Disk utlitity

I am trying to make a 1 gig disk image. I hit create image and create the 1 gig image using disk utility. When I load the new image and have disk utility open..disk utility freezes until I unload the image. I want to be able to format the new image into msdos format..but b\c of this setback I cannot.

I think we are all having trouble figuring out what wxactly you are doing or trying to accomplish.
Whatever you are trying to do or install, a G5 iMac is a PowerPC G5 CPU Mac.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will only install and run on much newer Macs that use Intel NOT PowerPC CPU chips. Snow Leopard WILL NOT WORK WITH YOUR iMac!
The disc shouldn't have let you install anything as there are checks the system CD/DVD looks for before beginning an OS X system install. If Snow Leopard disc, the first thing it checks is whether or not the Mac, in question, has an Intel CPU chip.
Are you sure these are Snow Leopard Discs and not just Leopard discs?
OS X Leopard is 10.5 NOT 10.6.
Are these grey discs or "Official" Black Apple retail system install DVD disc?
Gray colored discs will not work. Grey colored dics are the original computer specific discs that came with the computer when purchased. They do not work with other Macs.
Did you receive any other gray colored discs that say would say iMac G5 or something similar with this Mac?
If yes, you could try and see if that disc will install on your G5 and you would be able to tell us what OS X version it installed. The disc might even say what OS is on the disc.
If you did not recieve an OS X 10.5 disc to re-install OS X 10.5,
You will need to find/purchase an "official" black OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD to install an operating system onto your Mac.
Try to make clearer what you are trying to do and we may be able to give you more informed help.

  • My Mac book pro (2011) start-up goes straight to disk utlities and wont install mavricks.

    Hello,
         My mac boook pro 2011 wont start up to my internal harddrive. it will sit on the white screen for a bit before it takes me directly to the choose language then disk utlity and shows the;
    Time machine
    install osx
    get help online
    disk utlity
Ok so my harddrive is partitoned into two, but everytime i try to delete the partition drive, it wont let me. says (Macintosh HD2 cannot unmount please try again). And everytime i try to earse the free space, it wont do it as well. but its says it did.
Then i try to repair my disk but my verify/repair disc permissions is not choosable but the veriy/repair ARE choosable. i choose verify/repair option and it says everything is fine. but it still wont let me choose verify/repair disk permission. My Saftey Mode is not working ( circle with line through) so i cant fix that problem. I also done the reset PRAM/NVRAM and SMC and still nothing.
Ok the problem goes further. my Mac book pro came installed with Snow Lepord not mavricks but it wants to install mavricks instead. I put my internet into some single thing and it switched it to Lion instead of mavricks. but that isnt the problem (just thought it was weird how it switched OSX system like that) the problem is that it doesnt want to download install any OSX system. First it didnt let me get pass the choose install drive wondow. , then i switched my date in the terminal and was able to sign in but it wont download any OSX system, it would say (Something came up, please try again). My install cd wont work, keeps spitting it out. And trying to do an OSX system download wont work through this browser on disk utltity (not enough space on the drive).
I was deleting log files from my mac through the partitioned drive and i accidently deleted a system folder that had logs. i was wondering if this was the problem and if its making my HD fail ir is my HD done? and can i put Yosemite on a usb and boot it that way or burning it to a CD and doing a cd install?
Please i need help becuase i use my mac for film and editing and my mac wont boot to the desktop, just to this window. ill try to post picutres of what happens.

That you are getting the BONG is a good sign, it's unlikely to be hardware if you are able to hear that.
Start by running SW update. It's not that there is a specific fix, but when updating it may rewrite some system files which may get this going again purely as a side affect. Worth a go, and should not harm the system.
Try reset the PRAM - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Hopefully one of these quick fixes works, otherwise we'll need to try isolate the issue next - so if still having a problem, I'd try create a new user and login as that user to see if the issue persists (which will tell us if it's system wide or user specific)

  • I have Lion on an external hard-drive and I want to install it on the internal disk

I have Lion on an external hard-drive and I want to install it on the internal disk. How can I proceed?

I recently completed a clean install of Lion on an internal SSD. After wiping it clean, I used a thumb drive with SL on it to boot and then another thumb drive with Lion on it. It worked just fine. The only thing to be aware of is that if you use the thumb to install Lion from... it will not install a recovery partition and you'll have to use the thumb in the future.
That's what I wanted anyway so it's working out just fine. Good luck.
I should add... I used the SL thumb to actually boot from and used Disk Utlities to wipe the internal SSD. It does work and there are Apple posts that can guide you through the thumb drive process. I used copycat to create both the SL boot and Lion.

  • Disk Utilities not fixing permissions

On my 2.33 Intel Macbook pro, about 3 years old or so, running LION, 3gigs of ram
WHen I run disk utlities it does not fix a number of permissions even though it say it does.
I thought this was a hard drive problem so I purchased a new, 320 gig hard drive, still the same problem.
I ran tecktool pro 5, and same thing.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks
    Stan

That has been a topic of discussion for the past several OS upgrades.  Nearly two years ago, I went through excrutiating detail with Apple tech support "higher-ups" and despite what you're seeing, it's not a concern.  The bottom line is that you should ignore it.  I agree that it's annoying but there's no benefit in chasing non-problems.
Some six months ago, Apple produced this document.
Yeah, I know that you get a list of a bazillion permissions that were "fixed" but if you immediately do another repair, you'll see that they get fixed again!

  • Hardware Test Disk

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem with random freezes. I can boot up with my original start up disk and run disk utlities, ( no problems found) however when trying to boot my hardware test disk a message suggests that the disk is not for my machine. It is original and labeled. Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    iBook 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I see that you have figured out that you need the iBook G4 forum instead of this one and cornelius is helping you there.

  • Mail bounces a few times but won't open, other apps work.

OK, I searched the forums and can't find an answer related to this for mail (found it for itunes, safari, etc). I am sure this is a mundane thing but to my computer simple mind, I am stuck.
My husband ran a Safari update. Since then the mail icon bounces but will not open. All other apps work. I trashed (and emptied) all the Safari stuff. I ran disk utlities repair. I inserted the startup disk, holding key "c" and did a hard drive repair and I got nothing.
How do I get my mail back on track??? Anyone???
    Thanks in advance.

You have doe the Disk "Repair", which is the first (and harder) part. The second part is the "Repair Permissions". It is much easier because it can be done "live" in the running system.
Quit all other Applications and run Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive and check the SMART Drive status in the bottom margin for "Verified"
    Click on ( Repair permisions)
wait while lots of wacky message scroll by. These can safely be ignored unless they appear in RED.
    Quit Disk Utility
    try to start Mail again.

  • HT204074 Watching a TV series, purchasing them one Ep at a time. Anyway after watching Ep3 I purchased Ep 4 but got a call so my laptop i went into sleep mode. Just came back n now it says that 90 days

'You can download past purchases on this computer with just one Apple ID every 90 days. You cannot associate this computer with a different Apple ID for 67 days.'
What is this? It's the most frustrating thing, and I just wnt to scream 'I DIDN'T'. 23 days ago I did because I was unaware of the new 90 day rule.
But this time, i didn't do anything. I was watching a TV series, and I was purchasing the episodes one at a time (in hopes that this would encourage me to stop and go to sleep after i finished the next one). Anyway I had just finished watching episode 3 and purchased 4 and it had begun to download, when I left my laptop to go get something to eat came back n it had obviously gone into sleep mode. so had to continue the download BUT when I try to continue the download the 'message' pops up. I haven't signed out, it's purchased under j_akale, so I don't understand.

Frist tip, after installing software updates (I assure your machine started off with 10.4.2 and when you first used it, you were promted to update to 10.4.4.), go into the utlities folder (under applications) open disk utlitity and verifity and repaire disk permissions, this will greatly boost preformace and may fix your problem. (In fact do this once a week) Go ahead and run the Techtool (Applecare hardware test CD) and check for any problems. If these come up with nothing, I'd call Applecare and tell them what is happening. Applecare will cover you at any Apple dealer and some Apple resellers as well. Going elsewhere will kill your warrenty BTW.

  • So I made the Switch, but.... (this is a long a read)

    Hi Everyone,
I've been debating to switch for the past year now, and been visiting all the Mac forum sites. After all the hype and fun of Macworld, and after watching Steve's keynote on Tuesday, I decided it was the right time to buy. I bought a 12" iBook G4 stock from an Apple Store (not the closest Apple Store, but the second closest, which will be a factor as you read along), along with the Apple Care plan and a .Mac account.
3 days ago I booted up my iBook and was amazed at what followed: cool 3-D boxes flipping around, "welcome" in a variety of languages, etc.... I went through the complete process, then upgraded all the Apple software and started exploring Finder as well as a few aps. Around 30 mins into the experience, I noticed that the trackpad wasn’t really responding to my touch as the trackpad does on my friend's powerbook or the store's display iBook (by this, I mean that with my finger pressed on the trackpad, the cursor arrow still lagged a bit as I moved my finger; I even changed the speed of the cursor arrow under Preferences, but still experienced the lag). I thought nothing of it. "New computer, cold feet," I thought. "It will warm up soon enough."
I installed the driver for one of my compatible HP printers. Then I started to mess around with Safari. That's when I noticed that the ibook was bit slow to open Safari (the only things that were opened at the time were Finder and Dashboard, so I thought 512 gigs of ram would be enough to handle 3 aps at once....right?)..... played around with Safari, then closed it.
I went to open my Hard Drive, and doing that was also a bit slower than when I first opened it.
I then went on to install software for another compatible HP printer. At the last step, I got my first "spinning beach ball", and that ball kept spinning for minutes. At least 10 minutes. So something was not right. Using the key commands for Force Quit, the Force Quit Box popped open. But every time I tried to move my finger to force quit the application, the arrow cursor did not move. So I rebooted, pressing the power button.
Once the system rebooted, the final installation step for the HP printer appeared on my desktop. So I went through the same steps. Again, spinning beach ball for another 10 mins. Again, tried to Force Quit. Again, the trackpad failed to sense my movement, leading me to believe that the Fore Quit window froze, too. Again I had to reboot holding down the power button. (Am I wrong to think that the Force Quit box should respond as quickly as Window’s Task Manager box?)
Once it rebooted, I was able to uninstall the HP software, and I sent it to the traschcan. To end the day on a good note, I decided to move some photos and set up my desktop background pic. I am totally in love with the idea that my desktop background image will change everyday!
    so day 2..........
Started off much more promising than Day 1. I installed office 2004, but had a bitchy time trying to install VPC. After realizing that I really don't plan to use VPC on this machine (it's free software b/c my school has an agreement with M$), I just uninstalled the set up assistant. I was able to set up a wireless network in my lab via the Airport Extreme I got a while back. No problems there.
I went out to buy a Logitech wireless mouse (the one that's Mac compatible and boasts " up to 1 year" battery life). Went home and downloaded the driver for the mouse. No problems with the cursor movements at all; in fact I had had no problems with the cursor movements all day. I thought that ibook got over the problems it had the day before. Man was I wrong....
I installed Firefox and Palm desktop. No problem. Then my friend---the one with the powerbook--- called to see how I was doing. He then helped me set up iChat. Then he totally freaked me out when he "called" me using the voice feature. I was blown away.
But about 20 minutes in, I couldn't hear him anymore. Then iChat froze while I was having a total of 3 buddy conversations. At this time, iChat was the ONLY ap open, so I was little confused as to why my desktop froze again.
Again, I tried to Force Quit using the key commands, and again, the Fore Quit Box did not respond to my movements. So I rebooted holding down the power button.
Once the system restarted, I noticed that the cursor arrow started to lag in time compared to my actual mouse movements. I double checked by using the trackpad, and low-and behold, like the night before, the cursor was slow to my finger movements.
I decided to shut down for the night and hopped back onto my PC to converse with my powerbook friend as what to do next.
Then it hit me: my HP laptop was being MORE reliable than my new ibook!
Today is Day 3. To my disgust, my first post on AppleNova is not about how great my new ibook it, but rather a post for help. It's a little ironic that I am typing this up right now on my HP, not my iBook!!!
so, any advice? is this the "routine" experience for breaking in an Apple product? Where might have I gone wrong? Or is this the computer equivalent to a "lemon" car?
should I use the Deluxe disc that came with the AppleCare package? Or should I just call Apple Care anyway? OR should I just march back into the AppleStore and demand a new machine? If so, the apple store I bought it is 30 miles away, but the nearest Apple Store is 12 miles away (can I return it to the nearest Apple Store, even though that it is not the store I bought it from?).......
sorry that this is a long thread, but from reading the posts from this forum during the last 6-7 months, I got the impression that this community was all about helping other Mac users, and I'd like to be part of the Mac faithful even if I'm having a bad first time
I've heard everything from "it could be HP drivers" to "take it to the Genius Bar" to "reinstall Tiger" to "Use the Hardware Check".........
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   bought this brand new iBook --my first Mac--- this weekend

  • Can you work on iMovie from an external drive?

I am working on a iMovie with iPhoto pictures and footage from my Sony HD DVD video camera. My internal drive does not have enough space to complete the movie. I have a Lacie external drive which does have enough space. I have opened an iMovie project from the external drive but I cannot get any pictures or movie clips added to the timeline. iMovie acts like it is applying my pictures or importing my video footage but then when I press play or preview to watch what I have so far there is nothing. Also the importing video does not turn into clips on the right side of the main iMovie screen. Everything works fine on my internal. I guess to get right to the point I need to know how to bring in media to the external drive. Thanks

I have that problem with my LaCie with a Canon camera. Are you trying to import your film directly from iMovie to the LaCie right? Use disk utlities and partion it so it is in Mac format.
If that doesnt work then that means your camera and your hard drive are using the same bus. They are fighting over which port sends and recieves data. You might need a separate bus for the LaCie to work, even though all my sony cameras have never had a problem with it.

  • Macbook Pro (2.8Gz Intel Core i7) Crashing after installing 10.8.3

    Hi there,
After doing some spring cleaning on my computer and upadting it to the above I am incountering crashes (blackouts and auto reboot) mulitiple times a day. It mostly happens when i go to open any internet browser but has also happened when i'm previewing files using the space bar fuction and also a seemingly random time in Photoshop.
I've verified and repaired permissions through disk utlities and made sure the operating systen is up-to-date.
Below is the last report I recieved after opening chrome and encountering a crash.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how i can stop this plesae? I've tried to desypher what all the below might mean but it is at this stage i become a techincal novice!
Any advice / help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Can't edit track information in iTunes

I imported an audiobook CD into iTunes and then tried to edit it by changing "Music" to "Audiobook" under "options". But that option (and everything else) is greyed out so that the audiobooks are stuck in my music library. It doesn't seem to be a permissions issue - I opened Disk utlities and repaired permissions. I also opened the actual files in Finder and I already have permission to "read and write" - neither of these options worked. Any ideas?

I have been unable to change the media kind of items in my Music library until I go to the Store menu and turn off iTunes Match.  Movies, books, tv shows are not affected.  When finished editing, I turn on iTunes Match.  It takes about 5 minutes to match my 6000+ library again

  • Installed Maverick, Acrobat Pro keeps crashing

    Acrobat 10.1.8.
It worked fine for a few days. Now I can't open .pdf's.

Try runing Disk Utlities to Repair Permissions.
(You may have to do this while in Recovery Mode ⌘-R)
Next Run Fontbook  and check for duplicate or defective fonts.
    This Link might help: http://www.phillipmjones.net/Font_Book.html
Try removing Acrobat and reinstall and update (use the uninstaller)
Make sure you have your registration code and a current installer or current DVD.
(Since there no long is a Repair Install item in the help menu (for Mac).
    You might try going to
System Preferences > Users and Groups.
    Create a text Profile.
Then open Acrobat and see if you can open a PDF.
If you can then you have an issue with Acrobat components in your current Profile and need to fix the issues.

  • I have a power pc and trying to install snowleopard however i get a cant create image error -61 .. Please help

I go into the disk utlitity and all that is in there is the cd rom & the disc itself that shows up on the left side.. i try to create a new image and it defaults the size to 17 and whenever i try and create it i get cant create disk error -61.. how can i fix this and start with a clean install from the beginning

  • I turned on my system too early before the ups properly turned on n later i forcefully offed it by holding d power button n later when i turned it on its turnning off by itself

plz help me how to correct my error n i check for disk utlities n it showed me a error "key is not found" something n cant be repaired n backup files n re-instal os so wht to do?

Do as instructed. Backup the computer if the computer is still working. Then you will need to do ONE of the following to repair the drive:
    A. If you are using Snow Leopard.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    B. If you are using Lion or later.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If this does not repair the problem with your hard drive, then the drive may have failed and requires replacing.

  • My labeled files on my macbook pro won't stay colored

my labeled files on my macbook pro won't stay colored

Ok, in theory you cannot lock the hard drive, so, run Disk Utlities, First Aid, Repair Hard Drive again.  It should come back with a message that all is OK.  Then run Repair Permissions.  That often returns a lot of messages that are not actually problems, just grumbling by the system.
Then try a normal restart by clicking the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.  If you restart normally all is fine.
If not, then restart on the recovery HD again and try an Install Mac OS X and see if that succeeds this time.
