Disk vs tape

hi all ,
oracle 11g.2 rac 2-nodes with asm RHEL 5
which the best backup to disk or tape database size is 126G but the used is 16G???

There is nothing "Best" nor "Worst" in the IT. We can not say that tape/disk backup is more good/worst. If you google with "disk vs tape backup oracle" you may find couple of links mentioning pros and cons example : http://www.eversyncsolutions.com/disk-vs-tape.html.
For greater details you should read :
RMAN-Based Disk and Tape Backup Strategies: Scenarios
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/bkscenar.htm
So, this is answer of your post.
Now your next post, which is basically not a post; rather a new question, and this type of posts always makes members irritate. Why? Because you could mention all the details of next post in your first post, so that person who is going to help you may judge your question fully; anyway...
but i need to make full backup and incremental backup and apply block change tracking all of these not support in TAPE???And what docs are saying :
Location of the Block Change Tracking FileOne block change tracking file is created for the whole database. By default, the change tracking file is created as an Oracle managed file in the destination specified by the DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST initialization parameter. You can also place the change tracking file in any location you choose, by specifying its name when enabling block change tracking. Oracle recommends against using a raw device (that is, a disk without a file system) as a change tracking file.

  • Moving backed up file in disk to tape using RMAN

    Hi All,
    Is there a way in RMAN to move an already backed up file present in disk to tape?
    The scenario is as follows:
    RMAN backs up database to disk on week days initially. At a particular day, say during Saturdays, those backed up file (made on week days) in disk will be moved to tape (to clear disk space). I wish to know if RMAN has this capability to move the backed up file from disk to tape (FLASHBACK is not enabled in the database). This will help RMAN to restore the files from tape in case of restore/recovery. I don't want RMAN to take the backup on tape straight away.
    Oracle Database Version : 10.2.0
    OS : SunOS 5.10
    I'd be grateful if you can provide me with suggestions.
    Thanks,
    ...

    RMAN will not move the already backed up files.
    Instead you can use CATALOG START WITH option to move the files from disk to catalog.
    Schedule this as a job then RMAN will move the backup files.

  • Imac not booting, Able to get to disk ulility with snow leopard disk.  Tap on had disk, not given choice to do anything.  Information list that smart is certified and partition map is us formatted.  How do I get mac to start up again?

    Imac not starting up, keep getting white screen.  Using snow leopard.  Able to get to disk utilities with snow leopard installation disk.  Tap on had disk, not given choice to certified disk or anything else.  Information on disk states that smart status is certified.  Partition map I formatted.  Also tried to restore from back up, but get error:  not enough disk space.  Tried to erase disk, but unable.  What do I do next to get mac to start up?

    Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
    One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
    I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
    Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
    Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • Disk V$ Tape Drive for Rman

    Hi,
    Os : Aix,Red hat 4.2
    Db : 10
    We taking rman backup which stores in Tape Drive.(It took 11 hours, incremental 0 level).due to ORA-27030 & ORA-19511,we couldn't use Tape drive temporarliy.
    So we used disk for rman backup.(It took 4 hours to complete).
    Which is best storage(ie fastest) for rman backup /restoration whether DISK or TAPE?
    What are the factors determine it?
    Thanks & regards,
    VN

    What is more important to you, then choose. It's simple: tape is more reliable and faster drives. At a cost of not very high volumes, they are about the same per megabyte. It - http://www.allbackup.ru/articles/article6.html - is more less actually.

  • Backup to Disk and Tape

    Looking to convert our RMAN Tape backups to Disk using incr merge.
    RUN {
    RECOVER COPY OF DATABASE WITH TAG 'incr_update';
    BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 1 FOR RECOVER OF COPY WITH TAG 'incr_update'
    DATABASE;
    Then we want to backup all backupsets to tape for archive. So questions are
    1) How do you tell RMAN to only backup backupset that have not been backup up to tape already?
    2) Once a week, we would want to backup the full image copy "TAG 'incr_update'" to tape as well.
    Thanks...

    Thanks for the info... As a follow up question... I see some samples for IMB out there like so:
    run {
    recover copy of database with tag 'incremental_merge_backup';
    backup incremental level 1 cumulative copies=1 for recover of copy with tag 'incremental_merge_backup' database;
    What is the COPIES=1 for? Can't seem to find any docs on how it affect a IMB.
    Thanks..

  • Brarchive to disk - no tapes involved

    We are planning to implement a brbackup/brarchive solution as follows:
    1.  brarchive to NFS area on SERVERA
    2.  brarchive same files as above to NFS area 2 on SERVERB
    3.  delete those files successfully saved step 2
    4.  Backup to tape everything on SERVERA daily.
    5.  Archive files remain on SERVERA for 2 weeks.
    BRARCHIVE seems very restrictive when you want to do disk-based archives in that it doesn't allow -scd etc.
    It only seems to allow save and delete-save.
    What options are there for a fully disk-based backup solution?

    Not that I tried that,
    but "-ssd" works when two tape drives are given!
    May be if you specifiy both archive target dirs, "-ssd" will work for "disk" as well.

  • RMAN backup to disk vs tape

    AIX R 2
    Oracle: 10.2.0.4
    I have been testing rman backup strategies on a db in noarchivelog (development) using the following command:
    (*) note: if db is in noarchivelog then you must do a cold backup - have the db mounted but not opened.
    rman> backup database format '/a010/d01/bck/%U'
    I have found that rman will backup to disk about 2GB per minute. Now I want to test this to tape to compare metrics.
    Question: What configurations does RMAN need to write directly to tape?
    What are the backup steps to write to tape? Do I need to specify both the tape channel and also where the format output gets written?
    Thanks all.

    OK
    You need to install the Oracle driver for Tivoli (optionally sold with Tivoli) and install that in your Oracle software tree.
    Then you can configure your channels to write to tape (this is documented).
    For the rest there is no difference, although there are no directory names.

  • RMAN backup to write on tape and disk in the same time

    Hi all,
    I want to take backup using RMAN and to have the backup file in a tape and a disk, i know i can allocate channel for tape, or disk. My question is can i use the both disk and tape in an rman backup one time. I mean i want to have rman writing backup file in a local disk and a tape in the same time to have redoundant backup at a tape and local disk.
    If some scripts is there, it will be welcome.
    Thanks

  • RMAN to Disk (shared mounted file system) then secure backup to Tape

    Hi
    This is a little away from the norm and I am new to Oracle secure Backup.
    We have several databases on physically separate servers, all backup to a central disk (a ZFS shared file-system).
    We have a media server also with the same mounted file-system so it can see all of the RMAN backups there.
    Secure backup is installed on the media server and is configured as such.
    The question I have is I need to backup the file system to tape where all the RMAN backups live, I have configured the data set but I get file permission errors for each of the RMAN backup files in the directory.
    I have tried to change these permissions but to no avail (assuming it is just a read write access change that is needed - but this may be a problem in the long run). What is the general process for backup of already created RMAN backups sat in a shared area? I know its not the norm to do to disk then to tape backups but can this be done? I would have installed Secure backup client on each server and managed the whole backup through secure backup but this is not possible I must do the to tape from the file system, any advise and guidance on this would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards

    You can easily accomplish a very streamlined D2D2T strategy! RMAN backup to disk...then backup that disk to tape via RMAN and OSB. Upon restore, RMAN will restore from best media disk or tape based on where files are located.

  • How to move rman backups on tap from disk

    Hi,
    I have rman backup files on the disk, now how we can move these files to tap. is there any rman command or is there any script to move.
    Thank you!

    Do you use FRA (Flash recovery area)?
    If you use FRA then configure RMAN to take backup to tape. And backup fra to tape.
    RUN
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 TYPE ‘SBT_TAPE’;
    BACKUP RECOVERY AREA;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch0;
    If you don't use FRA then you can backup your backupsets which are on the disk to tape.

  • Which is better: Backup to agent/tape or disk?

    We have the option to install an agent from our backup application
    that would, I believe, perform RMAN backups direct to backup tape.
    Alternatively we can make RMAN backups to disk, and run a cheap
    file system agent and grab the disk based dumps. Is either method
    known to be a better solution? Using an agent/tape seems riskier.
    Thanks!

    File system agents are much cheaper than Oracle agentsDepends, you can also use OSB which is free as long as you use locally attached single tape drive.
    Having an extra LUN for disk backups is likely a cheaper solution than intricate processes for the direct to tape methodBut you can't compare extra LUN to tape because that extra LUN is also coming from the same SAN and all the backups are on the disks controlled by that SAN where as tapes are truly secondary backup place which can be managed totally differently and has no dependency on others means for some reason if you can't access disk backups tapes are always there.

  • BRtools Two-Phase-Backup to remote disk and remote tape drive

    Hello,
    i want to two-phase-backup a SAP-System to a remote disk and from there to a tape drive.
    Backup to remote disk works fine, but can i use brtools to write the backup-files from the remote machine to a tape drive that is connected to the remote machine?
    I'm using SLES 10 on both machines.
    I can't find anything on the SAP Documentation to this. It ist possible to backup to remote disk and to remote tape, but it is not clear that it works when in Phase 1 of the backup the files are written to a remote disk. It seems like i can only tell brtools to backup the files from a local disc to a remote tape-drive, is this right?
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards
    Phil

    Hi Nirmal,
    thanks for your answer.
    But i can do disk to tape Backups, when i choose "Backup of Disk Backup" from BRtools, i see a list of all Backups i wrote to the local disk and can write them to remote tape by using pipe as backup device.
    The only thing is, my Backups are stored on a remote disk, and from there it seems i have to write them to tape with cronjobs using a shell script. That's not my favourite solution, but it's ok.

  • How to create 800K disks for Mac Plus

    I've acquired a Mac Plus in good working condition, but it's just standalone. Eventually I want to network it, but for right now, is there a way to use my Mac Mini or a PC to create 800k disks for the Mac Plus? Things like OS upgrades and other software are available out on the net, but I can't get them to the Plus. I've tried a USB floppy disk drive on the Mini, but it only works with HD diskettes.

    sacsr,
    "Can I take MacPlus-appropriate software from the internet, burn it on a CD on my Mac Mini, and load it into the Mac Plus?
    Yes! : ) That simple. The Plus was the first 'business Mac' and I loved it until I got a dual floppy SE with an external SCSI HD and an excellerator card with a math co-processor. It was a very capable computer. But, as soon as you used a faster Mac, you never went back to the Plus. You could fix lunch while waiting for disk swapping to boot and load MS Word 3.
    What we are saying is that the SCSI bus on the Mac Plus has far more options available for someone shopping for resources.
    We have over 300 Macs of almost every model. We have been given over 100 floppy drives. We shop at government surplus stores and auctions. In all that stuff, we only have a couple of 800 k drives but hundreds of SCSI devices. They are SO much easier to find and are so much cheaper to buy and customize.
    If you can find a Macintosh 800K (M131) floppy drive, great. Then you also have the problem of finding double density floppy disks ( high density disks with tape over the hole are not reliable in the older drives.)
    here is a website with the whole list:
    http://www.mandrake.demon.co.uk/Apple/drives.html
    I remember buying an 800k floppy drive new in 1986 for several hundred Dollars. The external CD-ROM drives sold for $300.
    It will probably be much easier to find an Apple 300 or 600i CD-ROM drive that should read CDs burned in your modern Mac. Your original question was about floppies. The real question is "How do I get data from a new computer to an old computer." That question offers more possibilities. I am suggesting a better and cheaper alternative. Having fun with older equipment requires purchasing intermediate equipment.

I have no problem watching the disk on my computer, but when I try to import, a screen pops up saying that it is doing something to the unusable files, stops, then nothng is imported. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I not able to import from disks? Funny thing is I have no way of connecting the camera to the computer....no usb ports or fire wire port on the camera. HELP!

    .. I have a sony camcorder that finalizes disks so you can view them on dvd players...
    iM supports only import from miniDV, not these point-shot-play-DVDcorders-devices..
    Import from DVD:
    DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
    for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

    Backup of Non VSS Datasource Writer on <PROD server FQDN> cannot be completed. DPM could not find a valid recovery point on disk. (ID: 30126)
    All VMs on each of the affected servers have recovery points but
    When performing disk to disk to tape backups (d2D2T), tape backups will fail if a new disk based backup is not created before the next scheduled tape backup.  DPM always makes tape backups by mounting last successful disk based recovery point.
    This is so we don't need to transfer data over the network since that most recent data is already on the DPM server. Look to see why the disk recovery points are failing and correct that to prevent tape backups from failing.

    Is this the only time that recovery points are verified? Can I do a manual verification of recovery points? I'm concerned that some of the backups I have may be corrupt. If that's the case I need a way of finding out which ones are affected and a way to
    resolve the issue. Unfortunately I've not found much,the DPM error code isn't even listed in the official documentation. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh859159.aspx Other threads where people have seen this issue seem to be for older versions
