Disk With Id3 Tags?
Hi all,
My car cd player is apparently able to read id3 tags from cd's so that it can display the track name and artist instead of just track 1 etc etc, but how do i write the tags to a disk? I have tried using both CD-R and CD-RW disks, but still the tracks are jus displayed as track 1 and "no text"
Any ideas?
That depends on what type of cd player you have. If it is a cd player that only plays normal audio cd's then cd text information should be turned on, and you should leave it set to audio cd like normal. Some cd players can play mp3 cd's. These disk store the audio compressed as mp3 files so more of them can fit on a cd, but you need a cd player that can play this kind of disc. If you do have a cd player that can play this kind of disc, then set it to mp3 audio cd.

Bad bug with ID3 tags of different case for same artist
My itunes files and music library are on a different drive than my boot drive. It is an internal drive (always on) in my Mac Pro at /Volumes/Media1/iTunes with music library at /Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music. iTunes is setup to automatically keep it organized and copy files to the media folder when adding. It has been this way for years, never a problem.
Just recently, and I think this may have coincided (but I'm not sure) with a 10.6.5 Snow Leopard update, my music started disappearing! The entries were still in the library, but with the missing exclamation mark in itunes with it reporting that it couldn't find the files. But only certain artists. After searching my computer, I found the missing files it at the same path, but on my boot drive, at /Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music/<missing artist>!
Trying to add these files back to my library would work briefly, but then they would magically disappear out of /Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music and go back to /Media1/iTunes/iTunes Music/
I figured out the one thing the different artists that had this behavior had in common - some of the ID3 tags for the same artist, which are the basis for organization, were in different cases. I think there is a weird case sensitivity bug that is breaking things. When I add back only those songs for an artist with ID3 tags for the artist of the same case, the behaviour stops.
I'm posting less looking for an answer and more to raise visibility and hope this gets a fix.
Example entries from my iTunes Library.xml, notice how the 'k' in OutKast is a different case in the entries.
<key>Artist</key><string>OutKast</string>
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/OutKast/Speakerboxxx,%20Th e%20Love%20Below%20(Disc%202)/13%20Pink%20&%20Blue.mp3</string>
<key>Artist</key><string>Outkast</string>
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/Media1/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Outkast/Aquemini/12%20Spot tieOttieDopaliscious.mp3</string>I'd like to note that I'm experiencing the exact same issue. I'd add to this but petegas4life has it spot on. I'm just replying in hopes this thread gets noticed so the engineers at apple can look into this and hopefully fix it in the next release.
Reproducing the problem is pretty simple too. Just take one song from an album and change the case of the artist name. You'll see the music move to the boot drive and all of the songs from that artist won't work in itunes anymore. And if you're relying on iTunes to edit the tags, fixing the files is a PAIN because they keep disappearing on you. -
Problems with ID3 Tags in iTunes - Desperate need of assistance!
Hello all...
Desperately need some help. I just spent a very (very) long time going through my entire music collection making sure all album art is present and all tags are corrected to my preferences. Now I want to back up the entire drive (F: drive, I keep my music on a separate drive) to a new hard drive (H: drive). However, in the process I've noticed that not all the changes that I made to the tags have actually saved to the tags themselves, even though they continue to display correctly in iTunes. If I load them into another application or reload them into iTunes from the new drive, not all the tag changes I made in iTunes are showing up. It seems iTunes is perhaps storing this tag info in some kind of internal database? To be specific I am not talking about meta-data like ratings and number of times played. I'm talking about artist, genre, etc.
So my question is this: is there some way to force iTunes to save the data that is currently displayed in iTunes to the ID3 tags?
I've also been disappointed to find out that when adding album artwork, iTunes does not actually save the artwork to the ID3 tags as I assumed. Any way I can force iTunes to do that?
Lastly, if neither of the above are possible, is there an easy way to backup the iTunes database so that all my tags and artwork are present once I remove the current drive and re-load my collection into iTunes from the new drive? Will the change of path prevent me from being able to backup the database?Hi Ed, thanks for responding so quickly. Yes, they are mp3 files, and yes, I had assumed what you told me, that changes made in iTunes would be made to the mp3 files. I also thought it could have something to do with read only, so I made sure that the files were not read only. But yes, strangely enough, even though the tags show up properly in iTunes, they do not show up properly in other players, and don't show up properly in iTunes if I remove the album, copy the album to the second drive, and load it back into iTunes (only for a portion of the files, but with the size of my collection this would still be time consuming to fix). I don't understand it either, but from research I have done online, it may have something to do with an iTunes glitch relating to the ID3 tag version.
Regardless of how it is supposed to work or what the explanation is, the situation now stands that my tags display perfectly in iTunes but are not all saved to the files perfectly. So I am hoping there is some way I can force iTunes to save the current state of tag info to the files!
About the 2 drives, it's simple. Right now my collection is on F:, and loaded into iTunes, but I want to get rid of that drive as it is IDE and too small, and store my collection on H: instead. I'm just really worried that after moving my collection and reloading into iTunes I will need to re-tag and re-load album artwork all over again. Any tips? -
Problem with ID3 tags in iTunes
I was hoping that I could get some clarification on how iTunes uses ID3 tags with mp3s. The problem I am having is that I have fixed all the ID3 tags on my mp3s using another program (Tag & Rename is the name of the program, it does both v1 and v2 ID3 tags) but iTunes still doesn't recognize the changes I have made. I have tried deleting my entire library, and readding all the songs, but for some reason it still has the wrong information. I tried opening the files with other music players, and they read the ID3 tags fine.
Thanks in advance!
I don't know if this helps, but the most noticable program is with my compilations. I changed all the artists to the actual artist name instead of "Various" that it used to say, but iTunes still reports the artist as "Various".I routinely change file names, change ID3 tags, and edit existing tracks using external programs. Once done, all I do is to double click the track in iTunes to ensure it reads updated ID3 tag info correctly from the track.
1. iTunes reads track info from the file everytime you play a track and saves any changes that you have made through external software to its internal database at "C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml". As an alternative to playing, you could also press Ctrl-I to display track info, at which time it reads updated info from the track and displays it.
2. If the filename has been changed for a track, iTunes prompts you to point to the right filename. When done, it populates ID3 tag info, while retaining the playcount and rating.
Hope this helps. -
Songs cut off. someting to do with id3 tags and how they are encoded?
Something very disconcerting is happening; tracks are being cut off before they should. Slowly more and more songs are being 'eaten'.
One correlation does seem to be that they are all encoded with iTunes v4.0.1 and have id3 tag: v2.2. Unfortunately I have no idea what, if anything, this means or what to do about it.
The 'time' display of the song is changed to the point where it cuts off rather than it's true length. I have tried changing the stop time (song info, options tab) but it does not allow me to make it longer.
Currently iTunes 9.0.2 (25) is being used. This problem spans over several updates.Thanks Mike,
Usually I do get info on a whole album, but I found that doing this for individual songs allows you to view the sorting info, and it was this that was causing the problem - All the sorting info has to be exactly the same for each song within an album for it to sort properly on an ipod. It's weird that the sorting was fine within Itunes, but not on the ipod, but anyway this seemed to solve the problem. -
Music Player with ID3 Tag Feature
Any application that has ID3 tag feature? I can't stay in front of my PC all the time to change and organize all my music files properly. I prefer organize them via my 5800, so, I can do it anytime. Yes, 5800 has its own 'song details' feature. But it's only temporary. If I formatted my memory card, all the details are gone, and I have to organize them again!
Solved!
Go to Solution.I think you're missing the point here. Of course when you format the memory card, all data is deleted. Hence it would make sense to perform a backup of your memory card contents onto your computer before formatting the memory card. Easiest way to do this is to copy everything from the memory card (i.e. displayed as Removable Disk in Windows) to your hard drive on your computer. Then when the format is complete, copy the songs back to your memory card. That way, all the ID3 tags for songs that you modified on your phone will be restored to the memory card.

hi - I use a product called Squeezecenter as a music server to drive a couple music devices, and in order for it to read tags and artwork properly it needs to used v 2.3. iTunes has always given me the option to select all tracks and convert to v2.3, no problem. Recently I re-ripped my entire CD collection (to AIFF) and also buy high resolution tracks online and transcode from WAV to AIFF. AIFF has tagging capability, but now that my entire library is AIFF and some Apple Lossless, iTunes is no longer giving me the option to convert tags to v2.3 (which I used to do after I added new tracks to ensure compatibility). So, anyone know what version iTunes uses by default with the AIFF format now that I don't have the convert option? (I have a 2nd library with my lossy collection and it still has the option to convert tags, so I'm guessing it's the presence of MP3 or AAC that allows for this?).
So anyone know how to access the tag conversion feature when just AIFF/Apple Lossless files or which version of tags it might be using? Thank you!Hello Odetojoy,
Thank you for your post.
It will be helpful in your next post, to include your method
of PDF creation, and also your page-setup settings prior to

My hardware and software work great, I've been using iTunes for 3 years and have a large collection. It helps that I'm 60 years old and have been supporting musicians and the industry since the early sixty's.
My Problem is that I want to be able to create smart playlists with music from each of the decades. You might think you could use the MP3 tag YEAR but the problem is this field is already used to signify the release date of the album.
I know someone has already solved this problem. If you don't mind, I want to steal your solution.The grouping field, I believe, was intended for smart shuffle.
Take a look at itunes > edit > preferences > playback
At the bottom, you'll see that smart shuffle can shuffle by songs, albums, or groupings. So if you put Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" into a group, and then into a plyalist that has that album and turn on shuffle, you could be more likely to hear the entire album's tracks in order.
itunes > help says this about smart shuffle:
+If you select Albums or Groupings, iTunes plays the songs in the order in which they appear on the album or in the grouping, and then chooses another album or grouping at random.+
I don't use shuffle much, so I use grouping for other stuff, like label or where I got the tracks from. -
Problem with ID3 tag "comment"
iTunes seems to allow me to enter a comment tag of any length, but will only store a small portion of my comment (255 characters to be precise).
Anyone know why comments can only be 255 characters and if there is anything to be done about it. Perhaps it is some kind of design feature that cannot be altered.
DBIt's a design limitation. As far as I'm aware the id3v2 tag specification doesn't impoose a limit, but as you've seen iTunes only allows entry of, or displays, a maximum 255 characters regardless of what value might have been stored in the tag via other software.
I'm sure it could easily be fixed in the software if Apple choose to do so. Suggestions go to iTunes Feedback.

ITunes ID3 tags handling for artwork
I have created MP3 versions of my band's artwork for inclusion in an online radio. I am running into some issues with ID3 tags. The MP3s show the artwork and everything just fine on my Mac. However the artwork doesn't show up in the radio software (Centova) when the files are uploaded. Because of this, I've got a crash course in ID3 tags--at least the album artwork tags.
It turns out, in ID3 tags version 2, there are no less than 15 different ID3 tags reserved for artwork--meaning you can attach up to 15 separate pieces of artwork (in theory) to each MP3 file. Here are the tag reservations:
$00 Other
$01 32x32 pixels 'file icon' (PNG only)
$02 Other file icon
$03 Cover (front)
$04 Cover (back)
$05 Leaflet page
$06 Media (e.g. label side of CD)
$07 Lead artist/lead performer/soloist
$08 Artist/performer
$09 Conductor
$0A Band/Orchestra
$0B Composer
$0C Lyricist/text writer
$0D Recording Location
$0E During recording
$0F During performance
$10 Movie/video screen capture
$11 A bright coloured fish
$12 Illustration
$13 Band/artist logotype
$14 Publisher/Studio logotype
Yes, you read that right, there's a tag for "A bright colored fish". So here's the rub: I'm finding that iTunes defaults album artowrk to the first position (00), which has a certain logic to it. But, I'm finding that this radio software, and some other pro level software looks for cover art in the third tag (Cover Art) be default. This makes a number of problems. It means that I'm having to find a serious ID3 tag editor to change the iTunes artowork tag from "00-Other" to "03-Cover Art" in order for it to be properly displayed.
NOW THE QUESTION: Does iTunes have any sort of method to select which "type" of cover atwork tag you want to apply to the added artwork? Or am I at the mercy of iTunes' default designation and that's that?Apple have this help, which I guess you will have seen:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1468
There is a very comprehensive discussion of the issue in this post:

I've got a problem with ID3 tags. As far as i've been using iPod there was no such problem, but now my iPod is broken and i'm using nokia e50 smartpohone instead. The phone doesn't support ID3v2.4 so I had to downgrade all my tags to v2.3
But in some cases (later i've found those "cases" were encoded with iTunes) no conversion is possible.
my question is: how to enable the "Convert ID3 Tags" for iTunes encoded files? or if it's impossible what should I do to convert tags without using iTunes
Windows XP ProIf you're up to it, the following should work.
Download and install foobar2000 if you don't already use it. Add the unprotected AAC files to the main playlist window. Select them all, right-click, and choose Tagging > Rewrite File Tags.
Note: At this point, you may need to remove the same files from your iTunes library and add them back again if you will be transferring the files directly from iTunes to your phone. Otherwise, moving the files from their default location to your phone should work just fine. -
Id3 tags made easy...why not?
Hi,
I use a couple of different programs when working with ID3 tags. With one it uses the CDDB to autotag the songs. The other I use for cleaning up tags when needed, or use it to rename files for songs based on the tags.
What I'm wondering is why iTunes couldn't incorporate something similar to look up track info? I know you can do it when importing a CD using iTunes, but why not for mp3s that you get elsewhere? Is it just because iTunes only wants you to get music you buy from them, thus they make it hard?
Just wondering and wanted others' opinions.
Thanks,
ipod the sheriff (but I didn't shoot the mp3s)This is not a problem with iTunes. If you're dealing with AIFF or WAV files, then little if any metadata will/can be preserved. Apple Lossless, AAC and MP3 all retain metadata when transferring to another computer, providing the other computer is running iTunes or otherwise using software capable of reading the necessary metadata.
I should perhaps point out that passing along your music files to friends is usually in violation of applicable laws and regulations, unless you own full rights to the music. -
We can't get Flash 8 to read the id3 tags that are embedded
in an mp3 that was created from iTunes.
We bring an aif file into iTunes. Preferences are set to
create an mp3 when importing. So, we create an mp3.
Get info shows the data, we add more data (like into the
comments field).
We should have an mp3 with id3 tags but Flash does not
recognize the data.
Is ther anything we can do?And here's the code needed to get title, album and artist from an mp3 file.
File file = new File(filename);
AudioFileFormat baseFileFormat = AudioSystem.getAudioFileFormat(file);
if (baseFileFormat instanceof TAudioFileFormat)
{ Map properties = ((TAudioFileFormat)baseFileFormat).properties();
String title = (String)properties.get("title");
String album = (String)properties.get("album");
String author = (String)properties.get("author");

How do I add album artwork to iTunes, but NOT to the ID3 tag, manually?
I imported a lot of mp3s into iTunes. After some messing about with ID3 tags, I got iTunes to download most of the Artwork for my albums.
I've found a lot of the other covers using Slothradio, and I started to copy the images into iTunes. However, I noticed that it was actually adding the images into the ID3tags.
When I checked the music for which iTunes downloaded the covers, it DIDN'T put the artwork into the tags.
So, how do I add the covers to iTunes like it does itself, without putting them in the ID3 tags?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers,

Missing ID3 Tags on MP3 CD burned with iTunes
I have a Sony CD Player in my car. This Player supports mp3 CD's. To Burn such CD's with iTunes is not the Problem.
iTunes seems not to set the ID3-Tag in it's Libary. Is it possible to set the iTunes-Libary-Informations (as they are displayed on my Screen) as ID3 Tags to the Files ? Are there Risks within ?Ooops. You just created a lot of work by erasing the tag info.
I think there are some scripts out there that can fill in ID3 tags based on file names.
This page is from an apple discussions regular poster:
http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp
You could try the "TagFromFilename" script.
For future, itunes does not have the ability to update tag info like Windows Media Player does. I suppose you could see what WMP will do, before trying that script.
Since I haven't used either one to do this, I can't say how well either works.
