Disk utility with audio CD

I used disk utility to copy non-commercial audio CDs to dmg files. I expected the dmg files when opened to be recognized by the Finder as audio CDs, but they are not. Instead I get a removable disk image with aiff files.
If I want to convert these back to audio CDs, what is the best way to do it? Should I just have Disk Utility burn the dmg to a new disk or would it be better to mount the dmg file, drag the aiffs into Toast, and have Toast create/burn a new audio CD?
The CDs are live recordings of a high school marching band competition and I would like to try and keep the originally recorded quality.

The best way to make a copy of an audio CD is to make a disk image with Toast (since you have it), not Disk Utility.
Given that you have AIFF files and not the original disc, you can use Toast or iTunes to burn a copy. The quality of the tracks will be identical to the originals. One thing that will get lost is the length of time in the gap between tracks, since you have only saved the tracks themselves. You can also get the order of the tracks rearranged it you're not careful.
For the curious, audio CDs don't have files on them--the tracks are just streams of bytes. The Mac OS presents the tracks as AIFF files for your convenience, and that's what Disk Utility uses.

When burning iso with disk utility, the audio is off!

I have an ISO file that works fine when I mount it or watch it on VLC. If I burn it using windows (in parallels) it is fine...
But when I burn it with disk utility, the audio is off by a second or so. I can't figure this out since it is a disk image. there shouldn't be a way to dissociate the audio. I did have a previous version of the iso file that was off.. Is it possible that I am trying to burn an iso file and it is burning a mounted version from before (even though I am choosing this from the finder?)
Any thoughts or suggestions?
I though macs just work. Seems a bit more complicated.

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

I try start disk utility it only says: "You can't use this version of the application Disk Utility with this version of Mac OSX. You have Disk Utility 12.1"

To do a Reinstall of the OS boot to the Recovery HD, Command+r key at startup, then select Reinstall Mac OS X. the files will be downloaded from the internet and then the instal will begin.
With Mt Lion it is also available from the Mac App store in your Purchases area. You may be able to download it and then nmanually starting the install while booted to Mt Lion.
But I'd normally use the Recovery HD as that takes the installed OS out of the picture.

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Check that you have the current version of Disk Utility.

Format a 3TB HD using Disk Utility with Yosemite?

Can a 2014 Macbook Pro running Yosemite format a 3TB HD intended for an external case using disk utility? I've had issues in the past with a 2010 Macbook Pro and am hoping its now not an issue.

There should be no problem. There might be a problem if the given HDD has some proprietary software installed by the manufacturer.

Ibook G4 14": "?" at norm bootup, no HD in Disk Utility with CD bootup

Model G4, 14", OS 10.3.4, Model A1055. Date on label is 2003.
Two brand new hard drives have been put in this computer, with the same non-result. Hard drive info at bottom.
Symptoms (with either HD installed):
1) Flashing question mark and 'face' folder alternating on grey screen on normal boot.
2) Machine will boot from CD disk 1 "Software Install and Restore 1 of 1," and will progress through installer (select language, then installer, then software license info, then to destination). There is no destination listed. It does not recognize hard drive.
3) The Disk Utility does not list the HD. Only the CD-Rom is listed.
4) Holding "option" down after first chime on boot-up brings me to a screen with a "reload" icon and an arrow (pointing right) icon. Clicking either produces no result, but there is a stopwatch icon for a brief period after clicking the reload icon.
What I've attempted:
1) listening to hear HD spin up (it does)
2) The fan is not running noisily (it is normal),
3) PRAM reset (Commandoption+Pr), Pressed before power, then held through three chimes before releasing (no difference),
4) Holding "option" button to get to a menu screen (it never comes -see above description),
5) Resetting PMU (computer off, press shiftoption+ctrlpower, then release all. Wait 5 seconds and press power. Same dang flashing icons.
6) the MacStore Genius. He connected a FireWire external drive to the FireWire port, and it booted fine. He said "bad hard drive," and insisted that the logic board is OK, so I bought the second hard drive and installed it.
Question: How on earth do I get this computer to recognize the HD is installed?
Many threads refer to these symptoms as meaning the HD is "toast", but I have no reason to believe I'm one in a million who has two bad - brand new - hard drives from different manufacturers.
I've read all the "reflow or shim the (video) chip" threads, but this does not seem relevant either - I see video output (and shimming to place pressure on the chip did nothing when I tried it).

HD info:
a) Hitachi hts541680j9at00, 5400 RPM 80GB ATA IDE, and
b) Western Digital ATA IDE 160GB 5400 (installed, and further info inside machine - bought at "We Fix Macs" in Palo Alto, CA for this machine).

I'm sorry if this is the obvious question, but did you format the drive using Disk Utility before your OS install, Mac OS extended (journaled)?
If so, it is possible that you have a bad hard drive cable/ribbon or a bad connector. I had a bad HD cable on my iMac G5 that was giving me problems like this. If you have the iBook apart again, check that the logic board HD connector is also pushed all the way down tight.
Anyway, those things come to mind. Someone else may have a different take on the matter. I hope you get it figured out.

I'm sorry, I see that the HD is not even recognized in DU. After you boot with the install DVD and just after your language selection, If you open DU at that point you should be able to format the drive by choosing "Partition". This is before you begin installing. Does it not give you a chance to select the drive at that point?

How to use disk utility with mavericks

Since I upgraded to Mavericks via download, how do I run disk utility on the startup drive? In the past I'd restart my computer with the system disc but that's not an option. So what's the procedure now? Thanks in advance.

Restore Multiple Partitions Through Disk Utility With AppleScript?

Hi!
I need an AppleScript to restore a bunch of partitions from a master drive to a stack of external target drives. I don't mind partitioning them 1st, if necessary.
The master drive has 16 partitions, all equally sized, and I'd like a script to run that will have Disk Utility to just go down the list restoring each partition to the matching 16 partitions on one of the target drives.
Anyone know of or have anything l could use for this? Any advice on making this script? I'm not an advanced AppleScripter. And finally, would there be any way to have the script partition the target drives as well?

Sure - disk0 refers to the entire disk and all its partitions. The s denotes a slice (aka partition) on that disk.
So disk0s4 refers to the fifth slice/partition on disk0 (slices are 0-based, so disk0s0 is the first partition).
Note that the boot volume is commonly disk0s2 - the third partition since there's likely a partition map and a EFI boot partition before the actual boot volume. You'll need to look at the partition map of a sample disk to work out what the appropriate numbers are.

Erased disk utility with flashing folder question mark

My macbook pro retina came with Mountain Lion which was later upgraded to Mavericks. I recently decided to sell it and followed instruction on "OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X" (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243).
After completing the erasing steps in Disk Utility, i moved on to Reinstall OS X. But the system showed up as Mavericks and asked for my Apple ID. Because i didnt want it to link with my ID so I looked up this other method (https://discussions.apple.com/message/23898740#23898740) which tells me to restart holding Command-Option-R.
So after i "erased and quit disk utility" before logging into my Apple ID on the "reinstall os x mavericks" screen, i couldnt find a restart button, so i hold the power button on the keyboard to force off the computer. After i turned the computer back on, i got a FLASHING FOLDER WITH A QUESTION MARK.
please help!!!

Your Mac must be linked to your Apple ID. It's noted in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Password
? on boot means your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Startup your Mac while holiding down the Option key.
That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the starutp disk, (v10.9)
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac

Disk Utility with an SSD Drive

Hello, I just updated my iMac with a brand new Samsung SSD drive. The drive speed is amazing now.
I ran Disk Utility to check that everything is fine, but got this message:
File system check exit code is 0.
It doesn't show that the drive needs repair, but neither shows like in past that de test went OK.
Should I be worried?

Disk utility with two burners

When I use disk utility to burn DVD's it asks me which burner I would like to use. Both of them show up with the identical name. Is it possible to rename the burners so that I can more easily tell which is which?

Bummer! Like you hard drives they should mount in a particular order although I've noticed like you, my drives don't always do that. One option you have is if you know someone else with a Mac Pro and a different SuperDrive manufacturer you can ask them to swap a drive with you. That way you can always tell which one is which.

Using disk utility with Time Capsule backup disk

When backing up, i get an error msg that tells me to run disk utility on my backup drive. It says it's having problems coping files. In Disk Utiltiy, I don't see a way to choose the time capsule backup drive but only the hard drive on my laptop. Help pls.

The error message is fundamentally stupid. You cannot use disk utility on a network drive.
You can however fix or test the sparsebundle which is the virtual disk file TM creates on the TC.

How can I burn a disk image using disk utility with an external device?

I am trying to burn a disk image on DVD using disk utility in OS 10.3.9.
When I click the 'burn' button only the internal CD-writer appears allthough an external DVD-burner is connected via USB 2.0.
Does anybody have an idea how to make disk utility recognize the external device?

Bring up the disk utility with new hard drive

My hard drive died, completely dead! I have a Macbook Pro 15" i core 5 and I just installed a new drive. I have my macbook backed up to a WD My Book Live. Is there a command option that i can use to tell my macbook to load from a back up? I also have a Snow Leopard CD i bought recently but it won't boot from that. It looks like it does, it shows on the start up screen when i press the option key but i selected it, nothing really happened. I just heard it spinning for a little bit.

If you created a Time Machine backup from Mac OS X 10.8 or newer, connect the drive containing it and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you created a bootable clone of any Mac OS X version, connect the drive containing it and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you can't boot the computer from the backup, you'll need to use a Mac OS X install DVD or Apple's Internet Recovery system(on eligible Macs, press the Option, Command, and R keys at startup) to restore it, and if needed, install an OS.
