Disk Utility / Net Restore: "You must authenticate in order to restore".

Hi,
maybe someone can help me: I would like to install an image which was made by Bombichs NetRestore-Helper to an over Netboot bootet Imac. Every time I press the restore-button in the disk utility, I get the same Message: "You must authenticate in order to restore".
I´m sure that I use the right path (afp://Username:Password@ServerIP/Images/MasterImage.dmg). I can mount this directory on every mac in the local network. What can be the reason, why it doesnt work?
Thanks for every hint!

Hi,
Thanks for replying; I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I recall using firewire to connect my iPod to my G4 Powerbook back in '03-'04. Unfortunately, I lost the original cables after two moves (I'm in the military), so I bought the ReTrak cables which included both USB 2.0 and FW. My FW port is fine because I have a 300 GB FW external hard drive attached to my iMac, and it works. What's strange is that before I tried to update it, the iPod worked fine when connected via USB 2.0. Once I tried updating it, the update froze up and my iPod displayed an . As explained in my first post, I've exhausted all efforts to get this thing working again. I appreciate everyone's responses. Fourth, please let me know if you find any fixes.
Thanks, Derek

  • Using Disk Utility to restore an image stored on the network

    Hello --
I have a disk image, Image.dmg. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, Disk utility is able to restore this image from a firewire drive to an internal drive.
Image.dmg is also on a network share, hosted via AFP. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, select "Restore," and specify that share as the source:
    afp://172.28.40.XX/Image_Share/Image.dmg
    I get this message:
"You must authenticate in order to restore."
I imagine that the server would like for me to log on before giving me access to the share. However, Disk Utility doesn't provide me with an authentication dialog.
    Any ideas?

Can't really tell if you are trying to restore an image from a locally attached firewire drive or (as from the original poster of the message) from a remotely shared location. If you are restoring from a remote share location then have you tried:
    afp://username:[email protected]/Image_Share/Image.dmg
Replacing username and password with the account information which has access to that remote share location.
    Good luck,

  • Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation it gives me an input/output error and stops. Any tips?

Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?
Because if the drive is working physically, then there is a host of fixes

  • Using Disk Utility To Restore

Last month I did a Disk Restore onto my large external hard drive using Disk Utility.
I would like to do that monthly, so as to ensure that whenever I add, change, delete data, configurations, etc. on my internal hard drive..that I have the latest restore data..plain and simple.
My question is: In doing subsequent disk restore maneuvers on a monthly basis, do I need to manally delete the previous month's restore data from my external hard drive or will it just overwrite (like copy and replace) the current data on my ext drive?
I don't want the restore feature to duplicate any data from previous transactions on my ext drive. That's why I am asking. Does anyone know?
    Thanks,

Disk Utility->Help->Restoring files from a disk or disk image
You can choose to erase the destination disk and then have the disk image copied to it. Alternatively, you can choose not to erase the disk and add the disk image information to the current contents of the destination disk.
As I read this, if you don't erase the previous copy, when your restore, everything that's on the source will overwrite similarly named items on the destination. You cannot do incremental updates using DU's restroe function. For that, you need something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc.

  • You must authenticate...

I have 2 users on a mac with osx.4 .11 The "sub" acct does not have admin priveleges. When the mac sleeps only on the sub acct it comes up with "you must authenticate to unlock screen, mac osx requires that you type your password" . I checked and haven't set this up to reenter password when waking up...
    thanks

  • YOU MUST AUTHENTICATE TO UNLOCK THE SCREEN

This is actually the same as issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1203732
Occasionally (once or twice a week) when I return to my MacBook, instead of the usual screen saver, followed by the usual login window with my username filled in... just waiting for my password... it is displaying the "Flurry" screen saver (which I have never used), followed by a strange login box with the text:
"YOU MUST AUTHENTICATE TO UNLOCK THE SCREEN. TYPE IN AN ADMINISTRATOR'S NAME AND PASSWORD TO MAKE CHANGES TO MAC OS X."
No mater what one types in there fields, it is impossible to login. The only solution is to power off and login after the reboot. This is REALLY frustrating.
I have a suspicion that this may be some sort of an attack, but there is absolutely no information on the web about it, except the one post mentioned above (which I guess never satisfactorily solved magnettarpit's problem either.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I'm not against conspiracy theories, I have plenty of my own!
But I think this is an occasional flaky RAM thing, (well, a bit flipping, which could be CPU, MB, etc. too), a workaround may be to set up the Screen/Wake from Sleep Pasword with a good name and PW, then turn it off again, thereby hopefully when it THINKS it needs a PW, it can find it.
    Welcome to the Forums btw!

  • Using Disk Utility to restore/copy disk - who is correct?

I had two long talks with two separate Apple Care people online today who both insisted what they were saying was right and the other person was wrong.
    Hmm....
    My question is this.
I have a MBP and the internal HD is currently empty. I've been running off of an external HD for about a year now.
I want to clone my external HD into my internal HD and use the internal HD as my system disk now.
One Apple Care person said to go into Disk Utility, select the source disk, from the tabs on the right hand side select Restore and then drag the source disk into the source field, drag the target disk into the target field and press restore. She said this will make a complete clone of the external HD in the internal HD.
The other Apple Care person said "No no no. You can't do that to clone a system disk that way." He said the best thing was to install a new system and then use the restore as a new system from Time Machine option (where I also have a backup.)
I believe the second method will work, but it's more cumbersome for me because I haven't been backing up everything in Time Machine. I have excluded items, such as podcasts and Parallels disk images.
If I could do this from the external system disk life would be easier.
But is the first Apple Support person right or wrong about this? Can I use Disk Utility to copy the system disk from one external HD to another that way?
    Thanks,
    doug
p.s. I am not in the market for 3rd party software to deal with this one-time issue, so if possible I would like to accomplish this using OS X included features...

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

  • A Disk Utility Image Restore Question

I like to create a bootable partition on my external firewire HD and then restore my bootable utility disks to it, so that I have access to all of them without using the actual disks.
I'm curious if there is a better way of doing it than I am using now. Currently, I use drive genius to make as small a partition as possible (because disk utility seems unable to partition this external HD at all anymore) and then restore the image to that partition, but this always leaves partitions that are much bigger than they need to be.
Is there any way to have disk utility create a partition that is the same size as the image I want to restore from? Putting a 2GB bootable disk on a 2GB partition, or a 600MB disk on a 600MB partition? It just seems silly to have a 600MB disk on a 5GB partition.

then something is wrong with your drive or it has the wrong partition scheme. I would reformat it completely with disk utility. make sure that the partition scheme you use is GUID.
and then restore the image to that partition, but this always leaves partitions that are much bigger than they need to be.

I believe 1 Gb is the smallest partition size you can possibly get with disk utility. If GUI disk Utility won't make a partition small enough you can do it from terminal using diskutil command.
I just tried using diskutil and was able to reduce the size of a partition on one of my drives to 1GB although it did not want to do it in one step. I first had to reduce it to 10GB then to 5GB and then to 1GB.

    man diskutil

  • Disk Utility - Is "Restore" also a backup?

There is a button in Disk Utility:Restore that lets me choose a source volume and destination volume to "Restore" from. I actually use it to back up my entire computer to an external hard drive. Macintosh HD is my source, a partition on my Maxstor HD is my destination. (Note, I have never needed to do the operation in reverse, fortunately).
Is it ok to use it this way? Why does Apple call it "Restore" if you can use it just as well to backup?

Actually, it can be used to clone a drive. So if your startup volume goes haywire, or you installed an update recently:) that is messing with your system you can to it in the reverse and restore the startup from the backup...
Because they have a Backup.app...but you need a .Mac acct and it is a proper name it will restore a drive or partition to whatever the source volume is....
I use it for Disk images to HD a lot....You could actually do it with your install disc to a partition so your install discs won't be lost when traveling or corrupted by poor handling and over use.

  • Disk Utility  to Restore

My Macbook Pro (2011)OS: Lion is not starting up as usual. I have tried resetting the PVRAM option and also safe mode option. But its not making any difference. I would like to restore my files using disk utility. Whenever I select the restore tab, Macintosh HD is greyed out and then when I try to select an image, it opens to the system files, but does not allow me to select any. Also how does one specify the Destination.?
Can anyone provide a detailed solution. I did not use Time machine (really very silly).
But I would like to definitely recover some important files.
    Thanks in advance

Where did you store the image?

  • Can't drag disk icon in Disk Utility to restore backup image

I'm restoring my MacBook from a backup image I made on my external HD with SuperDuper! and I've run into a big problem. I've booted from my OS X CD. I'm in Disk Utility, and while my external drive mounts and I can select the image in the 'restore' pane, I can't for the life of me drag any icon to the 'destination' field. Any help with this?

    Hi
I have exactly the same problem,i backed up my internal HD, and want to restore it by starting my mac mini intel single core with the original delivered os dvd including diskutilities. But no way it is not possible to drag a volume or partition to the required field to the left.I called apple support and the guy did not understand what I'm talking about at all, and told me he will forward to the developer dep.
Never mind, I recovered the mac mini intel with ccc , thanks God I did an image backup and a ccc !
Yesterday my mac mini intel audio hardware has broken, so I have to do another bkp with booted up os dvd to bring in to a serviceprovider.
Tried to recover for security issues , but disk utilitiy did not work again , no drag 'n' drop possible - this problem never exists under powermac before and its driving me mad under intel macs
I did a trick to show thats it is definitely the revision of this os dvd and disk utilities (x86 intel rev.)
I did a clean install form this os dvd, then cloned the interal harddisk to a external firewire disk making it bootable (using ccc for all)
I did no software update just clean from the dvd, restarted , choosed external firewire harddisk, et voila - opened disk utilitiy to restore dmg image for the internal hd and drag 'n' drop works without problems!!
    Resumee:
my delivered os dvd 10.4.5 AHT vesrion 3A102 disc version 1.0 2Z691-5738-A has the biggest bug of all, it can not recover a backed up image at all - that is a revision e.g. release bug (error).
I will have to return this dvd !

  • Problems with Disk Utility backup & restore via DMG disk images

I attempted to backup and restore a 2TB external raid storage device using the recommended Disk Utility procedure for 10.6.6. One of the HDDs in the raid enclosure had started to fail.
First step was to create a new image from the 2TB device. I accepted the defaults of compressed image format and no encryption. The image took about 15 hours to create, and when complete, I was left with 2 files:
    OWC2TB.dmg (1.1TB)
    OWC2TB.002.dmgpart (486GB).
To check the DMG I ran the Disk Utility "Verify Disk" on the DMG, and got the message "The volume OWC2TB appears to be OK". The DMG is described in DU as:
Description: Apple UDIF read-only compressed (zlib)
    Connection Bus: Disk Image
    Total Capacity: 2 TB
    Disk Write Status: Read Only
Partition Map Scheme: No partition map
I then replaced the failing HDD in the enclosure, recreated a new 2TB filesystem on the device, and attempted to restore from the DMG image.
The first attempt was to use Disk Utility "Restore" function. I specified the DMG as the source and the new device as the destination, and chose "Erase Destination". This failed immediately with the error "Restore failure. Could not find any scan information. The source images needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored".
After researching this error I tried to correct it by selecting the DMG in Disk Utility and running Images => Scan Image for Restore. This failed immediately, complaining there was insufficient disk space. More research revealed it needed the same amount of spare space on the same disk to do an imagescan. So I had to free up an EXTRA 1.5TB of space in addition to the space the DMG consumed. Not very user friendly.
The next attempt to imagescan the DMG got further than the "insufficient space" error. It displayed "Scanning image OWC2TB.dmg, Block Checksum Partition #1". This ran for about 10 hours. At the end, it displayed a new error message "Unable to scan OWC2TB.dmg (internal error)".
Next I tried to mount the DMG and copy the files manually. My first attempt at this resulted in a "Verifying..." phase which looked like it will take about 10 hours, so I clicked "Skip". Soon after I got an error message "Unable to attach OWC2TB.dmg (no mountable file systems).". Now I am trying a mount with the Verify option...
Can anyone suggest what I can try next to restore the DMG?
I think the problem might be the fact the DMG is split in two parts, but the imagescan/restore software does not know how to read the second part? Is there a way to join these into a single DMG?

Here's how you can potentially use your AirDisk with TimeMachine (beware that YMMV), but it should work as it works with every other "unsupported" device.
    1) Mount your AirDisk so it appears on your Mac
    2) Open Terminal.app
    3) change directories to the AirDisk's root folder located in "/Volumes"
    ie: cd "/Volumes/AirDisk Name"
    4) execute this command to "bless" the drive to be used with time machine:
    touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported
    5) Start TimeMachine and if all went well, it should recognize your AirDisk drive and use it for TM.
This should also work on NFS shares, SMB shares, AFP shares, basically anything. It has worked up until the last developer seed, so unless they yanked this at the last minute, it should still work.
Now, the reason why Apple removed this feature may be due to the unreliability of the AirDisk, so be cautious.

  • Disk Utility repair failure: You need to restart your computer. Hold down...

While trying to backup my macbook pro (running 10.5.8 leopard). I kept getting the gray window that forced me to shut down my computer. After some research, I conluded that I needed to check my HDD for damage. I ran the Verify Disk option (Repair Disk option was not yet "clickable"), and it says
    First Aid Failed
stopped verifying HD because the following error occured:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
In the text box below that, it says
"(It should be 771886 instead of 771889)
    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 148275 instead of 148272)
The volume Macintosh HD needes to be repaired.
ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
I then tried the Repair Disk Permissions option and it came up with three difference
    Library/application support/proapps
    System/Library/privateframeworks/browserkit.framework
    System/Library/privateframeworks/prokit.framework
(I can give more information on these three if that would help at al)
In the Verify Disk error, it says that it needs to be repaired, but the repair disk option is still not clickable. I don't know what to do from here. Is there someone more tech savvy than I who can help?

You cannot do rewpairs from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782?viewlocale=en_US
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

    Hi guys,
If someone could try and shed some light on my problem, I'm trying to restore my external 20Gb HD to a disk image i have but the problem is, after entering my password, i get the message,
'Restore Failure, you must authenticate in order to restore'
Could someone tell me what the problem may be and if there is a way around it or another piece of software I can use?
    Thanks

    Hi Danny,
I Googled the message you received and found nothing except a person who had the same thing happen, but received no answer............
I managed to pop the new drive in and it's working as it should - I think. Now I need help with restoring via disk utitlity. When I load my backed up HD.dmg as source and chose the new HD as destination - when I hit "restore" I get a "Restore failure - You must authenticate in order to restore." message. I can't find any info on what "authenticate" means and am at this point ready to give up, put the old HD back into the laptop and... well, I guess just run it 'til it crashes. But I'd rather not, of course. Anyone know what I need to do to get this to work?
