Disk Utility Says System RAID Degraded - Does this mean what I think it is?

Hi All
I have a Mirrored RAID Set for my System Drive - being two 931.5 GB Hitachi Drives. This Mirrored RAID Set I have called System RAID. If I click on the RAID Slice in the Disk Utility it says that the "System RAID" is Degraded, and under this [tabbed in] it says 931.2 GB - RAID Slice (disk0s2) Failed with the other under that saying 931.2 GB - RAID Slice (disk1s2) with no comment it has failed [obviously].
So if this essentially means my the first drive in my RAID set has failed then I will lose all data if the second fails also, is this correct?
So what should my next step be? Should I shut down the machine until I can purchase a spare drive to replace the currently damaged one? AND most importantly, HOW do I replace the drive and have it rebuild as the new second drive without erasing / losing data - IE what is the protocol now??
Please your immediate assistance is GREATLY APPRECIATED!
OH and AHH I've just seen in System Profiler that a 2 GB RAM chip appears to have failed

What is going on!!

Hi Kappy<
I am trying to migrate user data from a RAID - 1 slice from my old PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 to my new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.4 by reading a mirror RAID slice from my old Mac that is mounted in an external drive enclosure and connected by FireWire.
The problem is that the new Mac cannot read the old Mac disk, it never shows up on the desktop, or comes up as available when trying to use Migration Assistant. Then, if I go into Disk Utility, the external RAID slice shows up briefly with a locked yellow padlock beside it, then I suddenly get the window shade of death, and have to hold down the power button to reset/restart my MacBook.
Why can my new computer not read my old computers disk, and how can I change permissions, or make the old drive readable by the new mac.
Regrettably I am away from the original Desktop, and cannot load the old drive back into it, connect the two machines and migrate that way. My only option for reaching my necessary data is to retrieve it off the drive I have with me.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Xserve RAID: Server Monitor says degraded, disk utility says mirror FAILED.

    Xserve Quad Intel 4x2GH
    4096 GB RAM
    OS X Server 10.4.11
Xserve RAID 7TB 14x 500 GB ADM via dual fiber channel, Mirrored, 3.5 TB array.
Flashing yellow indicator light on Xserve this morning. Investigated and found that RAID Admin says everything is OK, all 14 drives normal.
RAID Admin log says :"4000 1 Wed Apr 08 09:37:59 EDT 2009 Disk 2 Failed To Respond. Retrying. RETRY COUNT:0 LBA:0x1C700"
Under the RAID tab, Disk utility says: "Mirrored RAID Set: Degraded" and "Disc2s3: FAILED"
All LED's are solid green across the front of the ADMs.
Since all my drives are reporting OK, could this be a problem with the Fiber Channel interfaces?
Should I just backup (again), shut down and rebuild the mirror using Disk Utility?

Hello.. I am getting a screen when i turn my laptop on startup says OSX utilities....restore, reinstall osx  or disk utility....what does this mean?

Hi, that sounds like it's booting from a Restore partition, but that is only for 10.7 & up, you list 10.6.8 though.
Anyway, hold alt key at bootup, what boot choices are shown?

When I plug in my external LaCie drive I get an error message "the disc you inserted was not readable by this computer."

Disk Utility sees the disc but does not give a repair option.
    What can I do?

The good thing about mac-centric resellers such as OWC, is they have people on staff that can answer questions without you buying things first. They also have how-to information, and instructions are included in many of their products. I saw a link to watch a DIY video in one of their pages; an example of a RAID (with its own power supply) is shown on their drives page. Also a few in there, with no power supplies, for less money.
If I were looking to backup and perhaps also have a partition for a system clone, I'd consider something like one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Some ideas on the RAID backup methods appear in google search, some of the pages are ideas and concepts; and the better ones also warn about using RAID for the only backup plan.
Oh, OWC has live chat. Haven't tried it, nor have I bought anything from them. I have what appears to be two products from them, but have not used either. One is in a box as-new, but has only USB2.0 ports & my Macs needed FW400/800. It has been said their RAM is a good way to upgrade, too. But I can't confirm!
A 'RAID-ready' unit for backup may be more versatile for just that, but I have not checked into these details. I use single HDDs in powered enclosures, and usually manually make backup clones to FW drives, of bootable OS X systems. Some of the OWC raid-ready use eSATA ports so that may not be viable for a computer without them.
The unused in-box external drive I have is like the base model in the link above. However mine is USB2.0 (maybe) and won't boot my older Macs due to hardware variance; and my preference would be for FireWire options, these models do offer that. But the one I have does not. Dual 500GB HDDs, and they could be used in tandem as a RAID. That would be a choice set up in software. I'm not sure and not interested enough to read up just now.
    My backup method is not automatic, or a moving backup plan, if I don't get a move-on and make full system clones. I do make copies of photos and documents the manual way, to USB external drives; and occasionally backup to DVD or CD media. And USB flash, that helps to move files between computers without need to use file sharing via wi-fi. {Like Why fly? Walking is better exercise unless one is a bird. Squawk!}

Depending on the ports in your Mac, you may be able to use other cables to attach between a backup or externally enclosed hard disk drive with multiple partition and bootable clone in one of them. Not sure about the Thunderbolt, and where that is the main port, adapters are required to access other devices, as allowed.
Anyway, I am going on and on, yet not really saying anything.
My ideas would not be all that interesting to follow as a backup
plan when matching available newer hardware to task, but you
can get some into better ideas if you are not in a rush. Get a
good setup and then look into more an betterer stuff.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Disk Utility says of USB Drive - "This partition can't be modified" "This disk is not writeable and cannot be partitioned"

Several months ago I bought a 64GB PNY USB memory stick to transpord data quickly.
It seemed to work fine.  I could format it as a Mac partition and use it.  I hardly ever need
it so I just put it away.
Today I wanted to use it to put a file on and take it to the Kinko's/FedEx to print, and I
find I cannot mount it on any of my computers, iMac, MacMini or MacBookPro.
In Disk Utility virtually everything is greyed out.
Disk Utility says: "This partition can't be modified" "This disk is not writeable and cannot be partitioned"
If I try to mount it, it says "This disk cannot be mounted"
There is no physical read-only switch or setting on the disk that I can see and it is very small.
I has a Mac OS installed on it, so I wonder if that is a problem?  I should be able to write over that
or reformat it I would think.

    Thanks for these replies.
I've got regular time machine backups and just backed up some of my data by copying some key folders to an external drive.  I'm bit paranoid about backup integrity and would ideally like to do another full backup to a different drive using a system other than time machine, in the event that something goes wrong with the time machine backup.  Any recommendations on good and affordable backup software to do a backup of my TM backup?
One other question: I seem to encounter problems like this pretty frequently.  I'd say once a year or so, my drive fails completely or gets near enough to failing that I have to wipe and restore.  (I've never had a TM backup fail to work, though the last go around there were some hiccups which has led to my backup paranoia.)  I've had this happen on multiple computers, so I'm becoming pretty convinced that the problem lies somewhere in my data.  Is it possible (even likely) that there's something in my data causing this recurring problem?  If so, is there anything I might be able to do to try and pinpoint and address this problem?  I'd love to go one year without having to wipe/restore my machine!
For a while I thought I just had bad luck.  But I think this is like the 4th or 5th time this has happened in the past 4 years and every time, I'm restoring from a backup, so I come back with the same data.  It's the one constant since I've had 3 different machines over this same time period.

Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired. When I repaired "disk permission", this message was what came up. What does this mean, and how can I fix it?
The opperating system I am using is 10.7.4, and updating to the latest version currently. Computer is running fine, except that when I did some utility repairs, I got the warning above, and not really sure what do, in regards to repairing it correctly, not just getting the message off of my computer.

  • Disk utility says "RAID STATUS: Disk missing"?

When I boot up OS 10.3.9 there is error message "detected volume OS X cannot read - initialize, ignore or eject" - then it dissappears and the system drive behaves normally. But in disk utitlity it says "RAID STATUS: Disk missing".
The disk is not partitioned and it will not let me repair permissions. Any ideas?

Disk Utility monitors the status of the disks in a RAID set. If you see a message indicating that a disk is missing or has failed, try these troubleshooting steps:
If you are using a striped RAID set, delete the damaged RAID set. Your data may be lost. Be sure to back up your RAID sets and other data regularly.
If you are using a mirrored RAID set, there may have been an error writing data to the disk. Click Rebuild in the RAID pane of Disk Utility.
If a problem persists, replace the damaged disk and click Rebuild to rebuild the RAID set.
Use the First Aid pane to repair the RAID disk, then check the RAID set to see if it still reports an error. If the problem is still present, quit and reopen Disk Utility, select the RAID disk, and click RAID. Check the RAID set to see if it still reports an error. You may need to restart your computer.

It means that your machine does not meet the system requirements for InDesign.  Check the system requirements for InDesign against those of your machine to see where your machine comes up short.
