Disk Utility quits unexpectedly

Hi
I have recently noticed that disk utility quits unexpectedly whenever I open it.  Here's what I've tried so far:
1.  Boot in recovery mode, and repair permissions and verify the disk (I only have a single internal disk), which works fine and says it is successful.
2.  Trash any DiskUtility preferences files (local and in /Library/Preferences)
3.  Reset my PRAM
4.  Try disk utility from a different user
but none of this has helped.  When I click on the "send information to Apple" the relevant bit seems to be:
Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000068
I'm running Lion 10.7.1 on a quad core MacPro with 12Gb RAM.
Any ideas?
Regards/Thanks
Shaun

Hi
I took your suggestion but with a slightly different twist and it worked...  Rather than do a full re-install of Lion, I inserted the lion boot disk I had created, and righ-clicked on Packages/BaseSystemBinaries.pkg and just installed that, assuming that's where Disk Utility would live.
Took 3 or 4 minutes, and Disk Utility is now back!  Yay!
Many thanks.

  • Getting "The Application Disk Utility quit unexpectedly"

Hi all. New to the forum.
Went to do my weekly disk Utility this afternoon and it won't open from my applications. Keep getting the error "The Application Disk Utility quit unexpectedly". Now This morning i did allow firefox to do an update, not sure if this has caused some issue. Running 10.5.6 and have been for some time with no issues. I've ran the install disk and ran Utility from there with no problems however there was a ton of stuff it was correcting. Repaired Disk as well. Restarted, tried to pull from applications, again no luck same message. I then ran Safe Boot, Reset PRAM and again still no fix. I removed Firefox, chess and some other game's I've downloaded from the apple site just to be safe. Still nothing. Anyone advise? I'm set up to meet with a Mac Gen. at the local apple store in 2 days. Anyone have any idea's? The only change I have done recently is the firefox update. UGGGG!!!

Have you tried to run Disk Utility from a system Install Disk or start-up from a system install disk and run disk utility from the disk?

  • Disk Utility quits unexpectedly every time on launch

Disk Utility is quitting on launch. I'm also having problems with all applications crashing when I try to print.
I've repaired permissions and disk errors using the startup CD that came with the G5. I've ran the hardware test CD and passed all the tests.
I first noticed the problems with the Disk Utility application when the computer failed to mount a disk image.
    I have a G5 iMac iSight running 10.4.11

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Does it crash running from the Install Disk?

Thanks but still did not work.
I called the HP Support Desk and they helped me solve the problem.
This is what they had me do:

    2) downloaded the latest HPPrintDrive from the Apple website: HPPrinterDriver2.16.1
    3) changed my IP address
    4) installed the software from the HP website
    5) installed the HPPrintDriver from the Apple webiste

  • HP Utility Quit Unexpectedly Error

I can't scan from my HP Deskjet 3054 to my Mac running Mac OS X 10.7.5.  I can scan by laying the document on the glass if I start the scanning from my computer but even then I can't scan multiple pages from the paper loader.
When I click on Scan Settings in the HP Utility folder the HP utility quits unexpectedly.  I downloaded the latest full driver but when I try to download the fix for this error it says I have a higher version of the scan component already on my computer.

    Hi richieleland,
thanks for your post and welcome to the HP Forum.
It might already be helpful if your repair disk permissions. You can do this from Disk Utility - First Aid tab, select your volume and then hit Repair Disk Permissions.
Then restart the Mac and check if you can now open and work with HP Utility. If it still fails, try again installing the fix. But if thats not possible, you may download and install the HP Printer Driver Update 2.16.1 - either through Apple Software Update or if not found there, download from Apple website: HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X
    Best regards,

Did you reboot your computer after repairing permissions & installing? If so, trash the com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist file & restart your computer.

  • 10.4.6 Disk Utility quits unexpectlty

After Update to 10.4.6 the disk utility on my system quits unexpectly after selecting any volume.
I´ve copied the old disk utility (from 10.4.5) to help it. Repairing disk permission is working with this one...
Anyway, does somebody have any suggestions what could be the problem with "not working disk utility" under 10.4.6?
    Best regards
    Mike

You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
It will also update the DU you installed.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.

  • Disk Utility quit. Missing HD space!

I decided to partition my MacBook Air's HDD so I could do a clean install of Lion and just drag and drop files to it. Simple enough, so I just put a 30GB partition on the drive in the OS Journaled format. Problem is though, during the partitioning - the "Shrinking the disk" step to be exact - it just froze up. I let it go for a while and then I got a message saying "Disk Utility has quit unexpectedly..." That was fine, my computer didn't crash, everything seemed to be okay until I checked my disk space. Turns out the 30GB partition is just counted as used up space on my HDD now. I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM like I've seen suggested to other people but nothing worked. I'm kind of rattled about this because the MacBook Air SSDs are small as it is. 30GBs of missing space is like 1/4 of my drive. Anybody with any suggestions?

Ahah! That worked great, thanks so much. I was worried I'd have to reformat my entire HDD and my latest TimeMachine backup was from almost a month ago. Wouldn't have been good.

  • Application "Raid Utility" quits unexpectedly

I have a Mac Pro (2x3Ghz Xeon, 16MB RAM), shipped with the Apple Mac Pro RAID card. This machine came with with MacOS 10.4.10 and a Leopard "CPU drop-in DVD".
I've done the following procedure twice and gotten the same result -- the Raid Utility application "unexpectedly quits".
    Procedure:
Set up the raid using the Raid Utility on the 10.4.10 installation CD
Clean install of MacOS 10.4.10. Checked the raid utility, it works
Use the CPU drop-in DVD to upgrade to Leopard. Checked the raid utility, works.
Run software update to install Leopard updates.
Raid utility does not work. Opens briefly, then "quits unexpectedly".
Would be nice to do a clean install of Leopard, but the upgrade DVD requires Tiger to be on the system already. The retail leopard DVD doesn't seem to work at all with this machine, possibly due to the RAID card.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, or if anyone has suggestions... In addition to not being able to monitor the health of the raid, now not able to dismiss a "battery is not charged" warning.

Clone OS X onto the RAID after you have it installed and upgraded on another disk, and after you build the RAID in Leopard. That way you also get a backup of OS X in the process.

The install has been made using the latest update : Photosmart-6520-series_v12.24.0.dmg.
This does work fine under Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

  • Snow leopard Disk Utility

Hi. I have recently installed Mac OS 10.6 on my Intel iMac (8,1). I am very pleased with it, but for some reason Disk Utility crashes each time I open it. I get an error message saying Disk Utility quit unexpectedly. I relaunch it, but then the same thing happens. At first I thought there was some error, so I restarted. That didn't help. Now disk utility is basically "useless." Is there any Terminal hack or something?

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. Maybe it will fix it.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
    Then Repair Permissions.

  • 'Disk Utility has lost connection with Disk Management Tool' w/ RAID 10 set

Using 4 internal drives, I have specified the following setup for each:
2 partitions, 1 'speed' of 5 GB and 1 'data' of whatever remains.
The 4 speed partitions stripe to a single RAID volume correctly.
The 4 data partitions are used to make a RAID 10 volume as follows:
The first 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-A'
The next 2 data partitions are mirrored to make a 'data-B'
    These complete correctly.
Upon attempting to strip data-A and data-B in order to finish the RAID 10 setup, Disk Utility quits with the following message:
"Disk Utility has lost connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility'.
A search here and on the nets reveals only that this message appeared in 10.3.x when attempting to repair disk permissions and had to do with a rogue iTunes support file. This is occurring on a blank system (no iTunes installed) so I don't think its the same cause.
Note that I was able to complete this setup under Tiger several times without issue, so it seems to be unique to Leopard. Does anyone know what is going on and hopefully suggest a workaround?

To answer my own issue and leave a marker here for others, I was able to successfully set up a RAID 10 partition using diskutil, indicating that the problem is Disk Utility itself and not the RAID implementation.
Disk Utility has proven itself to be bugridden (must restart frequently to get updated view of volumes; drops device names at various times; etc.) and this latest bug would seem to suggest that it should be avoided in favor of diskutil for any serious RAID construction.

The first thing to do would be to boot from the Install & Restore disc that came with your machine by:
    1. Inserting the disc, pressing the power button, and immediately after the startup chime, press and hold the C key until you see the spinning gear icon appear on the grey splash screen.
    2. After the machine has booted, pick your language, and when the Installer window appears, do not press Continue, but go to the Utilities menu in the menubar and open Disk Utility.
    3. In Disk Utility, choose your normal startup volume in the pane on the left and then click Repair Disk. If any errors show in the window, run Repair Disk again until you see 'The volume appears to be OK' in green.
    4. Quit Disk Utility, quit the installer and attempt to restart into your regular startup volume.
