Disk Utility Not Letting Me Resize Partition

Hi people,
I had used boot camp to install Ubuntu as dual boot but it wasn't working properly so I decided to delete the partition that Ubuntu was on. This worked fine.
However when I tried to resize my Macintosh HD to its original size I get the error message:
Partition failed with the error:
MediaKit reports no such partition.
Also there is a partition called "Linux Swap" that I can't erase or reformat.
Any suggestions?

That definitely has to do with the encryption on the disk. Thats what that message CoreStorage Physical volume is referring to.
Sorry I don;t have a solution, if you google for that CoreStorage message you'll get some ideas. One thing I can tell you make sure you have this disk backed up if you start messing around with this. The chances of messing up is sort of high.

IMac disk utility not reading any FAT32/NTFS related partitions/CD/flash drives

Hi everyone!
I'm trying to access my drives and later on install bootcamp and windows on my iMac. At moment I can only start the iMac in safe mode (long story, if interested check out iMac 27" (late 2009), freezing - List of solutions tried). Any steps taken so far to read and format other drives has been in Safe Mode.
Problems:
- any formats except Mac OS X extended gets greyed out in Disk Utility.
- Not able to read/mount flash drives, external drives or CD's with any other formats.
Solutions tried:
- Tried to format using OSX on current iMac, MBP and PC and no change or luck.
- Tried on other machines and it works great. So it's related to my iMac.
- Disk Utility try to Mount drive/partition - getting error "The disk "BOOTCAMP" could not be mounted"
- Installed Paragon NTFS but no difference.
- Disk Utility no disk error reported
Searched on internet and forums for a solution w/o any luck. Haven't found anyone with similar problems or I'm using wrong keywords. Haven't found any Knowledge Base about other formats is disabled in Safe Mode state so it can't be that either. Below is a picture that shows any other partitions than mac is greyed out.
Any suggestions or anyone encounter with this wierd behavior?

Disk Utility: MediaKit reports no such partition

What is up with my disk?
On my brand new mac mini, I played around with resizing partitions in Disk Utility, it worked fine, and I eventually returned it to the original single-partition state.
Then, I ran boot camp, and told it to create a 10 GB partition.
Then, I installed Linux (64-bit Ubuntu) -- from the Linux installer I deleted the windows partition, and a zero-size partition before it, and put Linux swap and ext3 partitions in that space.
Now, from the mac side, if I try to shrink the boot partition again, I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition".
Help? One potentially related anomaly is that Disk Utility shows my Linux ext3 partition format as "MS-DOS (FAT)" but the "fdisk" command correctly lists it as "Linux files*"
Another disturbing thing is that if I type "sudo pdisk" on the Macintosh command line, and give the 'L' command to list partitions on all disks, pdisk exits with the error "Floating point exception"

It doesn't sound like you've actually tried reformatting the entire drive, just resizing partitions. There is absolutely no reason why mountability should enter into the picture at all since you can't format a drive if any volumes are mounted.

Disk utility crash whilst creating new partition - OSX 10.8.2

Hi all,
On my MBA I tried to partition the hard disk - creating two equally sized ones from the existing 112GB.
Only 40GB are used at the moment. First Disk Utility only let me create a new one with 50 GB, but I went ahead anyway (constantly complaining that the target disk is too small....)
Disk Utility crashed in the middle of resizing and now I have a big mess - looks like it worked in resizing the primary but I can't access the 'new' half.
This is the diskutil list output:

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

Disk utility can't repair a partition on external hard drive

I have a 1TB Western Digital external FW drive that's only a couple years old (2 or 3, probably). I have it split into partitions, one of which I'm using for Time Machine. The non-Time Machine partition checked out fine with DIsk Utility, but when I ran Disk Utility on the Time Machine partition, I received this message:
Disk Utility stopped reparing "Time Machine." Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Does this mean the drive itself is failing? I erased the Time Machine partition and recreated it through Disk Utility, and then I verified it. Everything checked out okay, but I want to make sure, especially since I'm hosting my iTunes music in the other partition (it's backed up to a 2nd external drive, so if the drive does die, at least I don't lose everything).
Before this problem happened, both partitions dropped off the Finder and the light on the drive went off. I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in again a couple times, but nothing happened. Finally, the light went back on after plugging it back in for the 3rd or 4th time, but I'm wondering if the drive could be going bad, which would surprise me since it isn't very old.

Possibly, but not necessarily. The File System on the disk was so badly corrupted that Disk Utility couldn't fix it. That might indicate a problem with the drive. It's not unusual for consumer-quality (ie, inexpensive) drives to fail after 2-3 years, although many will run for several years. It's a bit of a crapshoot.

Whatever caused that is another good possibility -- if a drive is improperly disconnected, OSX can't "close it out" properly, and that can cause damage to the file system. Sometimes Disk Utility can fix it, sometimes it can't. And sometimes heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair apps like DiskWarrior can fix things Disk Utility can't.
A power dip or spike could have caused it, or an overheated electronic component, etc. If it has it's own power supply, be sure it's on a good (ie, not cheap) surge protector or U.P.S. system.
Otherwise, keep an eye on it. If you don't have "secondary" backups, this would be an excellent time to get another drive for that purpose. See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.
Bottom line: personally, I'd not trust my only backups to that drive.
(But then, I'd never trust my backups to any single drive, no matter how new or high-quality.)

Copy to disk utility not working right

My disk utility not work like it used to, it does not show up a disk when I put it in the drive. And I can't copy to disk anymore. A blank disk shows up as a removeable drive instead of a blank disk on the disk utility...??? I need to fix this so I can back-up my files and free up some space, help please?

The last time I saw a similar problem to yours, he was also running Panther. I advised reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo update, and his woes were gone.

Another thought is to check System Preferences/CD's & DVD'S, and check your selection nuder "When you insert a blank CD" (or DVD).
Running Disk Utility from the install disk, and repairing permissions is also another possible fix.

Been scouring the webs and can't quite figure this one out.
I just purchased a Seagate 3TB drive intending on using it for Backup.
Ended up plugging it into a dock and couldn't get it to show up in Disk Utility..
Interesting enough, I plugged this into an HP laptop and it displays just fine.
Anyone know the solution?

I hooked my internal as an external up to my Mom's Macbook Pro and it recognized my HD. I'm thinking it is something internal with the hook-up, which is awesome, because maybe I can actually fix it!!!! Any thoughts?

Can I use the Leopard Disk Utility to repair a Tiger partition?

I have a multi-partition external disk, one partition has Tiger installed on it, while others have Leopard. (I used Leopard to partition the drive and then used SuperDuper! to copy my earlier Tiger backup from another disk to this disk.) Now I find I have errors on the partition with Tiger. Can I use the Disk Utility tool from my Leopard install to repair the Tiger partition? Earlier today I tried to boot from my Tiger install DVD and use the Disk Utility there to repair the partition, but it just hangs up and won't go forward.

You could use it, but if Tiger's Disk Utility couldn't fix it, it's doubtful Leopard's would fix it as well. You're better off using Disk Warrior from Alsoft.com.

This particular drive has two partitions on it currently, one of which is a DOSFAT_16_SHidden. I have been trying to play around and get this thing to format for a few days now on Linux, windows and my Mac. Should I just give up on it or what?

Master Boot Record. Do this:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

OS X Lion won't let me resize partitions

I've install OS X Lion a different partition successfully. After realizing that I loved Lion I wanted to downsize my Snow Leopard partition I succesfully do that but now it won't let me expand my Lion partition!
HELP!!!! PLEASE!!!!

I had the same problem too. I had upgraded Snow Leopard to Lion, but then found out some of my apps would not run in Lion. So i created another partition and installed Snow Leopard on it so I could dual boot between Lion and Snow Leopard. The problem was that I didn't leave enough room on my Lion partition to work with some video editing I was doing. So I tried to enlarge my Lion partition and reduce my Snow Leopar partition but had no success.
I thought that if I deleted my Snow Leopard partition that I would be able to resize my Lion partition to use the entire drive. That didn't work.
So I tried to boot from the Lion Recovery Partition, but when I tried to apply the changes of resizing my Lion partition it would fail withe a message that it couldn't unmount the drive.
But here is what I did that FINALLY worked (and this was while booted into my normal Lion partition):
Enter the following command into Terminal
defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
Open Disk Utility
Now there is a DEBUG menu at the top. Go DEBUG and select SHOW EVERY PARTITION
Now you will see the RECOVERY HD partition under your LION partition.
Select the RECOVERY HD partition and click MOUNT at the top
Now you can expand your LION partition
My guess is that since Disk Utility couldn't see the hidden recovery partition and since that partition is physically AFTER the Lion partition it could not resize. But by mounting the hidden Recover Partition, then Disk Utility was able to move the Recovery Partition and expand the Lion partition.
Now I just need to create a partian to reinstall snow leopard into ( I will make it smaller this time so I have more room on my Lion partition).

Time Capsule hangs at end of full backup, Disk Utility "not responding"

I'm running a Mid 2011 iMac 27" with OSX 10.8.4 and using a WiFi connected 3TB Time Capsule (4th Gen).
I've noticed that the Time Capsule seems to get stuck at the end of a full back-up (let's say 260 GB of 260 GB) and won't end, even after hours of being left alone.
When I mount the Time Capsule Sparse Disk Image Bundle and then try to run Disk Utility, Disk Utility is shown as "Gathering Information," but the Finder and Activity Monitor list Disk Utility as "not responding." (No disk information is shown in Disk Utility.) This happens both when I connect via WiFi to the Time Capsule and when I connect directly using an Ethernet cable. If I don't mount the Sparse Disk Image Bundle, Disk Utility works fine, immediately showing my iMac's Hard Drive, so it only happens when the Time Capsule Sparse Disk Image Bundle is mounted.
1. Is Disk Utility truly "not responding" or is it just taking forever to load because of the 3TB hard drive?
2. If it truly isn't responding, what can I do to see if the TC needs to be "repaired"?
3. What's going on with my TC that it hangs up at the end of a full backup?

Something went wrong with or on the TM drive (Time Capsule in your case), such as a power failure or abnormal disconnection, where OSX was unable to "close it out" properly, so is unsure if all the changes are in the File System Event Store. If you're not familiar with the Event Store, see the blue box in How Time Machine works its Magic for details (it's talking about the one on your internal HD, but OSX keeps one on every drive/partition and disk image, including your TC backups.)

That's one of the causes of a deep traversal. The UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier, the long string of numbers and letters) for the Event Store on your internal HD doesn't match the one in TM's records from the previous backup, so it must do a deep traversal instead, comparing everything on your Mac to the latest (completed) backup.

Trouble talking to a disk. The first two probably involve the TC, the third one definitely does -- it's trying to create the new Event Store.

TM did (finally) connect, figured out how much sp it needed, and started deleting old backups to make room. Since it did, actual copying would have started just after that was sent.

Most of that is also out of my area, but doesn't seem related to the TC or backups.
Hard to tell so far, but it looks like problem is on your network, or power, or with the TC. Trying backups to a directly-connected external HD would be a quick way to confirm that, and especially if these are your only backups, a wise thing to do anyhow.
It's always prudent to keep "secondary" backups, more so if your main ones are on a network, and especially if there's the slightest doubt about them. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for more info and some suggestions.
And/or, start through the list in the green box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Disk Utility doesn't erase a partition...

I know, there are many topics about partitioning and BootCamp, but none could help me so far...
I just tried to install Windows 7 on my iMac...I got the black screen, now I found the solution on the AppleSupport page, but that's not the point.
Since I couldn't use the Windows Partition, I tried to erase it with BootCamp. It said that after the repartitioning, the size my Macintosh HD would have been 465 GB (it was 500 at the beginning) so it was deleting Windows, but not resizing the partition.
So I tried to initialize with Disk Utility, and I ended up with a partition initialized in HFS+, but that I cannot edit.
I'd like to erase it and get free space, in order to expand my Mac OS X partition, but for some reason I can't.
I even downloaded the Demo of Drive Genius, and it says that that partition is "read only" so it cannnot erase it.
How can I get my 40GB back??

You blew whatever chance you had.
And no, using Boot Camp Assistant, which is correct way to remove it, does not "return" all the space in every case. Some is "lost."
Using DU though your only choice is to delete the volume you created and go from there, and try to extend.
But never work without a safety net, a backup or two.
You don't need DG3. It is good to have Disk Warrior. But your issue is with the partition tables, and not a file system error. iPartition might. But in reality, SuperDuper is your best bet: clone your system and reformat your drive (booted from your clone) and do a restore.
Try again with Disk Utility to remove the space.

Disk Utility unable to format or partition external HD

Last weekend I bought Leopard and prepared everything in my iMac (PowerPC G5, 2.0 GHz) to install it. One of the things I tried was to repartition an external USB hard drive (Iomega 120 GB P/N: DHD120-C) for use with Time Machine. This drive was already formatted with HFS+ but I noticed that was using MBR, and I understand that for use with Time Machine you have to connect a disk using Apple Partition Scheme. Well, I used Disk Utility (still on Mac OS X 10.4.10), selected Partition, Options, Apple Partition Scheme instead of Master Boot Record and tried to apply changes to the drive. Disk Utility froze, I left it for more than one hour until I had to force quit it.
When my iMac rebooted an screen appeared saying that I had a drive not recognized and gave me the option to initialize it. A second failed attempt, Disk Utility froze again.
Finally, I decided to move to Leopard and try to fix the problem later. Everything went fine and while I was waiting I used a Windows machine to partition my external USB disk drive (used DISKPART to create a primary partition) and formatted it with NTFS because Windows told me that the drive was too large to use FAT32. In Leopard, I connected the drive, it mounted OK and used disk utility again to try to repartition it using Apple Partition Scheme and Mac OS Plus (which I understand is the same than HFS+). Disk Utility froze again, more than a couple of hours later I had to force quit it and now I'm using MacDrive in a Windows computer to format the drive, after creating again a primary partition using DISKPART, it seems to work without issues, formatted it using HFS+ in less than a minute. For me, the drive is working fine.
I'll test it with my Leopard iMac later, I'm sure it will mount OK but I'm also pretty sure that it will be recognized as Master Boot Record, which most certainly will give me problems if I try to use it with Time Machine (or not?). Can anybody please explain me what's happening between my iMac and the external hard drive?

As expected, the disk formatted with MacDrive was recognized OK by my iMac. As soon as I connected it Time Machine offered to use it, I accepted and my first backup completed some time last night (I left it working and went to sleep).
Any ideas about what could be happening with the hard drive?

'No' symbol on start-up, disk utility not recognizing internal drive

Need a little assistance.
Two days ago I was using the Macbook and it froze. Restarted and I was hit with the international no symbol. I've also gotten the blinking file folder at times when I've tried the holding down of various buttons on start-up.
I put a Hitachi 750 gb harddrive in last fall, it has been working fine up until now.
I do not have the system disk for Snow Leopard on hand, so until I can get it from my Dad, I decided to check on the system disk I actually have from the laptop purchase in 2007.
This allowed me to get to the start-up disk and disk utility area. I could not find my external harddrive in the list for a start-up, and it is the back-up using Time Machine. I also could not get the internal harddrive to be found in the utility so I could do a repair. It did seem to recognize that there is a drive, but not the actual named portion of it that contains the info.
I removed the internal and put it in an external case: my netbook recognizes that there is hardware, but does not let me access it. I attribute this to the fact that the drive is formatted for Mac and the Windows machine can't recognize the data.
My next step was to see if my old iMac would recognize the internal as an external, but since I don't know where the keyboard is and it is running an early version of OS X, figured it won't do me much good.
What is my next step? Will the Snow Leopard disk make a difference? Or is the reaction with the older system disk going to carry on the same way with Snow Leopard?
I was going to buy a Macbook Pro, but not for over another month, so I'm hoping I can figure something out with this and make it last a little longer.

I hooked my internal as an external up to my Mom's Macbook Pro and it recognized my HD. I'm thinking it is something internal with the hook-up, which is awesome, because maybe I can actually fix it!!!! Any thoughts?

Ipod Classic Re-Formatted In Disk Utility Not Being Recognized

I last posted about this question 4 months ago on this forum and still havent received an answer that works. My Silver Ipod Classic 80GB was used to update the OS on my computer. Foolishly I partitioned the disk on it using disk utility and updated my computer. After i tried to erase the partition the ipod stopped being recognized as an ipod on my mac running OSX. It is recognized as a hard drive. I formatted it with Mac OSX extended Journaled in disk utility and nothing seems to work. When i plug it in itunes auto starts and pops up but the Ipod simply doesnt show up in the side bar. I have tried it on all different macs and windows computers and it still wont be recgonized on the mac. On the windows machine i am able to reformatt it so it works with a PC but when i plug it into a mac itunes autostarts and it still isnt recognized as an ipod
help would be greatly appreciated
