Disk utility resize mac partition resulted in 'no bootable disk' while starting from bootcamp windows partition

my macbook air had two partitions for Mac OS and Windows XP. Because XP partition is too small, I used disk utitility in Mac OS to shrink the Mac partition, and make a new FAT32 partition, which I expected to use it in windows. Till now, I can find three partitions in disk utitily, MacOS/FAT32(which is totally free)/Bootcamp(windows). And in system preference->boot disk, I can see both Mac OS X and Bootcamp Windows.
But when I reboot the computer and press "option" key while rebooting, I only see two boot device options, "mac os" and "recovery", no Bootcamp Windows.
Anybody can give me a hand to recover my previous windows and use the freed partition in windows? Thanks.

Hi Stefan!
I have a rather similar problem having a BootCamp Windows 8 Partition. I actually have 2 NTFS partitions for windows and 1 for Mac OS. The situation is:
0 - for Mac OS
1 - BootCamp windows (NTFS - boot) - 60GB
2 - Windows (NTFS) - 100GB
After updating to Maverick I have no idea why, but now I have:
  in Mac OS:
0 - Mac OS
1 - BootCamp - 160G
  In Windows:
0 - Mac OS
1 - BootCamp - 60GB
I have tried recovering the partition with a windows program, but all it could do is find it, but without any files on it.
How can I restore my partition table to the way it was?!
WHY did Mac OS mess up my windows partition table?
WHY didn't I get a warning that the Boot Table will get altered?!
Thank you for any help

Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

It sounds like your hard drive either has a software problem that Disk Utility cannot fix or that the HD has failed (mechanically).
Your Mac may have booted either to your recovery partition or to internet recovery in an attempt to repair the drive- I can't tell from your post.
I'll assume that it was the recovery partition.
Try to boot into internet recovery (hold down option command R at restart), and see if you can repair your HD with Disk Utility. You should also repair permissions while you're there.
If that doesn't work, try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If that doesn't work you have a few options:
If your mac originally came with installation disks, you can try to boot from the installation disk and then see if you can repair the HD.
There is a small chance that Techtool Pro 7  will be able to repair your HD if Disk Utility can't.
If none of that works then your HD has probably failed and will need to be replaced, which is not too difficult to do yourself if you can use a screwdriver.

  • Disk Utility won't finish creating a 30Gb encrypted disk image

How long should it take Disk Utility to create a 30Gb encrypted read/write disk image on a 32Gb Kingston USB 2.0 flash drive?
Once I started the process the dialog box said "Creating Image 'backup.dmg' [thermometer bar] Creating...". The bar took about an hour to fill up completely. Then the filled bar went completely empty and the bar is completely moving candystripes as though it's made no progress at all. It's been like that for hours. Should I give it another few days or is this never gonna work?

    Hi Michael,
Did you reformat it HFS+ or something else?
Some USB2 Flash Drives Write at a disappointing USB1 speed, but Read at USB2 speeds.
From what I can find, that isn't one of them and should take maybe an hour & a half to transfer 30 GB to it. Of course if write speed IS USB1, then you could expect 2 days or more.
I'd stop it. Reformat it, then make the Image on the HD and try transferring it.

TTBOMK the only way you can increase the Windows partition is to repartition the drive back to a single partition
    Then reinstall Mountain Lion
    Restore all data from backup
Create new larger partition with Boot Camp
    Install Windows
    Restore data from backup

  • Disk Utility resize results in corrupt BootCamp partition

    Hello,
Yesterday I decided that I wanted to put Linux on my system: taking what was already a fully working boot camp partitioned drive, resizing the main mac partition to free up some space, and then install debian on that. I went into Disk Utility and resized the drive and that worked just fine, except that when the process was complete my boot camp partition was no longer bootable. It is also no longer labeled BOOTCAMP in the diskutility (though it is when I use diskutil list on the command line), but instead named after its block device (disk0s4 in this case).
I've tried everything I can think of. Disk Utility quickly became useless (repair disk? can't repair disk!), and any sort of attempt to mount the disk on the command line just gives me an "Input/output error," so no dice there. I really need the data off this partition and from what I can tell it seems that the partition is intact, its just the partition map that has been corrupted. I also tried rEFIt's gptsync utility which also did not work. Any suggestions would be very welcome, it's very important that I get the data off this partition.

Honestly, had this process even gotten to a point at which I was on my way to a triple boot I would be much more inclined to agree with you. Yes, I did make a mistake of not backing up before the resize, totally willing to admit that. Of course, that course of discussion leads nowhere in terms of solving this problem. We all know to back things up, most of us do, some don't, nothing new here..
Having said that, this problem has nothing to do with a triple booting. This problem stemmed completely from a simple resize of a HFS+ partition in Disk Utility (a partition, I might add, that was extremely large and mostly free, so overwriting data in the shrink was also not a concern). As far as I'm concerned, if Disk Utility can't resize the partition without destroying/corrupting data, then they shouldn't offer it as a feature. At very least display some sort of message. Maybe: "Hey there! This process USUALLY works, caveat emptor!" I might have been inclined to use _any_ other product.
I'm in the process of using Data Rescue 3 to analyze the drive, and hopefully retreive most of the files. As I previously stated, the actual problem here appears to be completely with a corrupt partition map (Data Recue is having no problem accessing the files so far), but I just don't have the time to dig too deeply into how that all works to solve the problem.

  • Partitioning my External Hard Drive Using Disk Utility in Mac?

I have a 1 TB external hard drive which I've been using for a year now. It already has 200 GB used space, having approximately 100 GB of movies. Since the format of the single partition it has is MS-DOS FAT32 (so that it can be used on my Mac, Windows and PS3), I can only store files not bigger than 4 GB. Some of the HD movies I have range from 6-8 GB and I can't transfer them to the hard drive and they're occupying so much space on my laptop. Now, I wanna know if I can split the hard drive into 2 or 3 partitions (please recommend whether to use Mac OS Extended (Journaled), ExFAT or both) without having to undergo the process of backing up my 200 GB worth of files onto another hard drive; it's too tedious. Is there a way for me to directly convert some space of my single partition into a different partition with a different format while the hard drive still contains my old files? Thanks!

You can add a partition to the drive. In Disk Utility select the drive and then select the Partition Tab. The current partition layout is shown.
Grab the resize handle in the lower righthand corner of the partition display and drag it the size you want. Click in the new empty gray area and click the + sign, the new partition will be displayed. Enter the information for the partition, name and format and apply.
As for the format you should use it depends on how you will use the partition. If you will only be using it with the Mac then OS Extended (Journaled) is the way to go.
While this procedure is safe for the data on the disk as always whenever doing any system work like this a good working backup is highly recommended. And if you get to a point where you are not sure of what you are doing you can select revert to restore the settings as they are now, at anytime before you hot apply.
    good luck

  • Disk Utility - Resize Partition

I'm using Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro (i7, 2.7 GHz). I have a 500 GB HD that is divided into two partitions of 300 and 200 GB each.
I want to resize them in order to obtain two equal partition. Using Disk Utility, I was able to reduce the size of the top one (the one with the OS) but I cannot find a way to enlarge the bottom one to fill the blank space in between. In fact, I cannot drag the separator upwards, but only downwards (see the picture).
Any clue on how I might solve this without erasing all the data and create a band new partition? Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, not sure what you did to get what you have, but you cannot enlarge the bottom partition. You can only enlarge the top partition. My suggestion:
Delete that bottom partition. Drag the sizing gadget on the top partition all the way to the bottom. Click on the Apply button. When this is finished click in the resulting single partition then click on the Add [-] button which should automatically divide into two equally sized partitions. Click on the Apply button.
Now, this will erase whatever is on the lower partition you now have, but not the upper partition on which you have OS X installed. Be sure you have backups of your data before proceeding as a precaution.

  • Disk Utility - Resizing partition

I'm currently in the middle of resizing an external disk partition. It's a 250 gig partition on a 500 gig drive. Disk Utility progress bar indicates "Shrinking disk" and it's been doing this for the past 12 hours uninterrupted.
Is this normal? How long should I continue to wait? Is there any way I can safely abort the procedure? How can I tell if it's still working normally?

Ok, I aborted the procedure. It had been running about 32 hours until then. Thought I'd post an update in case this happens to anyone else.
Disk Utility was still responsive -- I told it to quit, and it warned me it was in the middle of the operation. Finder crashed in shutdown and after waiting a few minutes I killed the power by holding in the power button. Unplugged the external drive's power and the firewire cable to my mac, powered back up, plugged it in, and ... all files, folders are still there. Disk Utility shows no changes were made to partition.
I have no idea what the cause of this may have been. I captured sample processes from the Disk Utility.app and diskmanagementd. Someone knowledgeable about that this process might be make a determination.
I'm taking this as a lesson not to modify partition sizes of external drives. Backing up the entire drive and completely repartitioning the drive is the only safe way to go.

  • Disk Utility: No Mac Drive in Internal HDD. Can't format or erase.

Hey guys, I just got my new mac mini and I installed a Samsung pro 840 SSD. The thing is I messed up. I turned my mac on and everything went fine, Disk Utility showed up telling me that the drive was "unreadable". I decided to turn the thing off and start Recovery so I could install Mountain Lion onto the SSD. When igot to Recovery, disk utility told me there was an error with the drives and it had to erase them, while it was working I got the The Spinning Rainbow Beach Ball of Death so I turned my mac off. Huge mistake it seems. Now when I want to install Mountain Lion there is no available disk to install it. I started Internet Recovery and accessed Disk Utility again and the Internal Drive actually appears but with nothing installed in it. The option to erase or format are not available. I did a disk verification and repair and everything was OK. I'm going crazy over this. Please help me guys!!! I'm leaving a picture so its clearer. THANK YOU!!

Being a new Mac Mini the system is attempting to create a Fusion Drive setup out of your SSD. Do you have dual drives in the system, the built-in one in addition to the new one you installed?
This is an issue with the new Mac Mini and iMac systems (see here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57584237-263/disk-utility-may-combine-custo m-drive-setups-on-some-macs/) as these systems ship with Fusion Drive setups and Disk Utility assumes this is the desired setup when you use it to "fix" the drives.
You can see that when you select "Internal Drive" the type is "Logical Volume Group." Since this group is greater than the 840GB, my guess is this is the combined space from your SSD and the built-in one.
To clear this issue, open the Terminal (from the Utilities menu in the OS X installer), and run the following command:
    diskutil cs list
You will see a tree of information, with one grouping showing a UUID for the Logical Volume Group (the UUID will be a string of numbers and letters, separated by several dashes).
With this UUID, run the following command to destroy the logical volume group (you can try copying and pasting the UUID, though I"m not sure if the services in the Recovery HD partition support copy and paste--otherwise just type it in manually):
    diskutil cs delete UUID
When finished, follow the instructions in the artifcle I linked to above to install OS X to an external drive (if available) and use Disk Utility there to fix and manage the drives, as opposed to the version in the Recovery HD partition.

  • Disk utility hangs MAC G4?

Why does Disk Utility hang when starting? ~ Doug

    Hi, Doug.
A little more detail on how you are launching Disk Utility on the stated "G4" would help. Some more details about the specific G4, and the problems that may have led to you attempting to run Disk Utility on it would also be useful.
Try running steps 1-2 of the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.

There is no option for "DVD and CD Sharing" on a 2011 Mini because it doesn't have an optical drive to share. That option is available only on computers with an optical drive to share.
That option is used, on the other "donor" computer with an optical drive that you want to use/share. On the other computer you turn on "DVD and CD Sharing", allowing its optical drive to be shared. Then on the Mini you connect to it with "remote disc".
I believe you're thinking about the "DVD and CD Sharing" System preference in reverse; you activate it on the computer whose optical drive you want to use/share, not on the Mini without an optical drive.
See the following which explains how to set up and use remote disc: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777?viewlocale=en_US

  • Disk Utility Failed, Mac HD not working and cannot reinstall OSX

    Hi,
    I am totally frustrated.
Was working on capturing video using Final Cut Pro and the application froze. After repeated attempts, I kept getting the message to restart the G5.
I tried reinstalling Final Cut Pro - and installation failed. I ran disk utility first aid and found an error on the Mac HD (Startup Disk). So I restarted machine from the DVD (pressing the C button when restarting) and ran disk repair from the DVD OSX Utility. Still got the error that "First Aid Failed" Disk utility stopped repairing Macintosh HD because the following error was encountered. The underlying task reported failure on exit. HFS volume checked 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error. Repair attempted on volume 1, 1 volume could not be repaired.
Then I tried reinstalling OSX onto a second internal SATA HD. Installation failed. Try installing again.
So now what do I do?
I am running Mac OSX 10.4.9
    Please help...urgent.
    Thanks
    MQ

Thanks for the answer...that's what I was thinking.
The following are various issues I am considering maybe the cause:
    1. Memory - I installed 2GB a few weeks ago - third party.
    2. External HDs - I installed an external Maxtor 1.5TB drive 3 days ago.
    3. I live in Africa - and power frequently gets disrupted - even though the machine is on a "solatek" (power stabilizer and high end protector against spikes) - 2 days ago my UPS was down and for repairs - and we had three power outtages.
Lastly, as I mentioned I live in Africa - Mombasa - Apple tech support is almost non-existent here...so I am hoping I can resolve this without having to ship it abroad.
    Please help and thank you...

  • Accessing disk utility without MAC OS disk

    Hi
I am trying to re-format an external LaCie hard drive which is currently formatted in NTFS. Firstly, how do I access disk utility to format this drive if I don't have my OS X disks to hand, and secondly, what's the best format to format it to so I can read and write using Mac Leopard?
    Thanks

Don't sweat it, I would suggest most of the people on this forum started computing with PCs and then moved to Macs, I know I did. (There was this global perception that Macs were overly expensive, slow and unsupported with anything useful in the Apps department-before I'd even tried one I had discounted them).
I reckon we've all had our fair share of stupid questions.

  • Is Drive Genius the best disk utility for Mac?

I just wanted to see if any one had an opinion on Drive Genius? I have one computer that is brand new (Imac) and a Powerbook that is a bit old. I want to keep them both running in tip-top shape.

I've not used Drive Genius and cannot comment on that program but I have used Disk Warrior and Tech Tools Pro and Data Rescue. All three have fixed me up but if I had to choose just one of these it would be Tech Tools Pro because DW is a one-trick pony for the price and I think that Tech Tools Pro can now do what Data Rescue can do. I just didn't have it when I used Data Rescue but the app seems to have caught up doing what the other two can do. More for your money!
BTW: I didn't buy Drive Genius because when I decided on buying Disk Warrior I read some negatives about it. Things like additional corruption caused by running it and inabilities to fix things that seemed like Disk Utility could easily resolve. That was a few years ago so hopefully they fixed some of the failures it had that seemed as valid issues at the time.
