Disk Utilization reach 100%

Hi Experts,
I'm using oracle 805, the SAS external storage use only for database. The external storage capacity is 2Tb and 60% is free. I check disk utilization using ST06 show 90-99, Kb transfered/s : 47,527. Then I check the processes in SM50, there is no heavy process, a lot of free work process. I check the avg. response time in ST03 seems normal, around 600-700 ms.
What make the disk utilization high?
thank you

Hello,
This monitor shows entire operating system performance data and you are only talking about SAP processes .
Have you check in op system task manager for any server process which could cause bad performance?

  • Root cause for 100 % disk utilization

    Hi All,
Whenever in one of the dailog instance disk utilization is showing 100% sap system is getting very slow, what is the root cause for 100% utilization .At that moment of time when I checked the CPU usage it showed 98% CPU idle. server is on Windows NT and around 13GB of RAM is always free.
We have only one drive in the apps server. Can this be the cause of 100% disk utilization?
    Waiting for ur frequent responses.

    Hi,
I have answered similar questions :
    [Re: Disk Utilization 100%]
as described above, one thing that cause 100% disk utilization is that writer processes (and read process too) is concentrated only on a single disk (equivalent to single volume group or single logical volume).
we can imagine that a large number of user hitting the single disk (where datafiles exist) on the same time with a huge transaction load.
if we can manage writable datafiles in several locations (equivalent to several volume groups or several logical volumes) where several datafiles exist, writer processes (and read process too) will be distributed to that several locations, so that each location (each disk, each VG or each LV) utilization may not reach 100%.
so it is important to design writable datafiles in multiple location in different disks to prevent 100% disk utilization.
one thing should be remember is to consult with hardware and storage vendor if there is any possibilities bottleneck or I/O issue on your hardware or storage.
    hope it help you.

  • ST06 Disk Utilization 100%

    Dear All,
My SAP PRD is 4.7 EE on Win2003 with Win sp2 on MS SQL 2000 Data Base with 4 GB of RAM.
The performance on the system is very slow and we have planned to go for an upgrade on Physical Memory. The DB resides on the SAN BOX and in connected wih Fiber channel from PRD to SAN (1 GBPS).
We see that the DISK Utilization in ST06 is always 100%. As a rule it should not be more than 50%.
I see that the CPU Idle time is always above 95%. check TOP CPU time and found that everything seems to be normal.
What all things do i need to consider to nail down the issue.
Advise me in resolving the issue.

  • Disk Utilization 100%

    Dear friends
We have problems of performance with the system SAP (HP-UX with Oracle 10.2)
The Disk Util is 100% and the GLANCE command shows that the oracleSID process is using a high disk.
The problem is when any process to access to

    Hi
we have similar problem few weeks ago. we are using HPUX 11.23 and Oracle 9.2.0.6.
many reason can cause this problem :
    -  write process (mainly) -- and read process too, that is not separated to some logical volume (or volume groups) but concentrated in one logical volume (or one volume groups). in this case write process will hit only in one LV ( or VG). to solve this, you must distribute write process into several LVs (or several VGs) so writer process will write evenly to the datafile in several locations. the same way when reading process from several LVs (or VGs) compared with reading in one LV (or one VG).
    - bottleneck in your I/O. you must discuss with your hardware vendor and storage vendor, if there is some bottleneck that causing this.
what have happened to us is broken index of the most table we have caused by system restore few weeks before. after we are doing index for suspected tables, our utilization in decreased.
    we are using command :
    sar -d 5 5
    to monitor disk utilization
and maybe nfile parameter (sum of files opened by OS at the same time) is useful to be monitored, using command :
    sar -v 5 5
    to monitor nfile parameter.
    hope it help you

  • 100% Disk Utilization

    Hi All,
Most of the time of of our application server is showing 100% disk utilization and due to this system performance is badly affected. Actually Apps server is having only one disk c drive and OS as well as SAP Application sits on the same disk. other apps servers are also having the same configuration of one disk. For all apps server we are using Windows NT and CI is on HPUX platform. How to resolve this issue?
    Pls help
    Regards,
    Prashant

    Hi Prashant,
The High Disk Utilisation indicate quite a few things lets discuss one by one.
    1. Here i could suspect the DB time may be high and i think there would be presence of expensive sql statements, so just check in st04.
    2. If you have Oracle Database then there is a chance of I/O bottleneck.
In the oracle session the I/O section is broken into subsections as
    follow:
High Average Response Time per Read Request
High Average Response Time per Commit
High Average Response Time per Buffer Busy Wait
High Number of Waits for Free Buffers
High Number of Waits for Buffers being written to Disk
High Number of Space Waits for the Log Buffer
    File System Response Times
So check the above mentioned part providers.
    3. In the operating system monitor of the database server also we can  find
the  high numbers of I/O wait. This value indicates problems in I/O. So check on this.
    4. And at last do monitor SM66 and if possible trace through st05 then we can
narrow down the problem why its going for Disk utilisation regularly. Try to find out the Report Name as well.
Finally analys the subsystem using external tools and still the problem is not getting solved the get in conatct with thehardware vendor of th I/O sub system.
    Thank you,
    Tilak

  • Disk utilization 100% for very long time - ntoskrnl.exe

I have HP ProBook 4530s running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Until recently it worked without any problem but since last week disk utilization has been constantly 100% immediately after laptop has been turned on and I have logged on with my domain user account (this
morning 100% disk utilization lasted for almost half an hour). In task manager ntoskrnl.exe is the one who is killing my hard disk. Is there any official Microsoft solution for this - I definitely want to avoid reinstalling Windows from scratch. I saw on net
this was almost common bug in Windows 8.1 but without any solution working 100%.

In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (Windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage (if available), CPU usage, Disk IO.
If your problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure yours as per the below snip
    Click Start
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called)
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

  • Disk utilization threshold in iseries

    Hello Gurus,
I have a SAP R/3 4.6C system over iseries V5R4M0. our disk utilization is near to 80% Im afraid that this increase utilization affect my system perfomance.
Exists one threshold for disk utilization?
My disk arm is near to 20% an now we dont have any performance problems.
    Regards,
    Ernesto Castro.

    Hello Ernesto,
in very small systems you had this in the past. Nowadays, this is typically no issue any more. You can run diks up to 90 or even 95% - you just should keep in mind, that this becomes risky as it might happen, that you reach 100% because of temp-storage and then the system suts down ...
=> You can run with that without issues, but should have a look for increasing the disk when it grows further ...

  • Windows 8.1 running extremely slow with high disk utilization

My recently purchased Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 with 16 GB and I7 processor takes 3 minutes to start new programs. Running programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF reader, etc stop in their track with every few minutes and show a circling
cursor. Task Manager shows 100% Disk Utilization all the time.
I ran McKAfee as well as Kaspersky to see if this was a virus/Trojan issue. Both came up with nothing.
At this point the laptop (though spanking new) is completely USELESS and I have no hopes of using it !!!!!
I noticed from many forums that I am not the only one facing this issue. The complaint count for this issue is growing in multitudes.
    Please help!

    Try these steps.
    Open task manager
Click on processes tab. You can see all the apps and processes that are consuming memory.
Click on top of column showing the memory. This will arrange them in ascending or descending order of how much memory is consumed.
Find the ones which is consuming maximum memory
Uninstall if you don’t need the program or app. Re-configure or re-install the software or app if it is an important one.
    Hope it helps.

  • Disk Utilization false alarms from EM dbconsole

    Hi,
I have a 10.2.0.1 instance on Windows XP. EM frequently reports disk problems that don't exist. Example below. The disk is no where near 100% so I don't know where EM is getting this. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a bug?
    ex.
    Name=op1t1tsr
    Type=Host
    Host=op1t1tsr
    Metric=Disk Utilization (%)
    Disk Device=1 E:
    Timestamp=Jan 27, 2008 2:31:18 AM CST
    Severity=Critical
    Message=Disk Utilization for 1 E: is 99.97%
Rule Name=Host Availability and Critical States
    Rule Owner=SYSMAN

No, E: is an internal drive where the datafiles for the database actually reside.
One twist however, is that my windows roving profile attenpts to map E to another location. On this machine this does not happen since there is a local E driver but I wonder if the EM agent is somehow confused by this. In the Windows explorer the E drive actually displays the mapped location name, but when you drill down you see the local drive.

  • Grid Control showing excessive amount of disk utilization.

    Hi Folks,
I understand that Oracle doesn't support their products 100% on non Oracle VMs, but I thought I might take a stab at it.
I decided to stick with a simple installation of Oracle Grid Control running on a Windows 2003 R2 32 bit os, here are the steps I took.
    1. Run Guest OS Windows 2003 R2 32 bit on a Windows 2008 x64 running Hyper-V (Yes I know why not EL5 running XEN, long story)
    2. Install Grid Control with Database and Agent versions 10.2.0.2.1
    3. Patch agent and oms to 10.2.0.5.0
    4. Some minor issues, but managed to get by those.
    - First off EM Website shows down, got to take a look at that, probably need to fix the beacon, not sure!
    Problem:
    - Grid shows that the host running em is over 100% disk utilization.
    - According to Metalink this is a known bug in Windows 2000 Performance Counters (not 2003?)
    - More specially Microsoft KB article Q310067.
    - Metalink Doc Id: 303788.1
    - Note, I'm running 2003 on a Hyper-V Guest, so anything can go wrong!
    The specific error is:
    Metric               Disk Device Busy (%)
    Disk Device               0 C:
    Severity               Critical
    Alert Triggered          Jun 3, 2009 7:57:54 PM
    Last Updated          Jun 4, 2009 3:48:48 PM
    Acknowledged          No
    Acknowledged By     n/a
Message               Disk Utilization for 0 C: is 587.86%, crossed warning (80) or critical (95) threshold.
    More info:
    - Guest is running on a Dual Quad Core Xeon System with 16 GB of RAM
    - Guest has dedicated 4096MB of ram
    - Guest has dedicated 2 CPUS
    - Guest is configured with a Virtual Disk (specifically partition c:\) to be on local Hyper-V disk array
    - Windows 2008 Hyper-V host disk array is in a RAID 5 configuration running 10k SAS drives
    - Windows 2008 Hyper-V host utilization is literary at most 5% (current is 1%)
    - Windows 2008 Hyper-V disk utilization according to graphs is showing 100KB/s usage (less than 1%)
Temporary solution is to turn off the metric, but not sure if that's such a good idea.
    - Note that 11g EM and 10g EM running on Hyper-V server had the same issue.
    - Note that 11g EM and 10g EM running without visualization had no issues.
    Any thoughts?

It may be related to Bug 8677212: BACKUP INFORMATION FOR SOME DATABASES SHOWS INCORRECTLY
Although bug info says it for HP-UX, I've also seen the same problem on Grid Control 10.2.0.5 running on Solaris.
You may want to apply 10.2.0.5.4 Grid Control Patch Set Update (PSU) [ID 1139563.1] to fix it.

1.Can any one tell how to trace this warning and where to check for this alert ?
2.what is the meaning of Disk Utilization for 0 ?
3.How to identify the problem and resolve the issue in this case ?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Vikash (Junior DBA)

    Hi Vikash,
This "Disk Utilization" metric actually points to hos busy is the disk device (in percentage) and not a percentage of disk capacity. As a matter of fact, in the 11.1. Database Control, it has been renamed to "Disk Device Busy(%)".
Regarding of the meaning of a disk busy, it is the percentage of time the physical disk is active. And it may no be a problem, as you can see at http://sunsite.uakom.sk/sunworldonline/swol-08-1999/swol-08-perf.html : "Complex systems can be 100 percent busy, but still have a lot of spare capacity".
On the other hand, to check how "full" a Disk is, the metric 'Filesystem Space Available (%)' can be used. This metric represents the percentage of free space available in the file system. Also, the Filesystem Size (MB) checks the total space (in megabytes) allocated in the file system.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Cris

  • DB Utilization reaching Max in BI

    Hi BW Experts,
In Our project, frequently we got a alert message saying that, DB Utilization is reaching 100%. In front end we are loading less number of records. But still every day we got a alert message. Can you please help me how to reduce the DB Utilization in Production. And also where to check whether DB Utilization is reaching maximum in %. Just want to know, is it because of Lookup code from big table of data ? Please suggest why it is occuring.
    Thanks.

    Hi Jalina,
    Please try checking the below:-
    I) From Basis End
       i) Ask them to check if DB backups are scheduled regularly or any issues with the same.
    II) From BW end:-
        i) Check the frequency of Data stored at your PSA level and how regularly have your House keeping Jobs to delete PSA , Data mart requests are running .
ii)There are huge tables " RSBATCHDATA" and "RSDTPERRORLOG" the Data in which  needs to be deleted since they occupy a huge space in the system,
iii) Check if your Cubes are compressed which will further help to reduce the utilization.
Please do revert in case you need any further details.
