraded to 10.4.5. Why doesn't Apple supply a trouble shooting text as they did with previous systems?

First things first, is your data backed up? If not, that's the first thing I'd do:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Next, disconnect all third party peripherals, and only use disks which are designed to help out your Mac in question:
For the G4/500, a retail 10.4 installer disk (black with white and gray X logo) would work.
For the G5 dual-core, use the G5 dual-core installation disks.
Using the wrong installer disk may not always work, especially because of:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SYSTEMSPECIFIC
If you are using the right installer disk to open Disk Utility with, and Disk Utility freezes when opened from the Utilities menu, then it suggests a hardware problem on machines where Disk Utility won't open.

  • Disk Utility Freeze when using New Image

    Has anybody experienced the following?:
    my system:
Brand new Mac Pro 8-core 2.66GHz
    24GB RAM
    Snow Leopard 10.6.3 freshly installed
    Apple SuperDrive DVD
I am in the process to install a lot of software and I like to make Disk Image of the software DVD to make things quicker to install.
Now what happens is that as soon as I select New Image from Disk Utility (after selecting the DVD on the left menu), the New Image progress window appears and then Disk Utility freezes. The disk image is being created in the background, but the progress window DOES NOT show the disk image status and eventually I have to OPTION-APPLE ESC from Disk Utility.
    What I have tried is:
. delete plist for Disk Utility in Preferences
. repair permissions in SAFE BOOT mode
After that Disk Utility/New Image will work the first time as expected, and then the next time I am getting the same problem.
Any ideas what I could try to diagnose/fix this problem?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your feedback.
As far as making a disk image or not, yes it takes some times to create it... longer? I am not sure because when you install a software there is a back and forth reading/writing, whereas when you create your disk image it does the reading and writing in a linear fashion... anyway to me the big benefit is when you have more than one disk part of an install (Apple FCS, Adobe CS, etc...) once you have created all your disk image, it will install everything automatically without having to feed each disc... and usually I have to do a fresh install later on... and finally it gives you a backup of your software...
    Thanks again.

  • Disk Utility freezes when opened

Hello, I just purchased a new Ipod shuffle and its not cooperating with itunes. I figured I'd reinstall itunes, but the disk image of the latest itunes that I downloaded won't open. It flashes once when I click on it then nothing. So I opened my disk utility and that says "Gathering disk information" but it doesn't continue. Anyone know whats going on?

  • Disk Utility Freezes...

Along with other standard Mac apps, like calculator.... I am getting so annoyed with my Powerbook G4 (running OS X Panther)...
I recently had a problem with what I believe started because of a faulty downloaded font which ended up in me having to re-install OS X using the Back-Up and Restore feature on the Software Install Disc.
After getting my laptop up and running again, I have begun to notice more things acting funny, like my Disc Utility Freezes when I try to select my hard drive from the menu, and the calculator app freezes whenever I try hitting the '=' button, so no more basic math for me, lol........
But seriously, this isn't funny at all, I use my Powerbook for my main (work) computer and I am going to be SOL if this thing goes out on me.... is there anything I can do?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GHZ / 512 MB DDR SDRAM

    Hi there,
I had that message 2weeks ago from my copy of Techtool Pro 4 on my Laptop, it was setup to check my HD every time I login.
The message I got was: "Macintosh HD Allocation Overlap (-694)"
I'm not much of a coder but I assumed it was a directory error or something of the like.
I ran a repair, but it was unable rectify the problem
So I backed-up all my data to a Firewire HD & did a Clean Install from my Retail copy of Panther - worked a treat, though it may have been using a Sledgehammer to crack a Walnut, & yes it took awhile but was the only way I knew how to sort it once-&-for-all (others may know different?).
If you do this, take time to download the Combo update rather than putting update on-top of update etc. - works out a faster update process in the end.
Also these updates you installed, do you repair Disk Permissions (if it'll let you) before & after each update? As this helps your system stay good.
Be careful of iTunes 7.x.x updates - as there are many users posting how it trashed their Macs!
iTunes 7.x.x wouldn't run on my G5 - I had to reinstall iTunes 6.0.5 to get my music back!
    Hope that helps.

  • Disk Utility Freezes on Verify

Anyone with a new iMac (late 2012) with a Fusion Drive having any problems running Disk Utility? I am simply booting up in Safe Boot mode and running the latest Disk Utility for OS X 10.8.3 [ version 13 (444) ] and the utility keeps hanging when I try to verify the Logical Partition or the Logical Volume Group [which is the top level in the disk hierarchy]. I can run the Repair Disk option on the Logical Volume Group and I can also run the Repair Permissions on the Logical Partition without any problem. When I run the Verify Disk option on either the Logical Partition or the Logical Volume Group, it freezes about a minute into the utility. Does this sound like a disk problem, logic board problem, a problem with the Verify option of the DIsk Utility, or some other type of malfunction. I have not installed much on my new iMac since getting it, mostly just Apple software (Logic Pro, FInal Cut Pro X, Aperture 3, etc.).

  • Running "verify permissions" in Disk Utility freezes the Macbook

Ever since I received my new Macbook, whenever I try to run the Disk Utility's "verify permissions", the system freezes up. Disk Utility seems to freeze, and I cannot interact with anything on the computer anymore. The mouse remains functional, but I cannot click on any other applications, change focus or even force quit.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I always thought it was a bad idea to repair permissions from a disk other than the startup disk if you had updated the OS from what is on the install DVDs.
Don't bother with verifying permissions as it takes as long as repairing them. Have you tried a straight repair of them instead? How about running that from a program like Cocktail?

  • Disk Utility Freeze with 10.6

When using the Disk Utility to expand a partition's disk space, the OS Freezes (only time I have EVER had the OS freeze, like MS Windows) and I have to do a hard shut down.
    Steps taken to reproduce error:
    1. With 10.5.8 installed, partition HD in 2 (one is boot camp)
    2. Install Snow Leopard
    3. After install, remove windows partition (it was no longer needed)
    4. Expand main partition to occupy remain HD space that is now unused
    5. "Verifying Disk" shows progress, then whole computer freezes
    6. Mouse is still active, but unable to click anything.
    7. Result to hard shut down
Any input on this issue would be appreciated.

    HI,
Is this a wired or Bluetooth mouse?
    Does your Trackpad work?
Verifying Disk, then computer freezes... not a good thing.
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
    *" Install Snow Leopard*
*3. After install, remove windows partition (it was no longer needed)*
*4. Expand main partition to occupy remain HD space that is now unused"*
I wonder if you should have reformatted the disk for the Mac OS and installed Leopard before you
    removed Windows.

  • Disk utility freezeing

I did a Repair Disk with Disk Utility because of error after Verify Disk. It was all Ok. I did this from Install CD.
I restarted the computer and then I wanted to do Verify permission. Unable to do it because computer freezes and also cannot do force quit. I have to switch off Mac. Why this and how to solve it ?
    Thanks

Honestly I don't understand what will change in opening a new account, what should I notice ?
Use the new (fresh) account to see if your computer still freezes. If it does not freeze, then it means the freezing issue is probably software related on the admin side since no issue on the 2nd account side.
If the freezing continues on the 2nd account, the problem may be hardware related. I would then suggest that you run the Hardware Test disc.

  • Disk Utility Freezes When Verifying HD

Not sure what's gone wrong here--hoping you folks can help me out.
I wanted to make sure my OS X directory was in okay shape, so I tried to "verify disk" using Disk Utility. After a few seconds, the application becomes completely unresponsive. Activity Monitor shows the process as "Not Responding" in red. Attempting to quit the process locks Activity Monitor. Shortly after, the entire system is frozen.
I've deleted the preference files in my home folder, but that didn't change the behavior.
The same issue occurs in my mother's account.
I booted up from my install disc and tried to repair the disk. It failed with the error "The Disk 'Macintosh HD' could not be unmounted. I then clicked the "verify disk" button, and my disk "appears to be OK."
Any ideas what's causing this unusual behavior? I'd like to get things working as they should, if possible.
Oh, and this is my MacBook, running OS X 10.5.6. The Macintosh HD partition is 66.9 GB & 12.36 GB is free.
Just realized I haven't repaired permissions; going to do that now, then try again and see if repairing permissions makes any changes.

    DaddyPaycheck:
I'm running DU from my computer. It came with Leopard installed (I bought this computer last spring). If I'm running it from my computer, I should be running the latest version then, right?
    Carolyn:
*Are you referring to the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist?*
Yes, that's the one! I deleted it, then tried running DU to verify the disk again, but the same issue occurred--the application froze.
*"Oh, and this is my MacBook, running OS X 10.5.6. The Macintosh HD partition is 66.9 GB & 12.36 GB is free. 12GB out of 70 is cutting it kind of close. You really need to be in the 10 to 15% free drive space range minimally."*
If I've calculated things right, I should have about 10GB free in order to have 15% of my drive free. I know I'm cutting it a little close, but this is the best I can do, for now.
As mentioned in my initial post, I can't repair the disk. Disk Utility fails with this error: "The Disk 'Macintosh HD' could not be unmounted." The Verify Disk option does work, and comes back with the report of "The Disk appears to be OK."
I used BootCamp to partition my drive for Windows, so I can't repair the entire drive, just the "Macintosh HD" portion. S.M.A.R.T. status is verified.
I'll give the AHT a go after I get home from class later today. I'll also try the steps in the article you linked--thanks!
If you folks have more suggestions, let me know.

  • Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount

My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
    Hope this helps,

  • MS Word 2011 won't launch

Word won't launch although PP, Outlook and Excel open okay.  Uninstalled MS Office 2011 and reinstalled. From previous contributors I tried fixes by verifying fonts, (no change), completed a permissions verify/repair (no change). Also can't install MS Office updates because SyncServicesAgent won't shut off (even when app is moved to Desktop and forced close via ActivityMonitor).  Are these two related?  What other fixes should I try to get Word working again?    Thanks!

  • Just Updated to 10.9.5 Now iPhoto 8.1.2 Won't Open-Microsoft Word & Excel Won't Open

I have a MacBook Pro now running 10.9.5
I updated last night to the 10.9.5 version and after doing so my iLife applications stop working: iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand
My Microsoft Word and Excel stop working as well.
Every time i try to open these applications i get error and they just won't open.
" iPhoto quit unexpectedly wile using the iPhoto plug-in"
I get this same message for all my applications.
I tried getting help from Apple and all they really told me was that I may need to update to my iPhoto by paying $15 bucks.
I'm upset that my applications have all failed me only after updating to new 10.9.5
This update was done at 10:30PM, all day my Microsoft Apps and iPhoto app were working fine and now I'm out of luck?

iLife 11 is only available thru 3rd party retailers like Amazon.com or eBay.com.  That will install iPhoto 9.0 and you can get to 9.4.3 vis these updaters:
1 - update to iPhoto 9.2.1 - you may be able to go from here directly to 9.4.3
    2 - update to iPhoto 9.3
    3 - update to iPhoto 9.3.2
    4 - update to iPhoto 9.4
    5 - and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3

  • Disk utility freezes when partitioning HD

I cleared off some space on my hard drive to create a 20 GB partition to install Mountain Lion (I'm running Snow Leopard). This leaves about 15 GB free space on the old partition. Every time I do this, the system freezes after 10-20 minutes and I have to reboot. I repaired the disk and disk permissions, but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?

the system freezes after 10-20 minutes
Repartioning a drive takes under a minute, because it clears out at most 1000 blocks in each new partition, not the whole drive.
That drive has probably failed. Buy yourself a new drive, they are cheap, and do not delay your project waiting for this (likely bad) drive.
Once you have your changes in place on a new drive, you can test the old drive by re-writing all blocks with Zeroes to test whether the drive can be salvaged. And this can be done in the background on a working System.
