Disk Utility Restore - Not enough Space

Hello,
I recently erased my 8gb ipod in order to use it to transfer some things. Before I erased, I used disk utility to create a backup .dmg file.
Now, when I'm attempting to restore the ipod with this same .dmg file, it tells me there's not enough room on the disk! I'm using the exact same information that was copied from the ipod originally... shouldn't it fit back on to the ipod? (And yes, I have erased the disk again before trying to restore)

What size it the .dmg? Or the files it contains?
And what size does the erased iPod report?

When I try to restore my i phone 4s from the back up I get the message "not enough space"
Why how do i fix this since I want to unlock my phone

I suspect iTunes isn't smart enough to know that most of what you want to put on the device is what is already there. Switching from one library to another is rarely hassle free. You'll probably need to backup, then restore the device, then load up the media. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Disk Utility: Restore no longer creates bootable images?

So I have a new hard drive for my macbook, and followed the procedure I used last time of using disk utility restore to write the current hard drive image to the new disk, with the new disk in a USB enclosure.
I have done this before, it creates a bootable copy on the new disk, swap the disks away I go.
This time however the new disk is not bootable. When starting it gets to the grey screen with the rotating white pips then dumps back to a black screen with error messages (like its trying to boot of the network).
Swapping back to the old disk boots just fine, so its a problem with the image written to the new disk by disk utility restore not being bootable.
Is this a known issue? I searched the forum with no answers, and am frustrated that its now working as I have run the image twice now at about 5 hours a go for 100GB of data so I am sure its not the copy. Straight after the copy the original disk has about 10 more files than the new disk that's just been imaged, has their been some update to disk utility in the OS X patches that means it no longer copies some key files?
Note that partition on new disk is GUID as it should be, and I don't want to re-install anything from the install media I want to use make disk utility work as designed.

I found two references that may help:
    A) At http://everythingapple.blogspot.com/2007/11/use-powerpc-mac-to-create-bootable.h tml it says "PowerPC Macs use the Apple Partition Map, but this poses no problem for Intel Macs, even though Intel Macs use the GUID Partition Table. The reverse is not true however. PowerPC Macs cannot boot disks with a GUID Partition Table."
    1. Open up Disk Utility and select your backup drive. Select the "Partition" tab.
    2. Go to the "Options" and choose "Apple Partition Map", which is the partition type necessary for PowerPC Macs.
    B) Carbon Copy Cloner - Red Dot Warning on main screen: "The target volume will not boot this computer because PowerPC Macintoshes cannot boot from USB devices."
Looks like I'll have to install the 2.5" SATA drive into my PowerPC MacMini to upgrade my system volume from 80gb to 320gb.

  • Not enough space on disk to restore !

    can anyone help me ?
I had some troubles with my mac so I made an image for the HD and every thing went fine and now when I want to restore it ,it says
Not enough space on /dev/disk0s2 to restore what should I do !!?

I may be too late now (but for sake of knowing the next time):
Before you make an image, re-size the source partition to a size smaller than the new (future) destination.
       - click on the source partition,
       - go to the Partition tab at the top,
       - then grab the handle in the lower right of the Partition Layout graph and drag it upwards.
The size of the partition will change, but the partition won't be erased.
    - BE PATIENT - this can be as slow as defragmenting the drive! [guess]
            * Your computer will go into Sleep Mode every 10 mintues. Hit a modifier key - (SHIFT, CMD, CNTRL) -
every 8 or 9 minutes to keep the computer from going into sleep mode.
            * Use your mouse to place the curser (every so often) in the progress bar to mark your progress.
    Then make a new Image.
           * Remember to "Scan Image for Restore" (in the Image menu) before proceeding.
If its too late because the original partition is gone, try temporarily restoring your image to an external (as large or larger) drive. [CAUTION! Everything on that external drive will be replaced!!]
Then re-size and create a new image - to be restored on your intended destination.
(Give this image a new name just in case)
IF YOU GET THE "Could not restore - resource busy" error:
       - First drage the destination partition (not the drive) into the destination field
       - THEN select the source image.

  • Restore Failure - not enough space!

    Hi all,
I just used Disk Utility to make a backup of a MBA (65GB) onto a 500GB external drive (Restore from internal HDD to external HDD). I then reformatted the internal hard disk and proceeded to restore my backup (external HDD to internal HDD). I soon received an error message stating "Restore Failure - not enough space". I guess that means Disk Utility backups are a one-way operation, since you can't restore from a larger drive to a smaller one? Is there something I am overlooking? I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the job, but I'm wondering how (if?) restoring from a larger backup drive is possible using Disk Utility?

Another way of dealing with the problem would be to install OS X and then transfer the data in Setup Assistant.

  • Time machine won't back up since I have restored from time machine following hard drive replacement.  I am being told there is not enough space, however the back up is less than the hard drive size

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme.  Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully.  SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups.  We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it.  It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available.  The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one.  It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do.  I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responses

Hi, I never use TM myself.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?
    http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

Can't imaging something not being covered there.
PS. It's generally recommended a TM drive be at least twice the size of your main drive.

  • The operation could not be completed because there is not enough space on the destination disk

I have 124Gig of space left on my HD, when I try to export my movie i get this error "The operation could not be completed because there is not enough space on the destination disk"  I have read some of the threads went in and deleted the iMovie Preference file but no luck.. any Ideas?  Thanks!

You need the System DVDs that originally came w/the computer in order to troubleshoot.  All Macs prior to & including ML came w/System DVDs.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html  Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • HT4946 cannot find itunes backup on my PC (win xp). want to move over to external hard drive to restore from backup bc PC not enough space

i just restored my ipad2 to iOS 6.1.3 yesterday. i have been trying to restore from backup, but i keep getting error messages from itunes (running latest version of itunes) that says there is not enough space to save the backup on the computer. i have tried clearing up as much space on my PC (windows xp), but there is still not enough room. and ive tried disk cleanup on my computer and resetting the ipad and running it through recovery mode (as some articles sugggested it would help with restoring after failed attempts). i read on another question in the apple support discussions that someone just moved his whole backup folder into his external harddrive and then he was able to restore from backup.
the backup is definitely saved on my computer (itunes confirms that), and the backup folder is supposed to be here  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\, but im still not finding it with that file path. i get as far as "username" and then i dont see "application data" and so on. but when i try searching that file path in google chrome, i find it and i see it, but its strange that i cant find it in the "docs and settings" folder in my C drive.
please help! i just want to be able to move the backup folder to my external to restore from backup. thank you in advance!!

Thank you! I was able to find it. Im sorry, i have a few follow up questions. Does the iTunes have to be running from my external as well to do the restore from backup? And if so, how do I move iTunes to external and run it from there? Also, I just copied over the "backup" folder (last part of that file path to my external, is that enough, or did I have to copy it starting from the beginning (docs and settings and so forth)? Lastly, when I select restore from backup in iTunes, would it automatically know that it's the copy on my external to restore backup from? Or do I have to delete or do something with the original file path in my computer?
    Thank you!

You need to discard or save to an external disk and then discard some of the stuff we all tend to keep forever (movies, music, pictures, docs, apps no longer used, etc.). A clogged up disk also does not function ideally either.

  • Can't restore from backup because not enough space on iphone? huh?

I am trying to simply restore my iphone from a backup on my laptop because I accidentally deleted an app of mine with important data.  When I go to restore the iphone though from a backup it tells me that it can't restore b/c not enough space on iphone.  I don't see how that makes sense since if it's a backup from the same iphone I'm using, how can there ever not be enough space to restore it?  I've also already searched other peoples problems and my hard disk has plenty of space on it where itunes and the backups are installed.  I've tried moving the temp and tmp folders but that didn't do anything.

I restored to an older backup which seemed to go through but now when I then try to restore to a newer backup it says on the phone "restore complete" and then it gives me same error message on computer.  When I look at phone it seems to have restored my notes and contacts, but not my SMS or my calendar.

I changed my LCD last day and now i noticed all my pictures on my phone are gone. I tried to restore the back that I got yesterday but it wont let me because its telling me there is not enough space on my phone!!! That's wierd because I didn't download any app or anything else since my last backup and on the other hand about 3000 pictures are gone, how come there is not enough space left! I also check my usage on my phone and it shows that i have about 7.0 GB pictures!!! BUT my photos is empty! I want my picture back on my phone any solution anyone?

  • I have backed up my ipad to my laptop prior to updating to the latest IOS and now I want to restore the backup back onto the ipad but it says there is not enough space? I have tried unticking all apps i no longer need, music etc but this still doesnt work

I have updated up my ipad2 which had the original version on it (4.??) to the latest version of IOS. Before I did this I backed up the ipad to my laptop so I wouldnt lose precious pics and videos of my baby boy.  Now that the latest version is on the ipad it is now asking me if I want to start as a new ipad or restore my backup from itunes.  So i select restore my backup from itunes and connect to itunes but it now says there is not enough space to do so.  I have a feeling it is because there are alot of pics on our ipad which i presume are all in this backup, many of which we do not need on the ipad anymore but I have no idea on how I go about deleting these pics??  And how do I find where on my laptop this backup is and most importantly the video and pics of my baby boy.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.
