Disk Utility - Permissions Database keeps listing errors.....

Someone could help in deciphering what could be wrong with my OS. Every time I run the Disk Utility to do a verify/repair database permissions, it get a series of errors being displayed.
I copy herewith the history of a verify permission:

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

I want to wipe my HD clean. Command R won't bring up disk utility, it just keeps spinning on the Apple logo. I'm running 10.9.3 on a macbook pro.

Select the Recovery partition. It should boot to a screen like this:
Select Disk Utility and reformat your boot drive, formatting with a single GUID partition as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Once the partition is erased go back to Reinstall Mac OS X and install the OS on your newly formatted partition. It may take a while and if you downloaded Mavericks from the Mac App Store (duh!) you may need your Apple ID and password handy.
Installing the OS may take quite some time as it will necessitate downloading the 5GB+ OS file.
Now you'll be able to make a clean installation of everything.

I try to create a compressed disk image of my Desktop using Disk Utility and get the following error:

  • Disk Utility Restore Process Input/Output Error

    <Image Edited by Host>
My niece's MBP specs above. If I posted a picture of this poor machine, there'd be a lynch mob of passionate Apple fans arrive at my door wanting a public hanging...It's been dropped no less than a dozen times. (The ethernet port is stretched out of shape so badly that a standard plug will no longer fit the port!!!).
Among other physical injuries, the screen won't present an image (just flickers white lines on black background, hinge has partially detatched, suspect the ribbon that transmits the display signal has been compromised). A visit to the Apple store tells us (by plugging into a cinema display via TB) that the hard drive is still in tact and data is salvageable. Keyboard and trackpad both work fine (surprisingly).
Long story short, she's acquired a new MBA, been read the riot act about looking after it, and I have the unenviable task of salvaging her data, approx 275Gig.
    My objective is to obtain:
    1. A full copy of the data (existing file structures) - Complete
    2. A bootable disk image of the MBP - Incomplete and troublesome
    I have at my disposal:
Mid 2011 27' iMac (Intel i7) on Mav
MBPr13 (third host if needed) on Mav
A home ethernet network with enterprise grade switching
    A Lacie 5BigPro 10TB NAS
A couple of 1 & 2 TB Toshiba external drives, and
Enough network adapters, USB cables and thunderbolt cables to suffice. Admin priviliges all round. All disk permissions repaired.
Current connection config is the MBP thunderbolted to the iMac. I can use TDM (if I need to interface with the MBP using the iMac display) or can boot in Target Disk Mode if I want to see the MBP disk image on the iMac.
Regarding Objective2: A bootable disk image of the MBP, I first tried to use the Restore function in Disk Utility, but that only works when booting the host in Recovery mode, whcih doesn't support TDM, so I'm flying blind...
Next try, I booted the MBP in Target Disk Mode, which allowed me to use the Restore process from the iMac's Disk Utility, select the MBP HD, and target an external drive (one of the Toshiba's) plugged in to the iMac via USB.
I've now tried this Restore 3 times, each time getting the following I/O error (at about 45 munites in to a projected 4 hour process):
    Any thoughts on root cause?
And (given my screen/display limitations) am I missing a far simpler option?
    Cheers, Sla

If that were the case you would not get in/out errors. These errors occur because the drive is no longer able to transfer data which is a hardware failure.
If you want to post an image to the forum then you need to open the message editor and click on the Camera icon you will find in the editor's toolbar. Then select the image you wish to post and click on the Insert button.

  • How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk?  I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t  HELP!!!

Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook.

  • Disk Utility - permissions

Every time I verify permissions I get the same results:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Group differs on "private/var/root/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist", should be 0, group is 90.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
As soon as it is repaired I recheck and get the same results. Anyone have any ideal what this means?
As well, now when I attempt to "verify disk" Disk utility freezes and will not even respond to "force quit". Any info on this will be appreciated. Thanks.

Early permissions checks after a major upgrade may take quite awhile. The ARDAgent message is accurate but can be safely ignored according to Apple.
    See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925 .
Make sure you are running Disk Utility while booted from the Leopard dvd. Run "repair disk" to fix any errors it may find. If DU repairs something, run "repair" again to verify.
    Hope this helps,
    Slim

  • Disk Utility-Permissions Repair doesn't seem to repair anything

I have recently installed Leopard, and so far I haven't had any serious issues. However, I used the 'Repair Permissions' function in Disk Utility today, and it doesn't seem to have repaired anything.
As a rule, I run 'Repair Permissions' two times in a row, just in case it missed anything the first time around. When I ran it a second time, everything that it had supposedly fixed on the first run was showing up the second time.
Is there any reason that permissions repair wouldn't be making the necessary changes? If so, how can I fix it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

I verified disk permissions, Repaired disk permissions and then verified disk.......
    Should I be worried?
    Thanks for any help!

Lot's of problems there.  Hope DU can fix them.  You don't want to continue using that drive in the state it is in now.  Nothing wrong physically with the drive (I believe).  Just what's on it.
You cannot repair the disk you are booted from, only verify it.  That's why repair was grayed out and that why its telling you to boot from another bootable disk.  If you don't have one then boot from your installer dvd which has a copy of DU on it.  Then try to repair your boot disk and hope it's successful.
If it isn't successful, then you may have to try to use Disk Warrior (which has it's fans and detractors as to how "good" it is).
Of course if you have a backup you could just erase the drive and recreate from your backup.  This is one of the reasons to always have backups.  Alternatively if you do have a backup, then you could boot from it as I mentioned above to run DU from there (hold down option key hear the boot beep to be able to select a bootable drive).

  • Disk utility permissions question

    Hello,
I am VERY happy with my Mac. However, since installing OS10.5 (upgrade from my 10.4) whenever I used my Disk Utility to repair permissions, I get a HUGE list of repairs. Every time I used the Utility, it comes up with this huge list that, as far as I can tell, is all the same.
So my question is, is it actually repairing the permissions?
I've never had this happen on my previous OS. If something showed up, it repaired it and then, when I run the utility again, it shows that all is well and no repairs are necessary.
Can anyone help me? I have also been having problems with my Toast Titanium 10 and my MOTU Digital Performer 5 since my OS upgrade.
I took a screen shot of my Utility permissions after it's been run. I could send that to you if you would need to see it.
Thank you for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Disk Utility Permissions Repair Running Slow

I often go into Disk Utility and Verify Permissions, Repair Permissions, Verify Disk and Repair Disk.
Usually takes 3-4 minutes per item.
    Now saying 9 hours.
    Any ideas?

It will quickly drop. I've had it start with 22 hours, but only ended up taking 6 or 7 minutes.
Just for your further interest there is no reason to "often" repair or verify permissions or the hard drive. These should only be done if a permissions error or disk error has been reported or as a precautionary prior to installing new system software or cloning or backing up a drive for the first time.

  • Disk Utility Failure on Exit (-9972) error?

    Hello,
I get the following error when "Repair Disk" fails:
"The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"
Does anyone know what this DU error means?
I went through several pages of technical articles and none mentioned this particular error message. I get this error by running DU from my Panther DVD and strangely enough, when the same thing is done using my Tiger DVD, I do not get the (-9972) part of the message. However, the bottom line was the same for both DVD's: the HD could not be repaired.
At the moment, I am experiencing no problems with my PB, however I could be enjoying the 'calm before the storm'. I just recently had a serious sys crash, so this could be a lingering symptom of those problems.
This may or may not be serious, but I would like to know what this means before I proceed with the installation of Tiger. I can Repair Permissions using either DVD, but the fact that I cannot successfully perform a 'Repair Disk' is troubling.
All comments or suggestions are most welcome.

I want to pass this on to you because you were very kind to help me out and I can add some good news to those who may have this same problem in the future.
My progress will serve as an update in regards the following Disk Utility error and Mr. Kawashima's very descriptive and informative post as provided above.
In his post of Oct 4, 2005, Mr. Kawashima stated that DISKWARRIOR could not repair problems such as
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"
I received the identical error message using Disk Utility and could not make the repair using either TechTool Pro or DISKWARIOR. I had a two-year old version of DW but went to Alsoft's website and downloaded the latest update. I had emailed Alsoft about my problem a few days ago and was told to download the update and try to make the repair again.
Once the download was completed, I discovered that they provide a very simple way of creating a fresh DW CD which contains the latest updated code. Bottom line: I booted this updated DW CD and it repaired my HD. I no longer get the above stated error.

  • Disk Utility Permissions Problem

When I use Disk Utility to verify my startup disk I get the following message:
    Disk Utility Internal Error
Disk Utility has lost its connectionto the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue.
Please Quit & Relaunch Disk Utility.
It makes no difference no matter how many times I try it always fails. I have also used Disk Utility from the CD and I get the same message.
Any suggestions on how to overcome this problem?

    Stanley,
The error you're getting is consistent with a problem after installing iTunes 6.0.2. It happens on some, but not all, Panther systems running 10.3.9. It seems like it might depend on what version of iTunes was originally installed. There's a work-around that involves delete the the receipt packages for earlier versions of iTunes.
    The work-around is this:
    1. Drag iTunes to the desktop.
    2. Repair permissions.
    3. Go to the /Library/Receipts/ folder (that's the one in the top level of you hard drive, not in your Home folder) and trash all iTunes "pkg" files except for iTunesX.pkg and the iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Empty the trash.
    4. Move iTunes back to the Application folder.
Once you've done these steps, you shouldn't have a problem repairing permissions again.

  • Disk Utility DVD+R DL Burn Error..Please Help

I am trying to burn my backup image of Retail OS X Leopard 10.5.6 onto a DVD+R DL so that I can re-format my macbook because I have been experiencing some issues lately. The image is verified but about half way through the disk writing process, it says that it is finishing the burn, closing the disk, and than I get an error.
I have tried to burn the image on 2 different brands of disks wondering if that may be the issue (Verbatim and Memorex), but I am still having problems. My macbook is about a year old so I'm hoping that its not a hardware issue because the drive works for everything else.
I'm hoping that someone can help me figure out how to get the leopard image on a dvd since disk utility is not working properly. I also have an external usb hard drive, but I'm not sure if I can use that to boot my macbook with??
Here is the disk utility log excerpt:

    Thanks!!!

Ok I have been experiencing the same issue when trying to create a back up copy of my retail version of MAC OSX Leopard. What I have finally figured out is that you need to create the copy from a image with a .cdr extension. I don't know the details but it works. I blew through too many DVD+R DL disk than i am comfortable with.. they're **** expensive. So this is what I did:
-First create a new image with the disk utility app in your Utilities folder.
-under the format drop down menu, choose "Master DVD, CD". Encryption set to None.
-after you have created the image, then go back to Disk Utility and select the .cdr image that you just created and select Burn. Place a DVD dual layer into the mac and i chose the slowest burn speed.. (2.4). it should burn flawlessly.
Good Luck and hope that helps!

  • Disk Utility permissions - file does not exist ?

I did just do a complete erase and re install.
While in the rebuilding process`s i have noticed that when it comes to doing the update in the cycle of events, java updates will do one and then the updater will pause and check again install another java update and pause, blank screen , weird behavior. i just wait with patience while the system does it`s thing.
I have built up to where there is no more updates available and as usual i do run the Disk Utility after each sequence of updates that the updater provides. I am running Disk Utility from the Machine and not from the upgrade to 10.5 CD or install 1 CD. I have seen that running D U from the CD does not give as full a report in comparison to what the machine does.
    Disk Utility shows this:
    Jul 23 20:42:17 Macintosh Disk Utility[164]: Permissions differ on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are lrw-rw-r-- .
when i go into the terminal to get a closer look with:
    $ ls -l Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources
ls: Library/Internet: No such file or directory
ls: Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources: No such file or directory
    and then this:
    $ ls -l /Library
    drwxrwxr-x 13 root admin 442 Jul 23 19:10 Internet Plug-Ins
    shows that it does exist.
    yet when i try:
    $ ls /Internet Plug-Ins
ls: /Internet: No such file or directory
ls: Plug-Ins: No such file or directory
    or
    $ ls -l /InternetPlug-Ins
ls: /InternetPlug-Ins: No such file or directory
Question: ? is a question mark, what do i do, what can i do ?.
any feed back on this puppy ?.
    Thank you

    -rw-rw-r-- , they are lrw-rw-r--
That's because you have updates installed that are more recent than the repair permissions data. Ignore it.
    ls -l Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources
You omitted the first / in the path, and you didn't escape the space. The correct command is:
    ls -l '/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources'
    or:
    ls -l /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources
