Disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files / empty trash securely

I just used the disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files...
It created a recovery folder which I tried to empty trash securely...i the got a message saying there are some locked items and I responded to remove all items...
It would not let me do that the file stayed in the trash until I changed the setting and just emptied the trash the conventional way..
Can anyone tell me why that is happening???

Disk Drill, and all other file recovery apps for the Mac will recover every deleted file it can find on the drive. However, it should not have been at all possible to recover the ones you deleted with Secure Empty Trash. All files currently in the trash have every bit of their data overwritten 7 times with random data.
Were these part of what was recovered? Or just other normally deleted items?

Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?
Because if the drive is working physically, then there is a host of fixes

  • HT1782 Is there a way to partition my bootcamp via disk utility whithout impacting the windows 8.1 which is already installed?

I have got a new macbook pro 15 with SSD - 512Gig, RAM - 16 Gig, NVIDIA GPU - 2 Gig. I basically work on windows stuff and I heard of the bootcamp support that apple provide to install windows in their models and wanted to try the best APPLE mobile PC.
    What I did:
I logged in to windows 8.1 via bootcamp and under disk management tool in windows I partitioned my bootcamp drive to add a new partition. The partition was successfully done but when I tried to bootcamp back to OSx, the diskutility did not recognise the addtional partition that i created, eventually i couldnt logon to OSx. Then I logged back in to windows 8.1 and deleted the partition and tried loggin to OSx. But now the diskutility didnot recognise any of the drives at all, and I ended up earsing all the partitions and recovered OSx via internet.
I guess the partitions cannot be modified outside the OSx itself. So is there a way to partition my bootcamp via disk utility whithout impacting the windows 8.1 which is already installed?
    Any one please help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sreejesh.

After using BootCamp to partition a drive, the partition map is a hybrid that Disk Utility is unable to do anything with safely as far as partitioning goes.
Try Camptune from Paragon at http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ instead.

Press Command and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility and verify the drive. If it's damaged, repair. If it works properly, reinstall OS X Mountain Lion or restore your backup

  • I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

No.  When you removed the photos via the finder you damage the library.  Photos should always be removed from the library using iPhoto, never with the Finder.
If you have a Time Machine backup of the library from before you deleted the photos you can restore the library to the Desktop and export that album from it to import into your current library.
It's been too long to be able to try one of the file recovery applications.  You sure to have overwritten those files with new files since them.

  • I can't burn a dvd using any method, Idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when i click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac

I can't burn a dvd using any method, idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when I click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac, or how do I do whatever I need to do to get it working: I have already tried using a lens cleaning cd and also restored my nvram or something i forget what it was called but i restarted my computer holding down  command+optoion+p+r and still nothing???
Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

  • HT203176 i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities and said I need to repair disk from a cd. did that, I got volume repaired from the external disk. when I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair

i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
    Can anyone help? thanks

Sorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

  • My HD needs to be reformatted according to Disk Utility, but even when I use an external device for startup, Disk Utility cannot reformat the HD

I have a Macbook with a 500 GB Hard Drive. A routine check on Disk Utility told me the disk needed to be reformatted. I restarted from an external USB drive, but when I try to use Disk Utility to repair the HD or to reformat it, Disk Utility is unable to do anything with the HD (cannot repair, cannot erase, cannot reformat the HD).  Is there a utility App that can help me with this, or is the HD unrecoverable?

    Hi
Thanks very much for your reply. We have been starting up from a backup (USB) drive and use the disk utility that is on the backup drive so the internal (problem) HD is not being used for anything (except for wanting to repair it). Still Disk Utility cannot reformat or repair the drive. I have also run Onyx but it tells me everything is OK on the drive.
But I have made a little progress. Using my old install disk for Snow Leopard (10.6.3) I have managed to do a fresh install of the system on the internal HD. Unfortunately, I also asked the install disk to transfer/migrate the settings and documents from the backup drive back onto my internal HD. The install appeared to work, but then it got hung up on copying the documents from my backup drive to the HD. After letting it sit for 2 days without going anywhere, I stopped the install process. I am going to try again, just using my Snow Leopard  CD to install Snow Leopard, and nothing else. If that works, I will then get on to the problem of copying the rest of the settings and documents from my backup.
But since the Mac works OK off the USB  backup, and will also run off the install CD, I am guessing the problem is with the HD and the only solution might be to replace it if I can't repair it. But the macbook is several years old, and I am not sure it is worth buying a new HD for it.

  • Lion Install thinks that the system disk "Macintosh HD" is not Mac OS Extended (journaled); it is. Exactly what do I do in Disk Utility to "reformat" the disk, I don't see that listed on the menus.

Error Message, during installation of Lion; “This disk is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Use Disk Utility to enable journaling or reformat the disk.”  The disk I selected to install OS X on, was the only one listed, “Macintosh HD”. The results of a Disk Utility check are; Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled), Name: Macintosh HD. There is a fresh Time Machine backup. The computer was Restarted and installation attempted again - same result. I have downloaded Lion a second time, and tired install again, same results. The computer is a December 2007, iMac 24” with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Memory, s/w version 10.7.5; Disk Capacity 319 GB, Available 117 GB. Macintosh HD has alway been the system disk, does it now have an identity crisis? Would reformatting the disk mean Erasing it? Exactly what do I do in Disk Utility to “reformat” the disk, I don’t see that listed on the menus. This computer is getting cranky, I no longer Shut Down at night, only Sleep. If it’s Shut Down, the next morning I am treated to a white screen, for a long time, before it finally shows me the Log On Screen.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

RRFS - This took me a long time to finally get to a fix. Your reply led me to investigate the Repair Disk Partition - as it turned out there wasn't one; the HardDrive was going bad slowly. The 10 to 40 minutes it took to startup in the morning, was the HD trying to find it's way. I had the 320GB HD replaced with a 2TB HD. All is OK now. Thank You very much!!  Also, the Apple store geeks couldn't make it better but the locally owned Apple retailer did just great with it. from San Luis Obispo County - Peace.

  • Is Disk Utility in OS X 10.8.2 the version of Disk utilit that controls the Fusion Drive on new Imacs?

is Disk Utility in OS X 10.8.2 the version of Disk utilit that controls the Fusion Drive on new Imacs?

No. Only those computers with a Fusion Drive installed will get the special version of Disk Utility. Do a Google search if you want to find out how to create a fusion drive with older systems, but I suggest it's a waste of time.

LaCie doesnt make ANYTHING.  It contains a Seagate 3.5" 5400RPM HD.
Check the HD on another computer, if nothing, your SATA bridge is fried, or the HD (very unlikely since its a Seagate inside)
Youd have to crack open the HD, remove the SATA bridge cart thats plugged into the HD and put the HD into an enclosure or a HD dock to get the data
those external HD use a 50 cent SATA bridge famous for failing.  The curse of all the good HD externals is the junk 3rd party SATA bridges attached to them that crash and burn.

  • Lacie 1TB external HDD recently stopped doing Time Machine backups. Disk Utility recommends that the disk needs to be repaired.

I've been using my Lacie 1TB external HDD for my Time Machine backups for quite sometime. Its never given me any problems until now.
It recently stopped doing the backups, so I checked Disk Utility and it recommended that I repair the disk. How long does it take for Disk Utility to repair a 1TB external HDD?
    Other things to consider:
    - Cant find the disk in the Finder, I used to be able to do that before.
    - When I tried to go a Time Machine backup, it said the disk was not available.
Upon using disk utiliy, I successfully verified the disk. Then I initiated the disk repair process.
    The current status:
    - checking file system
    - Volume repair complete
    - Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
The progress bar says "Verify and Repair volume "LaCie"" - the progress bar does not indicate how much has been done or how long it will take.
    Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,476,416 Bytes)
    Mount Point: Not Mounted
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    All other status fields blank.
Any one know how long it will take for Disk Utility to repair the external HDD? Any other ideas as to how I can get the Lacie HDD to reconnect with the Macbook and resume normal operations? i.e. Time Machine backups, accessing contents through the Finder.

Mine Failed after 3 years and 4 months of using it as a Dedicated TM Backup drive...
When I used Disk Utility for repairs... it went from 7 minutes to 4 hours and after about 10 minutes it was saying 40 hours...
So I just replace it with a New EHD...

  • Can I use my iMac's (10.8.2) disk utility to repair the hard drive of a Macbook (10.6.8)?  The Macbook's startup disk is unavailable.

Is it as simple as connecting the Macs together with a USB cable?

I think you can.  I connected a MBP with Lion to a MBP that has three volumes, each with a different OS.  I put that MBP in Target disk mode.  I booted the MBP with Lion, OPTION key down and it showed all of the volumes, including the target disk mode MBP.  I selected the Recovery HDD and then selected the Disk Utility option from the menu.  All volumes were on Disk Utility.  That is as far as I went.  Try it.  I think you will succeed.
    Ciao.

  • Disk utility stuck in the middle of system installation

I have just fitted a new solid state hard drive. My old drive is now where my non functioning Superddrive users to be, which is working fine.
I started by giving my new drive one partition with disk utility. That was fine and I began to install OS Lion. The machine restarted.
Then I got a message to say that my disk was damaged and that I should run disk utility. Within the installer programme I went back and clicked on 'Repair disk'. However disk utility reported no problems. So I tried to repartition my drive. This is where the utility got stuck 'waiting for disks to reappear'. Eventually the machine started getting hot, so a hard restart seemed my only option. Soon I was back in disk utility and still there was no reported damage to my drive. Partition restored, (by selecting 'Erase' rather than 'Partition'), I went on with my installation, but this time was told a recovery partition couldn't be created. Back into disk utility, still no damage but the partition 'erase' is trying to restore is taking forever!
What should I do now? It looks like my plans for a faster system are doomed!

I forgot to update you on what has happened since.
I wanted to get back into the system on my old hard drive. Disk Utility was totally stuck and so I hard restarted once more. I seemed to be going round in circles but was glad to see that every time I asked D.U. to repair my new drive it reported that all was well. Eventually, holding down the option key in the vain hope of getting back onto my old drive I found a screen wheere I had the opportunity to start up from the recovery drive, presumeably of my old drive since it had told me it couldn't create one on the new drive.
I followed this and went through the process again. This time it asked me to sign in and get connected to the internet. I soon realised that it was trying to download the install programme which I know takes ages as I did it yesterday. So I quit out of that and was then finally offered the chance of starting up in my old drive.
Running D.U. from my old drive revealed loads of red writing. I'm currently searching for my Disk Warrior CD in the hope that it may be reparable as D.U. doesn't seem to be able to do much.
I can't believe these SSDs are so fragile! They are surely the same technology as the seemingly indestructible flash drives we all carry around on our keyrings and yet I've now had two of these fail me on system installation. Maybe I should just put a flash drive in my computer and have done with it!
