Disk Warrior 4.2 on Mini Intel Core 2 Duo with OS 10.6 won't boot...

Disk Warrior 4.2 works on my MBP Intel Core 2 Duo, but not on my
Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo. I did the DW update to 4.2 and inserted it into my MBP... worked fine. Did the same on my Mac Mini (both have 10.6 OS) and all it would do is give me the start up chime (holding C down of course) over and over and over. When I would finally let up on the C, it would boot into 10.6, showing the DW disk on the desktop.
Any ideas? I've repaired permissions on the Mini and tried again... same result. Thanks....

The DiskWarrior folks state that the 4.2 update disc that you make will only start the same computers that the original disc that you bought from them was able to start.
If your DW update disc does meet those requirements on your Mini, then you may have to try remaking a new update disc, perhaps using a different brand of DVD/CD media.

Mac Mini Intel Core Duo's did not ship until 2006 which seems plenty of time for Apple to announce 'we have a problem' and what their recommended solution.
Why would they do that ? I mean, they don't have a problem. The inventors of DualDisc made a type of disc that won't play in all players, and Apple can't really do anything about it. Superdrives are not made by Apple, it's just Apple's name for a DVD burner; the Superdrives that are found in various Macs come from several different manufacturers, and although Apple probably ensures that the Superdrive and the Mac work well together, they won't test whether it works with each type of disc (usually, the manufacturer will).
However, that is probably limited to redbook/standards-compliant discs; since a DualDisc's CD side doesn't comply with any standard other than "DualDisc", and because it is not considered important enough to be officially supported by most (if not all) manufacturers, they probably won't test them since they're bound to get mixed results anyway.
Similarly I don't remember seeing a "strictly redbook only" disclaimer on any of the media available from Apple describing the capabilities of its Superdrive when I was making my mac mini buying decision.
You didn't see one because it is not required. Asking that Apple (or any other company) warns you that their players won't play non-redbook CDs is a bit like asking that they tell you everything your optical drive won't play. Apple claims that their Superdrives will read CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R DL, which aren't only a bunch of weird-looking letters, but also correspond to a standard. When you see a CD logo on a drive, it means that it will play redbook-compliant CDs. Your Dell player simply does more that what it is supposedly capable of, but because one (or many) optical drives will play DualDisc doesn't mean that they all have to.

Mac mini Intel Core Duo fan very loud and runs at high speed all the time.

I purchased an "Open box" Mac mini Intel Core Duo, 1.66Ghz, 2G ram, 80G HD and SD a few days ago from Fry's.
It runs beautifully except the fan is very loud compared to any Mac my family has ever had. It is so loud that we were thinking of putting it under the desk.
The fan runs constantly, and I mean all the time, at a high speed. You can really feel the air coming out the exhaust vents. The case is always cool to the touch as is the exhaust air.
My aunt bought a similar Mac mini (But only 512Mb ram) the same day. Her's is very quiet. The case feels just slightly warm, not unlike other Mac mini's I've seen.
Should my Mac mini's fan be running this way?

BTW: The "open box" was sealed with a Fry's label and it said that this had a new warranty. Yet, checking the serial number, it said that it had about 260 days left. I guess Fry's is backing it?
Also, someone told me that perhaps the main wire from the fan to the logic board is disconnected.

Since you have 2 gigs of memory, my thoughts are that when the party (Fry's or the origianl purchaser) upgraded the memory, they neglected to reattach the wire at the front of the Mini under the IR receptor at the right front corner that regulates the fan speed. This wire must be unattached in order to upgrade the memory, and is probably why the original person brought it back, because of the fan noise resulting from failing to reattach the wire. If that wire is left unattached, the fan runs continually at high speed to protect the CPU and system in general. If you do not want to use a putty knife to open the Mini, take it back to Fry's and ask someone who is Mac savvy to open it and reattach the small plastic receptacle at the end of the wire into its socket at the right front of the machine. When I go to Fry's, I am always concerned because the employees allow people to pry keys off of the Apple notebooks, so don't expect that their employees to know or care about anything Mac.

I am thinking of "transferring" my "old" HK Soundsticks USB for my sis's new Mac mini Intel Core Duo.
Is there any issue or problem with the mac detecting the USB speakers?? I thought I read somewhere here a while back that generally the Intel Macs might have a problem detecting the USB speakers.

Hi NewMoses, thanks for replying but you have to be specific, if you just bought your Soundsticks, it is most likely the HK Soundsticks II, is yours?? which has a normal audio jack, unlike the 1st Soundsticks, which has a USB input.
I am sure the Soundsticks II with the audio jack would have not much problem on the new Intel Macs, since they are what I considered a "physical audio input", unlike the USB, which involves the USB technology, where more complication may come into play.

FCP Studio requires an AGP Quartz Extreme or PCI Express graphics card .. does that mean that it is not compatible on a Mac Mini Intel Core Duo? The Mini's Intel GMA950 graphics processor is not PCI Express, is it? I'd appreciate some feedback, thanks

Your tems are fine, nothing at all to worry about. One thing you can do is shut down the computer, remove the RAM plate cover on the bottom and vacuum out the air intake. As for the spinning beach balls that isn't a freeze it means a process is busy. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you begin getting SBBOD look in AM and see if you see any processes using a large %CPU and also click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM is available at that point in time. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes to have 500MB or more of FREE RAM, if you see it's at or below 500MB then a RAM upgrade is needed or you need to reduce the amount of open windows. Dithered Colors in iPhoto 6 on iMac 20" Intel Core Duo with 1.5GB RAM

I have a 20" iMac Intel Core Duo. Shoot at 100 ISO, sRGB, with a Canon Digital Rebel XT in a studio setting. When viewing the images in iPhoto they have a noticeable dithering on the colors, especially on the seamless. Sometimes it's bad.
If I view them full screen in Comparison mode I see it there, too. Detail is intact, but the colors dither. Doesn't happen in Photoshop CS2, and I don't remember if it happens in Preview...
Any ideas of what is going on?

Are you running the latest Quicktime version, 7.1.5? If not that may have something to do with it. Also what color profile are the files assigned? You can check that out by viewing them with Preview and using the Summary pane of the Info window there. Are you shoot RAW and importing those files? If so there may be addition issues that I can't help you with although as I understand it iPhoto creates a jpg file from the RAW file upon import and that's what you're working with.
Make sure your monitor is set to millions. Although since CS2 doesn't show that effect I'm guessing it is set to that. But check anyway.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

10.4.6 killed my new mini intel core duo mac

Everything worked perfectly on my mini intel mac before the 10.4.6 upgrade.
Now most of the applications (idvd, comic life aso) crash at startup. Itunes runs but, when I try to import a file, it crashes... WHAT'S HAPPENING??

The world is not black and white. I'm saying that on a rare occasion it is possible for even Apple to sell unhealthy systems by accident. No manufacturing plant is perfect. And even the slightest error can be cause for concern about the health of the system.

Says that the testing for it was good enough to make it work. The problem is some mitigating factor on your particular system which caused it to fail. Either the computer itself has something unhealthy on it, it has bad cache files, or bad preferences, directory, or drivers for something which 10.4.6 has no support of because the third party drivers were poorly written. Don't pin the blame on 10.4.6 unless you can explain why each of us who has had a successful install are not seeing failures. It is also possible you downloaded a corrupted update (this can happen a lot with large files over dialup internet, and is a limitation of that technology).
Yes while it would be nice for it to always work, if you installed any third party items, or have bad hardware, there is always something that may cause it to fail. Backup your data prior to installing any update, and be prepared as I say with the upgrade tips I've mentioned. If you need a translation for them, I'll be happy to find someone who can translate it.

Mac Mini Intel Core Duo refuses to boot.

Hi all,
Here's a run down of the issue I'm experiencing. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
I installed the most recent Security Update. The Mini booted fine, but all applications were taking several minutes to launch, and some would not launch at all.
Tried to connect to another computer using Screen Sharing, but the application never opened. Tried to Force Quit. Wouldn't respond. Tried to kill with Terminal, but not luck -- Terminal wouldn't open. Tried to restart, but Log Out kept failing due to Screen Sharing.
Soon after, everything became unresponsive. Cold reboot by holding the power button.
Start up stopped at white screen, gray Apple logo, endlessly turning gear. Waited patiently. Nothing.
Cold restart. Boot to Tiger disk and run Disk Utility. HDD required minor repair (bad header). Fixed with Disk Utility. Tried to Verify/Repair Permissions, Disk Utility informed me "No valid packages."
Restarted; no luck. Gray apple, spinning gear.
Booted to Single-User Mode to run fsck, but start up stalled after "Apple Intel CPUPowerManagement: initialization complete." Waited a few minutes. Nothing.
Cold reboot. Try booting to Verbose, same story, only start up froze after "CSRHIDTransition Driver ... Done."
Start losing my mind. Reset the PMU; computer starts to sound like a vacuum. Gray screen, spinning gear. Nothing.
Figure out I should reset the SMC. Do it. Nothing.
Might as well try resetting the PRAM. Nothing. Gray apple, spinning gear.
Try booting to Safe Mode. Nothing. Gray apple, spinning gear.
Boot the Mini as a target drive, find I am perfectly able to access the drive and all information from a MacBook. Run Leopard's Disk Utility and find the same issue as before -- bad header, maybe from all of the cold reboots? Disk Utility fixes the issue, verified as okay. However, Disk Utility will not allow me to Verify/Repair Permissions (the buttons were dimmed).
Try to boot the Mini as an external Firewire drive from the MacBook. Nothing. Gray screen, apple, gear.
Boot the MacBook as a target/FW drive, and it boots perfectly on the Mini. I guess it's not a hardware issue. Thank heaven.
I've exhausted all of my options.
What did the Security Update do to the Mini?
Are there any other options besides reformatting?
And if I do reformat, will re-installing the Security Update put me right back in this situation?

Welcome! From reading your post, you seem to be doing all the right things.

No. Chances are that you had a system-level issue before the update, and the update finished it off. Like the chip in my windshield from two years ago cracking overnight after some ice.
I would try installing the correct Combo Updater onto the internal drive when booted from another unit. If that doesn't do it, run an Archive and Install from your factory discs or a retail copy of Leopard. Be sure to be backed up first.

Mac Mini Intel Core Duo/Tiger - Troubleshooting wifi signal

After replacing my Mini's hard drive, the airport signal strength is averaging one fewer bars. It shows a single bar more often and the number of bars fluctuate more often. I triple checked when I put the antenna back, it was back exactly as it originally was. The shielding is near where the wire connects to the Airport. Perhaps I did something to the antenna I'm unaware of. I did notice that the Airport had two antenna connectors and I'm using only but I'm pretty sure that was the way it was before.
I'd like to get it back to where it was usually 3-4 bars. The router is 15 feet away.
Perhaps I could replace the wifi antenna?

My fault. I was testing wifi strength with the cover was off. Once I put the cover back on, consistently showed 4 bars.
Had no idea it helped boost the wifi signal. If that's so, clever.

What is max size/spec for upgrading hard drive in 2006 mac mini intel core duo 1.66?

I've been through the commuity and on-line retailer pages and I'm confused by the variety of answers here. I know the max thickness must be 2.5." But some say 5400 RPM; others say 7200. Some say 1TB but show only 750GB.
Is iTB safe in this box? Overheating issues?
I've seen a Seagate Momentus 1TB from one retailer but can't find any trace of it at others or on the Seagate site.
