Disk Utility unable to burn discs on an external

I recently bought a Pioneer DVR-K05 (I accidentally broke my SuperDrive). So far, I have used it to open a CD in iTunes and run StarCraft, yet when I insert a blank disc (I've tried both CD-R and DVD+RWs), and try to show them on Finder, a popup appears, saying "The disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025)".
Disk Utility notices the blank discs exist, yet, I can't burn an image onto the discs. Clicking the Burn button takes me to the burn options screen, saying the only optical drive available is my SuperDrive. Also, nothing in the First Aid, Erase, or Partition tabs can be clicked, and the only thing clickable in the Restore tab is the Source text box and the "Image..." button.
I've been trying to burn images for several days, and yesterday, somehow, I finally got Disk Utility to burn an image. Then I quit Disk Utility, and today, I can't burn anything again. Anyone have a solution on how I got it to work yesterday, or how to fix the problem altogether?

Have you tried using the Patchburn utility?

Disk Utility Unable to Correctly Burn Bootable Discs From ISO Files with Yosemite (10.10.1)

My problem is with burning ISO images to make a bootable DVD disc with OSX 10.10.1. I cannot drag and drop an ISO file (in this case, Ubuntu 14.04 server iso) to the disk utility and then burn it with Yosemite. I have to first open the ISO file, then attempt to burn it. The DVD it creates is unreadable. I tried to convert the ISO file to CDR and also IMG - same problem: disc unreadable error.
I then went back to OSX 10.9.5 and tried the same thing - worked like a champ. I was able to drag and drop the ISO file into the Disk Utility window and successfully burn a bootable DVD disc from the same Ubuntu ISO file I tried using with 10.10.1.
Hey Apple, what's up? You broke Disk Utility in 10.10.1. Has anyone experienced the same problem and found a work-around? I hate to have to keep booting an older version of OSX to accomplish this task. So far, Yosemite has been a bust for me with all the other problems I have experienced. I might as well go back to 10.9.5 on all my Macs until Apple gets their act together with Yosemite.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Otherwise software may be attempted to access the drive. The the computer up in Safe Mode by holding shift when you turn it on. Also be sure to power off and on the hard drive itself.

Unable to burn disc, unknown error (-3)

Client has a Lenovo netbook with an External DVD/CD Burner. With current iTunes Win7 x64 release as of writing.
Whenever she burns a disc it preps the image and when it gets to burning, it pops the disc out and Messages me...

I've checked around and never seen this error code pop up at all on any suppport forums, any ideas I'm willing to try out.

So I got this error for a new playlist that I was attempting to burn. I noticed that it would fail when it reached a specific song in the preparing disc process. Nothing special about this song from what I can tell. I purchased it through iTunes along with the entire album. Once I removed that song from the playlist, it burns with no hangups.
Going to delete that song from the library and reload it from the cloud. Will report back if that helped.

I encountered the same problem. After verify disk, I got the message to repair the disk. But it was unable to complete the repair. Rather than purchase Disk Warrior, I tried something else.
What I did was reinstall the OSX (this iMac is still on Leopard). I backed up everything, naturally, before doing the reinstall. I chose the "Archive and Install" option, along with "Preserve Users and Network Settings". This method moves existing files to a folder named "Previous System" and imports existing user accounts, network settings, and home folders into the new OSX.
After the successful reinstall, I ran Disk Utility. It checked AND repaired Permissions. It verified that the disk was fine and no longer needed repair.
If this didn't work, my plan "B" was to reinstall the OSX again, this time with the "Erase and Install" option. Fortunately, I didn't have to go to plan "B".

Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)

Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

Disk Utility won't burn a .cdr image to DVD – why and what do I do?

I've burned DVDs before and I've had success with my MB Pro. I know the steps and use this support article as a refresher each time to assure I'm following all the steps. Yesterday and today I've tried to burn 2 different .cdr images made with Disk Utility to blank DVDs without success. It starts to copy and within less than 2 minutes, I get the message:
"Unable to burn 'xxx.cdr' (The disc can't be burned; it might be incompatible with this disc drive. Please try a different brand of disc, or try burning at a slower speed.)"
I tried 3 different blank DVDs (they are DVD+Rs 16x|4.7GB), 2 different brands (TDK & Sony) but no success.
What's going on and what do I do to troubleshoot and resolve this problem?

Neither TDK nor Sony are considered reliable or quality media. Most of us here use Verbatim DVD-R and burn at only 2x or 4x.

Disk Utility won't create Disc Image from DVD

I'm trying to copy a DVD that I made in iMovie and iDVD. The DVD plays fine, using DVD Player. I open Disc Utility, select the DVD, click "New Image," and save to a directory. The hard drive has plenty of room. Disk Utility then shows a stop sign and says "No such file or directory".
Is Disc Utility saying that there's no such file/directory/DVD to copy from, or no such file/directory to copy to? I've tried many file names and many directories on 5 hard drives.
I've tried selecting under "Image Format" both "read-only" and "DVD/CD Master." I leave "Encryption" at "none."
My computer has had this problem for at least six months, with dozens of DVDs. I've used both the internal 105 optical drive and an external 111 optical drive.
I clicked "Help" in the Disk Utility menu, but there's no help pages.
Is there another software application that copies DVDs? I tried Mac the Ripper, but it seems to only copy DVDs to my hard drive. I can't figure out how to make a DVD from the M-the-R files on my hard drive. Dragging to a blank DVD and burning produces a DVD that won't play in DVD Player.

there are several out there. Probably the one with the highest reputation is Roxio's Toast Titanium. But you could also try Fast DVD Copy or DVD2oneX2.

Disk Utility and/or burner not working properly

I always back up every new DVD I buy. The past month or more, every DVD I burn has been messed up. I always get a Verification failed error about 1/4 through the verification, and then the disc plays with so many stops and skips I have to restart the movie about 20 times, skipping past the bad parts, to finish it.
The reason I don't think it's the software I use to actually copy/shrink/image is because I just tried burning an old backup image (from before this started happening), and I got the same Verification failed error and the DVD screwed up and crashed DVD Player.
So how do I find out if it's Disk Utility or just my drive? I want to get this fixed. Thank you!

I used Disk Utility to backup the internal hard drive of my iMac G5 iSight.
The last backup of the hard drive was unsuccessful, ending with next message: Unable to create "ImageName.dmg"; error -39.
The iMac is running OS X 10.4.11.
I proceed as follows:
Boot from the OS X 10.4.2 installation DVD and firing up Disk Utility.
Menu option: File, New, Disk Image from disk0s3 (Mac HD)
The target disk is Porche_LaCie FireWire drive.
After +/- 2 hours I end up with the above message.

The target drive already contains 3 earlier images. The biggest image has a size of 28,14 GB. And as you can see this drive ha enough place for other images.
So what is going wrong?
I Googled for this error -39 without any success and I have not found any thing about this particular error in Apple's discussions or support pages.
I would feel a lot safer with a decent image of my Hard Drive. I already lost one and do not want to repeat this again...

If you want to create a backup of your system volume, then do not use disc images. They are not bootable. Here's a far better solution:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
You can also do the same using other backup utilities that can create bootable backups:

I've created a DVD disc image from DVDSP3 and want to burn it to a new DVD-R at less than 8x speed, but Disk Utility has greyed out the speed setting.

Yes, you can set the burn speed in the iDVD '08 Preferences (finally).
I just can figure out what your problem is with Disk Utility - it's probably something simple we are overlooking.

Disk Utility will not burn DVDs

Disk Utility will no longer burn DVDs. I have tried both Memorex and Verbatim DVD+R DL -- Disk Utility tells me the disks are locked, not writable, capacity 0. These are fresh DVDs right off the spindle. I am, however able to write to these same DVDs using Burn, so it's not a media problem. Tried deleting preferences for Disk Utility, tried using Drive Genius 2 to repair the HD, but it didn't show any problems. Any solution short of doing a clean install of the system?

Actually, yes, I've tried many types of DVDs, the last one was " Imation DVD+R DL " & it's failed.
In fact, I was trying to burn SNOW-LEOPARD using Disk Utility and others applications, non of them worked.
So, I think the problem isn't in the type of DVD.
I have used another computer to burn the SNOW-LEOPARD and it's done, But i faced a new problem
that is the system doesn't read the DVD and it doesn't show the option of choosing which system I
want to boot ?
I really don't know wether the problem in the SNOW-LEOPARD file that i downloaded or it's is in my
system or in the DVD reader of my MACBOOK Pro.

Disk Utility crashes attempting burn .iso

I'm a very new user of a PPC G4 that I came across and have no experience of these machines. It's running OS X 10.3.9. I've installed Ubuntu with dual boot on a separate drive OK but had to burn the Ubuntu .iso installation CD on a system running XP. Articles I've read tell me that Disk Utility should be able to do this by dragging the file name into the left pane and selecting Burn. This works OK with a .dmg file but when a .iso file is used (any .iso, not just Ubuntu) Disk Utility crashes with an unspecified Internal Error. The CD burned form the .dmg does not boot, so is of no use for installation purposes. Any help appreciated.

You may be able to use a simple Burn utility that makes
either CD or DVD media recordings on blank media for
use in either Mac &/or PC format. Not sure if one can
simply use a utility such as this:

There are limitations and some restrictions, after a fashion,
that slow the idea of making a copy of a Mac OS install disc.
+(Copyrights, end-user-rules, conditions of use, etc will apply.)+
That is another matter; one method includes Disk Utility, &
for large size systems, a Dual-Layer DVD recorder is needed.
To make a workable copy of your non-Mac unix OS disc
and have it be a bootable copy. The format of the media
has to be correct. As does the method of copying an image.
Some kinds of items require making a Clone, not an Image.
There are some rules to make a copy of an OS disc bootable;
even so, the rules for a non-Mac system could be different.
Hopefully some ideas of how to accomplish the task can be found.

Burning Dual Layer DVD in Disk Utility vs. Burn Folder

Using Disk Utility, I created an Image, (File > New Image from Folder), The resulting .dmg file was about 8.3 Gigabytes. Still in Disk Utility, I select the volume (Filename.dmg) and click Burn, insert a dual layer disk and get a "Disk does not have enough free space" message. I create another image of the same folder, but select "Compressed", giving a folder size of about 6.2 Gigabytes. I try to burn this but again get the "not enough free space" message.
Now I try creating a Burn Folder, put the 6.2 gb Filename.dmg in the folder and select Burn, It burns fine.
Why does the Burn Folder method work and not Disk Utility? What am I missing?
I would appreciate any insight.

Hi James:
When you try to copy the dual-layer you may encounter problems because the layer-break may not be where you think it should be.
When you try to copy the actual dual Layer DVD, iDVD will inform you that doing so may result in a disc that has playback problems in DVD players. It states that you are better off burning it with iDVD than from a Disk Utility.
3rd party software that will help would be Roxio's Toast 6, 7 or Popcorn.
