hi, i have an external firewire drive that i need to be mac os standerd to boot os 8.6 on a pre g3.
disk utility in mac os 10.4 and 10.3 it looks like it partitions it fine (no error messages) i named the drive 6500 and partition it as mac os standerd. what it does is partition it as mac os extended journaled, names it disk1s3 and it wont mount, i did this with an ibook g3 with 10.4 and an ibook g4 with 10.3, and with 2 differnet harddrives. and it does the same thing.

How do you plan to install OS 8 without the CD? You'll need to boot that computer from a CD in order to install OS 8.
In any event if you try to use Disk Utility then you need to:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM then click on the OK button. Check the box to Install OS 9 Drivers. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Standard. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Disk Utility cannot prep a drive for OS 8.x, so I'm not sure if installing the OS 9 Drivers will actually mean anything for a drive with OS 8 installed. Furthermore, your OS 8 system must have the Firewire extensions installed otherwise it won't be able to boot or recognize a Firewire device.
This is why you really should be doing everything from an OS 8 installer disc.

Yes. I'll post a link to instructions. Be sure to create a full reliable backup before you begin (don't just do the backup, test the backup to be sure it's good), and the only application that should be running until the process is complete is Disk Utility.

Some people have problems resizing partitions because of the hidden Recovery HD partition. It sometimes gets in the way because Disk Utility can move it "up" but cannot move it "down".

Disk Utility: "Modifying Partition Map"

Good Afternoon all. Im not sure whether this is a problem or not but i have run disk utility to partition my hard drive, and as of now it has been running for over 24 hours.
700 Gb Hdd Partitioned at 487 ( Mac OSx ) and 210 ( Windows NTFS )
The 210 was partitioned by Bootcamp and xp is installed and runs fine
I am attempting to partition the 210 by 55 to allow for the inclusion of Vista
I ran Disk utility yesterday around 9 or 10 and since then it has been saying modifying partition map.
i dont believe it's frozen or has stalled because it responds and i have burned a disk using disk utility. however if i attempt to close it it warns me of damage.
so my issue is whether or not i should just wait it out or if there is something safe i can do. Additionally if installing vista there is a bad idea i would like to be advised.

It's most likely stuck and not going to finish. I experienced this once while creating a new partition for testing purposes. Force quiting will loose any unsaved changes including a partition that's being modified but it looks like your only option at this point. It should not affect your current Mac partition however I'm unsure if it will affect your XP partition. Boot camp works well but in general I would say it's not a good idea to try and re-size or split existing partitions that have data. To do what you want to do you could use Boot camp to create another partition but it would only take the space from your Mac volume. You would probably have to backup or make an image of your XP system then start over using Boot Camp to create the 2 partitions of the size you want.
FYI: You would probably have a better chance getting an answer for this question over in the Boot Camp forum.

Disk utility wont resize/add/delete a partition (HD is part of a raid)

I have two SSD set in a raid 0 in my MBP 15" late 2011 (Mountain Lion 10.8.2)
256gb Samsung
120gb Vertex 3
My Vertex 3 is partitioned into 2 parts
1. 70gb set in raid 0 with another 70gb partition in the Samsung
2. 50gb dedicated to Windows 7
My Samsung is partitioned in to 2 parts
1. 70gb set in raid 0 with the other 70gb partition in the Vertex 3
2. The rest of the space in this SSD is just for data storage.
The reason why I did it this way is a long story since it deals with issues in the optical bay SATA speed limitations so that's a different topic.
So here is my problem:
I have two 70gb partitions set in raid 0 between the two SSD's, the 50gb partition that was in the Vertex 3 dedicated to Windows. After a while I realized I dont use windows that much and wanted to erase that partition. Erasing it was easy, but now with the 50gb space left over I try to use disk utiility to divide the 50gb partition into 2 parts and it wont let me. The satus bar says "preparing to partition disk" for 30 minutes and it doesnt budge.
To make matters worse, I deleted that partition by clicking the minus sign on the lower right corner, and now that partition is completely greyed out. When I try to press the plus sign to add in the remaining free space in my Vertex 3, it wont let me. The satus bar says "preparing to partition disk" for 30 minutes again and it doesnt budge.
Does the 70gb raid partition in the Vertex 3 prevent disk utility from making further changes to the Vertex SSD? I am pretty familiar with disk utility and know my way around it but I have my hands tied in this situation. Please help!

Things I've tried:
1. Booting from an extenral HD with Moutain Lion and trying to use DIsk Utility to make changes to the Vertex 3 partition, same thing occurs (it hangs for 30 minutes with no progress).
2. After I deleted the 50gb partition from the Vertex 3, it is now greyed out. Now when I try to press the add sign in disk utility to add back that 50gb empty greyed out space to make it for free storage (choosing Mac OS Extended, journaled), SAME THING HAPPENS.
It seems as though once I deleted that partition from the Vertex 3, that 50gb space is now totally unuseable!
By the way, I dont have filevault activated if that info helps at all to diagnose it.

Disk Util wont read my .dmg backup

Because I changed my hard drive, I thought it was wise to partition the new one with Disk Utility so it would have two partitions so I could just make a .dmg from the Mac OS parition and the Bootcamp partition over to the new ones.
While it worked for the Mac OS one, it didnt for the Bootcamp one and I couldnt boot Windows XP anymore.
When I asked the Bootcamp Assistant to setup my system it said it wasn't happy with my partitions and need a GUID disk.
Since mine was in AFM, I had to erase everything on it and put it in GUID with a single partition.
Now, before doing this I had Disk Utility erase the second partition I did on the new drive, make the Mac OS partition the whole disk and used Disk Utility to make a .dmg backup of the drive.
Since I formatted in GUID with a single partition, Disk Utility decided it doesn't like my .dmg backup anymore.
I reinstalled OS X Leopard from scratch and tried to mount it but it says no valid filesystem inside.
I tried to raw copy it with dd in terminal on a USB disk but same thing, it won't mount the drive.
When I use the restore function in Disk Utility, it says error 254 cannot validate filesystem.
I used it once successfully to check it before erasing the master drive and now the backup won't work anymore.
I am very upset, this 90 gigs backup contains all my photos, music and files.

I had a 320Gb drive with OS X on one partition and XP on another.
I bought a 500Gb drive, I thought I could do the same 2 partitions and just copy over the OS X and XP partitions to have everything work like before.
But it didnt work so now I have a .dmg containing my original OS X partition that I would like to copy over to the new HDD but it wont work as the dmg has not filesystem in it according to Disk Utility and gives an error 254 when I try to use it with the restore function.
However, I used this very same dmg file once yesterday to restore the drive. It was fine except that the new drive wasnt set to be a GUID drive so it would only boot so far but won't get into Leopard, hanging one line before launching the login app (I have the boot sequence set as verbose so I could see where it hung).
And now the same dmg file isn't working anymore on the GUID formatted 500Gb drive.

Data loss Lacie 500GB external drive_ disk utility changed partition!

Details of problem. I have a 500GB Lacie mini hub HDD which is used with an iMac angle poise. Recently it has been playing up- unable to access folders/files etc. and since I know the PSU fails on these items (capacitors fail -5V and 12V go haywire- already fixed another one - I have a 320GB with a mac mini setup) I removed unit from the imac and connected in place of the 320GB lacie on the mac mini, using the known good PSU. The iMac is running latest 10.4 and mac mini is running latest snow leopard 10.6.1
The Lacie spun up and mounted OK and I was able to access all files folders with no issue, so since I was keen to make sure it was 'fixed' I ran disk utility. It ran and said it verified and then I realised I hadn't run repair so re-did this. Big mistake!
It did the same run and said no problems found, but it then said something like updating partition! Horrified I waited and it seemed to finish or had finished straight away. Not sure. I looked at folders and yes main 2 items in place, but nothing showing below this. ****. It got worse. I ejected and tried to reconnect and low and behold it says drive needs formatting now. Disk utility even shows this 500GB as having 2.2TB of space, which I see in other posts is another issue.
I have important data backed up elsewhere, but there are a large number of files I do not have copies of and suspect there is a way to recover these. I have since seen all the 'data loss' guest account issues and wonder if this is yet another bug in snow leopard.
Have tried running Techtool Pro 5.0.6 to see if it can see the data but its not seeing anything. Will try Diskwarrior and others, but may well shelve to see if apple gets an os update released for data loss issues.
Any thoughts on how to recover? Anyone with a similar issue? I am pretty certain this is not a failed hard drive as it sounds 100% normal. Thanks for any help or guidance.

Thanks for all the comments recieved. V.K. made me re-evaluate what I had proved or not. I was fairly certain (not 100%) that the drive mech was OK, because the psu had failed, but should have proved drive mech was actually OK. So I removed the mech (as USB abd firewire can't do SMART etc.) and hooked up to an old G4 Powermac. I then found that the SMART verified, but had forgotten the 128GB limitation on older macs. So removed and got a PC to hook it up and run latest IBM_Hitachi drive fitness and other diags. (its a Deskstar HD and I have had almost zero issue with these drives over the years.) It checks out fine, so I was correct in my initial thoughts, only the PSU was faulty.
So back to my initial suspicions that Snow Leopard or disk utility has screwed things up, maybe a bug, maybe not. And I did run verify first and it said it was OK, only when I re-ran the repair did it then do a "partition update" (or whatever it said - should have done a screen capture - searched apple but can't find listing of all mesgs avail. must be in developers site I expect). So I am back at looking at how to recover, if at all possible, but as Alsoft have said this is not something Diskwarrior can do directly. Files must still be there just partiton map is now in a ... needs to be initialised mode. Not that I will do that.
So I guess summary is possible bug/funny in 10.6 and/or disk utility.

may read up on partition map damage first, so I get a better picture of whats involved.

Disk utility wont format external drive

Hi all
I have a friends 1 TB toshiba external drive, purchased at office works. I am trying to format it for NTFS so he can use it to watch the movies he is copying on any machine, xbox etc..
using disk utility I am erasing the 1tb drive with the NTFS format option, then I am creating the partition with NTFS but after formatting, it is only allowing me to read. I have tried formating the hard drive with Mac OSX journaled and then creating the partition at 1tb with NTFS, but getting the same issue.
I am a little confused as I just did the same thing with my 2TB drive I purchased from Office works as well.
any ideas?

Hi Bret. I am not sure I fully understand the details of your problem - the mention of another drive (the 2TB one) confused me a little. I'll try to help though because it doesn't look like anyone has had a chance to reply to your question yet.
As far as I can see, OS X doesn't write to NTFS formatted drives by default. It appears you can enable it by altering the mount options, e.g. http://learnaholic.me/2013/11/11/enable-ntfs-write-on-mac-os-x-mavericks/
Alternatively, perhaps just formatting it as FAT32 would achieve your aim - although now that I check, it doesn't really look suitable as it has a 4GB file size limit and some of the movies could be over that.

Using Disk Utility to partition drive

After downloading a system update yesterday my mac mini hard drive is no longer bootable. The recovery HD is unbootable, too.
When I boot up using the install CD I can run Disk Utility and see that there are no problems reported with the hard drive, but I cannot repair permissions (No valid packages).
If I restore the operating system from the CD my only option is to erase the hard drive.
But what if ...
I create a new partition using Disk Utility?
There's loads of free space on the drive, but if I attempt to create a new partition will I wipe out existing data?
If I succeed in creating a new partition would I be able to restore the operating system there without erasing the hard drive?
Would it be possible then in some way to restore my user account data?
I'm just trying to avoid the hassle of re-installing my applications and recovering my data files from backup. It seems like the data is still all there on the hard drive except that something went wrong during the system update that renders the disk unusable.
Any help appreciated.

BootCamp nor' Disk Utility will Partition my Drive.

Alright, So Im back again, And this time I have a totally different topic.
Today I tried to Partition my drive to add another OS, to be specific, Windows 7 (Don't hate me! :P)
The first step I took was using BootCamp SINCE, It is for windows installation on Mac OS X.
WELL, I tried partition and BootCamp wouldn't let me, The Boot Camp Assistant will usually get stuck at the "Partitioning Disk..." stage, Or sometime it will say. "Partitioning Disk..." for about 5 minutes then a warning message will pop up saying, "Verification failed. This disk could not be partitioned. Use disk utility to repair this disk."
I hit okay, then go to Disk Utility, And try to partition my disk from there, I will select how big of a partition I want leaving about 6 gigs on my main partition. I hit "Apply" and then it starts to partition, but the only thing it does is, "Modifying the partition map" for about 5 minutes and then I get a warning message saying, "Partition failed. Partition failed with the error: Filesystem verify or repair failed." Im not really sure what this means, but after this, I try to Verify and Repair my disk. It does the "Verifying" stage for about 8 minutes and then tells me "First Aid Failed. Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed." In the "Details" box, this is what it says,
"Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume file count
(It should be 410899 instead of 410900)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 117223 instead of 117222)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Can someone please help me out here, All I want to do is make one stinkin partition for Windows 7! Whats going on here?!

If you are going to repair a startup volume then you must do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Your error suggests some major defect with the hard drive. If it cannot be repaired you will have to re-partition the drive. This will erase everything on the drive, so be sure to backup first.
Also, you cannot install Windows on a partition your create with Disk Utility. You must use Boot Camp Assistant on a drive with a single partition/volume using GUID partition map and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled.

Disk Utility wont allow me to check off "Master Boot Record"

Today I purchased a new Toshiba 3tb external harddrive, I am setting it up for use with both mac and windows however when i plugged it into my macbook (OsX 10.8) it came up as "Read-Only" So when attempting to format it in DU I continuously got an error saying "Invalid Request" I read around online and found an article which I thought was going to help me, which it partially did. I went into the partition tab options and changed it from MBR to GUID but now it doesn't show up properly in Windows without formatting it and when I try that it just goes right back to being Read Only for mac, is there any way to set it back to MBR or a go around to allow me to read and write on both systems?

The drive is setup as NTFS which is read-only to OS X. Do this:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT32.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Alternatively, you can purchase third-party software that enables OS X to both read and write to an NTFS formatted drive:

Disk Utility wont startup

I'm trying to start Disk Utility (under mac os 10.4.8, intel) but it wont startup. It bounces one time in the dock and then dissapers.
I tried a copy of an other computer, but the same problem. I Repaired Permissions in the terminal. I've reset my P ram.
This didn't work at all. Anyone an idea?

Wow, that's not good.
The first four bytes of a "Universal" Mach-O loadable object and/or executable should be (in hexadecimal representation, which is what the "0x" prefix signifies):
<pre>0xCAFEBABE</pre>
but instead, it's saying that the first four bytes are:
<pre>0xCC8B45D0</pre>
In other words, the internal data of the file has been altered or is otherwise incorrect so that it's unusable.
Before doing anything else, I would, if you haven't already done so, startup from your Install DVD/CD and use Disk Utility to make sure your disk directory checks out okay. Use the Verify/Repair Disk buttons to do this. How to repair this problem short of an Archive and Install is a bit tricky.
What exactly did you try copying from another Mac? That could work, but you need to make sure that you only copy it from a Mac of the same architecture: Intel-Mac to an Intel-Mac and PowerPC to a PowerPC Mac. Note that the Disk Utility application itself is most likely fine, there's no need to copy that. What you want to copy is the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/. Copy that "DiskImages.framework" folder from another Intel-based Mac and put it into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ folder on your (damaged) Mac. Replace the existing copy. (You'll need to click the "Authenticate" button to enter your password in order to accomplish this). Then try launching Disk Utility to see if it will launch successfully.

Recovery/Disk Utility/Verifying Partition

Hello and thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
My 1 year old started typing away as I booted up my laptop yesterday morning (MacBook Pro). Somehow she sent me into Recovery Mode and I can't get out. I haven't used Time Machine, I can't reinstall osx via the internet because my backup harddrive is the only one visible, and now (not initially) when I try to verify in Disk Utility so that I can back up via external drive the partition (disk0s2) has errors. I foolishly tried to find answers and terminal command fixes so I don't know if I've irreparable caused damage that way. The errors I receive when I try to verify and fix the partition: invalid content in journal; invalid b-tree node sizes; volume could not be verified completely; invalid content in journal; error: disk utility can't repair disk... M'aidez!

When I reboot this way (holding down Shift) I do get returned to Recovery Mode. In Disk Utility, here are the drives listed:
500.11 GB Apple HDD...Media

HL-DT-ST DVDRW
disk1
OS X Base System
disk0s2 can't be verified...I get these errors when I try to verify or repair:
Invalid content in Journal
Invalide b-tree node sizes

Using Apple "Disk Utility" to partition a disk drive

I have seen some incorrect info on the forums about partitioning disks.
You CAN do this with Disk Utility.
To do this will erase the new partitions you create, so BE CAREFUL.
To partition a disk, start Disk Utility and click on the DRIVE (not Volume) you want to partition.
The DRIVEs are the icons all the way on the left side of the Disk/Volume window area.
If you click on a Drive, the PARTITION tab will appear. Click on it and it's pretty self-explanatory.

It looks like the mountable image option only applies to NTFS partitions. The preferences interface does not show a choice for FAT32.

Is Disk Utility "shrinking partition" for a week doing a defrag?

And can I ever stop it, or will partition self destruct?
Summary:
2TB Partition, containing 1600-1700 GB (maybe 350GB free)
Attempted to Resize partion to 1.99TB (reducing size only 10GB) using DU GUI
Assumed it would take just a little while to move [up to] 10GB data into free space.
That was a week ago! External 2TB drive on USB2, activity light flashing big time, random, misc short pauses (no patterns so looks like it's really working) 24/7 ever since. Disk Utility says "Shrinking volume" with status bar about 60% complete and not moving since soon after beginning the process.
This archive wasn't backed up (stupid, I know). So I bought another drive to do that with, but wanted to do a block copy to save time and to do that the program needed the source volume to be a tiny bit smaller in order to fit my destination. (Stupid again, for the attempt before it was backed up. I should have just done a simple copy!) Yes, I've been kicking myself for a week now.
Some programs that do nondestructive volume or "filesystem" shrinking will do a complete defrag in the the process I believe. Is that what's happening here? Anybody know for sure? Can it really take this long with maybe 340GB free to work with? I can't think of anything besides defraging that could explain this behavior. Seems unlikely but could indexing be kicking in? How many more days/weeks/months might I have to wait? I really need this to be over.
If I stopped it, I wouldn't mind losing any one file (or a few), I just don't want to risk losing it all. The Drive is an archive of mostly media files. Many large files exist from 1.5GB to maybe 5GB, with few up to maybe 18 GB. Lots of small files too. All are rarely accessed and never edited (re-written) so I would guess there's not much cause for fragmentation.
Now to make matters worse, I use this computer for other things, and 3 days into the shrink, most of the computer froze. Mouse moves but nothing is clickable. Clock stopped updating. Can't bring up Force Quit. At day 5 I tried again and noticed the dock would appear and magnify, until it froze too. Drive still seems to be working with activity so I presume the shrink process is still alive. I don't know if it will survive to completion however. How bad would things be if I just powered it off????? Any other solution besides just wait for an unknown length of time?

UPDATE: After more than three weeks of continuous disk activity, power to the external drive was accidentally turned off. After rebooting the Mac and connecting the drive, all data seemed to be there, and was readable, and the drive was writable. I attempted to back up the whole drive at once with a Finder copy (no OS on this drive) but it failed partway through. A group of files copied with zero data, which I presume happened at the failure point with an incomplete write operation. A piecemeal copy worked however, and all data was backed up intact I believe. My guess is that some corrupted file caused all the problems (never located though), but it could have been a hard drive issue too. If I learn more I'll do one more update. But the point is, that simply stopping this failed shrinking process midstream did NOT destroy the partition or volume info, FWIW, although everywhere I looked on the web this prospect appeared very gloomy. Bottom line, shrinking a partition of data without a backup is still a very risky prospect, and I will certainly never attempt it again. I consider myself extremely fortunate that I did not lose it all, or even any! OTOH, stopping a shrink is not guaranteed to have the dire consequences that one would suspect. More testing would be necessary.
