Disk Utility's Checksum has no MD5/SHA1 options

Hi Folks
Some one actually asked the same question here four years ago but no direct solution found.
For me, I did see a screenshot here showing more options available under the DU's Checksum menu though I cannot determine the version of that DU and OS X.
Is there anyone here having the same issue? How could we bring the more options back?
BTW, I know the command-link solutions using MD5 and SHASUM, but I do perfer using GUI based DU.
Thanks,
B

Update:
I called Apple Care regarding this and the Apple support kindly told that this feature has been removed from the latest version of OS X.
I didn't believe this. Therefore, I kept googling this and finally found the solution below. I don't know how to say how good the Apple Care support was.
Solution:
1. Close Disk Utility
2. Open Terminal and run the following command line.
     defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility advanced-image-options 1
3. Open Disk Utility, and you will see 11 more options under the Images | Checksum menu!

  • Disk Utility says HD, "needs to be repaired" Options?

Using Disk Utility to Repair Permissions has worked fine, but when I "Verify Disk" I get this:
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit" among other text. It says that our HD "needs to be repaired".
How do I do this best? What do you all recommend?
Is Disk Warrior the only/best option?
Is there another app that I should use first?
Is there a free option, using a built-in utility?

On an intel mac you cannot run OS 9 or classic so there is no need to worry about OS 9.
If you have the same problem and Disk Utility cannot repair the drive and you decide to do a reinstall you can either do a archive and install, which would not remove your old data and files but would just replace the system with a new one. Chances are that will not fix a problem with the disk directory.
If you want to reformat the drive and reinstall the everything will have to be reinstalled from scratch as it will all be erased. You system restore disk can be used for this and then any third party apps you have will have to be reinstalled.
Before doing either, I would recommend that you do a complete backup to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper or some other backup application.

  • Problem to burn iso image with disk utility

    hi,
i burnt an iso image file on a cd using disk utility.
I checked the md5 of the burn, and found it is different than the original iso file.
how do i create an EXACT iso image burn?
    more details:
i downloaded file.iso from the web, inserted a blank CD, opened disk utility, chose "burn", then located the image, and confirmed.
after the disk utility announced "success", i wanted to check that the md5 of the burnt cd matches the original. so i used "dd if=/dev/disk1 of=~/file.dd" but i got a completely different file than the original file.iso...
not only that the md5 not match (which could be due to some extra 0 bytes), but i even compared the two files using xxd, and they look similar, but every now and then file.dd (=copy of the brunt CD) has a extra chunk of garbage bytes (and then the files are again the same, and then another chunk of garbage, etc.)
so how do i create a 1:1 burn of file.iso?

The problem here is that most Mac disc utilities, including the built-in Disk Utility, take a different approach when it comes to image burning. Instead of telling the program you want to burn an image, then choosing the file, you're supposed to do the reverse: You choose the file, then tell the program you want to burn it. So, to burn an ISO image to disc, here's what to do:
    1.Insert a blank disc.
    2.Start Disk Utility.
3.From the File menu, choose Open Disk Image and select the ISO to be burned.
4.In the list of volumes, you will now see an item representing the ISO file.
    5.Select it.
6.Click the Burn button and follow the instructions.

  • Disk Utility erase tab for hard disk is missing after accidental OS deletion when installing Win 8.1 (BootCamp)

    Hi there everyone,
This is my first post and I hope I can get this issue resolved with your help .
So the issue that I am having is that my Disk Utility is not showing giving me the option to reformat my entire hard drive.
The reason I want to this is because my Boot Camp Assistant won't partition my drive. This error comes up:
So after looking through the internet and forums i couldn't resolve this Boot Camp issue. So I decided to try and just wipe out my whole disk but as you can see I am unable to do that.
Prior to this issue, I had tried to download Windows 8.1 using a bootable USB stick and have accidentally deleted my Macintosh HD partition from the Windows install menu by opening up a terminal (fn+option+F10 was the key used to open up this terminal if I remember correctly).  I was pretty upset about that, thankfully I have a backup around. Not knowing what to do I proceeded to installing Windows 8.1 anyway. Half way through the installation there was an error which I did not record. I simply exited the installer and proceeded to the Recovery System start up menu and it installed a version of OS X Lion from the internet. Then I installed Yosemite thinking everything is OK.
I decided to try to install Windows 7 now and the issue mentioned at the beginning ensued. Previously there was a disk0s1 and disk0s2 that can be seen from the Disk Utility but I could delete one of them. The other one I could only erase but could not delete the partition itself. From terminal i determined these two partitions were from the previous Windows installation attempt. The size was relatively small for both.
I ran a disk repair for the Macintosh HD volume and this error pops up:
I am using MacBook Pro (15-inch, early 2011) with:
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

  • Stuck at "starting login window" and Disk Utility won't fix it...

I downloaded some security updates, and since restarting my computer as required, I have never been able to start it up since. It gets stuck on the "starting login window" screen, with the little blue bar still shimmering and mouse still moving, but just won't ever load the login screen, even after hours.
I've seen a few other people have had this problem, and tried to follow some of the recommendations, with no joy. I tried several times to repair the disk permissions with Disk Utility, but it has an internal error saying it lost the connection to the disk manager, or something similar.... when I try to repair the disk, it fails saying something about "overlapped extent allocations" and an "invalid node structure".
I can start up in single-user mode, and doing a fsck had the same result.
What can I do??? Some people suggested an Archive and Install manoeuvre, but I'm scared of losing all my files! Will it erase them all? Do I have to back up all my files before doing this? How can I back them up if my computer won't start?
I know almost nothing about computers - all I know I have found in the past few days searching through these discussion boards trying to find an answer! I have an important essay due on Monday which is stuck in my computer, so I'm a little scared!
I'm using Mac OS X Panther or something.... not sure how to find out exactly which one, as my computer won't start!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    iBook G4

Hi, you have some serious directory damage there, and it was probably there before the updates. An Archive and Install would not be recommended. If you did that you would likely have more problems then you have right now.
If it were me I'd run Diskwarrior and Tech Tool Pro on it. DW for the invalid node structure and Tech Tool Pro for the Overlapped Extent Allocation. But you probably would have to buy both of them, and there's no guarantee either one will fix it.
Apple doc.#25770, talking about Overlap..... says the easiest way to fix it is to Erase and Install. If you are running 10.3.9 and had access to a retail Tiger disk, you could try booting up on it and running Disk Utility. Tigers DU has the ability to fix Overlap.... sometimes, Panther's does'nt.
This is the best way to Erase and Install. First backup all your important stuff, if you can, as the following will erase everything on your drive; it will be unrecoverable. Put your install disk in your Mac and Restart while holding down the C key. In Tiger, When you get to the install screen, don't click install and go to the title bar at the top of the screen and click on Utilities (in earlier OS's click on the installer menu).
Click on Disk Utility and choose the hard drive you want your OS on. Then click on the Erase tab. In Tiger, click on the Security Options button near the bottom (it's similiar for Panther and Jaguar).
Once in there choose Zero Out Data (write zero's in earlier versions). This will map out any bad blocks on your drive and bring it back to almost new condition (providing there's nothing wrong mechanically with it, bad bearings, defective or damaged surface, etc.).
Once this is done, go back to the install screen and begin the "Erase and Install" installation. This will put a factory fresh system on a clean hard drive.
    Cheers!

  • External Hard Drive not in finder, but in Disk Utility, info gone? recover?

My external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. Usually, in disk utility, there will be visible the model/make of the hard drive (such as 232.8 GB MDT MD25...etc), and then below that, there be the actual name of the hard drive that I gave it (such as Jack's External Hard Drive). In disk utility, it only has the first one (the MDT... name) and not the other.
How do I fix this situation? Is my hard drive dead? I don't think it is dead because I can hear it spinning and it shows up partially in disk utility. Oh and by the way, it doesn't give me the option of repairing the disk.
    Thanks

Alright, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. The screeching noise is gone. Disk Utility sees the same "232.9 GB MDT MD25..." stuff, but now also "sees" "ROCK" which is the name I named the hard drive. But the lettering in "ROCK" is gray, not black. Also, its not showing up in finder. When I start up the computer with the ROCK hard drive on, finder says something like, "The disk you have connected was not readable by this computer." I try to verify disk in Disk Utility but it says "Disk Utility Stopped Verifying ROCK because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
So buying the enclosure, helped, but it seems the hard drive is damaged or the information is corrupt or something.
What is the problem I am having? (Is it not mounting or is the data bad or whats going on?)
Is there something I can do right now that can make this all better?
My last resort will be to try data recovering software (last resort because it costs around $100).
Thanks for all your help so far everyone.

  • Disk Utility not functioning properly, unable to format disks

Installed Mountain Lion last week and am now trying to format a flash drive, but Disk Utility no longer has the ability to do anything at all.  I can open it and look at my disks, but that's all I can do.  All functions have essentially been locked out.  Help!

  • My new HD with a cloned system and apps won't boot the G5 when installed. The clone drive is being journal formatted via usb with OS9 checked in disk utility. First time around, I didn't check OS9, and the G5 didn't boot from the clone drive. Advice?

My system is a G5 PPC with 2x 2Gig 64bit processors (dual core). 6 gig of ram on board, running OSX 10.4.11. I recently discovered the main drive was actually a laptop drive someone had stuffed in there! (The machine was given to me - yes, really). So I bought a nice new WD Caviar Black 500Gig HD. Hooked it up via usb adapter (G5 won't see it internally). Disk Utility saw it, formatted it with Journal option selected, but not OS9 install.
After that, I cloned the data on the slow laptop drive complete with all the applications onto the Caviar HD.Sure enough, the G5 can see the Caviar HD with everything on it.
However, when putting the Caviar HD in where the laptop drive once was, the G5 would not see the disk at all.
So now, I'm reformatting the drive again but this time with OS9 checkbox ticked in Disk Utility. After this, I will install it into the machine alongside the offensively sluggish laptop drive, and as long as the G5 sees the Caviar HD internally, I will clone from there, rather than via USB hookup.
I hope this way the system will speed up! There's no way the machine is running as it can do with a pokey little laptop drive in it spinning at 5k surely!
I am assuming the Tiger 10.4.11 is genuine (I think it is - the X symbol is present on the folder), but I don't have the original disk...
Any suggestions? Has anyone had this experience?

Hi BDAqua... downstairs away from unit at the moment. It's a Western Digital Caviar Black 500Gig, twin processors, SATA3 / 6, 64Meg cache on-board... nice. Very quite with minimal vibration (slight).
However as I'm here I can announce I've solved the problem! The G5 had an original Seagate Barracuda HDD on board as a slave drive. I backed up the dat off that onto the Caviar Black via USB adapter. Then Disk Utility wiped the Barracuda safely.
Then, I installed SuperDuper! to clone the data from the sluggish laptop master drive onto the Barracuda; I also told SuperDuper! to boot the G5 from the newly image Barracuda.
After it had done the job I switched off the machine (it may well have rebooted - I was downstairs watching England fail at Eurovision Song Contest), took out the laptop drive and started up the G5.
Mercifully, it rebooted fine! All details and programs are intact and functioning right down to my screensaver.
I can report that the machine is noticably (considerably in the case of Logic8 and JamPack) faster and swifter at sourcing data.
Everything is backed up and I now have a speedier G5! Hurrah!!
I now have a spare 80Gig drive to hand in a caddy (originally a spare backup) that was made about the same time as the G5. It's my guess that it would fit the G5 internally and probably be seen ok by the system.
It's worth a try. The Caviar Black will have to go into a caddy and become my backup disk. It has a clone of the OS and all apps, so if something goes badly wrong, I'm safe.
Just a thought: The more advanced Leopard and Snow Leopard OS may struggle in G5's because the OS itself may require faster HDD's that cannot go into the G5 normally? I see many reports of Snow Leopard running like a bag of bones in people's G5's. Perhaps it's something to do with data retrieval speeds?
    I'm sticking with Tiger!
I hope this story has assisted someone somewhere... and many thanks to all you kind people who offer to help.

  • Reported Fatal Hardware Error to Disk Utility

I see the following message in my Power Book G4 Disk Utility:
"This drive has Reported Fatal Hardware Error to Disk Utility. If drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a new drive."
I already made a back up my Home folder to my external HD. The install disk utility reports the same and has grey the repair uptions.
The spinning beachball appears constantly when using Safari and iTunes. What should I do?

If your Mac is no longer under the standard 1-yr warranty period or under the 3-yr extended warranty if you purchased the AppleCare extended warranty for your PB, you need to purchase a new internal hard drive that is compatible with your Mac model. This is something you can install yourself or take your Mac to an Apple authorized repair facility to purchase and have a new internal hard drive installed.
The repair facility should include re-installing whichever OX version and all software that was pre-installed and shipped with this Mac when purchased new. If this wasn't Tiger and you purchased a Tiger retail install package, you can re-install the Tiger upgrade yourself and then replace all data from your backup on the new hard drive.

  • Problems with the CS6 Master Collection disk image (invalid checksum)

I have problems downloading the trial for CS6 Master Collection for MacOS X.
I've tried downloading using the Download Assistant, both as a privileged and an unprivileged user, and have also tried the direct download as both privileged and unprivileged. Each time I've waited until the download was complete before trying to install, but every time the disk image fails to open, complaining of an "invalid checksum".
I've tried mounting the disk image without validating the checksum, but while I can then run the installer, the installation fails due to lack of privileges – again, this is regardsless of user privileges. I've also tried deleting the preferences and cache-files for Download Assistant, but to no avail.
Can anyone confirm that the english version of the CS6 Master Collecion disk image is working and can be mounted without error on MacOS X 10.7? I have now downloaded and re-downloaded the disk image at least eight times, and while I have a fast Internet-connection, this is getting tedious.

I just downloaded the DMG from Adobe.com using the trial and it mounts fine. I was able to start the installation.
I did not get a checksum error or any other error.
However, I found these instructions in another thread:http://forums.adobe.com/message/4370247#4370247
    <quote>
If the download is completed in the Adobe Download Assistant you can temporarily turn off the feature to verify the checksum.  The following steps will allow you to temporarily disable this feature:
Open the Disk Utility located in Applications/Utilities
Go under the Disk Utility menu and select preferences
Deselect the option to verify checksums
    Try mounting your DMG file
I would recommend turning this feature back on though after the installation is complete.  Also if you notice this happening on additional files it can indicate a problem with your Internet connection.
    </quote>
Could you try these steps and let us know if you were able to proceed.

  • Disk Utility - Partition free space?

    Hi all
I'm wondering if Disk Utility (or similar) has the functionality to help me out here...
I have a 120gig fw external drive, currently it has only the one partition of 80gigs on it, the rest is free space (don't ask...).
I would like to format the other 31gigs as a useable partition without erasing the 50-odd gigs of music files that are on the first volume.
If this can't be done, that's really no big issue, I'll just use my iPod as a holding space while I repartition the external, but if it can, then this will be a valuable learning opportunity for me & I'll be happy to know the way around.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Dr_Dodgy,
You cannot do that with Disk Utility.
There is a third-party application for partitioning a hard drive without losing anything, so I guess this app would be able to do that too.
Not sure, was it "iPartition"? I don't know it anyway, so I can say for sure only about DU.

  • Disk Utility 13 cannot create multi-session CDs

With Mavericks/ Disk Utility 13 on a new MBP, the option to leave a disk appendable is always greyed out, on all the CD disks I have tried, including new ones of various national brands.
On an older imac, runnng Snow Leopard and Disk Utility 11.5, following the same procedure, the identical disks are appendable. The older imac has an internal superdive. The MBP has a new external Apple Superdrive.
Mavericks/Disk Utility will create the .dmg, but after clicking burn, there is no multi-session option available...it's there, but always greyed out.
    Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks for the reply. Interesting discussion. I really hadn't gone that far with rationalising my mild frustration. I guess the sources of funding that require cd roms will have to catch up then. Fact is they all use Microsoft Windows and havn't risen to dropbox or icloud.
Will try third party burner or just ruin more disks.
    Cheers to you

  • Disk Utility: Disk Scrubbing ("Erase Free Space")

    Hi,

    Hey,
Talked with Apple in Texas, Indiana and Silicon Valley on this one
    as well Josh...
The bottom line executed so far is:
    Shutdown Mac OS X
    mount -uw
    /usr/sbin/fsck -fy
    shutdown -r now
    Finder
    Disk Utility
    Erase / Erase Freespace
Select least secure option and run
Wait until Disk Utility is final (no timing messages)
The above completed okay and your advice to "wait it out"
    was right on the ball.
Next, I need to do Erase / Erase Freespace 7-Pass overnight
    and then a 35-Pass tomorrow.
The reason I want to do all this heavy "assurance" of deleting
is that if I am required to send this notebook back for the cpu
fan issue, then I certainly want privacy for my disk. But on second
thought, upon receipt, I could just go to the local Apple store and
swap out the disk from one and place it in the new frame and
    bootup, retaining my data.
Anyway, thanks for your input today as well as Richard in Indiana,
Matt in Texas, Matt in Silicon Valley.
(There were no errors in the fsck btw though it did say the FS was
    modified... odd.)

with Empty Trash btw. I don't think those are assured from undelete
by savvy wizards or other operatives... whereas, 35-pass certainly is
completely secure, assuming the implementation at Apple doesn't
have a backdoor of some kind...
I'll keep this thread updated after the 7-pass / 35-pass which I am
sure just requires extra patience, as you indicated. Thanks!
