Disk Utility to Airport USB disk?

It looks like the answer is no, but I'm mildly surprised that Apple didn't make this more Apple-like
Just checking to see if one can do any "Disk Utility" type of access (Erase, repair, etc) to a USB HD off the AEBS (I have the gigabit version), or if you have to connect directly to your Mac for that.
Thanks,
Mike

You must connect the drive directly to your Mac to get those abilities.

You are in the typical catch22.. you cannot use the TC without setting it up.. you cannot set it up without Lion.. so you can install the latest utility.
Do you have any reasonably current iOS devices.. they can run the iOS version of the utility.. that will allow you to set up the TC.
Or invite a friend with a laptop running at least Lion
Or take the TC back and get a plain USB hard drive and backup to that.

  • Creating a desktop PC utility with an USB boot utility

Creating a desktop PC utility with an USB boot utility
    Hi everybody
when I looked for how create an Real-Time Desktop ETS I found two ways to do it:
    1. With USB create, here is the program: http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/lang/en/id/1369
    2. With Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)
With both, I been having trouble, but I could find an explanation of the error that comes up. This is the warning message that comes up: "Unable to find a USB drive. Make sure that it is connected to your computer." So I thought that the USB drive wasn't good, I changed the USB  and the same message keeps coming up. I looked for all the necesary requirements, and I have everything in order, the real time module, the CVI, and LabVIEW SP1, but I only have the evaluation version, I would like to check it first and look if it works OK.
    Here are the instructions:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9209361E17708D548625744A007FF353?OpenDocument
I hope that someone can help me. thanks.
"Everything that has a beginning has an end"

    Hey anfedres,
I went ahead and deactivated by labview and labview rt installs, and I was still able to format a USB drive just fine with both the utility and MAX. My suggestion would be to try switching out the USB drives again, the smaller the better. The utility is very small, so if you have any of those small flash drives that people give out at conferences/expos/etc, you may be better served by using that rather than a 16 GB drive. Some flash drives come with built in utilities that can cause problems, so the simpler the better. You might also completely format the usb drive using windows before using our utility. The flash drive I used was completely empty.
I also wanted to make sure that you were aware of the deployment license associated with the process you are attempting:
    http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/13753
Let me know how a different drive works out, and we can move forward from there.
    Thanks,

  • Can't see content of Airport USB drive.

    Just got my MacBook Air.
I have set up a USB drive on my AEBS, which I can access just fine via my old MacBook.
On my new MB Air, I can see the base station in the finder side bar. When selected I can see the name of the drive. When selected, I cannot see any files or folders on that drive. I can't read or write.
How should I set up the MB Air to allow full access to the Airport USB drive?
    -Ron.

I'm having the same issues. Random folders throughout the server are not displaying their content. I can see the contents of these folders in Tiger, just not leopard.
I'm connecting to a Windows 2003 Server with Service Pack 2 using SMB, not AFP like Taliesin above.

  • Airport Admin Utility Vs Airport Utility

It seems to me that the older “Airport Admin Utility” has been superseded by the “Airport Utility” that came with my 802.11n Airport Extreme.
Is there any need to retain the old one (for working on say Snow or Platinum Airports) or does the new version do everything the old one did.
On a related topic - Anyone know how to get the “Airport Utility” to automatically open in manual mode. It seems daft to start it, select the one you want to work on and then select “Manual Setup” (although you can also double click I guess).

From KB 75422, AirPort: Software compatibility table, note 5: The AirPort Utility will not configure the Graphite or Dual Ethernet Base Stations. Configuration of these base stations will require the appropriate versions of the AirPort Admin Utility and AirPort Setup Assistant.

  • AirPort Management Utility and AirPort Admin Utility

Is there a difference between AirPort Management Utility and Airport Admin Utility? I see that the Airport Management Utility has not been updated for a while while the Airport Admin Utility is more recent. Does the latter replace the former?
    Thanks!

Is there a difference between AirPort Management Utility and Airport Admin Utility?
Yes, the Management Utility gives you the ability to monitor some aspects of your Apple base station.
The AirPort Admin Utility allows you configure and control the Apple base station.
Does the latter replace the former?
    No

  • Airport Extreme with Airport USB Disk issues - Dont give up just yet...

Just a heads up for anyone who is having issues with accessing an Airport disk with the latest firmware.
After calling Apple support as i was convinced my AEBS was faulty, i have since discovered that if and HFS+ disk cannot be varified and repaired successfully in Disk Utility, it would lock up my AEBS totally. My wireless would drop out and nothing would work any longer untill I turned the power off and on again.
I was able to correct the issue with the USB HDD by booting with the Leopard CD and using Disk Utility in Mac OS X setup. Trying the same thing when booting from the Macbook HDD would result in a 'failed to unmount' error.
Before anyone has a fit and trys to return their AEBS with a similar issue i suggest trying the above or another USB HDD. It just might save you the $49 that i paid as a result of being out of the 90 days of support on my AEBS and Macbook.
FYI, contrary to the technical requirements i was sent by the Apple service agent i spoke with, my Airport Disk IS working with 2 partitions. 1 HFS+ and the other a Windows partiton (i cant remember if its FAT32 or NTFS. My HDD is at home)
I have a collegue at work who was having similar issues with a FAT32 USB HDD on his AEBS but we have just discovered that the HFS+ HDD that i used to test my AEBS with, worked fine on his also. We are yet to find out if his HDD is faulty at this stage. Ill keep you all posted on what we find.
SO, at this stage it would be resonable to say that the AEBS doesnt handle corrupted HDD's very well. (IE it totally locks up and the wireless drops out)

That used to be a problem on 7.2.x. Now 7.3.1 can fix some minor disk problems (such as disk not unmounted correctly).
Since I upgraded to 7.3.1, I haven't once taken my USB hard drive out to be repaired on my Mac.

  • Airport USB Disk - access from PC?

I have set up my USB disk in my Airport utility, trying all three options (accounts, disk password, and device password).  I cannot find it in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer to access it.
    What is the trick?
    Thanks,

There are a number of posts related to accessing AirPort Disks from Windows Vista / 7 PCs. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Using the airport usb disk with playstation3...

anyone know how i can get my PS3 to see the USB disk hooked up to my AE, and use it as a media share?
I have a wireless-n AE, with a 250GB USB drive hooked up, and also a WD Mybook world edition 1TB server on a ethernet connection.
all the macs in my house see the drives just fine, but everytime i search for a media share on the PS3, it says 'no media shares found'.
i'm sure its a PS3 issue, but i was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with it, as i'm a complete noob when it comes to networking.
    thanks.

    a) WEP WPA password, ive never set one up for the airport, where do i find out what this password is for my PC?
You will set up wireless security (WEP or WPA) on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX)..using the AirPort Admin Utility, which is part of AirPort for Windows.
    b) Everytime I run the Airport Express Assistant it gives me an error message saying "Windows is not the current network manager...please change Windows to the default", I dont know why I get this error and I assume windows is the one managing the networks I use.
Your PC has wireless capability...correct? The AirPort Setup Assistant requires a wireless connection to the AX.
    c) I can connect to the airport through windows, but when in the Airport Management Utility it does not detect the Airport
Connect your PC directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then run the AirPort Admin Utility to configure it.
    d) After all this, will Windows and iTunes allow you to stream music thru the Airport Express, like it does on my mac with itunes???
Yes, you will be able to stream iTunes from your PC to the AX, either wired or wirelessly.

  • Inconsistent Airport USB disk mounting patterns

I have two Airport Extreme networks -- one at home and one in my office at work. I access both networks with a MacBook. Fine so far.
I also have an Iomega USB disk attached to the APE at home and an identical disk attached to my APE at work. The disk at home mounts nicely on my desktop. However, the disk at school does not mount. Connection proceeds to the point where I type in the password, but it does not mount, and I get the volume "__" could not be mounted message. This message appears regardless of which user account I work.
So, the Airport disk mounts fine at home but does not mount at my office. I've spent several hours deleting preference files, mucking around with the Airport Utility, etc. No go. Restarting the APE at work sometimes gives short-lived success, but it does not seem to last.
    Any suggestions?

Okay, after reading several other discussion posts, the best workaround I've been able to find is to mount the Airport Disk through the Connect to Server menu. You'll need to know the IP address of your AirPort. It's probably either 10.0.1.1 or something like 192.168.0.1 -- you can find it by running AirPort Utility from the Utilities folder. Just click on your AirPort base station on the left side and the utility should say what the IP address of your base station is. (You can then quit AirPort Utility.)
Then press cmd-K, OR from the Finder click on the Go menu and then select Connect to Server...
In the "Server Address" box, type smb://AEBS-IP-adress/Volume-name
For example, in my setup, I connect to smb://10.0.1.1/Iomega because my AirPort Extreme Base Station has an IP address of 10.0.1.1 and the name of the drive I have connected to my AEBS is called "Iomega" The volume should now mount and show up in the Toolbar of any Finder window. It does NOT show up as a separate volume on my desktop, but your mileage may vary.
This has worked for me each time I've tried it and is much more reliable than trying to select my AEBS from the "Shared" option in the Toolbar of the Finder window.
BTW: If you will be doing this regularly, you may want to go back to the Connect to Server menu and click the + button to add it as one of your favorite servers.

  • Disk Utility says of USB Drive - "This partition can't be modified" "This disk is not writeable and cannot be partitioned"

Several months ago I bought a 64GB PNY USB memory stick to transpord data quickly.
It seemed to work fine.  I could format it as a Mac partition and use it.  I hardly ever need
it so I just put it away.
Today I wanted to use it to put a file on and take it to the Kinko's/FedEx to print, and I
find I cannot mount it on any of my computers, iMac, MacMini or MacBookPro.
In Disk Utility virtually everything is greyed out.
Disk Utility says: "This partition can't be modified" "This disk is not writeable and cannot be partitioned"
If I try to mount it, it says "This disk cannot be mounted"
There is no physical read-only switch or setting on the disk that I can see and it is very small.
I has a Mac OS installed on it, so I wonder if that is a problem?  I should be able to write over that
or reformat it I would think.

    Thanks for these replies.
I've got regular time machine backups and just backed up some of my data by copying some key folders to an external drive.  I'm bit paranoid about backup integrity and would ideally like to do another full backup to a different drive using a system other than time machine, in the event that something goes wrong with the time machine backup.  Any recommendations on good and affordable backup software to do a backup of my TM backup?
One other question: I seem to encounter problems like this pretty frequently.  I'd say once a year or so, my drive fails completely or gets near enough to failing that I have to wipe and restore.  (I've never had a TM backup fail to work, though the last go around there were some hiccups which has led to my backup paranoia.)  I've had this happen on multiple computers, so I'm becoming pretty convinced that the problem lies somewhere in my data.  Is it possible (even likely) that there's something in my data causing this recurring problem?  If so, is there anything I might be able to do to try and pinpoint and address this problem?  I'd love to go one year without having to wipe/restore my machine!
For a while I thought I just had bad luck.  But I think this is like the 4th or 5th time this has happened in the past 4 years and every time, I'm restoring from a backup, so I come back with the same data.  It's the one constant since I've had 3 different machines over this same time period.

  • Why Airport USB disk is that slow?

I'm using Airport Extreme at 802.11n to connect to the Internet and a 400GB USB 2.0 disk. I wonder why the transfer is SO SLOW (ussually 2.0 MB/s and peak of 5 MB/s).
For other people is this speed too?

I got so frustrated with the slow speed on mine that I actually unplugged it from the APEBS and plugged directly into my MBP. Made me "very very angry indeed"! I didn't have this problem under Tiger.

  • DIsk Utility Question  w/ usb drive

I have a 2 gig usb drive that i use for everything, keep my school notes, a couple small programs on it etc. and last night i installed xp using bootcamp. i wanted to partition my usb drive into 2 partitions, one that i can continue to use with my mac, and one like a bridge to transfer files etc. i went into disk utility today to do that and then selected my usb drive, went to the partition tab, and it presented me with this statement
does anyone know how to fix this, or how i can partition this usb drive? and ive already backed up the information on the usb drive to a cd. thanks for the help...

g4 mac mini, 2 ghz white macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   3rd generation ipod

i relaunched disk utility and it said the same thing as before. i restarted, the same thing, shut down for an hour and a half, same thing. the usb drive is just the little dongle kind, the one where you can just carry it around in your pocket, so it doesn't come with a power supply, so thats a no-go. i tried to go into the partition section of my actual harddrive, and it works good, shows the 10 gb winxp partition and the 50(or so) gb mac osx section so it isn't the computer. any other suggestions? thanks

This particular drive has two partitions on it currently, one of which is a DOSFAT_16_SHidden. I have been trying to play around and get this thing to format for a few days now on Linux, windows and my Mac. Should I just give up on it or what?

    Master Boot Record. Do this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
