Disk Utility verfy found too many clusters allocated

I just purchaced a new LaCie firewire drive. While copying files over to it I got some errors. I ran Disk Utility "verfy" on it and got the following:
Verifying disk "LACIE".
** /dev/disk3s1
** Phase 1 - Read FAT
** Phase 2 - Check Cluster Chains
** Phase 3 - Checking Directories
/Desktop DF has too many clusters allocated
Drop superfluous clusters? no
** Phase 4 - Checking for Lost Files

** Phase 1 - Read FAT
** Phase 2 - Check Cluster Chains
** Phase 3 - Checking Directories
/Desktop DF has too many clusters allocated
Drop superfluous clusters? no
** Phase 4 - Checking for Lost Files
1284 files, 1097600 free (2393596 clusters)
Verify completed.
Do I need to do a repair? Are these errors? Will repare delete the files I've already copied? I want to send this drive to my father in Venezuela. I need to make sure the drive is ok. The errors I got concern me. Should I re-initialize the disk? He is running OS 9 so I need to make sure he will be able to read it.
Thanks,
Alfredo

Hello! The drive is formatted to fat32. Reformat (in disk utility)it to Mac OSX entended and check the box "install os9 drivers". If you use the "zero" option it will lock out any bad blocks....it's a good idea to do this on a new drive. Tom

  • Java.util.zip.ZipException: Too many open files on Linux

    Hi,
We have web application running on Caucho's resin server on jdk 1.5.0_11 and Red hat Linux. We are noticing that java process is running out of file handles within 24-30 hours. We have file limit of 5000 which it consumes in 24 hours throwing 'java.util.zip.ZipException: Too many open files'.
I have made sure all sorts of file handles are closed from application point of view. Here is the snapshot of lsof (list of file handles) from java process. The following list keeps growing until it runs out of limit. Do you have tips/suggestions on how to mitigate this problem (considering we dont want to increase ulimit for this process)? Also, can you make out any thing more from the description of file handles like, are they unclosed POP3 connections or URL connection to external sites?

Finally we resolved this issue. It was oracle driver which had some compatibility issue, we upgraded our Oracle client driver to newer version, and this fixed the problem. Base line, there was nothing wrong with application code, code was doing good resource clean up, but oracle driver was leaking handles per every connection.

  • I recently downloaded is x mountain lion and while it finished it erased all my data, some of which I need. When using disk utility I found my old data but it says corrupted. I can't repair and while restoring the error code 32 Broken Pipe appears. Help?

My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)

Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch.

  • Disk Utility hangs - found a solution

When I opened Disk Utility, it displayed "Gathering disk information..." but never got beyond that point. I have an external La Cie drive which I use for occasional backups, which was turned off a that point. When I turned it on and launched Disk Utility again it behaved normally. Not wanting to keep the external drive on all the time, or even turn it on when I want to use Disk Utility, I looked in the Disk Utility preferences and found under "Mounting", a checkbox that said "skip on remote volumes". I checked the box. I dismounted the external drive, turned it off, and tried Disk Utility again. Voila! It all worked. Maybe that's the solution for this problem in general.

Hi Donald, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Great tip, thanks... I never knew about that pref in all this time!
That doesn't exist in 10.5.8 it seems though.

  • Flash Drive will not format with Disk Utility

I am in need of help.  I have looked through a ton of forums looking for the answer to this but can't find anything.  I  have a flash drive that I was using and while I was transfering a large file the drive unmounted and now it is showing "Read only".  In the Disk Utility, the Erase and Repair are grayed out.  When I verify the drive it says this:
    Checking file system** /dev/disk1
    ** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
    ** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
/CJB/myfolder/_Reference/AA45608_737_Livery_7b_RtRear_d_RGB.tif has too many clusters allocated (logical=1235222528, physical=1719664640)

Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
    I have also tried:
    diskutil repairVolume CHAD
I have located the drive in terminal and this is what it says:
    drwxrwxrwx@ 1 BDesign  staff  8192 Dec 31  1979 CHAD
When I show information in Disk Utility it shows Writable No.  Can anyone help me.  I don't need the info on my Flash Drive.  I just want to format it and get it working again.
    Thanks

Some flash drives have a failure mode in which they are irreversibly write-locked by the internal controller when it detects a write error. If the drive doesn't have a write-lock switch (most do not) and you can't erase it in Disk Utility, that's almost certainly what has happened. To be sure, test it with another computer, if possible.

  • Why am I finding this when I run disk utility? ACL found but not expected on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/Users"

I am finding this when I run repair disk permissions in disk utility:
ACL found but not expected on “Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/Users”
Why is there an access control list on parental controls on my MacBook?  I don't use parental controls and I am the only user of this MacBook. I'm an old guy too, so it's not my Mom putting controls on the MacBook! ;-)
    Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 9, 2
    System Version: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 12.5.0
    Boot Mode: Normal

From the article I posted a hyperlink to in my 1st post (at bottom): You can also usually ignore any "ACL found but not expected..." message. These messages can occur if you change permissions on a file or directory; they are accurate, but generally not a cause for concern.

  • Help, my mbp crashed disk utility wont stop running

A couple of days ago, I was using firefox, google earth, and vuze.  I was trying to close some stuff down as my mac was slowing down pretty bad.  She locked up, couldn't force quit... persisted, shut down with the off button.  After that it wouldn't beboot, and I had a dark gray screen with spinning wheel.  I couldn't boot into safe mode, so I went to the disk utility it ran for many hours, and did nothing. It found errors, but did not progress in fixing them... Just said estimated time 1 minute.
    Any ideas?
    It's a mid 2009 intel 2.66ghz, I believe.

What is the SMART status of your hard drive? If it's "Failing," just replace the drive immediately. It will be much easier for you to try to recover data from it when your MBP is back up and running properly again. You'll need an external enclosure or a SATA-to-USB adapter and a downloaded copy of Data Rescue 3 or FileSalvage, both of which offer free demo versions that show exactly what the full purchased version would be able to recover.
    Data Rescue 3: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    FileSalvage 7: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id= 1
There is no guarantee that you'll be able to recover any or all of your data if the drive has suffered a mechanical or electronic failure.

  • External HD absent from Disk Utility

    Hello all—
I recently received a brand-new MacBook Pro and—when trying to allocate some files from my 1TB Western Digital MyBook drive—discovered that this HD was not recognized by Finder. After opening Disk Utility, I found that it's not even present there.
Thinking this was a hardware issue, I plugged the drive into my older MacBook, and it appeared on the desktop without hesitation.
I've tried poking around these forums and others for solutions, but haven't yet found one. Any help would be much appreciated.

though it sounds illogical, Ive seen it before many times, works on one Mac, and not another, and is a bad / dying SATA card most likely
this 50 cent worthless part inside an external hard drive manifests such illogical behavior, and is a nasty failure point
    read all about same here:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
first verify with another external HD on the same Mac that isnt seeing the problem-HD if possible.

  • Disk Utility is not working for me.

I have had a nightmare trying to install a Boot Camp partition on my brand new 27" iMac with 3TB Fusion Drive and running 10.8.4.
When trying to use Boot Camp Assistant, it would start the partition, then not finish.  I quit BCA, tried repairing both the partition and the disk, that didn't help either.  So I went into Disk Utility to create a new partition with no file system on it, assuming I could just use Boot Camp Assistant to format it when the partition was created.  It would start, but not finish.  I tried Repairing the disk and the partition, neither helped.
So I booted with CMD+R, launched Disk Utility, and tried to create a 500GB empty partition.  It started and just never quit, so I CMD+Q, got out of it, went back to Disk Utility, I found that I now have a 1.22TB empty partition and a 1.78TB Mac Partition.  This is probably my own fault, I should have just let it run, but after 20 minutes, it wasn't moving.
I figured that would work okay, so I tried installing with BCA, but found it's looking for an HFS+ partition to resize and wouldn't work with an empty partition, so I figured I'd just format the empty partition as HFS+ and install with BCA.  Unfortunately, I can't get Disk Utility to format the partition.  I select the empty space, it puts a white block on it like normal titled Untitled 2, I select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), hit apply, something flashes very briefly over the "capacity" line, and then nothing happens.  Hit revert and it shows up with the Macintosh HD partition and the empty partition.  No matter what format I choose, nothing happens.  If I try to exit, it tells me that changes have not been saved.
I'm trying to just extend the Mac partition, but the resizing option is not available.  I can't drag it to cover the Free Space partition, I can't type in the Size to resize it by number, I can't do anything.  I've tried to repair the disk and the partition, nothing happens.  I can't reclaim the space no matter what I do.
At this point, all I want to do is recover the entire space of the hard drive for Mac OS.  I'll try again with Boot Camp Assistant after Apple works the kinks out.
    Any help would be appreciated.

The Boot Camp Assistant in 10.8.4 should be able to partition your 3TB+ drive so you can have Windows. If Disk Utility is not working then your disk is corrupt. Backup all your data using Time Machine. Erase the volume and restore from Time Machine backup. You can use the ‘OS X Recovery Disk Assistant’ (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433). Open Recovery Disk Assistant and follow the on screen instructions to create a Recovery HD on the external drive. When the Recovery Disk Assistant completes, the partition will not be visible in the Finder. To access the external Recovery HD, connect the drive, then restart the computer and hold the Option key. Select Recovery HD from the Startup Manager. You would need to re-install Mountain Lion up to 10.8.4.  Then ran Boot Camp Assistant and then install Windows.   Once you have confirmed that Windows is running then open up Migration Assistant (in the utilities folder) and migrate your Time Machine backup back on to the hard drive.

  • Unable to use Disk Utility to repair disk.

    Hi all
I have been having some problems trying to transfer movies from computer to my iPod. Someone just suggested that I use Disk Utility to verify disk permissions, as well as the disk. I was able to verify disk permissions and repair them. Noticed the some had something to do with iTunes, so that might fix my problem with transferring movies to my iPod. I then tried to verify the disk, but I got the following error "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Also this program shows that the following "Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
The <Repair Disk> button is not darkened, but is grey, such that is not an option. Any other way to repair this disk.
    Thanks
    Michael

The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive.
You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart; when you hear the chime hold down C key until the apple logo appears.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities in 10.4 and navigate to the Disk Utility application.
Select the start up drive, then go to the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.

  • Start up issues/ disk utility question

I can't get my iMac to start up past the grey apple screen. I booted off my Tiger disk and ran disk utility. My permissions were ok, but when I try and verify and repair the HD I get the following errors:
    'invalid key length
    invalid node structure
    rebuilding catalog B tree
    failure on exit'
Any sugestions. I really don't want to lose my current work by reformatting.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

Same problem with me. Happened on Monday while I was doing a complete backup (using Backup software) before installing Leopard on my Powerbook G4. The computer took ages to restart (and a significant number of hard restarts). Everything seemed to be back to normal (except the wallpaper which had disappeared).
Then I installed Leopard after a complete reformatting of my hard disk. Leopard seemed to be working OK.
Last night, after a restart (normal restart, after re-installing some software), the problem came back : extremely slow start (more than one hour), and slow response afterwards. No wallpaper, everything extremely slow.
I managed to run Disk Utility and found a "Invalid Node Structure" error.
What are the odds of that happening twice in a week ? Can the problem survive a reformatting of the hard drive ?
Or does it simply mean my hard drive is dying ?

  • Disk utility reports "unused node is not erased" after installing 1TB HD

    Hi there,
I just installed a brand new 1TB HD into a 2006 Intel iMac. I booted from the Snow Leopard installer DVD and tried installing the OS, but I received a kernel panic. I rebooted from the installer DVD again and ran Disk Utility which reported multiple instances of "unused node is not erased" and could not repair the disk. I re-partitioned the disk but each time Disk Utility gave the same error. I rebooted from the DiskWarrior DVD and rebuilt the directory (DW found no errors). I then rebooted from SL DVD again and ran Disk Utility which found the same "unused node is not erased" errors but this time was able to repair them! I'm now trying to reinstall the OS for a second time.
I'm wondering from this bizarre behaviour whether
    a) I have a faulty (new) HD
    b) there might be something else wrong with my mac causing these errors.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Greg

Well, I attached another good external drive via FireWire, booted the 2006 iMac from the SL installer DVD, partitioned it with DU, then ran DU Repair Disk, and Disk Utility immediately gave me "unused node is not erased" errors and was unable to repair the drive.
I attached the same good external drive via FireWire to another Mac and repeated the same procedure: this time DU gave me no errors at all.
I'm going to assume my 2006 iMac has a faulty logic board or SATA controller (with cost of repairs probably more than the computer is worth). Would you agree?
    Thanks again!

  • Build ERROR after reimport model, too many datatype deleted

    Hi all,
now when I reimport model of my DC, I found too many datatype would be deleted after I press Finish. I think with this deletion my dc will never pass the build. All I wonder is why this happen, what kind of operation on back end will cause this kind of deletion.
I know there must be some changes behind java layer, but I dont know why they just delete datatype, I can not continue my work with these models, they are too many, I can not fix them all or delete&recreate them.
    Give me some hint?
    Best Regards,
    William

    HI William
There might be some changes done in your Backend [exsisting model]
so it is throwing dump when you are trying to reimport. what you can do is delete the exsisting model and try to create a new model. first take the back up of the project and experiment on the dummy project

  • Flashing folder now disk utility cannot repair...backup files and reformat disk?

    Hey,
my MacBook pro recently froze on the spinning wheel while I was using the Internet, I had to hold down the power button to shut down
Once I restarted the machine I was left on a grey screen with a flashing folder sign..I read all the articles on this that I could find online and followed the procedures until the only option left was to use disk utility from the install dvd and try to diagnose and repair the problem.
I used disk utility and found it could not repar the disk named. Disk0s2 ..which I have also read is a bad sign to start with...the log said this..
                               Verify and repair volume disk0s2
                                Checking journaled HFS plus volume
                                Invalid b-tree node size
The volume.  Could not be verified completely
Disk utility could not repair this disk..backup files, reformat disk and restore backed up files
I need some advice as to that's what I should do and if there's a way for me to save my files on the mac....and more importantly how to reformat the disk properly..I've tried the YouTube tutorials and couldn't get what I was after.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this
Thank you again for reading this
    Dan

Your going to need to read the Data Recovery tip I created here
Your going to need to buy DataRescue $99 or similar to read the 1's and 0's of your files and restore them to another drive while booted from another Mac or a drive with OS X on it.
    Have fun.
