Disk utility is gone!

So I went to use disk utility recently and realized that it was no longer there. I started looking through the web for ways to get it back and found all the threads about the disk utility problems for people with mac osx 10.3.9, which i do, when upgrading to the latest itunes. The only problem is, the only problem people seemed to mention was that disk utility wouldn't work properly, I couldn't find any accounts of people losing disk utility completely, nor what one should do in such a case. I searched my hard drive, its just not there to be found. I tried running the powerbook software dvd to no effect, and I tried downloading and installing the upgrade for 10.3.9 again from this site, which seems to have only replaced an incomplete, non-functional portion of the program. There were no downloads for disk utility by itself that I could find on this site. What I need to know is, does anyone know of a way to get back disk utility without reformatting?

There has to be. I checked my 10.3.2 Install disk and it is there. Did anyone follow the "Close the Welcome to Mac OS X window part? You see, when you insert the CD, a Finder Window, titled "Welcome to Mac OS X" appears. You may think so, but this folder is not the root directory of the CD. To get to the root directory, close the Welcome to Mac OS X Finder window that comes up when you insert the CD and doucle-click on the CD icon. It then takes you to the root directory. Now the window will be titled "Mac OS X Install Disk 1" In there, there will be these folders and files:
- Welcome to Mac OS X (See, this screen that comes up is a folder)
- --->Applications<----
- bin
- dev
- etc
- Library
- mach
- mach_kernel
- private
- sbin
- System
- tmp
- usr
- var
- Volumes
In there go to the Applications folder. In the Applications folder, go to the Utilities folder. In there, there will be a Disk Utility application. If all this is too hard, simply search the Install Disk for a folder called Utilities (Go to the "Find" window, Select Specific places for the Search In Property, Check the box next to Mac OS X Install Disk 1---Name is: Utilities). Search for that and it will return with 2 results, then one you are looking for is the 2nd one (The parent directory is Applications).
If this is too hard to follow, you are hopeless.

How can i get it back?

First make sure it's really gone by looking in the Utilities folder. That folder opens when you press the key combination shift-command-U in the Finder. If it is gone, reinstall the OS.

  • External Hard Drive not in finder, but in Disk Utility, info gone? recover?

My external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. Usually, in disk utility, there will be visible the model/make of the hard drive (such as 232.8 GB MDT MD25...etc), and then below that, there be the actual name of the hard drive that I gave it (such as Jack's External Hard Drive). In disk utility, it only has the first one (the MDT... name) and not the other.
How do I fix this situation? Is my hard drive dead? I don't think it is dead because I can hear it spinning and it shows up partially in disk utility. Oh and by the way, it doesn't give me the option of repairing the disk.
    Thanks

Alright, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. The screeching noise is gone. Disk Utility sees the same "232.9 GB MDT MD25..." stuff, but now also "sees" "ROCK" which is the name I named the hard drive. But the lettering in "ROCK" is gray, not black. Also, its not showing up in finder. When I start up the computer with the ROCK hard drive on, finder says something like, "The disk you have connected was not readable by this computer." I try to verify disk in Disk Utility but it says "Disk Utility Stopped Verifying ROCK because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
So buying the enclosure, helped, but it seems the hard drive is damaged or the information is corrupt or something.
What is the problem I am having? (Is it not mounting or is the data bad or whats going on?)
Is there something I can do right now that can make this all better?
My last resort will be to try data recovering software (last resort because it costs around $100).
Thanks for all your help so far everyone.

Delete App Cleaner and never use it again.  Reinstall your OS.

If you have a backup, you might be able to resurrect it from there.

  • Are my photos completely gone if i went into disk utility and clicked erase, or can i recover them?

i wanted to put my macbook pro back to factory settings and re installl the disk. so i went into disk utility and clicked erase, after that i realized i did not put my pictures on my external drive and now i'm wonder even though i pushed erase in disk utility for my HD are my photos just gone off my computer and hidden in files that i have to recover. because i tried a few softwares that i downloaded and i found some of my photos but couldnt get them cause the software was a demo.
main question is even though i clicked erase HD and my pictures aren't on when i re install the mac DVD can i still recover them somehow??

I'm assuming that you were booted from the Mac install disk or recovery partition when you clicked Erase? (It's impossible to erase a disk you're booted from, at least using Disk Utility).
Do you have a backup of your computer, perhaps using Time Machine?
If not, and you still want to recover your pictures, first, STOP. Do not re-install Mac OS X. Installing the system and applications will overwrite your hard drive and potentially permanently lose your deleted files.
The only way you can retrieve your files is by using data recovery software such as Data Rescue. No, it's not cheap, but you have to decide what your photos are worth to you. You would need to run it from another Mac, ideally, and connect to your Mac using target mode.
If you're uncomfortable with that, you should seek a local reputable Mac/data recovery consultant.
The utility kaz-k points you to is not a solution to your problem. It's an Unerase Trash program.

  • Why is the "Partition" tab gone from my Disk Utility???

Why is the "Partition" tab gone from my Disk Utility? How do I partition a disk?

    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc One if you are trying to partition your startup drive and after the installer loads select your language then click on the Continue button. After the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are trying to partition an external drive or a non-startup drive then simply open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Disk Utility App is Gone?

Hi there, I went to run a disk verify & permissions repair and the disk utility app is gone. I tried Spotlight, but it seems it is no longer on my computer. Any thoughts? I have not installed any new software. I used the Install DVD to run a repair and I get an SUID message from what I understand from other forums is harmless, but I would still like to know where my Disk Utility App went and can I replace/repair it?

If you look for a Utility called Pacifist you can use that to extract just that application from your original install DVD.

  • Disk Utility and other Utilities GONE from Utilitis Folder

On my PowerBook G4 I noticed that some icons don't look right and an installer disk (for iLife 06) won't run....So I remember it's been a long time since I've run permimssions repair. I go the DiskUtility Folder and almost everything is gone The only thing in there is Bluetooth File Exchange and one or two other items. There should be about 30 apps in there...! What happened? How can I get Disk Utility back ? Is it possible all these files are actually there but the Mac's directly has just lost them? Perhaps running permissions repair would fix it -- but I can't find it!

Have you tried booting while holding down the shift key? This will force it to boot in to Safe Mode which will force the system to check the disk and to check the fonts. If you can boot this way it may give you some clues as to what is happening. My guess is since you did an archive and install which keeps all of your networks settings, preferences, and cache files intact that the issue is really with one or more of them.
As the problem seems to be caused by Safari and/or AOL I would start by trashing all t he preference files for both applications. In fact it may be a good idea to completely reset Safari which you do by going to the Safari menu and selecting "reset Safari" When you do this it will wipe out all the cache files and other files and give you a kind of new Safari.
These solutions I am proposing a fairly radical. You may lose all your bookmarks, and all or the preferences you had originally set but it may solve the issue.
Another thing you could try is to get a program like Tiger Cache Cleaner or Cocktail or YASU and use it to clean all your cache files.
If doing things like this still don't stop Safari and AOL from causing problems then I think you may have to reformat your drive and reinstall everything from scratch. Make sure you have backups of your personal files.
    Good Luck!!

  • External HD crashed by Disk Utility and all partitions gone

I had a 320GB Seagate external hard drive with 3 NTFS partitions.
    They are 200GiB, 40GiB, 38.1GiB
I tried to format the middle partition into an Mac Partition and failed. After that, all partitions are gone and when I plug the HD into a PC, the disk manager recognize the whole space of disk as free.
the Log of the Disk Utility is as follows
    2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Preparing to erase : “PERSONAl”
2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Partition Scheme: Master Boot Record
    2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: 1 volume will be erased
    2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Name : “PERSONAl”
    2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Size : 38.1 GB
    2009-06-17 21:38:50 +0800: Filesystem : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2009-06-17 21:38:53 +0800: Error with volume erase Invalid argument
    2009-06-17 21:38:53 +0800: Erase complete.
Then a new "disk2" appears in the Disk Utility and can't be ejected easily. There's also something like picasaUpload stuff bumping up during the short formatting.
I tried to recover it using DiskTest 6.11 but it appears to take 14 hr to scan the whole disk and will not necessarily fix the problem.
I have Anyone have suggestion on how to recover the partition? The 200GiB partition is really important for me.

NTFS partitions can not be readily altered to begin with, and when there are multiple such partitions on a drive you should not attempt to alter only one. Since Disk Utility basically can't manage an NTFS partition, when you tried to alter the 'middle partition' (which in most cases is really a 'sub partition' or secondary partition to the 'main' or primary partition) you destroyed the whole of the volume's data structure. Unless you use a data recovery service or use data recovery software yourself, your data is gone. You should not attempt to alter NTFS formatted drives from Disk Utility.

  • At a complete loss. Worried data is gone for good. Trying to fix disk by booting Disk Utility from installation DVD but disk ejects. Help!

    Hello Comunity,
I'm at a complete loss and I hope you could help me.
The machine I have is I believe an early 2006 iMac model. (Model identifier 4,1 if I recall correctly).
Awhile ago I installed Snow Leopard on the machine but have since begun encountering serious problems (but I think it's due to the hardware and it's age rather than the software, Snow Leo was running smoothly) and now the computer won't start - I'm faced with a grey screen and a flashing folder with a question mark on it. I tried booting using the various key combinations and as I understood it, my last resort at fixing it myself would be using Disk Utility on the installation DVD.
    This is what happens:
I boot the computer, insert the disk, press down and hold C (also tried Option). I hear the computer trying to read the disk, but after a considerable aount of time holding down the key and a grey screen, the disk ejects and the flashing folder returns.
Could anyone offer an insight or advice?
At this point I'm not even that interested in fixing the machine, but there are some extremely valuable files that I need to recover (the machine gave out just days before I got my extrenal HDD to back them up).
I'm worried about taking the machine down to the Genius Bar - I'm a completely self-supporting student and I imagine the recovery cost would be huge (if anyone could provide any information on the potential cost of the repair and/or recovery that would help).

One thing to try without needing the install disk: reboot holding down cmd-S. It should reboot to a black screen and text prompt. Type the following, with spacing exactly as shown, hit the return key after each line:
    mount -uw /
    fsck -fy
    Then type
    reboot
    and see if that helps.
Do you have any other Macs in the household (or cna use a friend's) that you can try connecting to it with a Firewire cable? If so, reboot the iMac holding down T, you should see a large Firewire symbol moving across the screen. Connecting to another Mac with a FW cable will show you the iMac's hard drive mounted to the other Mac's desktop.
You can also try Diskwarrior, which fixes drive filestructure problems. It's around $100.
Professional data recovery cost would depend on a) whether the hard drive is actually at fault, b) if it's physically damaged or just has a filestructure problem. A physically damaged drive can go into the thousands of dollars for data recovery; a drive with filestructure issues usually costs a lot less to recover files.

  • Partitioning using Disk Utility Gone Wrong

I have been attempting to partition my hard drive so that I can install windows 7 to my computer (Late 2010 Macbook Pro, 13inch, currently using Mavericks), but Bootcamp was not working for whatever reason.  I instead tried to partition my hard drive using Disk Utility, and after getting about half way through the partition process, realized that I had not changed the size of the new partition to the size I wanted (automatically, the new partition takes up half of the hard drive, but I wanted it to take up much less than that).  I closed out of Disk Utility in an attempt to cancel the partition process, and a pop up told me that I had "unsaved changes" to the partition that would be lost.  Thinking that I wanted to lose the changes, I clicked accept, and exited out of the program.  However, now, Disk Utility is claiming that I only have about 12 GB of space left on my hard drive, even though I had over 200GB left before.  How do I get this space back?

  • After a failed disk utility fix my Macintosh hd is gone!

I tried to do a disk utility repair on my wifes white macbook and somehow my macintosh hd has vanished. I cannot even quit and restart unless I have the disk in, which is useless.....Need Help!

Well, I called applecare to see how much this was going to cost to diagnose and they said it was 49.00 per hour for a technician to try to diagnose over the phone. I hung up.....UGH! I had noticed on the front page of the support on apple.com there was a message about macbooks with 120Gb hard drives and a warranty program. This made me feel more confident my out of warranty hard drive had indeed crashed. I looked online at hard-drives at best buy, and found a 320GB for $59.00 This seemed like a decent gamble to me so I bought the new Hard drive. It was super easy to install and OSX started loading right up with no issues. Tomorrow I will try a trick I read about online about putting the old hard drive in the freezer to recover some media. Hopefully it works as my wife would like to get her pictures back. Thanks for all the help!

  • I've lost disk utility ... anyone know where it's gone.

Since a clean re-istall of Leopard 10.5.2 I can't find disk utility in the Applications - Utilities folder, doesn't show up in Finder either. Had it before re-install ... vanished, any ideas?
    Thanks.

what do you mean by clean reinstall? an erase and install or an archive and install. If the latter Disk Utility might be inside the Previous Systems folder at the top level of your hard drive. If it was an erase and install, you can reinstall Disk Utility from the leopard install DVD using Pacifist
