Disk2VHD

Dear all,
I have used Disk2VHD to perform a P2V conversion of a W3K SP2 server. However when I boot the VHD in W8K R2 SP1 Hyper-V console there is no mouse input. I have installed the integration services via the actions menu and also ensured that all the integration
services are offered.
Can anyone offer any assistance on how to get the mouse input to work?

The problem is that the old mousedriver is hooked to the mouse device class.
To remove this dependency, go into the registry and navigate to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue.
Reboot....
If you wish you can take out the drivers completely by deleting these registry hives completely :
The driver:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msvmmouf
The Service:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VPCMap
The CopyHook Shell Extension: ( for folder access )
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{30C14BA C-122C-42ED-B319-1139DBF48EB8}\InProcServer32
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\CopyHookHandle rs\VPCCopyHook
After a reboot you can delete the "Virtual Machine Additions" folder from program files...

Hyper-V installation of mouse pointer for Windows 2003
you need to install Integration Services from the following path of your running VM’s window, click
Action > Insert Integration Services Setup Disk.
After the message in bottom or a popup, reboot your system. Then  you will be able to use mouse inside the VM properly. Well for this, you need at least a SP2 on your operating system, mean on Windows Server  2003

  • Disk2vhd efi vhdx vm fails to boot (solved)

Edit:  I was able to work around this.  From what I've read, a bare metal restore from a physical to virtual machine is not supported, but that's what I tried and it worked beautifully.  The only thing that went right today.
So, disk2vhd isn't needed (and as we've seen, didn't work).  Instead I took these steps:
    1. Control Panel -> File History.  After it finishes searching for drives, at the bottom left of the page is a link to System Image Backup.  Run it, and select a target drive for the backup.  I used a 64Gb key drive.  Next, it will
show you the volumes that will be backed up.  It automatically selects (and you cannot deselect) the volumes required for a bare metal restore.  Any additional volumes are optional.  You'll probably want to deselect the target drive for the
    backup.
    2. After the backup is complete, either move the drive over to the Hyper-V host or access it over the network.
    3. In Hyper-V Manager, create a VHDX virtual disk from the backup drive.  Then create a blank VHDX that is at least the size of the original machine's system disk (which may have multiple volumes).  In my case, this was a 2Tb disk, to which I added
an extra 128Gb just to be sure.  This isn't the size of the image backup, it's the size of the disk from which the image backup was taken.  I made my disks fixed size.  I don't know if it would work otherwise.
    4. Create a Gen 2 virtual machine (this was necessary for me since my original machine used EFI boot).  On the SCSI host adapter, attach the blank disk that will take the image restore, and attach a second disk containing the image backup (this can
    be deleted later).
    5. Create a second SCSI host adapter and attach a DVD drive to it (also may be deleted later).  Not sure if you really need the second adapter but I was just being cautious.  Assign the ISO image for your original machine's install disc (Windows
8.1 Pro Update 1, in my case) to the DVD.  Set the DVD to boot.
    6. Run the VM and press a key when prompted to run from the DVD.  Select the Repair option, and drill down until you get to a page with the option for a System Image Restore.  Click on that and then select the drive containing your backup when
prompted.  It will inform you that drive C: (your blank drive) will be wiped out and resized to match the original system drive that was backed up.  Then let it run.  In my case it took maybe three or four minutes, but it was a very sparsely
    populated 2Tb drive.
    7. After the restore completes, you should be good to go.  After testing the new VM, I deleted the second SCSI disk with the backup image, as well as the DVD and its host adapter.
    =================================================
I ran disk2vhd on a recently built Windows 8.1 x64 machine.  The conversion completed successfully, but I'm having no luck finding the right recipe to booting it in Hyper-V on a Server 2012 R2 machine.  I've tried both Gen 1 and Gen 2 (with and
without Secure Boot enabled).  In both cases it apparently fails to find a boot loader.  The virtual disk is VHDX.
I ran disk2vhd twice.  Once including the additional volumes Windows creates for EFI, and once without.  The result is the same either way.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi Michael,
    Thanks for your sharing .
I am afraid the physical host is using UEFI .(I test disk2vhd on MBR partition ,it works )

  • Blue screen error after converting physical to virtual server using disk2vhd

I have used the sysinternals disk2vhd to create the c: drive from a Dell server. I was able to create a virtual server and boot but had licensing issues. After a support call and doing a repair install to change licensing I am now getting a: "a process or
thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated" after the virtual machine boots and I log on. I tried to get the integration services installed but the server wouldn't stay running long enough.
Any suggestions for resolution would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion? I want to see if the information provided was helpful. Your feedback is very useful
for the further research. Please feel free to let me know if you have addition questions.

  • Disk2vhd image not working because of SCSI setup

    Hi there,
We're in the process of migrating our servers from Win Server 2003 R2 to 2012. Because of certain circumstances, we decided to first convert our 2 web servers, both running on 2003,  to vms running on Server 2012.
I was able to successfully create an image using disk2vhd. The problem is, our servers have SCSI disks and and from what I've found,  first generation VMs cannot boot from SCSI. I'd need 2nd generation vms for that, but Server 2012/Win8 is the minimum.
Is there a work around for this?

    Hi LiaoAndrew,
Please refer to "install integration services when the virtual machine is not running" to install IC ,then try to boot the VM.
    Here is the link:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2013/04/19/how-to-install-integration-services-when-the-virtual-machine-is-not-running.aspx
(cause of server2003 , you need choose the Windows5.x-HyperVIntegrationServices-x86.msi or Windows5.x-HyperVIntegrationServices-x64.msi)
    Hope this helps

  • Disk2vhd blue screen on start up

    Hello
I have a stand alone win08R2 which I would like to convert and then add to my Hyper-V server.
win08R2: dell precision with mirrored HDD.  HDD is partitioned into 2 partitions (d and D)
    win2012 R2: hyper-V is a dell R610 Raid 1 (2drives) raid 0 (4 drives)
disk2vhd is completes no errors, but on boot it blue screens and then reboots into recovery mode:
I have tried the following fixes and nothing seems to work:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/jonjor/archive/2011/10/04/vm-does-not-boot-following-p2v-or-disk2vhd.aspx
    http://forum.sysinternals.com/win2k8-r2-p2v-failure-to-boot-vm_topic30732.html
among a few others.. similar but no luck.
can anyone direct me to a better solution??

    Hi Mouhamad,
Not seen that error before. If it were me, I think I would be looking to take a backup of the system, then start by breaking the mirror drive, removing dell software and drivers, maybe AV and then try again. BUT ONLY when I was sure I had a good
    backup.
The other option is to perhaps backup the machine and restore it into a VM, I think the trail version of Veeam would allow you to do this.
I have used the free VMware converter before to convert to VMDK then use the MS converter to convert the VMWare image to Hyper-V, it can be found here
    http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/
I have also been told about EaseUs backup that can backup a physical machine to an image then convert that to a VHD but haven't tried that myself.
    http://www.todo-backup.com/products/features/convert-physical-to-virtual.htm
Also as mentioned by Tim, I would be deciding if it was easier to migrate the server to a nice fresh VM but I know there are times that this is not always possible depending on the installed applications.
Sorry I cant give you an exact answer, hope that's of some assistance.
    Kind Regards

  • Get BSoD every time I do a P2V conversion with disk2vhd

I'm trying to do a P2V on a few old servers but every time that I try to run them on Hyper-V I get a blue screen with the following error code regarding the "disk is not accessible"
    0x0000007B (0XFFFFF880009B1928, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0X0000000000000000, 0X0000000000000000
I have tested P2V on a Dell server running Windows 2012 and  it worked perfectly. But every time I try this on a Windows 2003 Server or SBS 2008/2011 I get the above error. I tried many different fixes provided in other articles but unfortunately they
    did not help.

is the machine going to different hardware it might be driver related try uninstalling any drivers that might be conflicting with different hardware e.g chipset drivers and motherboard drivers

  • Break cluster after all resources lost but servers still alive?

    Hi All,
I'm hoping someone can point me to some documentation to resolve this problem I have. Basically I'm trying to create a lab of my production environment to test migrating from Exchange 2007 to 2013. I used Disk2VHD to get a VM of one of my DCs, the two nodes
of my SCC Mailbox Servers, and my two CAS/HUB servers. I was able to get the DC and CAS/HUB servers working but haven't had much luck with the Mailbox servers. None of the cluster resources are available in the lab and the cluster service wont start.
It looks like in order to break the cluster I need the cluster itself to be working to delete the resources and uninstall the servers. I was hoping someone knows of a resource that shows how to break the cluster when you can't bring the cluster up
at all. Then I could establish a new cluster with a test database and test my migration procedure.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi,
I am not fully understanding your environment. Do you virtualize your production environment to the test environment. The cluster settings were applied to the lab environment but there is no
real cluster setup on the lab?
Is there any error event ID in the application log?
    Thanks,

How can I go about troubleshooting this, please?

Yes, it's solved.  Sorry for the long delay in reply (Mike) - I'm not getting email notification of replies from the forum, even though I've set them.
As a solution, use disk2vhd instead of the SC12VMM P2V wizard, which will seemingly always fail in this situation in my hands.

  • Physical to virtual ends with errors, other methods export but launch with windows repair 2008 r2

New to hyperV here, plan to implement it in a few months. So I am practicing with it now.
I am trying to convert a working 2008 r2 physical to virtual using Microsoft virtual machine converter.  in the settings I was point it to my hyperv- server and I was getting errors, this was due to permissions. No matter what I did I can't get it to
work, not sure whats wrong. SO I installed hyper V under my win8.1 pro machine shared the folders and the export started.
Upon the end of the export where it goes into "Fixing disk' I get an instant error no matter how may times I do this or how which server I try to export I get an error here.
It still created files and when I then copy those over to my test hyper V the win2008 R2 export goes into repair mode, I'm sure it's a driver issue but I would have expected that MS would have stripped the drivers our before export.
I then tried Acronis backup server and was able to export to MS virtual machine but this export also goes into windows repair more.
In the past I've used acronis and restored a physical server , this would also go into repair mode unless I use the "intelligent restore" which strips the drivers.
I don't want to tinker with the live server to get this to work since It's still in production, but I would like to get this to work , would any one have a tip, what can I do to provide more information on the root of the problem?
    nambi

    Hi Sir,
    >>I am trying to convert a working 2008 r2 physical to virtual using
    Microsoft virtual machine converter.
Generally, I would suggest you to use
Disk2Vhd to convert a physical computer to Virtual Machine (virtual hard disk) then create a VM and attach that VHD .
    Please refer to this
    article .

  • "No disk detected" when trying to restore Server Backup Image to a virtual hard disk

    hello,
    I have a server 2012 running hyper-v
I've created a new VHD and started the process of a windows restore.
The restore process picks up the backup drive and can see the backup that i want to restore.
The backup is of a Windows installation taken from a phsyical server. My intention is to restore to virtual.
When i get to this page:
I cannot get the option to not be greyed out. However, if i click exclude disks it shows me the virtual disk.
If i press to continue i get this:
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Simon,
"How is best to do this on a live environment?"
Not sure I understood " live environment" correctly , but  Disk2vhd can run on a system that’s online.

  • USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices",
I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.
Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted
USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.
Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the
    VM to a VHDX file.
    On the Host:
Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking
(USB to PC) is not enabled.
    Enabled RemoteFX.
In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:

  • VHD boot failure - how to change from PERC3 to IDE?

I had a PowerEdge 2400 with a PERC3 RAID controller and 6 hard drives in a RAID-5 array that I need to convert to a Hyper-V virutal machine.
It's running Windows Server 2003 and I'm trying to use Microsoft's DISK2VHD tool, which has worked mulitple times for me in the past, but only when the primary hard drive controller is IDE.  The actual conversion of the physical disk to a VHD worked just
fine, but it would not boot into Hyper-V (2008 R2 or 2012 version).  Sometimes it gives be the BSOD with 07B inaccessible boot device error.  Other times it just reboots over and over again.  I've tried configuring the VM to connect the VHD
to either the IDE or the SCSI controller, but it failed with both.
I'm pretty certain the problem lies with the fact that Windows on the VHD is configured for a PERC3 driver and there is no PERC3 controller in Hyper-V.
Unfortunately, I do not have the PE2400 any more, so any options involving installing a cheap IDE card or taking a new disk image can't happen.  All i have is the VHD, which i can attach and access the contents of the hard drive.  How can i fix
the Windows installation in the VHD so it will attempt to boot up as if connected to an IDE controller?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Additional, please notice the Hyper-V server supported guest system version, such as the Server 2008 platform support specified guest system version as the following KB:
About Virtual Machines and Guest Operating Systems
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/cc794868(WS.10).aspx
Disk2vhd runs Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, and higher, including x64 systems.
And the following action is often easy forgotten:
Note: do not attach to VHDs on the same system on which you created them if you plan on booting from them. If you do so, Windows will assign the VHD a new disk signature to
avoid a collision with the signature of the VHD’s source disk. Windows references disks in the boot configuration database (BCD) by disk signature, so when that happens Windows booted in a VM will fail to locate the boot disk.

  • Best way to migrate existing XP SP3 partition to a virtual machine to run via Windows 8.1 as physical partition and not a vhd?

Hi I have a current XP SP3 setup have been using in a dual boot with Windows 8.1(on separate partitions on different hard drives - I think these are SATA drives)  but now am thinking of migrating my XP partition preferably as a live virtual machine
to be run as a guest via Windows 8.1 as host so I don't have to do the rebooting.  Also prefer this to making a VHD of my XP so can use the existing partition allocated for it rather than taking up extra space as VHD on my windows 8 (and don't want yet
to replace my xp dual boot in case it does not work so well as vhd, as I have a lot of old educational programs my kids still use on it that I don't really want to put onto my W8.1).  Will also save time if I don't have to convert it to VHD first.  I
also do not want to reinstall a new XP Sp3 virtual machine from scratch for same reason - will take too long to resetup -just use existing as is.
I have used VMWare player and Virtual Box in past with an old 98SE system as a virtual VHD/VPC file but VMWare workstation is paid which may be the one I need to use a physical partition but I prefer to try freeware options first.
Will Hyper-V in Windows 8.1 (I have retail PRO version of both my XP and Windows 8.1) be able to do the same as VMWare workstation?  OR is there another option to run the physical XP?
The other thing with my XP setup is that the user profiles that people login with are located on a different partition E (80GB) to my XP which is on J (100GB) and most of the programs for it run from partition D (over 120GB) and the XP boot loader resides
on a partition C (2GB) (which is not the Windows8.1 partition which becomes C only when it boots, but this C drive for XP may also be having the Windows 8 boot loader and files for that -using EasyBCD to handle boot menu of W7 type boot loader).
So I need a system that can mount these other physical partitions also alongside with my XP partition when it boots up.
So what are my options for running this XP SP3 setup via Windows 8 as a guest operating system?
Also will doing this be likely to require reactivation of my existing windows XP (retail) which means I cannot then use it again if I go back to the XP dual boot at times or in case the VM setup does not work?
Also do I need to change my XP first so that it boots off its own drive rather than the C partition - and how do I set this up then using EasyBCD or windows boot repair?

HI I found I had to make physical disk offline to use in Hyper-V which I cannot do and do not want to do with all partitions - cannot choose just ones want.
So now am trying to make VM of my physical XP -and other partitions neeeded but D partition is over 127Gb so cannot use Disk2VHD.
Here is what am trying now - any other suggestions for alternate software to vmware convertor/disk2VHD maybe to do partitions over 127GB?  I have posted also at VMware forums but no answer as yet.
Advice on doing a physical XPSP3 conversion to a VM for Virtual box and hyper-v ultimately
Hi I need advice as to best way to convert an existing XP Sp3 install on a physical hard drive along with other related partitions to a Virtual box VM image with aim to convert that VM image to a Hyper-V VM for use with Windows 8.1 host.
I have several C (boot ini partition), D programs, E Data, etc partitions and a current dual boot with an extra XP install I use as a backup system.
My main XP is on J drive and other XP on I drive with C drive boot ini that switches btw 2 with J set as default.
I have a D partition that is over 127 Gb so cannot use Disk2VHD which would have been easier, and it seems there is not a way to make a direct Hyper-V VM from converter but only Vmware VM?
I do not have or want to purchase as yet VMware Workstation as have W8.1 Pro that can use Hyper-V to run my XP SP3.
I seem to also have an issue with COM+ corrupted on my machine XP J drive ( It tried to reinstall the COM+ but my es.dll file won't register and I did get a failed conversion with converter when tried earlier at 94% saying VSS snapshots have
reached their limit).  I think this is related to my COM+ issue which I am not sure now how to fix apart from repair install of my Xp (as I have tried repairing COM with various articles searched on google to no avail) which I may do first before
retry conversion.  However my ALT XP on I drive seems to be fine with being able to browse the COM+ applications ok.  SO maybe I  can use that instead but it is the J drive XP I want the most (not sure if will work at reboot if I do not
    hot clone it?)
I have read also the manual for converter 5.5.1 ver standalone and am not sure of a few things so if someone can guide me it would be very much appreciated.
First of all which version VM should I make image of  if I later want to convert it to a Hyper-V VM image (I only have free Virtual Box latest ver, VMware Player and Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 PRo) ie: VMware workstation 10 or Vmware Player 6 or lower
ver or other?  OR is there another software I should install for the conversion or later conversion to Hyper-V?  I prefer to use Hyper-V over Virtual Box and Vmware Player if possible, but should these others work just as well for my Xp Sp3 existing
system as a VM in Windows 8.1?  Please advise which you think is best of these?
Should I leave all configuration options off while converting and even XP licence, workgroup etc or is it most likely that I will have to reactivate my XP (retail ver) once I reboot in the VM although I am putting to run on Windows 8.1 host on exact same
hardware as my current XP in dual boot (replacing my physical copies which I don't intend to use after conversion)?  Can I enter licence etc later as well?
I currently have 8 GB ram total -should I leave Xp one at max it suggests of around 3Gb ram?
I have Quad core processor -but should I make Xp Vm one dual core for when it runs on W8.1 host to allow the host some processors so can run at same time or leaving my Xp at quad core will be ok?
Network - I want to use host one as I read it is safer for obsolete XP so do I set that at start or is it better to change this later too -allowing xp to have own internet access (maybe as may need to reactivate also - don't want to call Microsoft
    if can avoid it)?
If I just want to convert resulting VM to Hyper-V VM -which software to use after for this that is freeware (Virtual Box or VMware Player or Hyper-V -not sure which can do it) and do I not then install Vmware tools?
SYSPprep should I do anyway regardless of what target VM will be when configuring later, even if on same hardware machine? OR can I just boot Vm and see if boots ok first?
Anything else I should set specifically for this future use of the VM image in hyper-v?

  • I can't virtualize windows 7

    Hi
I have a laptop with Windows 7/server2012 (180 days trial) dual boot with a HDD of 500 GB with the following partitions
    C: windows 7 100 GB
    D: WS 2012 100 GB
    E: STORAGE 300 GB
I used the disk2vhd to convert the 3 partitions into 1 VHD, but when I create a new VM on hyper-v to try to run this vhd, I don't get anything, just a black screen with a flickering white line at the p left side of the VM screen.
Next try I made was editing the boot manager so the laptop boots only with windows 7, I used the disk2vhd again to create the vhd and the result was the same.
Is there something I'm missing? do I need to erase the D partition with WS 2012 so I can convert the disk to vhd and virtualize it succesfully?
I hope anyone of you can help me
    thanks!

  • Newer version of Bitlocker problem when mounting VHD in Windows 8.1

    Hi all,
I just moved to a new system configuration and did a clean install of Windows. I made a complete backup of my (Bitlocker Encrypted) HDD to a VHD using sysinternal Disk2VHD. I managed to mount this VHD on my original system. In my new system however, when
I mount the VHD, Bitlocker warns me that a new version of Bitlocker is required. But I'm at Windows 8.1 and there doesn't seem to be a newer version of Bitlocker...
I hope you can help me to restore my data.
    Kind regards,
