Disk Utility Images of Mac OS, Linux and Windows?

Quick questions: am I able to use Disk Utility to make an image of a Windows partition that is NTFS? And, be able to restore it back if I need to? Same goes for the Linux: can I make an image of an ext3 partition, then restore it if need be?

Not of NTFS. OS X cannot write NTFS, only read. Same for LInux. OS X does not support the Linux extn filesystems. You will need to find Windows and Linux software for that. OS X can image a FAT formatted Windows disk. Of course I don't know if there's a DVD big enough for a Windows system or for OS X.

i've found (maybe) a bug. In my application i load some files from the temp dir. In Linux from /tmp, in Windows from C:\Temp.
If i use
file://<TempDir><file>(results in)
file:///tmp/myfile
and
file://C:\Temp\myfileit works in Linux but not in Windows.
If i use
file:/<TempDir><file>(results in)
file://tmp/myfile
and
file:/C:\Temp\myfileit works in Windows but not in Linux..
Is there a "clean" solution without manually check which operating system is used (e.g. some config to set)?

The file size is not an issue here. We tested with empty files or files with smaller than 1KB sizes. They all showed problem. The frequency of file transfer shouldn't be a problem either. Through some user interaction on front panel, a couple of files will be transferred. That's basically how often the file transfer occurs.
Interestingly enough, I replaced the copy.vi with a subvi I created using DOS command with System Exec.vi and the issue of copying files went away. My co-worker tested on both XP machine and Windows 7 machine. The DOS command worked fine thru Lavview's System Exec.vi. I think I can take that as a work-around if we can't figured out why copy.vi wouldn't work. Still, it would be nice to know why it doesn't work.
Now I'm still facing some issues with the usage of Check If File or Folder exist.vi. Sometimes it can detect the existing files and sometimes it doesn't.

I recently tried to erase a seas gate expansion external harddrive and when i did all that shows up in disk utility now is something called expansion and all my opitions are greyed out in the partation tab, it doesnt mount and idk what to do please help,

I would try it on a PC and see if you can format it, then put it back on the Mac and try again. If it's not seen on a PC, then there's the strong likelihood that there's a hardware issue; either the bridge/chip set or the HD itself is dying/dead. There's also the small possibility that the cable is faulty, so I'd try a different cable too.

HI again. installed and then uninstalled both Mackeeper and Blackberry with their software. Etrecheck still shows the same 'failed to load' error. Pasted below. External HDD formatting for use in Mac OS X and Windows

I've been gifted with WD (My Passport) 1TB External HDD. On the box it says it requires reformatting for use in Mac OS X.
I used the earlier discussions. I couldn't decipher the steps details as it was mostly by level 4 above.
Can any honourable member advice me on how to reformat my new external HDD for use in Mac OS X and Windows (As in office and during meetings I might haveto use wwindows system)
Also if done with formatting will this be allowing to setup Time Machine back ups.
Please be sure that I want to use time machine exclusively for backup, some earlier discussions mention that TM can also be used for OS booting etc.,

Normally the drives are formated as exFAT which could be used by both a Mac and a PC out of the box. Connect the drive to your computer it should be able to read it. If not then the system will ask you if you want o erase the hard drive. Select yes, it will format the drive for use with a Mac only. This is the required format to use it as a Time Machine backup. As stated in our post you would like to use this hard drive on both Windows and Mac, you should reformat the hard drive as exFAT in disk utility.

Partitioning drives for linux and windows 7

I want to know if there is a piece of software that is free that can partition my drives so that I can triple boot OSX lion, windows 7 (which is currently blocking...) Linux (ubuntu puredyne).
A little bit of guidance would be much apprieciated as I have already tried fixing the partition tables MBR in the terminal and ended up disabling windows.
I know how to reinstall windows but what software can partintion the drives for linux as a triple boot?

Well, this is possible using Disk Utility as well as the Linux formatter. However, to triple boot will require special software: The rEFInd Boot Manager - Roderick Smith.

Running jar in Linux and Windows

I have a jar(say program.jar) containing a program which uses some libraries(again some jar files).The manifest file is written to look for the library jar files in the current directory.
Main-Class: package_name.program_name
Class-Path: fits.jar image.jar util.jar myutil.jar
But while running the jar file in WINDOWS (java -jar program.jar <parameter list>)
the following error occurs:

the class Data is present in the fits.jar jarfile.
The same jar(run in the same manner)does not give any problems in Linux

[SOLVED]Arch Linux, and Windows 8.1 Dual Boot issue

Hi guys. I recently bought a new laptop, and decided to run Arch Linux and Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 first as recommended by the beginners guide, and then installed Arch Linux. I made sure UEFI was enabled in my BIOS, and made sure everything was on a GPT partition. The install itself went fine. My laptop loads grub, and Arch Linux shows up and boots, but there is no option to boot into Windows 8.1. The only way I can boot into Windows 8.1 is by accessing my motherboard, and choosing to launch the windows boot manager instead of the grub launcher. How can I get Windows 8.1 to show up in grub? Yeah I'm sure I'm doing something wrong lol. I did not install OS-Prober. I think that's where the issue is. I'm missing the menu entry in grub.cfg right? Do I just run os prober or do I have to manually edit grub.cfg.
If that's not the case then here is what I did up until now. What I did was start with a blank SSD drive. I used cgdisk to make the disk use a GPT partitioning scheme. I installed windows 8.1 and checked in windows to make sure it boots into UEFI-GPT mode and it does. I then installed arch linux using the beginners guide. I made sure to use cgdisk to create any extra partitions, and installed GRUB to the efi partition that windows had created ( I did not format this partition ). I then finished the installation and rebooted, and Grub only shows arch linux. I don't think I'm dealing with anything MBR related. I made sure I used the GPT partitioning scheme....i think lol.
All you need to do is run os-prober then run grub-mkconfig. It should pick up Windows at that point.

Leopard / Bootcamp / Vista / Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows

On the apple page it says I can copy files from mac to windows?

Copy, open, modify, or delete files in Mac OS X that you saved to your Windows partition. Leopard understands the Windows FAT32 disk format."
I tried installing Vista in bootcamp, but it says I cannot install in FAT32? So i format it to NTFS.
So here's my question, Can i still copy files between mac and pc, if I format into NTFS or am using vista?

I am quite a simple soul really and very easily pleased.
All I seek is a partition of some sort that I can save all my created work to - whether in XP Pro or OS X 10.5. But it has to be a large partition - probably a single partition on a large drive.
It would be sweeter still for Spotlight to do what it does (and it does on a FAT partition) and sweeter still for Time Machine to be very user friendly and do what it presently does not do and include created files into the TM.
Now that really would be very pleasant. Very pleasant indeed.

Font differs from Linux and Windows ?

Hi, i just want to ask, are fonts different from windows and linux in applet. I use a standard courier font.
For example, if i make an applet with courier font texts in linux, and make the texts wrap themselves, they will run ok in linux. But if i run the compiled applet in windows, the wrapped text somewhow got truncated.
But if i compile the applet in windows, it will look ok in linux and windows.
I've tried replacing my courier fonts in my /usr/java/jdk/jre/lib/fonts/cour*.ttf with the cour*.ttf from c:\windows\fonts with no effects .. Applets compiled and run ok in linux doesnt work in windows. They must be compiled in windows to run ok in both.
Why is that ?
Does the compilation use the fonts in the jdk lib or the system fonts ?
I'm so confused T_T

There's no way with Office X, which can't do Unicode Greek. You need to upgrade to Office 2004 which is Unicode-savvy and installs in your Mac the same Times New Roman with Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew, and Arabic which is used by WinXP. An alternative might be AbiWord or NeoOffice/J.

Multiboot with LINUX and Windows

Does solaris support multiboot with UNIX, LINUX and Windows.

Hello pradyut. It is not possible to boot Solaris 10 from Linux GRUB since Sun uses a modified GRUB which can deal with SUN partition 'slices'. The opposite (Sun grub booting Linux), however, is really easy to do. If you installed Solaris last you can edit Solaris /boot/grub/menu.lst and just add another entry the same as the Windows menu entry, except for the changed name and partition number.
So, for example, with a Windows entry similar as follows:
title Windows
     rootnoverify (hd0,0)
     chainloader +1
just copy/paste it where you want it to go and edit as follows:
title Linux xx.. <- you put whatever title you wish here
     rootnoverify (hd0,X)
     chainloader +1
..where X = the correct partition number of the Linux /boot code. If your Linux /boot directory is installed in the second physical partition (directly after Windows), for example, X would be 1 if a primary partition, or 4 if the first logical partition.
If you are not really sure what partition number to use (this can be confusing and difficult to even describe), you could easily discover the correct partition number by trial and error, or run (in a Linux console) df -h. A wrong partition number entry will produce a harmless GRUB error and return you to the Solaris boot menu to try again.
If you look at the Grub documentation, you will find that it is really even easier to make these changes on the fly (while actually booting). Highlight the Grub menu item via the down-arrow, press ESC, then E. This will allow you to edit that line, and quickly change the 'X' number and try it. Type <Enter> once your edit is done, and then highlight the menu entry to boot, and type B.
Either way, you can return to Solaris /boot/grub.menu.lst and put in the correct number and it will always boot the Linux loader even after updates, reinstalls, and kernel upgrades.
Also remember that if you are using logical partitioning in one of the physical partitions, the first logical partition is always HD0,4 (assuming hard disk 0) whether there are 4, or less than 4 physical partitions.

Oracle CRS across linux and windows

I am interested in finding out if anyone has tried installing CRS across linux and windows - it should be possible (at least theoretically!), by running the crssetup.exe or the shell scripts to clone / add node etc.
This is just for testing (having an idle and a very powerful Windows box idle) - would be great if this windows box could be added to the linux RAC cluster.
Does anyone have the command line syntax of all the commands that need to be executed (without using a GUI such as addNode.sh)?
One drastic way seems to be to install on linux first (copy the voting and registry disks using dd, dd over /dev/zero file), install on windows again and then "fix" the linux one by re-registering etc. - appreciate any ideas on this!

Murali is correct - this is something to do with the format of the voting and registry. I was able to get as far as adding the nodes and olsnodes shows up on both linux and windows - but either cannot get ocssd to start up. Anyway this was just a exercise to see if CRS really cannot work or if it is just a soft requirement.
For reference though, this is what I did:

If I understand correctly,
Using boot camp we can install windows, Linus while Mac OS is untouched. At the time of system start up I can choose which one I need out of three OS.

Another way is , install windows using boot camp and use VMware kind of softwares to install and run linux in a virtual machine.

While I was searching in Internet for the ways to install Linux I cam across the virtual box soft ware , I guess which is similar to VMware. Do you have any idea which one is better?
I am not familiar with Virtual Box. Taking a brief look at their web site it does look similar, but I do not know which is better.
Is VMware is free to dowoad from Internet or shall I need to buy this ?
Parallels and VMware I believe have free trial versions, but eventually you need to purchase them. They are well worth the money in my opinion.

Saw in a forum someone else having this problem and they were told it had to do with their Date and time being off?? I've been on several computers, all with the correct date and time and they've all shown this Insecure Certificate statement on my bank site with Firefox and no other browser.

I've looked at the banking site with IE8 and it does NOT show me that "This connection is Untrusted" window. (please see attached screen shot of viewing the site with IE8) It opens fine and has "Identified by Network Solutions" showing on the address bar as it always does.
The latest version of Opera (not earlier ones) does show a problem with the website's security certificate.
We've contacted the bank about this, and they say there's no problem with their certificate but are looking into it.
My question remains, why only Firefox and one version of Opera claim this and NO other browser?
