Disk Utility with an SSD Drive

Hello, I just updated my iMac with a brand new Samsung SSD drive. The drive speed is amazing now.
I ran Disk Utility to check that everything is fine, but got this message:
File system check exit code is 0.
It doesn't show that the drive needs repair, but neither shows like in past that de test went OK.
Should I be worried?

No Erase option in Disk Utility for an SSD Drive!

Hi guys,
Made a time machine copy on a 500gb external hard drive of my 13" MBP with a HDD currently in it.
Then took my 500gb SSD from an old 15" MBP, removed the HDD and put it in my 13" MBP.
Opened up 13" MBP in restore mode. Chose restore from time machine back up.
Choose the time machine external drive as source. Then chose the SSD drive to restore to.
Said it was erasing the drive... Asked for a password...
I typed in my usual password. It then said the SSD drive couldn't be erased.
Took the SSD out and put the original HDD back in.
Plugged the SSD into a firewire 800 caddy to try erase it in disk utility as an external.
This drive will show up in disk utility but the erase option isn't available.
I can repair the disk but it says the disk is perfectly fine.
I can click on the partition option but everything is greyed out and I can't partition it at all.
This drive will now no longer show up on the desktop or finder.
This is driving me crazy!
Just want to erase the SSD, use time machine to restore onto it and get busy.
Please help!

Aha! I only looked at 'format' list, didn't notice the 'option' list.

Bring up the disk utility with new hard drive

My hard drive died, completely dead! I have a Macbook Pro 15" i core 5 and I just installed a new drive. I have my macbook backed up to a WD My Book Live. Is there a command option that i can use to tell my macbook to load from a back up? I also have a Snow Leopard CD i bought recently but it won't boot from that. It looks like it does, it shows on the start up screen when i press the option key but i selected it, nothing really happened. I just heard it spinning for a little bit.

If you created a Time Machine backup from Mac OS X 10.8 or newer, connect the drive containing it and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you created a bootable clone of any Mac OS X version, connect the drive containing it and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you can't boot the computer from the backup, you'll need to use a Mac OS X install DVD or Apple's Internet Recovery system(on eligible Macs, press the Option, Command, and R keys at startup) to restore it, and if needed, install an OS.

Will Restore in Leopard Disk Utility reliably copy a drive with bootcamp?

I have a drive partitioned part OS X and part Bootcamp (with Windows XP installed). If I use Apple's Disk Utility to 'Restore' the drive (to copy the drive to a larger drive) will this work reliably for bootcamp as well as the OS X content? Presumably this just clones the drive?

Once you install MacFUSE you can not use the Startup Disk Utility anymore to boot into Windows, you need to hold the option key every time.
As you stated, NTFS is owned by Microsoft, its their proprietary format and has many different versions of it. I don't think any company has the full right to format NTFS which basically comes down that you can not complain to any of the companies or MS about data loss.
My idea with an image is that I can always read it, so in case the WinClone format or write fails I still have all my files (and not just parts of it). Since I am booted the most amount of time on Mac OS X anyway I don't care that a script creates an entire mirror image of my current Windows drive overnight.
I actually have several basic images that I can always restore in case I want to clean up my drive.

2010 i7 Won't boot from cd with new ssd drive.

I have an ssd that was in my windows pc that I want to use with my MBP. My PC motherboard actually supports uefi so to my surprise when I put it in the mac it booted right to windows. I wanted to boot from dvd and install osx on the drive but the boot stalls out whenever I try to boot from cd.
I took the drive out and hooked it up to a drive dock I have connected to my Mac Mini. I used disk utility and repartitioned the drive to one partition. Now when I option boot I no longer see the ssd, only the cd.
I tried booting from and external cd drive I have. It would start. I can hear the cd spinning up but after 2 mins or so it stops and nothing happens. Same as the internal dvd.
I put the old hdd back in and thought I'd try the boards to see if anyone else has any ideas.
Am I missing something obvious?

Try this first:

If not try using an external sata to usb connector and erase the SSD completely. The SSD honestly should not have an effect on the super drive. There may be more underlying hardware issues. Try resetting those two up top then erase the SSD drive. Try a retail disc for Snow Leopard. Bring it to an ARS and see if they can boot into an optical media...

My late 2012 mac mini boots slow with new ssd drive

So here is the situation. I purchased a 128gb ssd drive, installed it a usb enclosure, formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), cloned it with carbon copy cloner 3, used the option key during boot up and selected the ssd drive and it booted my mac mini and it functioned perfectly. I than tested it for dozens of reboots and it worked fine. I then took apart my mac mini and removed the original hard drive and installed the new ssd drive. When I boot to the ssd drive it still takes 47 to 53 seconds just like the old drive. Aren't ssd drives supposed to be a lot faster?
My solution or tip is as follows; The reason it takes so long to boot is because the mac mini doesn't know you replaced the old drive and it is looking for it during the boot process. Finally it can't find the drive so it boots to the ssd drive. All you have to do to correct this is click on "system preferences", select and click on "startup disk" and select your ssd drive and click on "restart". After these steps your mac mini will now boot in about 17 seconds. Issues solved.

Yes, my solution fixed the issue. I went from a 47 to 53 second boot time to a 17 second boot time. The ssd drive is significantly faster than the original drive that came with my late 2012 mac-mini. This is my first post and I wasn't sure how to post this as a tip. I have another tip regarding usb 3.0 hubs.

Im attempting to start up from OSX 10.4.9 back up disc on my Macbook 13inch but it starts up and am able get to utilities then disk utility but my internal drive doesnt show in options on left can anyone help ?

Hi all my trusty macbook 13 inch 5 years old has let me down get a box with question mark in it when i switch on , so apple support tells me to try ans start by back up OSX 10.4.9 disk the built in drive doesnt work so i am using an external toshiba drive .
I switch on holding down c key an apple logo comes on and it starts up im able to acess utilities then disk utility but in the options on the left there is only the Backup disc and the external drive showing my internal mackintosh drive wont show so i cant move further any help

If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

Disk Utility - Erasing a hard drive using MS-DOS (FAT)

Hi all,
I have recently purchased a 500GB external hard drive. I have used Disk Utility to format the drive from NTFS to MS-DOS (FAT) so I can use it with Windows PC's as well as Mac's.
My issue is this.
I copied a 1.16GB file over Firewire 800 to test the speed and then deleted it. After deleting the file the info pane still reports that 1.17GB of the drive has been used.
Why is this?

Did you remember to empty the trash can? If not, the file is in the hidden directory .Trashes on the Windows drive. You don't reclaim the space until you empty the trash.

How to use disk utility with mavericks

Since I upgraded to Mavericks via download, how do I run disk utility on the startup drive? In the past I'd restart my computer with the system disc but that's not an option. So what's the procedure now? Thanks in advance.

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Yes. I'll post a link to instructions. Be sure to create a full reliable backup before you begin (don't just do the backup, test the backup to be sure it's good), and the only application that should be running until the process is complete is Disk Utility.

Some people have problems resizing partitions because of the hidden Recovery HD partition. It sometimes gets in the way because Disk Utility can move it "up" but cannot move it "down".

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.

How does disk utility decide which optical drive bay to open for burning?
I have two drives in a MacPro and both have the same capabilities (DVD-RW). Why does it sometimes open the lower one, and sometimes the top one?

If I read your reply correctly, Erase and Zero Out free space shouldn't elongate the process, because there's no read occurring.
The drive will not be Mounted while Disk Utility works on it, so it will not be on the Desktop. But ask Apple System Profiler \[ About this Mac > More Info > Serial ATA ] if the drive is still THERE . If it cannot be seen, you have your answer -- the drive dropped out of sight while being tested -- Bad Drive.
Well, now I am confused. It's a FW800 drive. It's on the Desktop. And it appears under FireWire in System Profiler. AND Disk Utility shows a mount point. But the Unmount and Eject buttons are grayed out.
Will the drive be mounted if it fails to respond to Disk Utility? That doesn't seem to make sense.
How do I determine its status? It appears to be stuck at "1 day, 5 hours" but it'll take an hour for that to change. I think it's been that long since I first noticed the time.

I have backups on this drive. If I click "Repair Drive" will I lose the data on the drive?

Using disk utility with Time Capsule backup disk

When backing up, i get an error msg that tells me to run disk utility on my backup drive. It says it's having problems coping files. In Disk Utiltiy, I don't see a way to choose the time capsule backup drive but only the hard drive on my laptop. Help pls.

The error message is fundamentally stupid. You cannot use disk utility on a network drive.
You can however fix or test the sparsebundle which is the virtual disk file TM creates on the TC.

Using Disk Utility to erase Hard Drive

Hi All
I just bought a new external hard drive and am using Disk Utility to erase and format it. I did not know for sure if erasing the hard drive was the right thing to do. Anyway I set up the Volume as follows from the mac help instructions:
1.format OS extended journaled
2.Install OS9 disk driver.
3.("Zero all data" and "8 Way Random Write Format"). So it has been running for about 3 hours now and is only 1/8 of the way writing 0's to disk.
My question is should I continue on and just let it finish up? At the rate it is going It might be done by sometime tomorrow.
Or can I stop the erasing process without hurting the hard drive.
Then start disk utility erasing the hard drive without this Zero all data.

Just to confirm your impression, S. Frigolett: yes, everything should be fine now.
Zeroing a drive is advisable if you have reason to believe there may be bad data storage blocks on it; zeroing identifies those blocks and prevents them from being used (because using them would result in lost or corrupt data). A simple erase doesn't do that, but on a new drive straight from the factory there is no reason to think it's necessary.
The 8 way random write option is for people who have extremely sensitive data to erase from a drive that may pass into other hands, and who want to be sure that no one short of the NSA will have any chance of recovering any of that data. A new, empty drive has nothing on it that even the NSA could recover, so there's no reason to erase it that thoroughly.
