Disk Warrior and Quicktime 7.04

I was having problems running Disk Warrior 3.03 (DW) from my cloned (using Super Duper) external firewire external hard drive (Lacie d2 HD 250GB). (NEW iMacG5 iSight)
The problem:
Boot from the clone and ran DW, at the completion of DW if I chose to "Replace" the directory DW crashes after replacement.
Alsoft tech support:
The issue is created with the installation of QuickTime 7.0.4. The actual DiskWarrior rebuild process is completed and the crash will do no harm to your data.
The current options are:
1) Downgrade QuickTime to 7.0.1

2) Start up from the DiskWarrior CD and rebuild the directory of the drive from the CD.
I tested with both QT versions and sure enough everything worked as support advised from the external FW HD.
P.S. I went back to QT 7.04

Disk Warrior and 'The Folder with the ? Mark'

Good morning. My MacBook recently crashed and I am left with the dreaded and endlessly blinking 'Question Mark Folder'. I have tried to restart using the System Disk and running Disk Utility but the Hard Drive is nowhere to be found.
I have read in the Discussions that running DiskWarrior may help. I have the program on my PowerBook G4 as well as on an external hard drive, but I do not have a DiskWarrior disc. Is there a way to run the program from these to repair the drive on my MacBook or retrieve my data? If not, is there a way to make a DiskWarrior disc from my .dmg file?

Disk Warrior comes on a bootable disc unless you downloaded it or lost yours. You cannot easily make a bootable CD or DVD, but your could put it on a bootable external hard drive that has a bootable copy of OS X (current version) and your copy of DW must be at least 4.0 for Tiger or 4.1 for Leopard.
However, it's most unlikely that DW will help you because the question mark means that important system files are lost or corrupted. The solution is to reinstall OS X. It's possible you can do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.

I have Mac Mini that has crashed. I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD. Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive. I cannot grab them. Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive? Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.

Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive.

Kernel Panic PERSISTS :/ after multiple Disk Warrior and Disk Repairs

Hey guys, I need your wisdom!
My OS took a dump on me the other night. Finder froze up and when I restarted, I got this at boot up, (see below, after my whole explaination as to what I've tried).
So, I bought an external drive, partitioned and installed Mavericks OS, along with Disk Warrior.
I ran through everything on DW and it seemed to find issues and repair the problems. Then I ran it through Disk Utility and it all checked out, "ok".
However, when I went to restart with my main OS, it gave the kernel panic error, again.
I'm frustrated, needless to say. I've repeatedly tried to rebuild the drive, repair disk permissions, etc, and every time it seems to "work" but it doesn't.
I am running a data recovery program and it's seeming to find all my files there. But, I really want to just try to resolve this problem to access the drive and do a backup from within.
Please, what are you thoughts on this?

Target Disk Mode requires a second Mac. It puts a "bad" Mac which may have hardware issues and cannot boot properly, in a mode where the internal drive can be mounted on a second Mac as an external Thunderbolt/Firewire drive.

How do I even do a TM backup on that original drive from my temp OS?
As suggested earlier, TM can be used.
Linc suggested using Disk Utility and doing it that way to make a backup and then transferring over everything to a newly installed OS that way.
In TDM, if a TM backup is not possible, for any number of reasons, Disk Utility can create an image of KP-MAC's drive which can be moved to any desired location and files can be extracted as necessary.
Another option is to create an external bootable OS on a USB/FW disk, boot from it, assuming that KP-MAC can be booted and does not have significant HW issues, and create a Disk Image to an external disk destination.
It's almost 15 years of my life on there.
Hence the need for a very good backup/restore strategy.

Disk Warrior and MacBook

I have spend the first day with my new MB, and so far so good - yes, a bit hot in the upper left corner of the keyboard while charging battery, but the temperatures are arround 58C for the CPUs and 34C for the SmartDisk (btw could someone explain to me what that exactely is?). Shouldn't there be another temperature sensor for the hard drive? And should I worry about temperatures at all, if the machine is working well and the heat is not really affecting my hands?
My other question is does Disk Warrior work on MB? I forgot how to boot from the external hard drive, could anyone remind me... which key?

Don't worry to much with the heat, if it is working just fine and not making your lap and hand uncomfortable.

To start up from external HD, go to system preference > start up disk > select the one you want to use for start up, or you can press option while restarting and it will display the option for you to boot from.

Real Time Help Needed: Disk Warrior and Setup Assistant

My system disk crashed a couple of days ago. I installed a clean system on a firewire attached disk and ran Disk Warrior against the failed drive. DW says the disk is too damaged to replace the directory structure. So, I'm in the process of copying over files that it was able to provide access to via the Preview disk. However, I'm wondering whether I can run setup assistant against the Disk Warrior Preview disk to get back the content of the keychain? I had a lot of passwords stored and don't have a backup.
Anybody offer any help?

Actually, I just remember another step that probably has something to do with this.
The directory entries for ~/Library/Mail and the individual mailboxes were corrupt, so Disk Warrior recovered the contents and put them in two arbitrarily named folders. I copied the contents of the Library/Mail folder into the new system's Library/Mail folder. However, I wasn't sure where to put the mailboxes. I looked on my other Mac system and it had a Mailboxes folder inside the Library/Mail folder, so I created new folder called Mailboxes and copied the recovered mailboxes into the new folder.
Another point that's probably related. The MessageRules.plist file exists in the Library/Mail folder, but the I don't see the rules when I open Mail.app. It looks like Mail.app isn't seeing the contents of Library/Mail.
Any thoughts?

Disk Warrior and Drive Genius Kernel Panic

Neither DW nor DG versions are on discs that can boot your model. You need an external drive with a bootable system installed and on which you have DW and DG installed. Then boot from the external in order to DW or DG on your MBP's internal drive. Alternatively, you can install a bare copy of OS X onto a 16 GB USB flash drive along with DW and DG.

Using Disk Warrior and TechToolPro on The iPod 5G

I thought i would try it.... my iPod 5G sometimes "burps" and acts up. So... I ran Disk Warrior on it. Now defraging and running other Tech Tool Pro maintenance on the iPod drive. Seems to be working. I'll post back with results.

Well, my first reaction was that you've got guts. However, after thinking about it, it does make sense for iPods with Mac formatting. You might want to touch base with Alsoft tech support for further insight.

Using "Bootable" - discs for HD Inspection- Disk Warrior and Drive Genius

I have a reasonably new I-Mac G-5 (i-sight) purchased in late Dec. 05. I was advised by the dealer that Disk Warrior would be a good investment - In February, I thought that I would use it to check on my HD-- This is Disk Warrior version 3.0.3 rev.39. It is bootable holding down C key after restart, but it just shows the Apple logo, spins and spins then shows a circle with a diagonal line through it. After a very long wait, I cannot get the disk to eject (just keeps spinning). Only way that I can get it out is to cut the power to the computer, restart and then eject the disk when it shows up on the desktop. I later purchased Drive Genius and it does the same thing. I have previously used Norton Utilities for years on my earlier Macs -- No problems. What's wrong?

Just one thing, you say you previously used Norton Utiliities.
FYI. Norton was the industry standard when Peter Norton Owned the Co. and was excellent for OS9. The combination of Peter Norton selling to Symantic and the advent of OSX Norton is no longer the standard at which all others are judged. It has become poison to OSX.
I suggest get rid of anything you have on your computer Norton and repair permissions and see if this improves your problems.
You may have to use the Uninstaller.

Assistance with Disk Warrior and Flashing Question Mark

Hello, guys!
I need a help. My computer was not booting and kept flashing question mark. I've tried First Aid, didn't help. Then I've checked with Apple store technicians, after all they reccommentd me to run Disk Warrior v.4. I did, but it couldn't create a directory for the files. What does it mean? What would be next step?

Hi, Olimpia. If your hard drive's directory is very, very badly damaged, DiskWarrior may not be able to reconstruct it. Did you see an error message in Diskwarrior that said something like that? If so, you have no choice but to use something like Data Rescue II to recover what files it can, and then erase and zero the hard drive and start over.
If you didn't see any error message, but Diskwarrior seemed to be taking a very long time and didn't appear to be doing anything, it was probably still working and just needed time and patience. I've seen several reports of Diskwarrior successfully rebuilding badly damaged directories but taking several days to do it, and one instance when it successfully completed a rebuild after *14 days* of continuous work. If it doesn't show any error message, just let it keep on working.

Disk Warrior and xServe RAID

Hello,
is it advisable to run Disk Warrior on a RAID volume? I seemingly have some corrupted files. I've done it in the past before, seemingly with no ill effects, but recently heard that it's not recommended.
Can anyone shed some light?

I'd heard that alsoft expressly stated on the disc warrior product that it wasn't for use on server products. Perhaps this was the case in v3, but v4 says you can use it on RAID volumes, and I ran it successfully last week. thanks for the post.

Disk Warrior and Lion

I've upgraded to Disk Warrior 4.4 from 4.3 and am using Lion 10.7.1. I have always Carbon Cloned my original working HD over to a second backup HD and after doing so start DW from the original drive and run it on the second backup HD. This has worked well in the past and allows me to optimize that backup without a problem. I auto-schedule the backup to clone over any changes to the original HD over to the backup HD once a week. After upgrading to DW 4.4 and trying to run it on the backup drive, DW balks and says the (second) backup HD is in use and cannot be unmounted.
So I boot into the backup drive, make sure no programs are running, reboot back to the original HD and run DW again on the backup drive - but again, DW balks and says the backup drive is in use and cannot be unmounted.
If I switch the process around, boot into the backup and run DW 4.4 on the original drive the original drive unmounts and is optimized. So what is preventing the backup drive from unmounting? Yes, I've tried unmounting it using the Disk Utility but even the DU says the drive is in use. Why would it be in use if I am not booted into it?
BTW, I cannot boot from the original DW CD because it is cracked and have to obtain my updates to DW as direct Downloads because I've never been able to make a working backup copy of the DW CD.

Disk Warrior and a Lacie little big drive

I have a 5 month old Lacie little big drive which I use for back ups etc. Yesterday I plugged it in and got the message ' The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer'
I have tried to see what the problem is through Disk Warrior. DW takes a couple of hours rebuilding the directory structure and mounts the drive.
The problem I have I cannot do anything with the data/drive as it is locked. I have followed the advice in the DW manual and cannot find how to unlock the drive through DU? HELP!

At the end of the DW process, does DW permit you to review the rebuilt directory structure before committing? If so, DW will mount the disk for you to review. At that point, you should have read access to the disk as if it was a regular local volume.
If you cannot figure out how to fix the problem, you can use that feature to copy off your data. If you have enough room on another disk, you can even make a disk image of the "for review" disk using Disk Utility. After making sure the disk image mounts, you can reformat the drive and restore from the disk image.
I did that once when directory damage was too severe for DW to fix completely. However, it let me use that review feature to get most of my data back.

Backing up, Disk Warrior and SuperDuper....

Hi everyone! I recently bought a second internal drive for backing up everything as my current one is being a little sluggish and sketchy. Anyway, have been reading older posts on SuperDuper for cloning my drive (the paid version) which seems like a good idea. Was also looking to buy Disk Warrior also to keep my drives all clean and tidy. But will DW work on my cloned drive? Sorry if that's a silly question, feel free to mock me Just curious, as presumably any bad directory errors, etc on my main drive, will simply copy right over to my backup using SuperDuper, wont they? I do have my stuff backed up already, so I'll actually be formatting both internal drives so I'll be starting fresh.

Yes, you can use DW on any hard drive. And, yes, cloning without repair will result in cloned problems.
So, first repair, then clone. After that, everyone's happy!
