This particular drive has two partitions on it currently, one of which is a DOSFAT_16_SHidden. I have been trying to play around and get this thing to format for a few days now on Linux, windows and my Mac. Should I just give up on it or what?

Master Boot Record. Do this:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

OS X Disk Utility not recognizing Seagate 3TB drive in dock
Been scouring the webs and can't quite figure this one out.
I just purchased a Seagate 3TB drive intending on using it for Backup.
Ended up plugging it into a dock and couldn't get it to show up in Disk Utility..
Interesting enough, I plugged this into an HP laptop and it displays just fine.
    Anyone know the solution?

I hooked my internal as an external up to my Mom's Macbook Pro and it recognized my HD. I'm thinking it is something internal with the hook-up, which is awesome, because maybe I can actually fix it!!!!  Any thoughts?

  • Disk manager not assigning usb enclosure drive a letter

LAPTOP:  Toshiba Satellite 1135-S155 Windows XP Home Edition.
current preinstalled 40 GB HDD message says it is failing & backup.  want to backup to usb enclosure using western digital 80 GB HBB (didn't want to shock the system). computer does detect my toshiba 4 GB flash drive & assigns drive letter E.  DEVICE MANAGER detects the western digital hdd as: usb device generic void disc, PROPERTIES claims Location 0; VOLUME shows Disk 1, unknown, unreadable, partion style as Not Applicable, 0 MB.  Disk Management does not show usb device thus doesn't even assign a Drive letter to it.  not attaching any other usb device while i have usb enclosure hdd hookup.  have gone through troubleshooting, reinstall, basically what i can find to do from "Windows XP Inside Out Manual" unless not looking in right place.
Should i place new western digital 80 GB HDD into computer, use original restore discs that came with system, then place old 40 GB HDD into usb enclsoure and copy that hard drive onto the new 80 GB HDD? Or what?
found a hero once in this forum & hopefully will find you again.  love my old clunker & don't want to give her up yet!

Hey, I'm back.  And with  SUCCESS!!!!
Was able to take new hard drive and connect to a laptop running VISTA.  VISTA recognized the new hard drive that was in the same USB external enclosure that I was using.  VISTA recognized in both Device Manager & the much needed DISK MANAGER.  Was able to initialize immediately w/no problemos!!  YIPEE SKIPPY.
Did I dare to be BAD?  You betcha!  Took the initialized HD back home & hooked up to the TOSHIBA Satellite 1135-S155.  Again, success.  My old DISK MANAGER saw it, I was able to continue to partition & format it!!!  Why WinXP Home Edition couldn't initialize it? - Is one I'll leave for the cosmos.
Anyway - Who says you can teach an old dog new tricks - HA!  Little did they know about ME - oh, ahem, and of course JERRY aka The HERO and also The Wondrous CEE-64.
So excited was I, and how could I NOT be?  That I immediately tried the FREE Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition that was suggested by The Wondrous CEE-64 on the 08-29-2009 7:03 PM session.  As I was hoochie-cooching around in my NEWER SHOES, I suddenly I noticed that after burning 'Volume 5' onto a CD-R - ERROR MESSAGE (Error occurred while writing to file), hmmm - inserted a different CD-R, again same message, hmmm - inserted a different CD-R yet, hmmm - same message & got the hint.    Shall I go on?  OK you asked for it.
After checking Western Digital website & running one of their programs.  The initialized, partitioned, formatted WD Scorprio Blue HD was just being recognized as a USB Generic Mass Storage Device. Hmmm - maybe because the Western Digital Edition couldn't detect the new hd being from WD, could that be  the problem?  Closed and uninstalled the FREE Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition.
Per HERO Jerry's suggestion on 8-27-2009 12:00 PM, I downloaded FREE Acronis True Image 2010 Home Edition.  Loaded fine, reread the users guide (serveral times).  Attached the USB external enclosure (YES, the hard drive was inside) started the program, used CLONE DISK option, TA-DA it worked.
Yep, it has to reboot.  Okey-dokey.  UNTIL it came to me having a problem.  This TOSHIBA requires an F1 button to be pushed after start up AND it doesn't like the USB GENERIC MASS STORAGE DEVICE to be attached during boot up.  It stops & requests either F2 (setup) or F_ (I forget) and doesn't respond until I 'safely remove the USB device', then the F1 button.  SOMEHOW, after swapping out the drives  (THAT went really well, pat on the back) & Started the computer up.  YUP, Toshiba intro screen pops up, then the F2 etc. screen, & waited longer than usual.  Pushed the F2, saw that it is the WD drive with larger capacity, exit, then a dark screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner came on.  That was it.  Nothing for a minute or two, tried just shutting the laptop off.  Wouldn't.  Ended up swapping the hard drives while the fan was running.  Using the old TOSHIBA 40GB drive again.
Whada say?  One more time for old times sake?  Or should I just hang it up?  What do I do now, pleazzzze and thank-you.
PS - Can't wait, this stuff is getting good!

  • External Hard Drive not mounting. In Disk Utility, the partition in the drive is greyed out.

So my Seagate 500GB drive, didn't mount the other day, and I investigated a bit and tried repairing the disk and this happened... please someone give me hope! Ihad so many important and irreplaceable videos and documents on this drive!!!

    What drive? make/model/size etc
Normally an unformatted drive will cause a dialogue on startup (eject, ignore, initialize)
    Moving isn't going to help.
Look inside to see the drive will slide in and you don't have any issue.
    Then run Apple Hardware Test
More likely if anything is drive is DOA; logicboard; 'foreign' format that DU can't mount.
Putting in a FW case might be handy.

  • Disk Utility: "Modifying Partition Map"

Good Afternoon all. Im not sure whether this is a problem or not but i have run disk utility to partition my hard drive, and as of now it has been running for over 24 hours.
    700 Gb Hdd Partitioned at 487 ( Mac OSx ) and 210 ( Windows NTFS )
The 210 was partitioned by Bootcamp and xp is installed and runs fine
I am attempting to partition the 210 by 55 to allow for the inclusion of Vista
I ran Disk utility yesterday around 9 or 10 and since then it has been saying modifying partition map.
i dont believe it's frozen or has stalled because it responds and i have burned a disk using disk utility. however if i attempt to close it it warns me of damage.
so my issue is whether or not i should just wait it out or if there is something safe i can do. Additionally if installing vista there is a bad idea i would like to be advised.
    Thanks In Advance

It's most likely stuck and not going to finish. I experienced this once while creating a new partition for testing purposes. Force quiting will loose any unsaved changes including a partition that's being modified but it looks like your only option at this point. It should not affect your current Mac partition however I'm unsure if it will affect your XP partition. Boot camp works well but in general I would say it's not a good idea to try and re-size or split existing partitions that have data. To do what you want to do you could use Boot camp to create another partition but it would only take the space from your Mac volume. You would probably have to backup or make an image of your XP system then start over using Boot Camp to create the 2 partitions of the size you want.
FYI: You would probably have a better chance getting an answer for this question over in the Boot Camp forum.

  • I have a new USB thumb drive that works in my 2010 iMac but not in my 2012 MacBook Pro

Today I purchased an 'autodrive' usb thumbdrive at Staples.  The drive works fine on my mid 2010 iMac, and my Asus Netbook running Windows 7.  However, it is not recognized at all by System Information or Disk Utility on my mid 2012 Macbook Pro.  Both Macs are running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
If I connect my 2 year old SanDisk USB thumb drive to the same USB port on my Macbook Pro, it is immediately recognized and a finder window opens.  The SanDisk drive is also recognized properly by the iMac and the Netbook.
Is there any way to further debug this issue to get a better idea of why the device is not being recognized by the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks,
    -Scott

I am having this exact same problem with my New MBP 15" quad core 2.6GHz i7 on 10.8.2.  I have other thumb drives that work, but an older thumb drive that works on my prior MBP 15" 2.7GHz dual core i7 on 10.7 and XP and Windows 8 laptops isn't recognized at all by the newer MBP.   This thumbdrive is only 256MB and may be USB 1, but USB 1 stuff should work on a USB3 interface unless it's a bug.  I've freshly formatted the drive and tested it with disk utility on the older MBP, so it's an issue with the newer Mac's USB controller or MacOS 10.8.2
    I suspect a bug.

  • How to make OSX boot disk using a USB thumb drive? The final answer?

Well guys I am getting really conflicting information about possibility to use USB thumb drive for boot up drive for OSX! Some people say yes, some say no, some - not sure.
Here is the question formulated as straight as possible:
A Mac user wants to create OSX 10.6 boot-up disk on a USB thumb drive, so it can be used to start the Mac instead of using manufacturer’s CD. Also, (thumb drive’s size permitting) the Mac user must be able to install software on it, as it is done on the internal HD.
The computer is MacBookPro , Intel based , OSX 10.6
The USB thumb drive is 16 Gb brand new .
    So,
what the EXACT steps will be, to properly Mac format the thumb drive with OSX disk utility and then install on it the OSX 10.6 from the manufacturer's grey CD that comes with the Mac?
Could someone, who has practical experience and is absolutely sure about the exact steps provide the final answer, please?
Thanks in advance to old hands & pro Mac Users willing to clarify this topic !

    Hi
The instructions to make a bootable USB are [here|http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/usbflash.htm]
I have made a bootable USB following the above instruction and also had enough space to install a few utilities. It works fine for me.
I usually like to check disk health of my MBpro intel via disk utilities off the USB after booting from it. Not that this is a recommended way or anything, just that I like to do it that way.

  • USB Thumb Drive Not Mounting With Mavericks

I have several Thumb drives (FAT32) that no longer mount on my iMac running Mavericks.
The thumb drives do not show up in finder nor do they show up in disc utilities.
The USB bus still seems to work since other USB devices seem to connect to it, but none
of the thumb drives do.  I have done an SMC and PRAM reset with no luck.  I do not have
TUXERA nor NTFS-3G so nothing their to disable.
I do have a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion and all thumb drives do work with that.
    Out of ideas here.

But given that other USB devices work here — what sorts of other USB devices?
I have 2 external hard drives that work on the very same USB port and an external blu-ray drive as well.
Are there any add-on anti-virus or anti-malware "tools" installed?
    None.  Never have.
To check the USB bus, remove all hubs and all other external USB devices from this Mac, reboot, connect one of the thumb drives directly to the Mac, and try again.
Everything re-connected except for the thumb drives.  External hard drive and Blu-ray drives popped right up but no USB flash drives.
Try a different and newly-created login, and see if the flash drives work there.
I used the Guest login and the same thing, everything works except the Thumb drives.
To check the local OS X installation, see if booting this Mac from the recovery partition (if one is present)
    None is present.
or booted from another (external) OS X disk allows access to the thumb drives.
I have en extern HD that is blank, but I do not know how to install Mavericks on it then run it.
Is there anything in common among these failing USB disks?  Same brand and model?  Or a mixture of different thumb drives?
They are all FAT32, other than that no I have Cruzer, Kingston and PNY brands.  2GB 4GB and 16GB.
Are the OS X systems involved both similar configurations, or are they very different versions?
Mac Mini is Mountain Lion and has no issues with the thumb drive.
Intel iMac is Mavericks and my Mac Book Pro is Mavericks.  Neither one of them can mount my USB sticks.
Thanks for your complete reply, you had some items that I did not try but unfortunately it did not help yet.

  • Disk Utility not finding Hard Drives after Updates

    Howdy;
Updated my B&W G3 to 10.4.4 and itunes 6.0.2. After update and restart, ran Disk Utility (DU), which seem to just get into a loop "Gathering disk data". Force quit DU and tried running from Tiger DVD, but similar story.
I have done a little research and there has been many problems with DU linked to itunes 6.0.2 update, but not quite the same (no B&W G3 w/10.4.4 and different DU hang point).
    I followed: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1505537#1505537
and even tried moving iTunes to desktop; trashing several iTunes.pkg files; restarting, all to no avail.
    Any additional suggestions out there?

I doubt that any jumpers are needed, since this is the only (master) drive in the system. WD's site has pretty good info on this. Verify for yourself however.
    Also, from their site:
How to partition and format an internal slave drive or an external drive in a Mac OS X (all versions).
    Answer
In Mac OS X, you can use the built in Disk Utility to partition and initialize the drive so it will appear on the desktop.
    1. Open the main drive (the drive that contains the operating system).
    2. Open the Applications folder.
    3. Open the Utilities folder.
    4. Select Disk Utility.
    5. The drives are displayed on the left side of the window. Click on the drive that you wish to partition (the top drive listing for the hard drive that you want to work with).
    6. Once the drive is selected click on Partition.
    7. Click on the Options button to select the partitioning scheme.
    8. Click on Apple Partitioning Scheme or Apple Partitioning Map and then click on the OK button.
    9. You will see several options for setting up the drive. Once you have selected the number of partitions, the format type you want, and a volume label, click the Partition button.
    10. Following the completion of this process, the drive will appear on the desktop.

  • Can not find USB Hard Drive with Airport Utility Programme

I am quite new to MAC and I am having difficulty making my Iomega External HD seen by the Airport Extreme Base Station (new version). I have the latest Aiport Utility software 5.2.1 but when I go to the hard drive section it does not see it. The drive is connected via USB. Can anyone help me please.

Hi, this could be caused if the hard drive isn't in the right file system. To make it work, it needs to be formatted in a 'MAC OSX EXTENDED' format. You can do this in Disk Utility if you connect the drive directly to the computer and go to applications/utilities/disk utility.
Another question that may be asked this external hard drive, does it have its own power supply? If it does it should be ok, but some small portable thieves power which the router probably wont provide. If this is the case you can sort it by getting a powered USB hub (which don't cost much).
Another issue you might come across was a bug I found if you give the Hard Drive a name and connect it to the router and it appears and the next time you unplug the router power and connect it again it sees it but you cant connect to it on any computer over the network, the hard drive name needs changing every time you unplug the router, its a silly bug but im glad I finally worked it out.
Also, Airport Utility has a new software update, so have a look for it, should be 7.2.1 now!
Let me know how you get on!

  • Using Apple "Disk Utility" to partition a disk drive

I have seen some incorrect info on the forums about partitioning disks.
You CAN do this with Disk Utility.
To do this will erase the new partitions you create, so BE CAREFUL.
To partition a disk, start Disk Utility and click on the DRIVE (not Volume) you want to partition.
The DRIVEs are the icons all the way on the left side of the Disk/Volume window area.
If you click on a Drive, the PARTITION tab will appear. Click on it and it's pretty self-explanatory.
    Good luck.

It looks like the mountable image option only applies to NTFS partitions. The preferences interface does not show a choice for FAT32.

  • USB thumb drive not recognized on nc6120 laptop

I had Windows XP Professional on my NC6120 Compaq laptop.  Due to Microsoft saying it was an illegal copy I had to get a different OS.  I purchased a Dell Windows 7 Professional and loaded it via the different prompts.  Once loaded I had no sound, no mouse, no USB operative.  I fiddle fooled around in spite of these assinine sites that say they have the driver you need as though they are legite and all I got was crap loaded that I did not want or ask for.  After many hours of trying I finally got some sound recognigition, and the mouse to work.  I still have some graphics problems and script problems along with the fact that the computer does not recognize a thumb drive in any of the USB ports.  I have tried everything that I could find on the internet and HP, Intell etc and I am at a loss as what to do.
I am not a fan of Microsoft forcing me to upgrade or because of no support to XP anymore but like everyone else I am held hostage to this monopoly.
Can any one help to at least get the USB's to recognize an "E" drive using a thumb drive.  Is it possible that this Compaq NC6120 laptop doesn't have the gears to run Windows Professional?
    Please help.

    Hi:
W7 should work on your model by using some of the Vista drivers from your notebook's support and driver page.
I have no idea why the usb ports aren't working.
Suggest you reinstall W7 and do the following...
    1. Install the Intel chipset driver first and reboot.
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20019&lang=eng&ProdId=816
    2. Manually install the Vista graphics driver as follows...DL and run this file.  You will get an unsupported operating system error.
    http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=447347&swItemId=ob_47264_1&swEnvOid=2094
Go to the device manager and click to expand the Display Adapters category.  Click on the standard vga adapter.
Click on the driver tab. Click on update driver.  Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.  That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp34749.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install.  Then reboot.
Audio:  Be connected to the internet.  Go to the device manager and click on the multimedia audio controller needing drivers.  Click on the driver tab. Click on Update driver.  Select the automatic search and after a few minutes, Windows update should find, download and install the audio driver.
Wireless:  If your notebook has the Intel Pro 2200 B/G, manually install the Vista Intel wireless driver like you did the graphics driver.
Card reader:  Use the vista driver from the nc6400.
Wireless assistant.  Use the W7 driver from the 6910p
Quick Launch Buttons:  Use the W7 driver from the 6910p.
Touchpad:  Use the W7 driver from the 6910p.
If you need any other drivers, please let me know.
Oh, and if you don't like all the Dell stuff showing up on your PC, just download this plain W7 Pro 32 bit SP1 ISO file directly from Microsoft, and use the Dell W7 Pro product key on it.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24280.iso Windows 7 Professional x86 English
Then use this tool to transfer the ISO file to a 4 GB USB flash drive or DVD.
The tool will also make the media bootable.
