Disk Utility repairing TM volume for 36+ hours! will it ever end?

The other day, Time Machine started reporting that my backup volume on my Time Capsule was not repairable that that I must reformat the disk as soon as possible. Not wanting to lose several months' worth of backups, I decided to try to repair it with Disk Utility. I launched repair on the backup volume and 36+ hours later it's still going like crazy, with the progress bar stuck on 6 minutes remaining. In the window I'm seeing endless entries like this:

If you are doing this over wireless, then yes, it's going to take quite some time. Anytime I have to run DU on my TC I connect it first to my Mac via ethernet - Much quicker.
You could try stopping it, and moving it to ethernet and then restarting the repair process over again.
Count on having to reformat the drive though if this does not work.

You can reformat the hard disk in the Time Capsule.
Go to Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> Highlight "Time Capsule Disk" on the left --> Click "Erase" on the right.
Rename the disk and select the level secure erasure. You're done and ready to begin backing up again.
I would suggest connecting the TC directly to your Mac via ethernet. Your initial full backup will go much faster and doesn't fail nearly as often as trying to do it wirelessly. “If you have an Ethernet cable, you can perform your first backup to your Time Capsule via Ethernet; this will allow for the fastest initial backup especially with client computers that use 802.11b or 802.11g.” http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1176

    After applying the latest Security Update 2008-003 (PPC) (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2008003ppc.html), Repair Permissions in Disk Utility has conflicting requirements for permissions on ./Private and ./private. One of them is wrong. This diagnostic needs to be fixed.

    Unless you are using the case-sensitive file system, they are not different directories.
    I have not yet installed this update, so I haven't seen this issue. I would say don't worry about it. In over six years of using OS X, I have never encountered anything in Repair Permissions that actually needed to be fixed. But I have seen plenty of nonsense like this, where it references the same file using different names, with different modes associated with the various names.

    I might be overly sensitive, but I detect certain similarities between these results.  In fact, it looks like Disk Utility repairs exactly the same permissions every time and those permissions are corrupted shortly after they are repaired.

    I'd like to delete this post (if I knew how).  There are several other threads on this topic, and other contributors report exactly what I observe.  It turns out it's a harmless artifact of upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6 to 10.7, rather than doing a clean install of Lion.  This article is reassuring: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448

    I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

    Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.

    I tried running Disk Utility Repair permissions and received a grey message box saying it stopped repairing permissions because of the following error:
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    This same error message was repeated in the usual information box that disk utility uses to provide detail about what it is doing.
    I believe the problem occurred because I selected Macintosh HD and added another user (myself) to read/write in the disk permission section of the information window, and I also applied that to all enclosed items. I did this in the first place because of repeated attempts and failuire to install the latest version of skype into my applications folder (being told that I didn't have enough permissions to complete the overwrite task). When I tried verifying the disk I received the error message "ERROR: could not freeze volume permissions denied"
    I switched users to a specific administrator account that I reserve for troubleshooting, but got the same result when I tried running disk utility.
    As a not unrelated issue when I attach my ipod touch, itunes says that it cannot recognize this ipod, then after about the third time simply doesn't acknowledge my itouch exists.
    everything was working well until i did this large change permissions operation.
    So does anyone have any idea what I have done (wrong) and how I can fix it?

    Uh-oh. You completely trashed your whole system by doing that. Boot up from your Leopard DVD and restore that last Time Machine backup that was made before you made that mistake. If you don't have any backups you will have to reinstall Leopard.

    Changing permissions on the HD and applying to enclosed items hosed your whole system. That's what's causing all your problems. It's doubtful that you will be able to repair it. Restore your system from backup, or reinstall.

    Hi. I’ve been experiencing some mildly squirrelly behaviour with my system (vide infra) so decided to repair the two internal hard drives on my computer. The primary hard drive is a 74.53 GB ST380013AS that came with the system; its S.M.A.R.T. Status is “verified” and Disk Utility repairs permissions just fine. However, the second internal drive (Maxtor 6L250S0, 233.76 GB, lower Bay, Journaled HFS+), despite being verified by S.M.A.R.T. status and apparently running OK, fails to unmount when I ask Disk Utility to repair it- I get the above error message in red. I have repaired this disk with DiskWarrior (v3.03) and all appears to run AOK. Can anyone tell me why I cannot get Disk Utility to run on this secondary (eg, non-startup) disk? I have tried many times and the error is reproducible. Thank you!
    G5 1.6GHz PPC, 1 GB RAM, running OS 10.4.6

    For others who have this issue, I also found very helpful advice given to this question on the MacFixIt forums by MicroMat Tech3 at

    He said: "Use the lsof command to find the open files on a volume that does not unmount or eject. Open Terminal, located in /Applications/Utilities. Type: sudo lsof | grep Leave a space after the p in grep, then drag the icon of the problem volume to the Terminal window. The pathname for the volume is pasted in for you; press Return. Then enter your administrative password at the prompt, and press Return."
    At this point, one now has a list of the open files/processes on the volume that will not unmount. You can use Activity Monitor to terminate these processes if you wish, and then the volume will unmount as it should.

    In Disk Utility, I need to change the "Volume Scheme" from the Volume Scheme pop-up menu, as listed clearly in the Disk Utility help files, from whatever it is now to a "GUID Partition Method." (Mac OS X 10.8.4)
    But when running Disk Utility, THERE IS NO Volume Scheme pop-up menu!
    I've tried everything I can think of to get it to work as the docs say: I can dismount the drive in question, or eject it, but neither of these options helps. ALL ITEMS in the Partition dialog remain grayed out except for making a second partition. I need ONE partition. But the so-called "Volume Scheme pop-up window" is NOWHERE to be found.  :-(
    I am screwed until I get an answer to this problem.

    Then boot from your backup drive if you can instead of from an installer disc. Once you've partitioned and formatted the new drive you can clone your backup to it:
    Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the new drive. Source means the old drive.
    If your backup was is a Time Machine backup using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 or later, then it should be bootable using OPTION booting:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

    I have been having some issues with a Kernel Panic on my MBP. I am trying to solve them with the help of the X-Lab, but when I do the disk utility>repair permissions I get the following messages:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Permissions repair complete
    Does anyone think this may be a contributory factor. If it is unlikely that these are not to do with the Kernel Panic, any ideas as to what they are and what I should do.

    You'll need the CD though.
    Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.

    Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC Grid using Installer whose location is: /home/.../grid/runInstaller.
    I am on step 4 of 8 in the Wizard whose contents are as follows:
    Oracle Base: /u01/11g_grid
    Software Location: /u01/app/grid
    Cluster Registry Type: ASM
    OSASM Group: dba
    When click "next" button I got this error:
    " [INS-32021] Insufficient disk space on this volume for the selected Oracle home
    Cause - The selected Oracle home was on a volume without enough disk space.
    Action - Choose a location for Oracle home that has enough space (minimum of 3,017MB) or free up space on the existing volume. "
    I test my "home" directory using the command: [ora11g@rac1 home]$ df -k
    Its Ouput:
    Filesystem: /dev/sda1 and tmpfs
    1K-blocks: 20,308,020 and 848,184
    Used: 18,888,968 and 0
    Available: 370,816 and 848,184
    Use: 99% and 0%
    Mounted on : / and /dev/shm
    I run another command: [ora11g@rac1 u01]$df -k and got the same output as above.
    My questions are:
    First, is "Oracle home" the directory "/home/..." or the directory "/u01/..." ?
    Second, how to increase the space for the correct directory to be over 3017MB (Minimum) ?

    I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2).The Virtual Disk for each VM is 20 GB whose raw device is /dev/sda (partition /dev/sda1 is the same size).
    In order to install Grid Infrastructure, I add 5 Hard Disks into the first VM rac1 and 10GB for each Hard Disk.Then create 5 ASM disks respectively as a Disk Group. Let me describe them as follows:
    OS Phyysical file: C:\VM_RAC\sharerac\asmdisk1.vmdk (asmdisk2.vmdk asmdisk3.vmdk asmdisk4.vmdk asmdisk5.vmdk)
    Corresponding raw devices: /dev/sdb (sdc sdd sde sdf)
    Corresponding partition: /dev/sdb1 (sdc1 sdd1 sde1 sdf1)
    Corresponding ASM disk: ASMDISK1 (ASMDISK2 ASMDISK3 ASMDISK4 ASMDISK5)
    When I run Grid installer step 5 of 8, I select all of 5 ASMDISK as ASM disk group on step 5 of 8 in the Wizard.
    The clusterware files are supposed to be stored in the ASM disk group.
    But it seems that on step 4 of 8 in the Wizard, the installer install the Oracle Home /u01 into VM rac1 Hard Disk /dev/sda1 and get the above error message - not enough disk space.
    My questions are:
    First, Why does the Installer store Oracle Home /u01 in /dev/sda1 because it should be in the Disk Group /dev/sdb1 (sdc1 sdd1 sde1 sdf1) ?
    Second, Does the Installer go wrongly ?
    Third, How to have the Installer store the clasterware files in ASM Disk Group ?

    I'm jammed up. I need to repair the drive in my PS3. It's FAT32-formatted. Im a Mac user, obviously. Can Disk Utility repair it, or does it only do Mac discs?
    Please say "yes" (and mean it!). (Barring, of course, hardware problems, I mean. I understand that if the platter is scratched or the controller's no good, I've had the radish.)

Any suggestions on this message and/or what else I can do to get my computer back to the way it used to run? Thank you!

    It says 199.15 GB free of 499.25 GB. Can I remove the Remote Management program to solve the other unrepairable problem?

    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    I recently got the flashing question mark on startup on my MacBook. I booted from the OS X Install Disk and am trying to repair the HD in Disk Utility's First Aid. It's been showing "Repairing volume" in green and "Look for missing items in lost+found directory" with the status bar nearly complete for the past 2 hours - would it ever really take that long?
    I'm perfectly content to let it repair and look all night if it's actually doing something but I'm worried that it's not.
    My warranty runs out tomorrow so if my hard drive is toast, I'd like to know soon!
    Any help would be appreciated.

    You might have to invest in a more thorough program like [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior> or [TechTool Pro|http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid =83]. Disk Utility is somewhat limited in it's ability to repair damaged volumes (which is why you get the flashing question mark).
