Disk utility issues

Having an issue with Disk Utility/Repair HD. Basically I ran a disk utility and was told I need to restart my computer using the command R function to enter into the disk utility via the Repair HD. However when I did so, the Repair HD disk utility tells me that there appears to be no issue. Stuck in a bit of a loop right now. Any help would be appreciated.

You tried a Verify Disk while in OS X's Disk Utility and afterwards DU said there were errors and you needed to restart into the Recovery HD to do a Repair Disk? Then, when you restarted into the Recovery HD using Command+R, launched Disk Utility and did a Verify Disk, DU told you your disk was OK and there were no errors?

  • Disk Utility Issues Wait to Install Leopard

    Dear fellow Mac users,
Rather than a question, this is a recommendation to those who are wondering whether to install Leopard now or to wait until it gets really stable.
My experience in installing Leopard has not been positive and I chose to revert to Tiger. After discovering several issues and going to the "Genius Bar" of the local Apple Store, I fortunately have been able to restore all my previous settings.
The loss has been mostly time and money, and they frightened me up suggesting that I had to change my hard drive. For those who might experience similar problems, let me provide some details.
    1. Installation of Leopard
After carefully making a bootable backup of my HD on an external drive, I installed Leopard choosing the Option "Erase and install." This occurred without visible glitch. After updating the system to its latest version, I migrated all my data and settings. The result was an incredibly slow system, completely useless. It cannot have been the results of my settings, because I also created a "clean" account called "Maintenance," with the same results. On the recommendation of the "Apple Genius" I also added 1 GB of memory, getting a total of 1.5 GB of RAM installed to the cost of $150. It did NOT improve the situation.
    2. Disk Utility
Because I suspected problems with privileges, I tried to run the Disk Utility. The result was an endless spinning wheel. After waiting several hours, I had to force quit the application. Tried to run it from the install DVD of Leopard, with the same results. People at the Genius Bar also tried their disk utility after booting from an external drive, without any success. They diagnosed a probable failure of the hard drive and recommended that I replace it. Fortunately, I didn't trust this groundless recommendation and made a last attempt by erasing Leopard and reinstalling Tiger. Now it runs just fine, and there is not the slightest mechanical problem. Apparently, and I only discovered this today, the whole disk check procedure changed with Mac OS 10.5, and at this stage it is a complete mess, with enough bugs in Disk Utility to keep the developers busy for a couple of months. I came across discussions of this on the Mac FixIt Website.
Thus, my recommendation at this stage is that if you have Mac OS 10.4.11 running fine you JUST STICK WITH IT and be patient for a few more months. Upgrading at this stage amounts to loosing time, energy, and money. Of course, I am sure that Mac OS 10.5 has many promising features and look forward to using it in the future, but not now. I would be happy to hear contradictory opinions, if any.
    Best wishes for patience.

    Nerowolfe,
I have installed Leopard and have had nothing but problems as well. Perhaps you can help me. I am ready to roll back to Tiger. These are just a few:
    1. I cannot mount my external firewire drives. I have separately tested each and they work fine, I booted with the Tiger disk and they mounted fine, I reset the firewire port and when I connected them they mounted on my desktop, but not in the finder window and when I tried to open one, it just hung. I have been unsuccessful after many attempts to mount one of them with Leopard.
    2. I appear to get random hangs. I have a 160GB hard drive and 2GB memory. I have 42 GB space left on the hard drive....yet I continue to have random hangs, especially when I try to open disk utility
    3. Spotlight just does not work, period
    4. I keep finding locked folders. Right now my CS3 is locked and even after going into get info and unlocking it, it just locks back and I am unable to open the application. I am a photographer and have been unable to do any work for the past 2 weeks while I am messing around with my computer. Now I have Christmas photos to sort and can't access the photos on the external drives or even open CS3
I have searched the forums, tried many of the recommendations, but nothing is working for me....perhaps since you have been successful you could give me a hand with these issues.
    I wait for help.......
Other than that, how do I uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger????

  • Same Disk Utility issue appeared on 2 different Macs after 10.4.6 upgrade

Yesterday I upgraded the following two different Macs from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6:
    1. iMac G3 400MHz, 384MB ram, Maxtor 40GB HD (update via Software Update)
    2. PowerMac G4 450MHz AGP, 500MB ram, Ata 133 interface with 160GB HD from a brand I don't remember (update via separate 10.4.5->10.4.6 installer)
The update went fine and both computers booted and function normally in all obvious respects.
On the other hand, when I ran Disk Utility on both Macs and verified the startup drive, the SAME IDENTICAL problem was reported:
    Verifying volume “Internal HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Illegal name
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Internal HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
I ran Disk Utility from the 10.4 Install Disk but it says it coulnd't repair the damage.
I'm not sure about how severe this issue is. I'll refrain from reinstalling everything on both computers until more light is shed on the problem. I'm posting this in the hope that others confirm the issue and Apple take a look into it.

Lollo, Welcome to the discussion area!
This error appears to be related to Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, and Adobe Creative Suite 2. See File system, I/O, Illegal Name errors, or system crash after you install (Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, Adobe Creative Suite 2).

  • Mail, Keychain & Disk Utility Issues After Install

My clean install of Leopard seem to go fine. After restart it wanted to grab an Apple Remote Desktop update, I believe, via software update. Re-installed clean copies of further mac software and known Leopard compatible 3rd party apps.
My problems started to appear when I used migration assistant to transfer 2 accounts from my 10.4.10 backup. Both accounts went over, but on one the mail upgrade process consistently failed and on the other the keychain seemed to be of no use.
All's fine now, I manually imported the errant mail acount and just started with a fresh keychain on the other offending account. I know the backup was sound as I subsequently used it to restore a Tiger install as a fallback on another disk.
My last issue appears every-time I run Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions. I get the following text displayed part way through a verify and or repair.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The verify/repair completes and I can quit Disk Utility. I'm presuming this is as a result of the early software update Leopard wanted to perform and the current shipping version of Disk Utility has no idea of the desired permission state of this file?
Was just wondering if anyone else had experienced any of the above or had any explanation?
Hope you're all having more fun than headaches with Leopard.

  • DVD Drive dropping off grid, followed by Finder and Disk Utility issues

I'm having a very strange series of problems with my 8 core 2.8 MacPro.
A few weeks back I did a DIY repair/replace of my optical drive. For the last few months it was failing to open when the eject button was pushed. The drive would make a noise as if it was going to eject but it would take more and more time/tries to fully engage. After a few calls to Applecare and a few attempts of trouble shooting I got a replacement drive.
And now I'm having a whole slew of other problems and am at a loss as to what is causing them and how to fix them.
The drive ejects beautifully...for a while. But for some odd reason after an indeterminate period of time (by which I mean it's not consistently the same amount of time), the drive simply ceases to exist in the eyes of the computer. It will not show up in "About this Mac" (all that shows up is a blank screen when I click the "Disc Burning" section of "More Info"). It will not eject any disc that is in the drive (which shows up in finder sometimes...even if it can't be played by the DVD player application). It doesn't show up in Disk Utility.
In fact, after a while nothing shows up in Disk Utility. It gets frozen on "Gathering Disk Information" and doesn't show any of the hard drives (yet all of them show up in the Finder window and on the desk top).
And then the great grinding down of operations goes into full swing - sometimes the finder window won't open. Applications won't quit. Going to the Finder/desktop results in Beach Ball of Death. Yet I can force quit using the Dock. Sometimes I can shut down, sometimes I need to use a hard shut down using the power button.
I have rebuilt permissions. I've used Disk Warrior to rebuild/repair all disks. I've unplugged all external hard drives. And upon restarting, things will work...for a while...and then things start going wrong in a domino effect.
I haven't seen any pattern in regards to programs being used (it doesn't, for example, start after I launch any specific program.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated before I call Applecare again!
    Thanks

Thanks for the hard drive tip. I'll see if that helps...
Wish I could tell you what drive I have but today it didn't work upon start-up and I didn't realize it until I started to process/compress something.
Forgot to mention two other things...
    1) I did a virus scan and everything came clean
    2) This all started last week after coming home and doing an Apple automatic software update. Unfortunately I don't know what it was and not sure if it is linked, as I swapped out the drive right before I left for a long weekend (so only tested the new drive briefly)

  • Hard Drive Issue? Disk Utility issue?

Every once in a while i run disk utility to see if my disk is running properly. I ran permissions and got all of this in the log window. I then ran DiskWarrior and rebuilt my directory, then re-ran permissions again, again getting the same log below. What does all of this mean, and what can i do to fix this?

    Nothing to worry about.
and what can i do to fix this?
Nothing - Apple will need to clean this up, which they will probably do with some future update. In the meantime, there's no need to worry about any of the above.

  • DISK Utility issue..Please HELP

OK I had a 200 GB Hard Disk that I was using on my Windows machine. Since I am a Mac Guy now, I decided to buy an external USB enclosure, and use this as extra storage space. I am using DISK Utility to first partition the drive (1 partition) and then proceeded to Erase with zeros (1 time). Last night when I started this process it estimated a completion time of 3 hours. A few hours later it estimated at 1 hour and 16 mins. That was 8 hours ago. I hear the disk making noise as if it is writing, but I do not see any progress.
I was doing a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and had the Install Mac OS 9 Disk Driver option checked. Not sure what difference this makes as all I want to use this disk is for storing photographs.
Has the process failed and am I in an eternal wait state? Does it normally take this long? Should I keep it running for the next 24 hours just to see? Suggestions please...
    Thx in advance.

Well it sounds like Disk Utility has hanged. Open up Activity Monitor Applications/Utilities. If it is hung it will be in red...I'm pretty sure, I don't really remember the last time an app hung on my machine.
If everything is fine, it might just be that it's a big drive and it takes along time.
BTW, it seems sort of backwards to me to partition and then erase. If I were I would erase the disk FIRST, using the format you described, and THEN partition.

  • OS X 10.6.8 Disk Utility Issue

    I am running OS X 10.6.8
Through disk utility, I have been informed that the hard disk needs to be repaired by booting from my OS X disk, and running the utility. The problem is I can't find my disk. Any other solutions?

When you restart with the shift key held down, that's called a safe boot. One of the actions a safe boot does is to do some disk maintenance, and it may take care of your disk repair. Might not, but it might.
If that doesn't do it, if you have another mac you can attach via a firewire cable, you can reboot your iMac holding the T key down, then, with the iMac in target disk mode, you can run the disk repair from the other mac on the iMac's hard drive.

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Since I upgraded to Lion 10.7.2, my external HD is no longer visible in AirPort utility (in the AirPort disks tab). I also installed the AirPort utility for iOS5, it reported a disk problem, but running Disk Utility on the Mac showed no issues. Help!

To expand on the question, I have performed the following steps:
1 - Unplugged external drive (1TB WD MyBook) from the Time Capsule
2 - Reconnected it. At this point, AirPort utility for iOS5 reported a problem with the disk (Time Capsule light was blinking Orange)
3 - Unplugged external drive, connected it to MacBook Pro, ran Disk Utility. It found no problems (disk visible straight away on the MacBook Pro).
4 - Reconnected to Time Capsule - still doesn't show up under the "Disks" option under Air Port utility. Or rather, the hardware is visible (i.e the physical disk) but not the volume.
5 - I tried another external hard drive, and the volume also doesn't appear in the Disk section under the AirPort utility.
The WD disk is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
This is a big problem for me, as the drive houses my iTunes library.
Anyone else had a similar problem? It all worked flawlessly until last week.

    I love computers.
Have managed to fix this already. Been working the issue for a few days now, and a few minutes after writing the above post I decided to reset the Time Capsule to factory default settings.
After entering all my details again (used same network names, passwords etc) the Time Capsule was rebooted. When it came back on line - guess what? Yep, the MyBook WD drive is now visibile. I can connect via the network from my other machines to the drive, and iTunes is back.
So - thought I would post my resolution in case it helps others.

  • My WD hard drive won't "mount" it shows in disk utility but can't be repaired. I'm thinking this is a software issue since the disk is being recognized.

    I
I have a WD drive that won't "mount". Tried repairing, turning off and back on, unplugging and nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

The WD Passport has no independent power supply, relying instead on getting power from a USB port on the computer. AS the drive ages it can need more power to spin the platter and many USB ports on notebook cannot provid that much.
Anther issue is the WD drive itself. WD uses an odd proproprietary formatting scheme that makes the drive not always behave like typical Mac drives.
If the drive contains nothing you need to access, use Disk Utility to reformat it to "Macintosh Extended (Journalled)"
If the drive contains important data, there are a couple of inexpensive ways to get more power to it:
    1) Get a "Y" conenctor cable like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/
It draws power from two USB ports and ofter that is enough to make the drive work.
    2) Get a powered USB Hub:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
It has its own power brick and that is usually enough to get an older USB external drive recognized.

I'm setting up a Mac Pro with Leopard and have four Maxtor 6G160E0 160GB hard drives that I'm trying to set up as two Mirrored drive sets. Everything seemed to go fine, created the two mirror sets, installed Leopard, configured and tested two user accounts and Office 2004, then updated everything to the latest version. When done I shut it down planning on moving it to it's final home tonight.
But, when I turned it on both mirror sets were degraded - all four drives were still recognized as RAID slices but came up as failed in the RAID tab. I saw no errors reported in the log so I assumed that those two drives were faulty. I shut down, moved the good drives to bays 1 & 2 and rebooted.
First reboot gave me a prohibition symbol instead of the usual Apple. Powered down and on and it booted fine but the second drive came up as a failed RAID slice. Rebooted again and both were fine.
I reinstalled the two "failed" drives and reformatted them - both reformatted fine and mounted without problems. I unmounted the new partition just in case, but, when I tried to rebuild the RAIDs I get the following in the error log:

I'm at a loss at the moment. I am leaning towards bad drives, but FOUR bad drives all at once is suspicious.
I've searched for similar issues and found none so I thought I'd check here and see if anyone had any ideas.

    G'day Zeekm,
Thank you for that. I did this and it seems to work. The Disk Utility GUI does not seem to work.
    Hope this helps some one,

  • Anyone know Disk Utility, Ignore Ownership, and disk image DL DVD issues?

I am currently having issues with backup DVD's I burned using Disk Utility. I can put the dual layer DVD's in and the system reads them. When I try to pull a file off the Dual Layer DVD a circle with an X appears notifying me that I cannot copy the files to my desk top.
When I check the DVD's permissions it reads Admin (me) read and write with the ignore ownership checkbox checked...which means I should be able to pull files off the DVD. The only way I can currently get information off the DVD is to duplicate the entire disk to a new folder by selecting the DVD while holding down the Cntrl key and selecting duplicate. I have had other issues with DVD's and disk images in Leopard....including having to eject either through disk utility or by selecting the image with the Cntrl key held down. Finder eject, keyboard eject, and the menu eject selections suddenly report that the disk is in use.
The DVD's were burned by creating a dual layer dvd image through disk utility with the read/write option checked.
After duplicating 2-3 disks, the system itself is unable to mount any more disks from the series of backups. When I look at disk utility it reads that the disk is not mountable. I have to restart my computer so the system can continue to read the backups.
My Itunes disk backups are marked the same way (ignore ownership) with admin read/write privlages....I have no problem pulling files off these disks.
I have tried both logging in as root and booting from an external drive...same problem. Is this some nasty Disk Utility bug? Is anyone else having bizarre permission related issues with Disk Utility and Disk Images.

When you create the image in Disk Utility, did you
    change the 'Partitions' setting?
If you leave it to read 'CD/DVD', it will create a ISO9660/UDF image.
To be able to maintain permission and extended file attributes, you
need to select 'GUID Partition Map'.
I assume you used iTunes to create your music backup?
It seems it creates the correct image type for you.
Before sending this message, I actually created a single layer image,
copied some files to it and gave additional permissions to other users on my system.
Afterwards I copied the files to my Desktop, verifying that the attributes are still intact.
    Best regards
(It took quite a while to burn this 4x DVD-RW Anyways, I hope I could help)
