Disk Utility Launches at Startup?

Hello all. I recently had an authorized Apple service center replace my original MBP 160gb HD with a Seagate Momentus 500gb HD. I cloned the drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, and everything seems to be working fine. However, since the upgrade, Disk Utility launches automatically at startup. I checked the StartupItems folder, and it's not there, so I don't get it. I haven't installed any new apps since I got the drive installed.
For what it's worth, my battery seems to get drained a little faster now and the HD is a touch noisier, but that doesn't really surprise me since it's such a big drive for a laptop.

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, click on your account, and remove it as well as anything which may launch it from the list of login items.

  • Disk Utility launches when I insert a DVD-R

I burned a DVD-R on my MacPro 1,1 using an .iso file and Disk Utility. I ejected the disk, then inserted it into my MacBook Pro for verification. It mounts properly and I can see the disc's contents. Awesome.
However, when I insert it back into my MacPro, where it was originally burned, it doesn't mount. Instead, it launches Disk Utility. Furthermore, the disc doesn't show up in Disk Utility; just the drive info (i.e., SONY DVD RW DW-D150A). No DMG, no ISO, nothing.
Other discs won't mount on my MacPro either. However, I just burned a disc successfully on it--so, it'll burn good discs, but can't mount them. I suppose the drive is bad, but wouldn't all functionality be unavailable if it was damaged? It can burn, but not read? Strange.
    All help appreciated!

    Interesting...so I changed this setting.
The DVD mounts but the system think it's empty, and it shows up as an Untitled DVD on the sidebar and with the Burn icon next to it. When I take the DVD out and put it in my MacBook Pro, it mounts and displays the contents that are actually on it, contents that were burned with the MacPro that thinks it's a blank disc!
    Now I'm really confused. :-\

  • Disk Utility cannot repair startup volume, and where's my AppleCare cover?

    Hi all,
The 250GB SATA drive on my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz has some 'issues' that Disk Utility cannot repair. It says, "Invalid sibling" and something about "key not found" or "keys out of order". I've run fsck -fy in single-user mode but it drops out saying "(4, 18880) error".
I have AppleCare Protection for it until November, but when I log into Apple's site, it says I have no current agreements. I'm at work at the moment and don't have my serial number, so I can't really call them up (and I don't have their phone number to hand...).
Is the hard drive covered under AppleCare?
I don't want to purchase any more software to fix the disk, i.e. Alsoft's DiskWarrior, unless it can be delivered instantly and will work on these problems?
Any help is much appreciated :o)

    Thanks for that.
I was willing last night to re-install the OS to see if it was a software problem, but booting into the Tiger install DVD reported the same problems, however it was a little more informative than fsck. It says there are issues on the first two partitions on the boot drive. (I have OS X, Apps and Games partitions on that drive.)
I tried repairing the partitions in different orders, just in case it would help, but it still failed.
If I were to call AppleCare while at work, without the serial number, would they be able to locate my agreement and sort out a repair? APP was bought with the machine and I assumed it would've been registered at that time, but the website says I have no agreements...? Anyone got their phone number?

  • How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk?  I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t  HELP!!!

Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook.

  • Disk Images will not mount and Disk Utility will not runru

I am having some major problems with Disk Utility, Disk Images, and software update. First, Disk utility will not open or run. When I double-click the application icon, nothing happens, no message, nothing. I am running OSX 10.4.11. I have deleted diskutility prefs. I am able to run Disk Utility from the Startup DVD of Tiger. On first run, it verified and repaired permissions. I run verify and repair permissions several more times from Startup DVD and everything is fine. But Disk Utility on my startup HD will not work. Similary, NONE of my disk images will mount. No matter what Disk Image i try to mount, nothing will. And I cannot use Disk utility to mount them! So, no matter what I download, no images will mount. And thirdly, when I try to run software update, it will not work. I do get a message: it says, "Could not load Software Update." Finally, i tried to download Onyx to delete log files, etc.. but again, the disk image will not mount. I was able to install a dashboard widget called "maintidget" and was successful in running the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks. Can anyone help? Everything else works fine!!! All apps! Safari, Mail, iTunes, MS Office, everything works fine. Thanks for ANY help!

Previously, I had run verify permissions, repair permissions multiple times(from startup DVD) - no probems found. Deleted disk utility prefs. Run the maintenance taskes (daily, weekly, monthly). Nothing worked. But, I forget to check the drive for problems. So I ran disk scan. It found "invalid node" and repair disk could not do it. So, do I erase and do a fresh install or get DiskWarrior? I am running Leopard so I do not have Time Machine but I have backed up my documents, iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, etc... Another thing I found out the hardway is to sync all your bookmarks, mail settings and messages, etc... with .mac if you have an account. Any more suggetions?

  • Disk Utility doesn't run from installation dvd.....

    hi there:)
i ran a scheduled maintenance check using Onyx. It turned out that the disk could not be verified and it had to be fixed by inserting the installation dvd and running 'disk utility'. i inserted the dvd and ran the 'disk utility', however, it quit unexpectedly. the following message came up:

    Rik,
Please reread my first post carefully & make sure you follow its instructions closely. The "Repair Disk" step (not the verify one) should be run while your Mac is started up from the install disk, then the "Repair Permissions" step should be run after you have restarted normally.
Some background info that may be helpful:
Disk Utility (& all such disk utilities) must temporarily "unmount" a disk to affect a repair of its file system (which is what the "Repair Disk" step does). Unmounting a disk makes it unavailable for normal use. The disk containing the operating system that is currently running the computer (the startup disk) cannot be unmounted. This is why the "Repair Disk" button is grayed out if you run Disk Utility with your startup disk as its target.
Repairing permissions does not require unmounting the disk but it does require a healthy file system, which is why the disk repair must precede it. Apple recommends repairing permissions on the start up disk while booted from it, which is why it should be done after restarting normally.
The verify steps do not actually repair anything. They just run the checks that the repair steps run to determine if any repairs are needed & report the results of those checks.
The routine that repairs permissions is part of the OS itself. Disk Utility, Onyx, & all other such utilities that repair permissions actually just tell the OS to perform this routine. Thus, it doesn't matter which one you use to do this repair, nor is one utility any better than another at doing this. So if you prefer, after restarting after doing the disk repair from the install disk you can do the permissions repair with Onyx.

    Sincerly AppleNoob92
p.s i have no experience in apple imac's at all never used before, but im kinda windows nerd so computers i understand but this imac make my insane, cant seem to find any solutions anywhere on the WWW....

Your HD may be crashed, so you probably should use the oringinal install discs to run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode. If error codes appear this confirms a hardware failure. In addition you cannnot repair the HD using Disk Utility from the startup disk, you have to use the origninal Install discs that shipped with the computer or the most up-to-date version of OS X on a disc that you have.

  • Disk utility says "keys out of order,...  HD could not be repaired"

I have been trying to install osx 10.4.3 (just the update version) from the store bought kit. It fails during check of destination volume. First I found out that it was not a good idea to have 3rd party memory installed so I removed that, but no change. I have tried to repair HD using disk utility launched, at first from 10.4.3 install disk, then from original 10.3 install disk. Disk Utility now says:
    Keys out of order
    Rebuilding Catalogue B-tree
the volume Mac HD could not be repaired
Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit -9972
1 volume could not be repaired
Shortly after I install these 2 sticks of memory yesterday (referenced above), I was having troubles. Don't remember exactly what or what sequence, but got the locked beachball 2 or 3 times. At some point, there was a 'static' type "POP" over the speakers and maybe from the tower too but at that instant the desktop background reverted from some green apple swirls to the default blue swirls. Other than that everything continues to work perfectly fine. Static electricity is really non-existent here ; very humid, and I was carefull during install of the memory.
I made a disk image yesterday to back up selected files prior to trying to load 10.4.3 and not sure if I may have done something wrong there....
I have some 3rd party software installed like Nikon scan, Audacity, Firefox. What else do you need to know?? How do I fix the HD? How can it be messed up if everything is working normal?

It's not likely that the memory installed caused the corruption of the B-Tree, more of a coincidence that you noticed it soon after the installation. To fix a problem of that magnitude, you have two options:
    1) Back up all of your important data, erase the hard drive, and reinstall everything.
    2) Buy a program such as DiskWarrior to fix the B-Tree without requiring you to erase your hard drive.

  • Mac HD displays as "media" in disk utility, Other problems.

    Hey all,
I've got a couple problems here.
First being my hard drive is failing, I am aware of that. Not much I expect from you guys for that.
Second, my backup files have been corrupted and unusable.
Third, I can not get to single user mode.
Fourth, permissions on startup disk are most likely corrupt, stalling the system.
Fifth, Disk Utility identifies the startup disk as "media" using install CD.
So here's the deal.  It started as: I suspect I had corrupted files in a folder that I can neither find nor rectify.
Upon doing backups with time machine, The program & computer would freeze for hours on end (most likely hung up on this/these corrupted files), no new backups resulted, and for some reason the original backup from a year ago disappeared.  This could have been a problem from a failing harddrive, I'm not sure.
Which leaves me with no backup to start over from.  (And a total loss of years of photos and documents)  :-(
I can not load osx from the hard drive, it just gives me the hopeless folder with a question mark.  I have tried Cmd-S, to no avail.  No safe mode and holding Cmd on startup gives me nothing.
I have done the Cmd-Option-P-R with success but no helpful fixes.
So, I can sometimes, with luck, restart the computer (no buttons pressed) and I will get to the blue screen before the log in window (computer set up for multiple users, but only because of migration's automatic setup on a new computer)
But I get the spinny gear and then a sort of reset back to the blue screens (light blue, darker blue, spinny gear, reset, repeat).
I assume this has to do with a screw up in permissions or privileges amongst users and is confusing itself.
I suspect that there was an issue with backing up files in relation to this.
What if anything, can I do to reset the permissions/privileges without being able to get past the log in screen?
I can get to the Disk Utility on the Mac OS install disk but it only identifies the startup disk as "media." I understand that it's most likely because of a failing hard drive.... But is there any way to access the hard drive before the CD install disk kicks in, or regular booting starts, in the off chance the hard drive is functioning?
Also, is the terminal on the install disk software able to run fsck?
Would it be possible to clone the hard drive info (if the hard drive still works) and pop it in the machine without recourse?
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks

I have exactly the same problem.
Tried all the usual things, like safe boot, and PRAM resets.
Because the drive shows as a zero byte device you can't repair or reformat it.
I did managed to get it to correctly appear and run following a very cold reboot, but it soon vanished when running disk repair.
I fear that either my HDD or the controller is kaput? Any thoughts?

  • How to use disk utility with mavericks

Since I upgraded to Mavericks via download, how do I run disk utility on the startup drive? In the past I'd restart my computer with the system disc but that's not an option. So what's the procedure now? Thanks in advance.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Who else sees "underlying task reported failure" in Disk Utility in 10.4.4?

I'm running 10.4.4, and often when I run Disk Utility on my startup volume in "verify" mode, I get this error:
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
There's a tech info article on this subject (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302411), which implies that one can resolve the issue by upgrading to 10.4.3 or later, however it is occurring for me in 10.4.4.
How many others are seeing this as well?

    Hello Kyle,
I am getting the "underlying task reported failure on exit." every time I click the verify disk button in DU.
Your current profile in the message posted: Mar 6, 2006 4:55 PM shows Mac OS X (10.4.5) but the reversed User Profile for Kyle Tornquist indicates the operating system is Mac OS X 10.4.2. Are there Mac OS X 10.4.2 installed on another partition?
Actually, there are two types of the error messages; the one you are reporting "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." And another long standing issue that goes with "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"
The one you're encountering can be solved by "fsck -fy" solution after a single-user boot unless if you have not been restarting the computer repeatedly. Perform 'fsck -fy " for two times. Technically, Disk Utility implementation has been changed since Mac OS X 10.4.3. The error accompanied with (-9972) is a critical in some developments. If "fsck -fy" does not solve your issue, please let me know. You may need further troubleshooting because your iMac G5 has a single internal hard drive storage bay for Serial ATA. I need to know whether you can find a Power Mac G5 that two hard drive bays for Serial ATA specification.

  • Disk Utility - Disk Verify

when i hit disk verify the color wheel comes up and turns for a very long time. I do not see any other activity other than "verifying disk". nothing else happens for a while so I abort. is this normal does it take a very long time to verify? I thought I would see a list of actions unfold... thanks.
Can i go straight to repair permissions? or how can i repair disk?

Took four minutes for a 70gig disk drive. Except for the first line, all info printed out at the end. I could hear disk noise. Run activity monitor to see if anything is happening.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> activity monitor

  • How to enable disk utility verify/fix permissions

My iMac is running os x 10.6.8 snow leopard.
A month ago the system(software) was re-installed by apple store for a fixing of booting panic.
It's all fine know but I found the disk utility's verify/fix permissions functions were disabled. My question is: what'll cause this and how to enable them?
    Thanks

You mean verify/repair disk, not permissions.  Forget about repair permissions.  It's a waste of time.
As for verify/repair, you cannot repair the volume you are booted from so you need to boot from some other bootable volume.  That could be Disk Utility launched on your Installer dvd or a external bootable backup.

  • Disk Drawer Opens on Startup

My CD drawer is not functioning properly. The drawer opens on startup and will not stay closed therefore it is not able to read a CD. I have read other posts and have done the following:
Run Disk Utility -- one problem seemed to be solved after running Disk Utility. On startup I no longer get the message, "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." initialize, ignore, eject
But I still can not use my CD drawer -- it continues to stay open.
I tried to get around the opening drawer by booting with the Option key down, install the Tiger Disk, close the drawer, click on the little 3/4 circle and wait for the CD to appear. I waited quite a while and the CD icon never appeared.
Your advice would be appreciated. Thank You.

Sometimes a spurious signal from a USB device will cause this. First disconnect all USB devices except your kbd & mouse. Now does the drawer open on startup?
If so, disconnect your mouse & startup. Now does the drawer open on startup?

  • Disk Utility wont startup

I'm trying to start Disk Utility (under mac os 10.4.8, intel) but it wont startup. It bounces one time in the dock and then dissapers.
I tried a copy of an other computer, but the same problem. I Repaired Permissions in the terminal. I've reset my P ram.
This didn't work at all. Anyone an idea?

    Wow, that's not good.
The first four bytes of a "Universal" Mach-O loadable object and/or executable should be (in hexadecimal representation, which is what the "0x" prefix signifies):
    <pre>0xCAFEBABE</pre>
but instead, it's saying that the first four bytes are:
    <pre>0xCC8B45D0</pre>
In other words, the internal data of the file has been altered or is otherwise incorrect so that it's unusable.
Before doing anything else, I would, if you haven't already done so, startup from your Install DVD/CD and use Disk Utility to make sure your disk directory checks out okay. Use the Verify/Repair Disk buttons to do this. How to repair this problem short of an Archive and Install is a bit tricky.
What exactly did you try copying from another Mac? That could work, but you need to make sure that you only copy it from a Mac of the same architecture: Intel-Mac to an Intel-Mac and PowerPC to a PowerPC Mac. Note that the Disk Utility application itself is most likely fine, there's no need to copy that. What you want to copy is the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/. Copy that "DiskImages.framework" folder from another Intel-based Mac and put it into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ folder on your (damaged) Mac. Replace the existing copy. (You'll need to click the "Authenticate" button to enter your password in order to accomplish this). Then try launching Disk Utility to see if it will launch successfully.
    Hope this helps....
