Disk utility has no 'partition' tab

I may be asking a really stupid question here, but I hope someone can enlighten me. The disk utility app that is on my Powerbook G4 has four tabs, "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Everywhere I read, it seems that there should be another tab called "Partition". I have no such tab!
I purchased a new LaCie 320 GB external hard disk. I wanted to partition it for use. Disk Utility seems to be the preferred choice for this. Am I missing something on my computer?

You guys are amazing. Thank you both. I was indeed not clicking on the parent disk name (where it shows XXGB so-and-so disk), rather I was clicking on the child partition name (the disk came preformatted as FAT32). Clicking on the parent name showed the partition tab, and I used it to partition the disk into 2 partitions, one with OSX Extended (for storing stuff) and one with OSX Extended Journaled (where I would keep a bootable clone of my computer).
Yay!!

  • Disk Utility has been partitioning for about 3 hours now.

Ok so I wanted to partition my internal hard drive for time machine. So I went into Applications and opened up Disk Utility. I then Selected my internal hard drive, adjusted the partitions to the desired sizes and clicked apply. All the options grayed out and the little striped progress bar began moving. This was about 3-4 hours ago and nothing has changed. Someone help please, I'm afraid to force quit it or turn off my mac at the cost of my hard drive.

It's not really a progress bar just an animated blue and white "candy cane-like" bar
If that is the case, that is not a progress indicator, so it hasn't yet started to partition and is stalled. Just stop, there will be no damage.
The question now is why has this happened, and what can you change so that it doesn't happen on your next attempt, but goes to immediate partition, which should not take longer than 30 seconds or so.

  • Disk Utility has been trying to make a partition on hard drive for a long time

Disk Utility has been trying to make a partition on hard drive for a long time, I want to make 2nd partition and install the Snow Leopard on 2nd disk,
Lion is very slow on my Early 2011 MBP.

I am using MBP early 2011 with Osx Lion,
Lion was slow for me and I have no external HD to backup my files,
Than I want to make 2 partititon of my internal HD to backup my files to it, and also want to install Snow Leopard to that new partition using the CDs comes with my MBP.
    After that.
I was using Disk Utility to partition my MBP to install Snow Leopard to my second part. While partitioning my Disk Utility did not complete and wouldn't continue the process, I waited about 30 minutes to see if it fix itself, so I cancelled it and restart the Mac, upon rebooting I opened Disk Utility to try again and I noticed I lost 400 gigabytes of space. I tried to "Erasing Free Space" but after a couple of minutes it finished and the same problem 400 GBs of lost space.
Is there a way to fix this and regain my lost hard drive space?

  • "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."  Trying to format my iomega external HD for use with Mac

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility, the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:
*** malloc[419]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x290a410; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug : for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)
    Workaround
    Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
    iTunes.pkg
    iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
    Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

i'm just scared i will do something wrong on my own and lose my data.
You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

  • 'Disk Utility has lost connection with Disk Management Tool' w/ RAID 10 set

Using 4 internal drives, I have specified the following setup for each:
2 partitions, 1 'speed' of 5 GB and 1 'data' of whatever remains.
The 4 speed partitions stripe to a single RAID volume correctly.
The 4 data partitions are used to make a RAID 10 volume as follows:
The first 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-A'
The next 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-B'
    These complete correctly.
Upon attempting to strip data-A and data-B in order to finish the RAID 10 setup, Disk Utility quits with the following message:
"Disk Utility has lost connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility'.
A search here and on the nets reveals only that this message appeared in 10.3.x when attempting to repair disk permissions and had to do with a rogue iTunes support file. This is occurring on a blank system (no iTunes installed) so I don't think its the same cause.
Note that I was able to complete this setup under Tiger several times without issue, so it seems to be unique to Leopard. Does anyone know what is going on and hopefully suggest a workaround?

To answer my own issue and leave a marker here for others, I was able to successfully set up a RAID 10 partition using diskutil, indicating that the problem is Disk Utility itself and not the RAID implementation.
Disk Utility has proven itself to be bugridden (must restart frequently to get updated view of volumes; drops device names at various times; etc.) and this latest bug would seem to suggest that it should be avoided in favor of diskutil for any serious RAID construction.

  • Disk Utility:  Backup to partition on external drive?

Hi people. Would be glad of an answer and any comments on this.
I have 3 Macs at home, a new G5 dual core and 2 G4 imacs, networked wirelessly. At this point I only backup my G5 to a second internal HD, by using Disk Utility's 'Restore' function.
My preferred plan is to get an external Firewire 400 drive, make 3 partitions on it, and do the Disk Utility 'Restore' for the 3 respective Macs. That way it's not only a backup, but a bootable solution if one of the machines dies.
My second choice is to add one of those generic network hard drives to the router and try to back up to that(essentially as an FTP/Samba disk), but it would be slow and not bootable at all.
Question: Will disk utility allow a partition, either on a firewire drive or network drive, to be the destination for a 'restore'? Or will it only recognise whole volumes?

    Hi, Daniel.
You wrote: "Question: Will disk utility allow a partition, either on a firewire drive or network drive, to be the destination for a 'restore'? Or will it only recognise whole volumes? "Disk Utility will recognize a volume (partition) on a FireWire drive as the destination for a Restore.
Using the Restore function for backup is quite time-consuming as it has to backup everything every time you perform a backup. You will get much faster results by using a proper Backup and Recovery solution that supports incremental backups, i.e. backing up just the changes from the source to the destination (backup) so that the two are synchronized. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
People have had mixed results using NAS (Network-attached Storage) for backups. I frankly think that it's still a bit early to try that route. Using an external FireWire drive has always given be good results.
    Good luck!

  • Disk Utility - Still 'Modifying Partition Map'

I had a 64gb windows partition on my newest revision MacBook Pro, and I didn't really need windows anymore, so I wanted to resize it to 32gb.
I still want to keep windows for LANparties (games), so I decided to remove Windows, shrink the partition, and reinstall it...
Easily said, I removed the partition in Disk Utility, then I added a partition (just HFS for now), and resized everything the way I wanted it..
But now the Disk Utility has been 'Modifying Partition Map' for the last 2,5 hours, and I dare not interrupt it, so I set all the energy settings and sleep stuff to 'Never', because it might kill something :P
Any advice? Is it normal that it takes this long, or am I screwed (I do have a time machine backup).

Okay, I understand that I can't create one for Windows using Disk Utility, but I think it's a bit stupid that now my partition / HDD might be broken ..
Maybe a warning or something? I didn't even think of the fact that Bootcamp could also delete partitions...
So I will now boot the install DVD and try to repair, I have a full Time Machine backup, so I'm glad I did that ..
thanks for the advice, but I think this should be noted as a bug, as I think Disk Utility should not 'break' my partition map if I use it to delete a non-HFS partition..

  • Disk Utility missing the Erase tab

Tonight, I was attempting to reformat my Mac Mini FileVault encrypted hard drive. I have Mountain Lion 10.8 installed on it, and I have a bootable Mountain Lion USB stick.
I booted from the USB device, and first tried to format. Everything was greyed out. I had to "Unlock" the encrypted drive and then it was available.
I then tried to do an Erase, and it failed with an error I didn't catch, and then only "Macintosh HD" shows up (no volume below it in Disk Utility) and the Erase tab is unavailable. The Partition tab is also locked and nothing can be chosen.
I can Verify and Repair with no problems, but I am unable to repartition or erase the drive.
    Any thoughts?

I ran in to this issue once again, when trying to clean install Mountain Lion on my MacBook. I rebooted to the Recovery partition, and tried to format/erase using Disk Utility and that failed and left the system where only the drive (Macintosh HD) would show up, and Erase was greyed out. I was unable to format using the command line due to seeing the message:
"The disk is in use by Core Storage as a Physical Volume"
    I found a solution here:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/59026/how-to-install-mountain-lion-on-a -disk-that-cannot-be-formatted-in-recovery-mode
See the post by Anderson, where he shows how to clobber this Core Storage volume:
Basically, you need to run diskutil CoreStorage list from Terminal. Identify the logical CoreStorage volume from that list and note the UUID string.
Then type diskutil CoreStorage delete UUID where UUID is the string you identified.
You can then partition with Disk Utility and run a Mountain Lion install.
This did the trick for me, and I was then able to 0-byte format the drive and do a clean install over the internet.

  • Disk Utility has been Shrinking disk for several hours....

I have an external HD (FW800/GUID) that has 2 partitions in it that I'm trying to reduce the size of one of the partitions to make room for a third without deleting anything on the drive. Disk Utility has been 'shrinking disk' for several hours and I'm debating if it's hanging. I see no activity on the drive, so I'm not sure what's going on.
How long should this typically take to finish?
the partition in question has about 1.3T of data on it and I'm trying to free up about 300G that's unused.
Should I be concerned? How long should I let this go before bailing the app?

What's the chance that the data will be corrupt if I force quit disk utility?
In the middle of repartitioning that has apparently hung? I would guess it would range somewhere from high to certain. You should immediately use Disk Utility to repair both partitions after force-quitting.
    I didn't make a backup
I hope you're lucky, but I have the feeling you're about to learn your lesson about not having backups in a very severe way. If the drive cannot be repaired at this point, you may need a file recovery utility like [Data Rescue|http://www.prosofteng.com> or [File Salvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1].
In the future, you absolutely must have a minimum of two backups (three copies) of any data you can't afford to lose.

  • Disk Utility Fails When Partitioning FireWire Drive

I am getting this error when attempting to partition my FireWire drive.
"Disk utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I know that Panther users have been having this same error pop up when they attempt to repair permissions. Something about the iTunes 6.0.2 update. I attempted to remove the package files, which was the fix for that issue, and then partition the drive, but it didn't help. This is a different issue. I can repair permissions fine, as well.
Booting from the Mac OS X Tiger install DVD, and using Disk Utility from there, works just fine. I want Disk Utility to work from the startup volume, however.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can correct it?
    Thanks!

10.4.6 Combo Update has fixed the issue.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you happened to be awake and reading this board. I think something strange happened with the 10.4.6 update in the first place, because my Dock is always restored to the default look (I customize it with TransparentDock) every time Apple updates the OS. Also (maybe I shouldn't say this on an Apple board), my iBook is running Front Row, and it wasn't broken after the update, but it is now, which is fine, as long as Disk Utility works.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Disk Utility has Lost Connection with the Disk Managment Tool

    Hi,
For starters, this problem is not associated with the thread that Brian Z. has posted at the top of this forum. Having said that, here's my problem:
I had installed Security Update 2006-003, and Quicktime 7.1. Permissions were repaired before and after each installation, and all went well.
Some hours later, I was experimenting with Apple Remote Desktop. I had activated ARD in the System Preferences>Sharing pane, and it provided me an IP address associated with ARD. I then turned on Airport, and ARD provided me with an IP address associated with that connection. However when I turned off my modem connection, System Preferences>Sharing hung, and had to be Force Quit.
    Console Log follows:
    ===== Mon May 15 2006 ===== 21:09:09 America/Anchorage =====

Thinking a plist had become corrupted, I trashed the following:
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
    com.apple.Remotemanagement.plist
    com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist.
System Preferences started out very slowly, but then all the panes except Sharing would work ok.
I booted from the install disk and performed a Disk Repair. There were no problems reported.
When I tried to run a Repair Permissions, after about 20 seconds I got the, "Disk Utility has lost connection with the disk management tool and can not continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I quit D.U. and the Installer, and was able to successfully run a Repair Permissions from the D.U. in my Utilities folder. It had no problems to report.
Continuting to troubleshoot the System Preferences problem, I then trashed the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache. This solved my System Preferences>Sharing problem.
However, I am still unable to perform a Repair Permissions after booting from my install disk (I get the subject message). Repairing permissions from the Disk Utility in my Utilies folder works fine.
Any thoughts out there on a logical way to troubleshoot where my problem is? Is there a way to get a console log when I'm running DU from the install disk, or a comparable source??
    Thanks,
    Bob

I found this crash log that was generated about the time I had problems with System Preferences hanging.

  • My Disk Utility has disappeared

Hello. My disk utility has disappeared, i can't find. I used the Apple Hardware Test on the Install Disc but it does not find error. What can i do? Help me please. Thank you

You can use your original install disc and Pacifist:
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
That should get it back for you.

  • If leopard won't boot from dvd, use disk utility mount to partition

wanted to share a way that i successfully installed os 9, tiger, and leopard on 1 hard drive. first of all, leopard was the only installation that i had difficulty with. it would not boot off the original dvd, no matter if i held down the 'c' key or the option key, so this is what i did after a lot of reading on the internet to try and troubleshoot this issue.
First thing i did was partition my internal hard drive in 3 partitions using disk utility. the 3rd partition was around 9gb. I installed os9 first on the 1st partition, i then installed tiger on that same partition. then i put in my leopard dvd, and opened up disk utility. and clicked on "restore", and dragged the dvd image as the "source", and chose the 9gb partition as the destination, and clicked on restore. then, i changed the "startup disk" to start from the 9gb where i just restored the image, and rebooted, and went through the leopard setup and chose the 2nd partition as the place to install. this should work with the dvd, or if you made an image from the dvd. I hope this helps someone else whose dvd won't boot, because it was very frustrating after you purchase a faster processor, and faster video card so that your system meets the requirements, and then the dvd won't boot.

Two ways. Use another computer to restore the install disc to one of those ext HD. Then, use it to boot the other machine. Get an ext CD/DVD reader and use it to read the install disc and boot the machine. However, if both the HD and optical reader are kaput, then a trip to an Apple repair station is in order.

  • Multiple app crashes, disk utility has no First AId tab

My Apple apps are almost all crashing; Mail, Ical,System Profiler, iChat, and when I try to repair permissions, Disk Utility loks very different and only gives me a screen to restore a disk - no First Aid, in fact no tabs at all.
I verified the disk using my install dvd - it saw no problems.
Before this happened, I installed Journaler, repaired permissions and also backed up to an external drive - initially using Silverkeeper 1.2. When that said system error, I realized it was not the latest version. 1.3 ran fine. Then I (stupidly) used Macjanitor to do clean up. I see now that there is a more recent version of that too. Have I cleaned out some essential file?
I am reading the link on xlab about multiple app crashes and searching the archives here - any help would be deeply appreciated!
    Phoebe

It was a classic mistake - I did a backup after the update, and had a setting in Silverkeeper that copied more recent files BACK to the computer from the external drive. Dumb Dumb Dumb... Since parts of my 10.3 System and Apps were more recent than the out of the box Tiger Dvd, I then had a mix of 10.3 and 10.4 trying to work together. Big mess, glad I figured it out. Did a clean install of Tiger, then added all my files from the backup.

  • Disk Utility has been trying to make a partition on hard drive for 5 hours what happens if I stop it

I have bee trying to make a partition on my mac Book Pro hard drive with disk utility. It says it is modifying partition map for 6 hours now, What happens if I stop this?

I don't want to erase my whole drive.
Your only erasing the Free Space of your OS X partition, meaning the areas where there is none of your data stored.
Because when Bootcamp works it's going to take some from that to create the Bootcamp partiton for Windows.
If I choose erase does it then give me the option before I press something else and wipe out what I don't want to wipe out just yet?
If you click Erase Free Space it give s a option and then you go.
My dvd player is bust and at the moment...
Well how are you going to install Windows and the drivers?
You didn't read the Bootcamp manual did you?
    https://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
IMO, your not up to doing this, I advise you to stop and forget about installing Windows, because your problems are only just started.
    Good Luck
