  • Disk Utility can't repair disk; unable to create image

    Hi all,
I had posted a couple days ago because my MBP (2011, 1 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5) was running very slow. I ran EtreCheck, and it turned out that my HD had a number of errors. The next day, before I could back everything up, I had the grey screen on both safe mode and regular mode.
I tried Command+Option+P+R and it brought me to the Utility screen where I was able to run Disk Utility. I tried to repair, but the disk was unrepairable. I then tried to create an image of the HD on a new 1TB external drive, but when the progress bar got to about 50%, it failed. I tried this three times and it failed each time. The error message each time was "Input/Output error." Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could possibly back up my HD, or is all lost?
    Here's a pic:

Booted into the Recovery Partition, try Disk Utility/Restore to copy the files to an external drive. Note the warning that this will reformat the drive, meaning any data on the drive will be erased.

  • Disk Utility: after creating the .DMG (compressed image) When "scan image for restore" finishes it displays "unable to scan (internal error)". Since the process was scanning for about 1 hr is this a fake warning?

External 500GB drive is partitioned with 400GB for Mac OS extended (journalling) and 2nd partition formatted today as "ExFAT".
Yesterday I tried to create a disk image of my HD to no avail - this was compressed on a FAT partition. I got a warning after running the <scan image for restore> saying "unable to scan (internal error)"
I rang Apple support who suggested formatting a partition as MAC OS extended (journalling) and choose to save the image as "read/write'. The image process stopped writing at about 200GB and then the file size jumped to 499GB (ie the size of the HD). But the process did nothing for about an hour so I foce quit disk utility (as suggested by apple support)
My current attempt was to format the external drive again; this time with a 400GB Mac OS extended (journal) format; plus a 100GB ExFAT format partition. The new image was created after about 2.5hrs with a compressed size of 149GB. However, after running the "scan image for restore" facility I got the warning message "unable to scan filename " (internal error). The process was scanning the image file according to the progress bar - this took about hour - thus the warning is a puzzle.
If anyone can say more about this error I would really appreciate knowing tips for using disk utility. The screen grab is below.
"unable to scan filename " (internal error)
    thanks

Thanks for a quick reply <baltwo>. You’ve answered that it is not a fake message!
fyi: I thought that I would use my external Buffalo for two purposes; namely the smaller ExFAT partition for copying stuff to my win7 netbook. The larger partition was to be used as my imac image of SL. So this was my first attempt at using disk utility - the idea being to hold an image backup at another location. Plus I now have the Lion thumbdrive ready to upgrade from SL and so being cautious wanted to have a SL image backup
Anyway I followed the apple instructions using my mac 10.6.3 install DVD but it would appear from other discussions that <unable to scan (internal error)> is not unique to me.
I’ll get back to apple telephone support for further advice.
I would though be grateful for an “idiots’ guide to making an image backup of my internal HD that runs SL 10.6.8
eg should I have just one partition on the external USB drive? format it as Mac OS extended? create the image as compressed or read/write? Basically I’ll do whatever will work!!
    thanks again

  • Disk Utility to create disc image?

    Hey everyone
I'm not too familiar with disk images, however my main goal is to capture the best quality video from a normal video dvd and then edit that video in final cut. I was told that possibly burning the disc and making a disk image would be the best way. If anyone can tell me the best way to capture video from a dvd (most likely copyrighted) to be edited in final cut I'd greatly appreciate it. If anyone is wondering I have a school assignment where I need to make a new trailer for a movie of my choice.
    Thanks!

We cannot discuss any methods of acquiring copyrighted materials here. However, to create a disk image, go to:

This official [Apple Tip|http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/lockyourdata.html] will help you.

  • Using disk utility to create a disk image then burn to an external drive

I have an iMac which does not have the ability to burn my iDVD projects to a DVD. Can I save my iDVD proj. to a disc image? Then write that image to an external DVD writer via Disk Utility?

This is from _Disk Utilty Help_. Erasing a disk is the same as formatting it. These directions are for Tiger; check this topic in Leopard to see if there is any difference in the directions.
    +_Erasing a disk or volume_+
+You use Disk Utility to erase disks and volumes.+
+Erasing a disk deletes all the volumes and files on the disk. Erasing a volume deletes all the files on that volume, but does not affect other volumes. Erasing a recordable disc, such as a CD-RW or DVD-RW disc, creates a blank disc with no formatting.+
+IMPORTANT: If you have any files you want to save, be sure to copy them to another disk before you erase the disk they are on.+
+Usually when you erase a disk or volume, Disk Utility erases only the information used to access the files on the disk, not the actual files. Because of this, the erased files can be recovered. If you want to erase a disk so that the files cannot be recovered, you can select security options to write zeros over the disk space.+
+If you want to erase an external disk, connect the disk to your computer.+
+In Disk Utility, select the disk or volume in the list on the left.+
    +Click Erase.+
+Choose a format from the Volume Format pop-up menu. Usually you will choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).+
+Type a name for the disk or volume.+
+If you're erasing a disk and plan to use the disk with Mac OS 9, select the checkbox to install the Mac OS 9 drivers.+
+You do not need to install the Mac OS 9 drivers to use the disk with the Classic environment.+
+If you want to erase the entire contents of the disk by writing zeros, click Security Options, then select the option you want and click OK.+
    +Click Erase.+
+To erase your computer's startup disk, you must start up from another disk. You can use your Install Mac OS X disc.+
    What does "journaled" mean?

  • Disk Utility to Create a DVD from an image

I get stymied when I try to us a diskimage as a source to make a DVD. I have a new DVD-R and it always wants to erase the disk, I cant get past that screen after I choose the drive as the destination. It wants to erase the disk but says it cannot erase this disk. There is noting in the help file to shed light on what to do. How do I make a DVD from a disk image ceated with iDVD?

I'm not sure how you are doing it but it should be done as follows. open Disk Utility and drag the disk image to the left pane in DU just below the volume list. then select the disk image in DU and press the "burn" button in disk utility toolbar.

  • Using Disk Utility to create a partition on an external drive

    Hi Everyone
I have a 250gb external HD drive which is currently split into two partitions of Fat32. I'd like to use this drive for storing images of OS X, but when I tried to create an image using the OS X startup DVD, I was told that FAT32 didn't allow large enough file sizes (or something along those lines) in order for me to backup my OS X.
Disk Utility appears to offer the ability to split partitions on the external drive, i.e. I can select the largest of the two partitions and choose to split it into two 96gb partitions. However, will this be a destructive partition process, and can I reasonably expect my external hard disk to be reformatted with a 96gb Mac OS X formatted partition whilst still keeping two FAT32 partitions and all the data that resides on them?
    Any help is much appreciated!

You will not be splitting existing partitions. Instead, you will be creating a new partitions from scratch.
Run Disk Utility. Select the hard drive to be partitioned. Make sure you select the hard drive in the sidebar, not the volume indented below the drive. Go to the Partition tab. If you want one or more of the partitions to be MS-DOS, you must first click on the Options... button. Select the Master Boot Record option and OK. Select Volume Scheme of 3 Partitions. Now set up your three new partitions as you want them, in terms of size and format. For the Mac partition, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.

  • Using macbook pro OS X ver 10.7.5 Trying to burn photos to a dvd but disk utility wont allow me to select photos to burn

I have a macbook pro using OS 10.7.5
The Disk Utility asks to select files to be burned. I have inserted a DVD however I cannot select the files as they are dimmed as is the "burn" button.
How can I easily burn photo files to a dvd?

Create a new folder on your Desktop. Drag the photos you want to burn to the DVD into this folder. Open Disk Utility and select New > Disk Image From Folder from DU's File menu. Locate the folder in the File selector then click on the Image button. Enter a Save name and location in the File selector. From the Image Format dropdown menu select the desired format. If you want the DVD compatible on Macs and PCs then select the Hybrid option. Set the Encryption option to None.
This will create a disc image in the location selected. The disc image may then be burned to a DVD.
Or, from the Finder's File menu select New Burn Folder. Drag the photos you want to burn into the Burn Folder created. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the Burn Folder and select Burn "Burn Folder" to disc from the context menu. Follow onscreen prompts.

  • Disk utility wont partition

hi, i have an external firewire drive that i need to be mac os standerd to boot os 8.6 on a pre g3.
disk utility in mac os 10.4 and 10.3 it looks like it partitions it fine (no error messages) i named the drive 6500 and partition it as mac os standerd. what it does is partition it as mac os extended journaled, names it disk1s3 and it wont mount, i did this with an ibook g3 with 10.4 and an ibook g4 with 10.3, and with 2 differnet harddrives. and it does the same thing.
what it does when i press partition
what i tell it to do

How do you plan to install OS 8 without the CD? You'll need to boot that computer from a CD in order to install OS 8.
In any event if you try to use Disk Utility then you need to:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM then click on the OK button. Check the box to Install OS 9 Drivers. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Standard. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Disk Utility cannot prep a drive for OS 8.x, so I'm not sure if installing the OS 9 Drivers will actually mean anything for a drive with OS 8 installed. Furthermore, your OS 8 system must have the Firewire extensions installed otherwise it won't be able to boot or recognize a Firewire device.
This is why you really should be doing everything from an OS 8 installer disc.

  • Disk utility wont format external drive

    Hi all
I have a friends 1 TB toshiba external drive, purchased at office works. I am trying to format it for NTFS so he can use it to watch the movies he is copying on any machine, xbox etc..
using disk utility I am erasing the 1tb drive with the NTFS format option, then I am creating the partition with NTFS but after formatting, it is only allowing me to read. I have tried formating the hard drive with Mac OSX journaled and then creating the partition at 1tb with NTFS, but getting the same issue.
I am a little confused as I just did the same thing with my 2TB drive I purchased from Office works as well.
    any ideas?
    bret

Hi Bret.  I am not sure I fully understand the details of your problem - the mention of another drive (the 2TB one) confused me a little.  I'll try to help though because it doesn't look like anyone has had a chance to reply to your question yet.
As far as I can see, OS X doesn't write to NTFS formatted drives by default.  It appears you can enable it by altering the mount options, e.g. http://learnaholic.me/2013/11/11/enable-ntfs-write-on-mac-os-x-mavericks/
Alternatively, perhaps just formatting it as FAT32 would achieve your aim - although now that I check, it doesn't really look suitable as it has a 4GB file size limit and some of the movies could be over that.
    Hope that helps.

  • Disk utility wont resize/add/delete a partition (HD is part of a raid)

I have two SSD set in a raid 0 in my MBP 15" late 2011 (Mountain Lion 10.8.2)
    256gb Samsung
    120gb Vertex 3
My Vertex 3 is partitioned into 2 parts
    1.  70gb set in raid 0 with another 70gb partition in the Samsung
    2.  50gb dedicated to Windows 7
My Samsung is partitioned in to 2 parts
    1.  70gb set in raid 0 with the other 70gb partition in the Vertex 3
    2.  The rest of the space in this SSD is just for data storage.
The reason why I did it this way is a long story since it deals with issues in the optical bay SATA speed limitations so that's a different topic.
    So here is my problem:
I have two 70gb partitions set in raid 0 between the two SSD's, the 50gb partition that was in the Vertex 3 dedicated to Windows.  After a while I realized I dont use windows that much and wanted to erase that partition.  Erasing it was easy, but now with the 50gb space left over I try to use disk utiility to divide the 50gb partition into 2 parts and it wont let me.  The satus bar says "preparing to partition disk" for 30 minutes and it doesnt budge.
To make matters worse, I deleted that partition by clicking the minus sign on the lower right corner, and now that partition is completely greyed out.  When I try to press the plus sign to add in the remaining free space in my Vertex 3, it wont let me.  The satus bar says "preparing to partition disk" for 30 minutes again and it doesnt budge.
Does the 70gb raid partition in the Vertex 3 prevent disk utility from making further changes to the Vertex SSD?  I am pretty familiar with disk utility and know my way around it but I have my hands tied in this situation.  Please help!

    Things I've tried:
    1.  Booting from an extenral HD with Moutain Lion and trying to use DIsk Utility to make changes to the Vertex 3 partition, same thing occurs (it hangs for 30 minutes with no progress).
    2.  After I deleted the 50gb partition from the Vertex 3, it is now greyed out.  Now when I try to press the add sign in disk utility to add back that 50gb empty greyed out space to make it for free storage (choosing Mac OS Extended, journaled), SAME THING HAPPENS.
It seems as though once I deleted that partition from the Vertex 3, that 50gb space is now totally unuseable!
By the way, I dont have filevault activated if that info helps at all to diagnose it.

  • Disk utility won't image a music cd

i used to be able to do this. disk utility has the option of disk image from device is greyed out when i insert any audio cd. this is the same no matter which user logs into the computer or on my other mac -ibook. i am able to image any data disk or dvd. it doesn't make any difference if it is a new cd or a homemade cd - so this should rule out copy write issues.
seems like able "improved" something - i guess to prevent pirating. my teenage daughter is good on the flute and guitar, but isn't that good to have a lawyer and have things controlled by the music industry.

Are you sure you were able to do this before? As far as I know, Disk Utility has never been able to make a disk image of an audio CD. Maybe you were using a MP3 CD. Audio CD formats are very different from data CDs or DVDs. The number of bytes per sector is different, and the is no directory structure. The Finder tries to make audio CDs appear as a series of AIFF files, sometimes with song names, but that is not the way the data is written on the CD.
Use iTunes to import and burn audio CDs. If you choose Apple Lossless or AIFF in the "Importing" tab of the "Advanced" preferences, there will be no loss of quality.

  • Disk Utility not creating Mac bootable CDs

    Hi
I have a 2006 Mac Mini with a SuperDrive running Snow Leopard (10.6). I downloaded a Linux ISO and burnt it to a blank CD using Disk Utility (dropped the ISO on the Disk Utility window, then clicked Burn). The CD burnt and verified with no problems but when I restart, holding down the Option key, it does not see the CD and I'm only given the option to boot from the hard drive. Then, when Mac OS X loads it tells me it has detected a blank CD. The same CD works and boots perfectly ok in a Windows machine. The Superdrive itself seems ok as it can boot from a Windows XP CD.
Any ideas why this might be?
    Thanks
    Neil

Did the Linux disk come as a bootable Windows image?

  • Disk Utility wont startup

I'm trying to start Disk Utility (under mac os 10.4.8, intel) but it wont startup. It bounces one time in the dock and then dissapers.
I tried a copy of an other computer, but the same problem. I Repaired Permissions in the terminal. I've reset my P ram.
This didn't work at all. Anyone an idea?

    Wow, that's not good.
The first four bytes of a "Universal" Mach-O loadable object and/or executable should be (in hexadecimal representation, which is what the "0x" prefix signifies):
    <pre>0xCAFEBABE</pre>
but instead, it's saying that the first four bytes are:
    <pre>0xCC8B45D0</pre>
In other words, the internal data of the file has been altered or is otherwise incorrect so that it's unusable.
Before doing anything else, I would, if you haven't already done so, startup from your Install DVD/CD and use Disk Utility to make sure your disk directory checks out okay. Use the Verify/Repair Disk buttons to do this. How to repair this problem short of an Archive and Install is a bit tricky.
What exactly did you try copying from another Mac? That could work, but you need to make sure that you only copy it from a Mac of the same architecture: Intel-Mac to an Intel-Mac and PowerPC to a PowerPC Mac. Note that the Disk Utility application itself is most likely fine, there's no need to copy that. What you want to copy is the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/. Copy that "DiskImages.framework" folder from another Intel-based Mac and put it into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ folder on your (damaged) Mac. Replace the existing copy. (You'll need to click the "Authenticate" button to enter your password in order to accomplish this). Then try launching Disk Utility to see if it will launch successfully.
    Hope this helps....

  • Using Disk Utility to create a bootable clone

After searching around, I find that the Disk Utility Restore function is the safest way to make a bootable clone. I've tried Carbon Copy Cloner, but had some minor problems.
However, DU Restore always renames the clone disk with the same name as the source disk. This leads to problems, such as confusing Time Machine as to where it should back up.
Is it okay to rename the bootable clone volume, or does it mess things up when you rename a volume after it has been created? Is there any way to preset a name when using DU Restore?

CCC does not cause data corruption and has been put through a lot of testing. Be sure to check for updates. You should have CCC 3.1.
If you have problems, I would suspect corrupt files and don't rely on Disk Utility First Aid to find or repair problems. When you need something stronger, buy Alsoft Disk Warrior.
DU Restore does work, better now in Leopard. People use to forget to turn off "Ignore Ownership" which is now handled properly.
And always repair permissions afterwards before using, no matter what you use.
