Disk utility network hdd

Anyone know if its possible to use Disk Utility to examine a External HDD connected to TC by ethernet (or USB).
One of the volumes in the external HDD suddenly does not show up in the finder anymore. might be overful?
I have the external HDD connected to TC by ethernet. I can see the external HDD in the finder windows, but not when using Disk Utility.
Maybe I should reconnect it to the Macbook directly using USB?
oh.one point. i think the external HDD is formated for windows... this doesnt help i assume?
tx

And yet DU-PREFERENCES allows the option of "checksum remote drives", the help-tip for which says it sees networked drives.  Tried it while trying to Dx a Time Machine crawl-speed issue - takes a while to show, but the sparsebundle & Time Machine Backups image do respond to "verify".  /Schooner

  • Airport+ disk utility + external hdd = headache

I went out and bought a new 1TB HDD. When I hook it up to my airport extreme I could not see the drive in disk utilities to format and partition the drive, I am allocating 300gig to time machine and the remaining will be filled with my music and movies. I then plugged the HDD direct into my USB port on the Imac and it saw it not problems, I could partition the drive, it auto mounted etc. After I partitioned the drives I then placed it back onto the airport and can mount the drives on the desktop, i can see them in the airport utility however I open time machine and it can not see the drive, I open disk utility and it can not see the drive. If I take it out plug it direct to the computer everything works fine. Please help I have spent 4 days on google and if i google one more topic I think I will strap C4 to my airport and say good bye, please help

I just set this up yesterday - Macbook 10.5.6 using a disk on an Airport extreme n. To speed things up I set mine up using wired Ethernet. Time Machine will not recognize your disk and is not supported by Apple. There is an Apple Support document stating this. But this works fine. From what I have read, 10.5.6 seems to have wiped out most peoples previous setup.
    Here is what I did.
Attached the USB drive to the MB, formatted the disk Mac OSE Journaled
Attached the drive to the Airport, Set user and permissions
    In Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
    Open Disk Utility
    File/New/Blank Disk Image
    Volume Name U Name It
Volume Size Use the drop down and create your own custom size
Volume Format Mac OS E Journaled
    Encryption i used 128
    Partitions Apple Partition Map
Image Format sparse bundle disk image
Choose your AE disk location. Click Create. Enter and verify a password and click OK
Open Time Machine, choose backup disk and navigate to the sparse bundle image you created above, the image will mount on your desktop and the back up will start. Obviously it will take a while. When your done with the big one, you can then use wireless. It will work the same.
Basically you are creating a sparse bundle image on the remote disk and telling TM to recognize it. This is the format TM uses on the Network. I searched for days to get this to work wired and wireless.

  • HELP!!! Disk Utility, Network Utility and other apps gone!!!

I had an admin account with these on its desktop. Monitor, Disk Utilty, Network Utility, OnyX, etc (mostly maintenence tools). I had to erase the admin account and now I can't find them anywhere! I tried reinstalling OSX bundled software only, it installed fine and I still can find these utilites... have I erased them permanently?
Am I gonna have to do a complete OS X reinstall?

Activity Monitor not Utility Monitor. I found out the last app! I knew I did this for a reason:

Thanks alot guys I really appreciate all the help! All is well!

  • External HDD & Disk Utility/Terminal

I wanted to be able to read/write to my Woxter external HDD which is an NFTS partition. so I tried using MacFuse. I followed these steps:
    # Install the packages, MacFUSE Core first, then install NTFS3g.
    # Plug in your external HD (if you have one)
    # Open Disk Utility
    # Click the partition you want to mount with read/write capabilities and unmount it if it is mounted by clicking the button up top.
    # Click info up top and look for Disk Identifier. Mine was "disk1s1"
    # Open the Terminal
    # Enter the following (copy and paste) “sudo ln -s /System/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/mount_fusefs /usr/bin/mount_fusefs”
The ln utility creates a new directory entry (linked file) which has the same modes as the original file. (man)
    # Enter “mkdir /Volumes/ExternalWoxter” This creates the directory where you can find your files.
    # Enter “sudo /usr/local/bin/ntfs-3g /dev/disk1s1 /Volumes/”ExternalWoxter” -o ping_diskarb,volnameforce=”ExternalWoxter””
I´m trying to back up files from my Mac to my Woxter, disk utility tells me that I have read/write access, but I get a message saying I have insufficient privileges to be able to complete the operation - so I can´t back up the files.
Also - my woxter external HD no longer auto-mounts when I start up the mac.
And its icon has changed from the old one to a new icon, the same as the one for Network (you can see an example of this icon in the preferences menu).
Also - when I click on Macintosh HD - I have one icon for the woxter drive for EVERY TIME I have mounted the drive... it doesn´t disappear when I "eject" the drive.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? please?
    Mac-Ignoramus.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    sudo rm -i /V*/*/.DS_Store
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You may be prompted to remove one or more files named exactly ".DS_Store" (without the quotes.) Press the Y key and then return to confirm. Press the N key and then return if you get any other response, or just close the Terminal window.
Try again to open the volume window.

  • Time capsule not working - fixing hdd with disk utility

My time capsule stopped backing up today.  It couldn't connect to the airport disk.  So I opened up the Time Capsule and connected the HDD to my laptop hoping that running disk utility would find some simple error and fix it.  After running the verify disk utility gave me the following message -
At this point I'm definitely beyond my knowledge of what to do ... should I create an EFI partition?  But, it says its for boot disks and RAIDs, neither of which applies to the Time Capsule/Airport Disk ... I think.
Any hardware guys out there that can advise me what are my next steps?  Please write with the assumption I'm new to Apples and computers in general.
    DCRican

should I create an EFI partition?
No, it will lead to errors in the Time Capsule if you modify its disk in any way.. do not touch the disk.. This is not an error btw.. which you did realise.. the disk is not mean't to have EFI because the TC boots from Flash not EFI.
I am a bit surprised your immediate reaction to a failure to link to the TC you assumed disk errors and then went to this extraordinary method to test it.
We do recommend a disk pull as a last resort to recover files.. or the disk is dead.. not this error.
My time capsule stopped backing up today.  It couldn't connect to the airport disk.
I think you mean Time Machine. (backup software on your computer.. not related to Time Capsule other than as a target for the backup).
This is a software problem in the computer and has nothing to do with the Time Capsule.. (hardware)
It looks like you're on Yosemite.. poor blighter.. !!
It is about Apple's worst release at least for network.. just read the discussions .. many many people have issues...
When you hit a problem like this.. first google.. then ask on the discussion forum.. please don't start pulling your hardware apart.
There is no real known fix yet..
There are things to try.. but nothing so far is proving infallible which means we haven't really hit the main cause..
Start with a full factory reset.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Then in airport utility setup the TC with short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric names (and passwords but 8-20 characters).
Good names.. TCgen4 name of the TC. TCwifi as wireless name.
If you then have issues.. please first of all make sure you can mount the TC disk in finder.. ie click TCgen4 in the left pane of finder and the disk appears on the right. Access the disk.
If that fails.. post again and we can go the next step.

  • Greetings world.I have created a dmg. of my entire iomega ext HDD via disk utility using a mac book pro. It is currently sitting on the desktop. I have erased the iomega and now I can not understand how to put the dmg back.

It is safe to say that i need help..................
let me start at the beginning.
I have 1 2008 imac. always a pleasure never been a problem. Attached to it i have an iomega 500gb ext drive. also been ok.
    until now!!
The HDD would not mount. Disk utility suggested that it was ok so i tested the imac HD. I got error code 4MOT/2/40000004: HDD- 1502. This doesnt worry me at the moment.
I attached iomega to my Mac book pro and again it would not mount. The disk utility did tell me that the iomega needed repair. it advised that i should wipe it and restore.
So I used the MB Pro disk utility to create a DMG. and saved it to the desk top. I then erased the iomega. did a repair and it all seemed ok. So then i try to do a restore.
After a very long time it said internal error with the dmg. using disk utility i did a convert dmg (compressed) and saved it to the iomega. middle of the night job!!
got up this morning and indeed it had sent the DMG to the iomega. But i could not open it. The iomega itself seemed dandy asking me if i wanted to use it as a time machine etc and it mounted ok and i saved a small jpeg to the iomega as well. I then thought that maybe when i did the convert as a compressed file i made a mistake. i'm guessing it should be a read and write so i started all over again.......... wiped iomega (which was quite quick) then tried the convert tool again.....it trys for a while then says there is not enough disk space...........I'm not sure which disk it is refering to.??
I have purchased a 1tb hard drive today incase the iomega is some how full up.
So really my question to the world is .........Help?

well no reply from the community. sniff- do i stink!? - probably a little bit. If i have lost all that data then I'm gonna really really pong.
Any ways i have purchased a 1tb usb HDD and have managed to duplicate the dmg file onto it. however still unable to mount the **** thing. so now i have ordered disk warrior which will be in my possession tomorrow.
    fingers toes eyes crossed.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • I have problem to read my HDD, but it appears on Disk utility how can I fix it Please?

Hello, How are you and thanks for your time to review my question. it's been like 8 months my Macbook pro stop reading my 1TB HDD but I have noticed that I can read Flash Drive. whenever I connect the HDD to the computer and I Check on Disk utility it appears but not on my desktop. I have connected the HDD on several computers and it's working perfectly. Please help me solve this issue.

Sorry I didn't notice that the pictures weren't inserted
I did click on mount and I have this message I'm going to run first aid and see if it would work
Yeah it has been eight months. the problem is that i had an HDD before that one it stops working because of a fall and obviously that one didn't work on my computer and neither on others so I bought a new onethat has no defect since it works perfectly on other computers Mac and PC but doesn't show up on mind I can't access my files like I told you previously and the funny fact for me is that DU can see i have a disk connected.
PS: i did run first aid ----> verify disk---> Repair----> and try to mount again-----> but same mount failed result
Sig Really appreciate your attention to my case, hopefully there's a solution.

  • Unable to find HDD after erase with disk utility

Background id I had installed the Lion OS but then got into trouble with the "flashing question mark " at start up.
After using the recovery option, Lion OS was reinstalled and things were fine for a couple of days. Then the "flashing ?" returned
This time, it appeared the "Cmd R" did not work. So I browsed until I found out it is possible in the reinstallation, the recovery option was removed.
Ok, so then one of the discussion threads suggested to use the installer disc to boot up, use the disk utility to erase the HDD and install in my case Snow Leopard, and thereafter install the Lion OS.
I am stuck after clicking "erase". First there was an error message - "file system formatter failed' then I no longer can see the HDD in the disk utility.
How can complete the HDD erase function so I can proceed to install the OS?

A check in the system profiler - "There was an error while scanning for Serial ATA devices"
Looks like my iMac's HDD is kaput...Or is there a way to fix this?

I used a partitioned HDD for time machine, using a partition already containing other data files. I am now no longer able to view that partition in Finder. Disk Utility shows it in grey and "not mounted". Any suggestions of how to access the files? Does using time machine mean that that partition is no longer able to be used as it used to be?
HDD is a Toshiba 1TB, partitioned into two 500GB partitions.
    OS X version 10.9.2

Yes, sharing a TM disk is a bad idea, and disks are cheap enough so that you don't need to.
    Now
Have you tried to repair the disk yet

  • External HDD is seen as drive but no as volume in Disk Utility (unmountable

I've unplugged my external HDD without unmounting it and tried to hook it up via eSata to my MBP.
Now Leopard won't see the Drive neither via USB neither via eSATA (i use expresscard/34).
The drive is seen as USB device in Disk Utility, but not as Volume.
The Dtive is formatted and partitioned for OSX. Has data on it.
What can I do to make the drive appear again?
Resetting PRAM and SMC didn't help.

of course you should be aware that to run esata external drive is not hot swappable. user must power on before Mac and power off after Mac.
even though you did the smc reset did you in fact disconnect all devices, and that means the externals to the point of powering them down and removing the connecting cables from all devices.

  • External HDD (Internal) Not Showing Up In Finder, But It Is Showing Up In Disk Utility

Before I start, I know that this question has technically been solved before, but not exactly in my case. Keep in mind that I'm a graphic designer, this is why I am so passionate about fixing this issue. So, here's the story. Yesterday, I sold my Mac mini (Late 2009). I had plans of buying the new MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display (15 inch), and that worked out perfectly. I bought the MacBook and sold my Mac mini. Prior to selling the Mac mini, I decided to format an old hard drive that I had, which was a 160GB hard drive. My plan was to sell the computer with the 160GB HDD, and keep my 750GB HDD. I know my fair share of computing and repair, so I replaced the hard drive myself, and reinstalled Mac OS X ML on the 160GB HDD. I installed the OS via external SATA to USB connection, and it booted up perfectly through that connection to my Mac mini. Then, when I took out the 160GB HDD, my computer booted to my priority internal drive, which was the 750 GB HDD, that I'm having problems with currently. It booted up perfectly, and all of my information was on it. So, at that point, seeing that everything was flawless, I extracted the 750GB HDD, from inside the computer and replaced it with the 160GB HDD, which I formatted, reinstalled ML on, and was planning on selling it with. The 160GB HDD booted perfectly and everything was working on the Mac mini, but then, I plugged in my 750GB HDD via USB connection, to see if my files and everything was still there, I got a message saying, "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" and it gave me three options underneath, which were: "Initialize...", "Ignore" and "Eject". I pressed on initialize, and tried to do everything that I possibly could, without formatting it, and all of the options like "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were "grayed out", if you know what I mean. I tried plugging it into all 5 USB ports, but I got the same message. It was recognized in Disk Utility, but not in Finder. So, I sold the computer with the 160GB HDD that was working fine, but now I had another dilemma which was why my 750GB HDD, isn't showing up in Finder. I can hear the HDD spinning when I plug it in via USB. This Hard Drive has run Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion on it, I've never installed Windows on it. So, it was properly formatted for a Mac. Now, I went out and bought the MacBook Pro with Retina Display that I needed, and I tried doing the same thing, which was plugging it in via USB, and seeing if Finder would pick it up. Still, nothing. I ended up with the same message. Here are some reference screenshots, of what I'm getting exactly.
I've called Western Digital, and they told me to try booting up the 750GB HDD, in an older Macbook Pro, to see if it will boot, and recovery all of the files from there. The problem is, I don't know anybody with an older MBP. I called Best Buy and they said that they could take a look at it, but I would truly prefer by fixing this on my own, without having to pay them. That would be my LAST resort. I'm aware that I can't boot up the 750GB HDD in my new MBP w/ Retina because it can only carry SSD. So, I'm basically puzzled. If anybody could help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated. Like I said before, I'm a graphic designer, and I'm in desperate need of the files that were on my 750GB HDD. Thanks.

I describe how you fix it here

  • Disk Utility Failing to Repair External HDD

I was in the midst of running a Time Machine backup from my MBA (2012, running Mavericks) to an external HDD when I moved the laptop and managed to knock the cord out of the HDD, causing it to disconnect abruptly (the drive pulled away from the plug and hit the floor). Since then, I have been unable to to access the HDD at all, although the drive itself seems to be working, insofar as the light still comes on and the disc is spinning.
The HDD isn't visible in Finder. I can sporadically see it in Disk Utility - sometimes I plug it in and see nothing, sometimes it appears in Disk Utility after an extended period of time. It won't mount through Disk Utility, however I have managed to eject it a few times.
I have tried both verifying and repairing the HDD when it is visible; all attempts have ended in an error stating that I needed to backup the files and restore the drive. I've tried a number of tools to clone the drive, including Disk Utility itself, Carbon Cloner and a few others, but all have resulted in errors.
Is there any way I can salvage the data on the HDD? There are a few files on there I really don't want to lose...

Remove the drive mechanism from the enclosure and install it in another one.

  • Using Disk Utility to restore an image stored on the network

    Hello --
I have a disk image, Image.dmg. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, Disk utility is able to restore this image from a firewire drive to an internal drive.
Image.dmg is also on a network share, hosted via AFP. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, select "Restore," and specify that share as the source:
    afp://172.28.40.XX/Image_Share/Image.dmg
    I get this message:
"You must authenticate in order to restore."
I imagine that the server would like for me to log on before giving me access to the share. However, Disk Utility doesn't provide me with an authentication dialog.
    Any ideas?

Can't really tell if you are trying to restore an image from a locally attached firewire drive or (as from the original poster of the message) from a remotely shared location. If you are restoring from a remote share location then have you tried:
    afp://username:[email protected]/Image_Share/Image.dmg
Replacing username and password with the account information which has access to that remote share location.
    Good luck,
    TK

  • HT203176 i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities and said I need to repair disk from a cd. did that, I got volume repaired from the external disk. when I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original
    MEssage.
