  • External hard drive seen in Disk Utility, but will not mount.

My external hard drive has power and is spinning, but will not mount.  It was fine yesterday.  It shows up in Disk Utility and is verified and repaired.  Tried the drive on 2 other macs with same result.  Tried a new enclosure and that did not work.  Tried all ports...usb and firewire.  Any way to save my data?
I have screen shot of the partition info from Disk Utility for the hard drive included:

  • How do I access an external hard drive that shows up in Disk Utility but will not show up in finder or on my desktop?

I have an external hard drive that just stopped showing up one day. Is there a solution to this problem that allows me to secure the data on the drive before reformatting?

I'm having the same problem bpay14, but with a CalDigit VR2 6TB RAID0 external hard drive.
One day it was showing on my desktop, the other it wasn't. And I still didn't update my Mavericks to 10.9.3 (still with the 10.9.2).
It shows up in the disk utility, and I can even Verify the disk and Repair it (but I don't wanna start repairing
something that probably doesn't need to be repaired, so I haven't clicked the Repaid button, only the Verify button) and it says its working just fine.
But it doesn't show in the Finder or the desktop for that matter.
And even if I force disconnect the cable, I get the usual "this disk was not ejected properly" notification
presumingly the disk was mounted on the desktop and I forced eject by unppluging it...
I found a way to force open the disk, through Disk Utility that's by clicking with the right mouse button
on the disk icon, and chosing OPEN "CalDigit AFRICA 6TB"... (see picture 1)
But... after that, it open a Finder window showing all my internal and external drives, but that drive's
name is in washed grey, like if it was unmounted (see picture 2).
When selected, I can see everything and work normally on the harddrive, even opening FCPROX projects or Libraries, copying from it and writing documents into it... just normal... (see picture 3)
BUT IT DOES NOT SHOW IN THE DESKTOP...
    that's my problem...
I even did a Command+i for Info on the hard drive. (see picture 4)
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
    I would be eternally grateful!
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Cheers!

  • Disk Utility App will not open

Attempting to initialize new Lacie External Hard drive and/or if I wish to fix Premissions, opening the disk utility does not complete its disk gathering info, thus recycling. I left it on for days, no completion.
Could this be due to not enough RAM?

Possibly if you had less than 256 and had Classic open at the same time.
If this Mac is the one with 512 in your tag-line, you should look elsewhere for the source of the problem.
There is a guaranteed-good version of Disk Utilities on the install CD, hidden on the menus inside the installer program. You boot from the CD (with XPostFacto if required for your set-up) and rather than choosing English as the default language, choose Disk Utility off the menus.

  • Permission repair will not repair

    Folks....
A few weeks ago, I noticed that running permission repair from the HD I have booted from will not repair permissions. I have pages and pages of un repaired permissions. I booted to my Leopard DVD and ran permission repair from it and have the same issue.
I ran disk repair from the Leopard DVD and it said my HD was fine.
Suggestions? Maybe a 3rd party software package? Any shareware/freeware I might try first. I would hate to spend the money on Tech Tools Pro if it would not fix it. I started getting squirrely things happening, and freeze ups. But other then bad permissions, I can not find any thing wrong.
    Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

OK, Here is what I see when I try to do permission repairs. I am happy to hear you say some are not so bad. In the past, the OS fixed all of them. I was taught to run permission repair after each now software install. Maybe that is not correct?

Hi, I have the following message when opening iPhoto:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions.
I select repair, enter my password and I get the following:
The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.
This happened a few weeks ago and I have been fumbelling around trying to fix it. I have no backup servers or shared access. My iPhone and iPad 'used to' pump pictures via iCloud but this has stopped.
I am adminstrator with open & edit rights.

    PLEASE HELP!

Similar problem but not quiet the same:
Please bear with me as I am very new to this subject.
1: Using a MacBook Air OSX 10.7.5 and it is WiFi connected to a Time Capsule.
2: Overnight I have done a complete back-up. Checked the data files and all correct.
3: I can open the files on the TC except for the iPhoto Library as I want to check visually that they are there. All 2,388.
4: The iPhone Library on the TC will not allow me to look in.
5: the iPhoto Library on the MBA allows me access and I can view etc all the 2,388.
Q1: So why can I not look into the TC's iPhone Library? Or how do I open that library so I can look in?
Q2: how can I export data back from the TC to the MBA if ever I needed to do that?
Thanks for helping out a virgin in these matters.

os x could not be installed on Mac book pro because storage system verify or repair failed.
When i open disk utility HDD does not let me repair.

In order to repair the system disk you must boot from another disk drive. The operating system will not allow the disk drive it is running from to be repaired.
Book the MBP and create a bootable clone on an external disk drive. Then boot from the external disk drive and repair the system disk drive from there.

Boot your computer into Safe Mode usually by tapping the F8 key at boot.  Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
From there type  rstrui.exe and select a Restore Point prior to the time the problem started.
If unable, you will have to perform a Factory Restore.

  • After downloading Yosemite and the newest iPhoto, I get the message "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it."  iPhoto will not even open

Just downloaded OSX10.10 - Yosemite.  iPhoto said it needed to be updated, which I did.  Upon trying to boot up iPhoto, I received the following message:   "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it."  iPhoto will not even open

I'm a bit of a noob but this worked - I right-clicked iPhoto and chose the top option "iPhoto Library". I didn't note the message that appeared, but it was something like
telling me I needed to upgrade iPhoto Library for it to work with my new version of iPhoto
cautioned me that it could take a while, and
once I upgraded it couldn't revert back to an earlier version.
So - I asked it to upgrade, it did, and once it finished iPhoto opened and now works!
I suppose why we could wonder why it wasn't included or mentioned in the original iPhoto upgrade, but this was probably more character-forming...

  • MacBook Pro HD found corrupt, but will not repair or mount. Need to rescue data.

    Hi,
My wife has a MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012 (non-retina) with a 500 GB APPLE HDD. It runs Mavericks.
It shuts down during boot (gets to around 30 % of the progress bar then dies). It will not launch in safe mode either.
I created a bootable USB with Yosemite on it and managed to get into Disk Utility that way.
Verify Disk says that the disk is corrupt (see below for full error list). Repair Disk stops midway and says it can't repair it, and that I have to backup my files and reformat the disk.
However, the disk will not mount!
Do any of you have any tips on how to access the data on the HD?
My wife latest TimeCapsule-backup is from June(!) and all her photos since then are only stored locally on the HD...
    Thanks,
    Steve
    PS:
    Verify Disk returns the following:
    "Missing thread record (id= xxx)"
    "Incorrect number of thread records"
    "Invalid leaf record count"
    "Invalid volume file count"
    "Incorrect number of extended attributes"
"Incorrect number of Access Control Lists"
    "Overlapped extent allocation (id= xxx)"
"Volume bitmap needs minor repair for under-allocation"
    "Invalid volume free block count"
    "Volume header needs minor repair"
"The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to to be repaired"
    Repair Disk returns the following:
"File system check exit code is 8"
"Updating boot support partitions for the volume as requested. Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

    Hi Csound1,
    Thanks for replying.
Should I boot into Internet Recovery Mode with the Yosemite-USB plugged into the MacBook or not?
I tried both; with the USB plugged in I get the same results as in my post above (will neither repair nor mount), without the USB plugged in it will not repair either.
Repair Disk returns the following (in both cases):
    "Checking file system"
    "Volume repair complete"
"Updating boot support patrons for the volume as required"
"Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your back-up files."
Then it gives me a pop-up dialogue box with that last sentence again.
Could you please give me some more detailed instructions on how to troubleshoot this problem?
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • OSX Lion Disk Utility won't verify/repair RAID volumes

SInce I upgraded to Lion (now at 10.7.4) I can't use the Disk utility to verify or repair the disk catalog (disk first Aid) on apple soft RAID volumes. These volumes were created in 10.6 use the Apple RAID feature of disk utility.
I have one striped and one concatenated volume - neither will work. Press the button and the progress bar flashes for a fraction of a second, then nothing. no error, no message in the window - just no repsonse. Works fine on non raid volumes in the same disk enclosure -Firmtek Seritek/5PM, with seritek 2ME4-E sata card.
Not sure I really want to recreate and recopy the drives....
Any ideas? Seaches haven't turned up this specific issue.

A quick search in these forums for permissions or *permissions problem* reveals many posts the past four months.
In a nutshell, repairing permissions w/Leopard takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes, depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/Receipts/bom/. The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard. The stalled progress bar is an unresolved bug (they haven't figured out how to make it work whilst it's checking or rebuilding the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/. To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window, select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that are being read and checked against the current a.receiptdb file. That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar. Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the permissions are being checked and repaired. Also note, that you won't get any *they were repaired* message back for any that are noted to be incorrect.

  • Disk Utility unable to Verify/Repair Permissions since this week's update

Hey there folks- I am experiencing some software problems with certain apps not launching (I understand it is an issue with QT now but am not clear on how to revert... Help?) and naturally panicked a bit.
I went into Disk Utility and tried to Repair Permissions.
Starts checking and then claims to lose connection and that I need to quit it and relaunch. This, of course, tells me that I am about to corrupt the disk and will "pay" for it (not seriously but feels like it!).
Anyone know what I can do to fix this as I really cannot, this minute, afford to reformat as I am working flat out with the machine.
So- review- unable to repair permissions and sometimes the machine runs slower than usual on the net as well as no longer launching some applications. Missing a few too but I can live with that!
    Any help VERY gratefully received.

Oh dear lady upstairs! Sorry to not have responded sooner- I never got the message that you had answered me... Bit odd that!
OK- thanks for that. I do so like understanding what I am doing and, more importantly- WHY!
Will do and let you know if that sorts matters...
As for QT- I hear tell that it can interfere with the running of applications and I certainly had a lot more than just Disk Utility fail on me. Stuff APPEARS to launch and then just stops after a few bounces of the icon on the dock.
Of course that TOO began only after the update.
I have to say- if it weren't for your calming influence I'd have freaked by now. I mean- how can we trust the updates if they cause such agro?!
    LOL!
