Disk utility not showing volume

I was having boot issues on a mac mini running OS 10.5 so decided to boot off the DVD and run Disk Utility. When Disk Utility came up it listed the hard drive and the DVD drive but it did not list the volume under the hard drive. This means the volume could not be selected thus all the repair/verify buttons are grayed out. Any next steps? Would rather not have to erase the entire drive.
Thanks,
Jim

James,
I don't know for sure but looking into TestDisk may be of help to your situation. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk It claims to be able to restore a bad partition table.
I hope that helps

  • Snow Leopard Disk Utility not showing Disk

Heya, before anyone jumps to conclusion that the disk is just dead, please read the following info.
Background: Basically I'm upgrading to Snow Leopard and I had a striped RAID that I wanted to break and format. They held my Leopard install and I know there's issues w/ SL install seeing RAID (even doing disk boot didn't work for me) so I went the route of booting from SL disk and I broke the soft RAID.
_The problem:_ After I broke the RAID only one of the two HDs was showing up, the one in Bay 1. So I formatted it to see if for some reason it would do something about it. No dice. I even tried taking out the other disk and putting it in bay 1, but to no avail.
*So here's the weird part*: I booted with the Leopard disk and it saw both drives with no problem. The other one that wasn't showing up still was thinking it was part of it's own RAID but after I Erased it, it looked exactly the same stat wise as my other Seagate. So key point: _nothing wrong with the HD_.
_Other info:_ I went into the System Profiler on each booted OS disk and the Leopard one was showing both drives in the Serial-ATA section just fine, wheres Snow's Profiler said there was some error finding the info. Believe me I tried this several times, back and forth.
So has anyone had and/or fixed a problem like this where Snow Leopard's disk utility is only finding one (a specific one) hard drive that was perhaps previously raided?

Update : So I talked to Apple Support and they suggested installing Leopard on the one drive that is found and seeing if it recognizes the drive afterward. It did in fact find the drive just as I had named it. *The Bad*: obviously I can't create a soft RAID using the boot drive while actually booted up and of course the SL install disk still won't find the drive.
But there's a new development: I did the sleep wake test to make sure I didn't go through all this trouble for nothing (I was having a wake from sleep problem in Leopard) and after successfully waking it gave me a nice error saying how a drive was ejected improperly *and the drive no longer would show up in the finder* and the system profiler threw up another error.
I did the same sleep wake test booted in Windows 7 on my 3rd bay drive and both drives would show up and be usable (or at least readable) so I'm still pretty sure it's not the drive.
It must be something about OS X not wanting to power-up or read my other drive correctly, especially after sleeping?

  • Repair permissions with disk utility not showing details

I've recently upgraded from Lion OSX 10.7.5 directly to Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3.
    1. Now, every time I use the Disk Utility to repair permissions, the details of the repair are missing. Not that I really need to see the repairs but the information confirmed that something was done. Now I see only what appears on the attached screen shot at the end of the repair.
When I had OSX 10.7, I always saw which files were repaired.
    2. Also, the estimated time for repair is off. Under Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3, the estimate says a fixed "1 minute" and remains so until finished. I just time the repair at 3.5 minutes and the estimate remained at 1 minute.
Under OSX 10.7 the repair time estimate would begin at 23 minutes or so then quickly work itself down in minutes until the repair was completed.
Can anyone tell me what's going with my iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.8.3).

    James --
Over the years, the function or understanding of Repair Permissions has changed drastically.  When I first came here in 2004, lots of people thought RP was the "be all, and end all" of all Mac problems. (Myself included.)  It was right up there with "take two aspirins, and call me in the morning." kind of response.
In fact, the notations you see are not in fact "errors."  They're notations.  And if you run them all day, you will almost always see the same ones over and over.
Every once in a while, if you experiences really wonky problems that seem unexplanable, the option to RP makes sense. Especially after a huge major application installation, especially Adobe apps
RP is not like a regular maintenance procedure.  So, if you're not expelriencing very significant problems with your Mac, repairing permissions is probably not a good use of your time.

  • Disk utility not showing!!!

I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck

My disk utility not work like it used to, it does not show up a disk when I put it in the drive. And I can't copy to disk anymore. Hi-
The last time I saw a similar problem to yours, he was also running Panther. I advised reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo update, and his woes were gone.

Another thought is to check System Preferences/CD's & DVD'S, and check your selection nuder "When you insert a blank CD" (or DVD).
Running Disk Utility from the install disk, and repairing permissions is also another possible fix.

OS X Disk Utility not recognizing Seagate 3TB drive in dock
Been scouring the webs and can't quite figure this one out.
I just purchased a Seagate 3TB drive intending on using it for Backup.
Ended up plugging it into a dock and couldn't get it to show up in Disk Utility..
Interesting enough, I plugged this into an HP laptop and it displays just fine.
    Anyone know the solution?

  • Disk utility not completing, please help...

Hi everyone, I'm trying to erase an external drive I've had for a while. I formatted it once with no probs. I've hooked it all up via USB, gone to disk utility, clicked the volume, clicked erase, zero out all data, selected "journaled" from the drop down list, clicked erase. It get about 90% done, which takes about 2 hours (80gb drive) then just doesnt move and i have to force quit.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Phil

If that HD has a FireWire connection, try Disk Utility with that configuration.
If it doesn't have a FW connection, then you can try these steps. Unmount the ext HD, power it down, and disconnect it. Boot the computer with the install disk, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Utilities, and repair the disk and permissions. If you get a clean bill of health, then quit DU and select Utilities->Startup Disk->G5 boot volume and click Restart. Reinstall the 10.4.9 COMBO update, after restart, launch Disk Utility, and repair permissions. Shutdown the computer for at least 30 minutes. Restart it, hook up the ext HD, and give Disk Utility another whirl.
Another option is to get a FWHD. They're much faster and more reliable than USB.

  • My Startup Disk can not show in Finder.

My Startup Disk can not show in Finder.but it can be used in OSX normally.
So can I put it back to Finder?

If the startup disk is for Mac OS 9, neither MacBook nor PowerMac G5 can boot into 9. Only the PowerMac G5 can use Mac OS 9 in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic.
Please be more detailed what sort of Startup Disk you are talking about, which operating system, and which machine this is a problem with.

  • Disk Utility not working on Yosemite

    Hello all,
Since updating to the latest OS X Yosemite I've noticed that Disk Utility no longer works. I use Spotlight to search for "Disk Utility" or click on the file within the "Utilties" folder but yet it still brings up the following error message:-
Any suggestions on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have two versions of Disk Utility available to use. Did you clean install? Are you running separate partitions with different OS X systems? Search with spotlight and choose show in finder at the bottom of the list. Double click the Finder Ikon in the main window, this will open a finder window with all the search results. Applications should be your top hit. If you have two Disk Utility's showing, Single click on each and the path for each will be displayed in the bottom bar of the Finder window. Or Command-I will bring up the info window on each one.
    Hope this helps.

  • Disk Utility not recognizing externals correctly

I have two external hard drives that are connected through a USB 2.0 hub. One is called "Photo Store" and the other is called "Photo Store Backup". When I load them, they both show up on the desktop properly. However, when I load Disk Utility, things show differently. They show as separate physical drives, but with the same name and all the same information (UUID, etc.). At the same time, it still shows the drives on the desktop properly.
What can I do to fix this?

My fix was to just reformat one of the drives. That changed the UUID which was conflicting between the two drives.
