Disk utility used up my hard drive space?

I recently had a hard drive crash and was trying to repair it with disk utilities.  I had the bad drive in an external drive case hooked up to my Macbook Pro via usb.  During the process Disk Utility used about 20 GB of drive space on the internal drive on the laptop.  I'm not sure what it was doing, but as it ran I could watch my available space go down.  When the process was done, it said it couldn't repair the disk.  Now I can't figure out how to get my drive space back in the internal drive of my Macbook Pro.  I have rebooted, repaired permissions and used the Yasu system utility.  There is nothing in the trash to be emptied.  I can't thnk of anything else.  Has anyone else come across this happening?

Use a disk inventory utility like OmniDiskSweeper to find out what is taking the space.

hey i usually use disk utility to fix my hard drive problems of been invisible, but lately, doing disk utility and repairing the disk doesn't seem to work anymore? do you guys have any other suggestions, its a seagate go flex hard drive

You need to boot to recovery mode to repair the boot drive (partition containing the operating system). Hold cmd+r on boot up, or hold the alt key and select recovery when you are given the options of what partition to boot to.

  • If i download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space?

If I download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space on my mac?

iPhoto and Lightroom are similar apps - although LR is a far more capable app - and that the price it should be, of course. But the two apps are similar in that they both offer
    Photo Management
    Non-Destructive Processing
So, essentially, they both play the same part in the workflow.
    The procedure would be to
Download the images from the camera into the Photo Manager (regardless of which one you choose)
Review and select in the Manager
Trash the unwanted with the Manager
Process the images - that is, in most cases edit them.
It is at this point - and only this point - that Photoshop might come into play. Both of these apps can act as a 'front-end' for Photoshop - after all, they're the Managers. But in truth, if you're using Lightroom then you very likely do not need Photoshop at all, and for anything that does require layers you can use one of the many - much less expensive - alternatives. But I think the common experience is that with Lightroom (like Aperture) the requirement for the sledgehammer that is Photoshop really fades away.
So pick one horse and ride it. Choose between LR and iPhoto. Use it like it's intended. Don't get involved in other necessary apps. Don't review before bringing the photo into the manager - that's what the manager is for.

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.

  • G4 disk utility does not see hard drive

I am helping someone with a G4 Quicksilver. She is running 10.4 but only has disks for 10.1 and 10.2. When I boot with the 10.2 CD, disk utility does not see the hard drive. I was thinking of connecting her computer to my MacBookPro (Intel, 10.5) via target disk mode and then running Disk Utility. Is that crazy? She is suffering from slow startup and grey screen. I've disconnected the periferals, safe booted, reset PRAM. She really needs Disk Utility.

with the 10.2 CD, disk utility does not see the hard drive.
Disk Utility from 10.2 should see the hard drive (the drive name should appear in the left box). If it does not, the drive is malfunctioning or has a loose cable.
If you attempt to Verify, it will complain that there are illegal values in reserved fields in several different record types. Using this older Disk Utility to repair a 10.4 disk may cause more problems than it solves.
As Tom \[Texas Mac Man] says, you should only repair 10.4 and later disks with 10.4 and later Disk Utility:
HT2648- Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes
    • If you boot the regular Hard Drive (no CD/DVD required) while holding down the Shift key, it will do a quick check of the Hard Drive, then boot up in "Safe Mode". This will fix any simple Disk problems.
    • 10.4.3 and later can do a Disk Utility Verify of the Boot drive, "live" (but cannot Repair "live").

  • Events vs projects files---am i using twice the hard drive space?

If i have a movie in events file...then move it to projects file, does it utilize twice as much hard drive space becuase there are two movies--one in each file?

An iMovie project is a text file in hexadecimal that contains instructions for creating your edited movie. The movie is created when you use the SHARE menu by running the instructions in the project.
The project instructions will reference the actual video files which are contained in the Events. So if you delete your Event files, your projects will no longer have anything to reference, and they will no longer work.
So the answer is, no, there is not a duplicate created when you drag a clip to a project.
This has several advantages. You can use an Event in multiple projects without duplicating space. You can make edits, color correction, etc, and none of this is destructive to the original footage.

  • TS1440 If disk utility cannot identify any hard drive

if disk utility can't identify the hard drive(i changed three different),then what?

It could be a hardware failure. If Disk Utility can't see the drive, usually the directory is so badly damaged that it doesn't show up, or it could be hardware.  I usually turn to a 3rd party utility called Disk Warrior. Its saved me a bunch of times. I have seen it bring drives back to life that I was pretty sure were gone. http://www.alsoft.com
Can you verify that the drive is running? Can you hear it spin up?
Its not clear to me if you are saying that you tried 3 different hard drives, is that correct? Internal or external?

  • Firefox is using too much hard drive space

According to my control panel, mozilla firefox is taking 8gb of my hard drive.

I think it is very strange also, but I did end up uninstalling it and reinstalling it on my hdd instead of my ssd. In doing so I free'd up 5gb of hard drive space on my ssd. I have no idea why it would have taken up so much hard drive space in the first place though.

  • Can I Use Disk Utility from an External Hard Drive?

I would like to use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair my hard drive. I am too lazy to run this from my install disk. Can I merely copy the application to my external hard drive and launch it from there? Would this work successfully? Could it damage anything? Thanks!

Hi! You can't repair a disk that you are booted from so you could run the repair disk function IF you are booted from another volume such as a bootable internal or external drive or the install disc. You'll have to clone your boot drive and repair from the clone after booting to it. Tom

Roger and captfred are correct, you will still need to reset both the _Partition Map Scheme_ to GUID Partition Table and the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Connect the External HD and open Disk Utility in your Utilities Folder.
    2. Highlight the External HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
    3. Under Volume Scheme select _1 Partition_ and click on the Options... button.
    4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
    5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), name it and click the Apply button.

  • Can I move old video footage from Disk Utility to an external hard drive, to free up space?

I have a lot of old videos of my students located on Disk Utility.
I need to free up memory, so am wondering if I can move these videos to an external hard drive.
From time to time, I need to access these old videos, either to show to a new choreographer or to pull out  a clip for a grant proposal, so I don't want to totally lose access to them.
    Thanks so very much!!!

What's the file extension of the DVD in question located in Disk Utility? That's why I was asking for a screenshot. Is that .cdr? Can you do a File>Save As? If it's .cdr can you try dragging it to the external. Doesn't have to go to Disk Utility. Can just be to a folder there. As you drag it does it show with a + inside a green circle? That will mean it's copying it, but leaving the original in place. If it can be moved successfully, you can then remove the original from Disk Utility.
Or just copy (drag) it to your Desktop, then move it over to a folder on the external.

  • Can I use my iMac's (10.8.2) disk utility to repair the hard drive of a Macbook (10.6.8)?  The Macbook's startup disk is unavailable.

Is it as simple as connecting the Macs together with a USB cable?

I think you can.  I connected a MBP with Lion to a MBP that has three volumes, each with a different OS.  I put that MBP in Target disk mode.  I booted the MBP with Lion, OPTION key down and it showed all of the volumes, including the target disk mode MBP.  I selected the Recovery HDD and then selected the Disk Utility option from the menu.  All volumes were on Disk Utility.  That is as far as I went.  Try it.  I think you will succeed.
    Ciao.

  • Disk Utility stats vs. Hard Drive "get info"

Trying to backup my hard drive and running into some frustrating issues!
Recent hard drive crash -- used Applejack (Snow Leopard version) to clean up Lion.  Bad decision.
Recently moved my iTunes library to external drive.
Wanting to backup internal hard drive using Time Machine but...
    DISK UTILITY SAYS...
    capacity = 499.25 GB
    available = 152.92 GB
    used = 346.33 GB
and "GET INFO" ON HARD DRIVE SAYS...
    used = 99.95 GB
External is 250 GB capacity and there is NOT 346 gigs of stuff on the internal after having just moved iTunes to a separate 1TB HD...
    WHAT IS WRONG?!?!?!?

Heh, heh, even computers get konfuzzed every now and then...

  • Used G5 minimal hard drive space

Just bought a used G5 single processor with an 80 gig drive but found there's only 50 available even though the only major software on the machine is CS Photoshop and Microsoft Word. Where's my extra drive space and how do I get it back without reformatting (I don't have the original PS CS or MSW disks)?

Hi, Larry, and welcome to the Discussions!
I'd look in the user folder (or user folders, if there are multiple users set up) to see what's in there. Use Get Info to see the folder sizes being used. Likely space hogs might be found in the Movies, Music, and Pictures folders. The Documents folder might also be loaded with junk, including the downloads folder. Also do a Spotlight search for a folder named Previous Systems, which you should look at if there are any, and delete them if you don't need anything there (if you're unsure, back them up to disc). If you don't find large amounts of files to trash, then download and run WhatSize to see what is taking up your space.
Off-topic... I don't know where you got the Mac, but if the admin accounts are active and depending how your Sharing and other preferences are configured, be aware that it's possible that your Mac could be accessible by a third party while it's connected to a modem. Also, if the original owner retained possession of the PS CS and Word software discs, you might look into the legality of using these programs. Most licenses require physical transfer of the original software as part of the agreement.

  • Disk Utility -- order of internal hard drives in drive list?

I just upgraded my Mac Pro with two additional hard drives, installed in Bay 2 and Bay 3. Both drives are the same, Western Digital 250GB model WD2500KS. The stock drive is a 250GB Seagate.
My question is in regards to the order in which the drives appear in the list of drives (left-column) of Disk Utility. In other Macs I've owned, the drive installed into the first, or "main" internal drive bay would show up at the top of the list, with subsequent drives ordered below.
On my Mac Pro, with the drives installed as described above, the WD drive installed in Bay 2 shows up first in the list (at the top), then the Seagate (Bay 1) second, then the WD drive in Bay 3 third.
Now admittedly, this is not really an issue, as the drives work fine and I can manage them in Disk Utility without problems. I'm just curious as to why they are lining up out of the usual "order"? Is there a way to rearrange them in the list? I'd actually prefer to have my startup drive (Bay 1) listed first, with the other two BELOW that drive. Is there a preference file I can alter, or some other way of manually ordering them?
I tried zapping PRAM, which did not help. I also tried uninstalling the drive in Bay 2 and then reinstalling it. This actually worked temporarily. When I rebooted, the Bay 2 (WD) drive showed up in the list below the Bay 1 drive (Seagate) as desired. But upon another restart, it showed up at the top of the list again! Strange behavior.
    Any thoughts?
I am running Tiger 10.4.10 on a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad.
    Best,
    Alan

    Rick,
I've tried playing around with renaming drives (and partitions), and changing the Finder's view options with respect to the order in which drives are listed (either by name or otherwise), but it doesn't have any effect on the ordering of drives in Disk Utility. Seems like it's a separate deal. I think it does have something to do with which physical drive is seen first by the computer as it boots up (pretty much what was said in the first response), and the order in which disk ID's are assigned. Again, the strange thing is that sometimes it does list the Seagate (Bay 1) first, followed by Bay 2 and 3. But usually not. Most of the time, it lists the drive in Bay 2 (and its respective partitions) first, and then Bay 1 with its partitions, then Bay 3. Odd.
If you have any other ideas I'm all ears!
    Best,
    Alan
