Diskimage
I want to make a diskimage copy of Final cut studio install disks before upgrading to the universal version of it, just in case..., but I dont want to burn dvd because of a huge Hard disk, so the disk image remaining on the HD seams to be a good solution for me
I have never worked with this kind of files and i am a little bit loss with the options : format (.dmg, .crd, read and read, encrypt and so.)
I need a good advice
Michel
Michel,
Here's an article about a different type of original disc, but the procedure is basically the same.

Since 10.5.2 update, many diskimages-helpe processes with no initiation.
I just did a recent round of updates including the 10.5.2 update and now my MBP is not running as well as it used to. I guess the most obvious "symptom" is in mail when I'm typing a reply the whole machine will periodically freeze up for 5 - 10 seconds and then the typing will catch up.
What I've found from running top (or process monitor) is I'm getting many instances of diskimages-helpe with nothing apparently starting them up. Since I restarted after the 10.5.2 update (first time in months) I had over 30 instances of diskimages-helpe all taking .1% cpu all the time and a reported 618.35MB of virtual memory. None of these were there before the restart. Yesterday I went through and force quit every one of these processes, each of which prompted me with a "Device Removal" error when no drives (.dmg, USB HDs, thumb drives, etc.) were ever mounted. From yesterday to today I have 8 of these processes. I just killed another and two more came back. This reminds me of some malware type activity I used to have to deal with when I was a Windows systems administrator. What are these processes and why do I have so many of them since the update? Nothing has changed, I'm not even running many programs while I test this out. I can see no correlation to any activity and the starting of these processes.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've seen others with similar issues, but there are no actual answers I could find.Actually you can have numerous instances of launchd. I was more interested in whether the diskimages-helpe process had launchd as its parent. If so, then you might look in /Library/ or /Home/Library/ for a LaunchDaemons folder, then look inside for any file with that name in it. Also, you can check in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ for the StartupItems folders to see what third-party startup items may be installed. Also open Accounts preferences and check Login Items for something that could be related. I would also open the Console app in the Utilities folder and review the console log to see if there are any relevant entries that may provide a clue.
Otherwise, chalk it up to a defective installation and reinstall OS X. Since the drive is OK by Disk Utility you should be able to do an Archive and Install and not have to erase the hard drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
How to retrieve info from a XP.diskimage file
I'm running XP on a SunPVI II card on a SunBlade 1500. One of the Windows system files is corrupt and I can't boot into Windows. I no longer trust this configuration so I'd like to either retrieve my files from the XP.diskimage od copy it to a PC and get the information that way.
So ar I'm having no luck finding ANY usable information regarding this problem but I'm really hoping someone here can help out.
Thanks in advance for any and all help

Another thing you can do is use dd to create an image of your driveSunPCI appears to keep it's own 1024 byte header at the start of the disk image, so this needs to be removed if the disk image is to be read on a PC.
e.g. the following copied a SunPCI III diskimage on a SunBlade 2000 to a USB SD card, which was readable when plugged into a PC:
# /etc/init.d/volmgt stop
# dd if=2K.diskimage of=/tmp/2K.diskimage bs=1024 skip=1
3405780+0 records in
3405780+0 records out
# cp /tmp/2K.diskimage /dev/rdsk/c3t0d0s2(Note that dd direct to the USB SD card was only writing 100Kbytes/second, whereas cp manages to write at 700 Kbytes/second) -

TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Hi everybody,
I have a strange problem with Mount-DiskImage command.
Environment: Windows server 2012 without any updates.
All scripts signed as it was in Hanselman's blogpost
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/SigningPowerShellScripts.aspx
First script(script1) executing on one machine (server1), then copy another script(script2) to the remote server(server2) and run script2 in a PS-Session. Both are signed. Certificates are located on both servers.
In a script I tried to
Import-Module Storage
$mountVolume = Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath $ImageSourcePath -PassThru
where ImageSourcePath is a networkpath to iso image.
But getting exception.

Any ideas?Hi,

Disk Utility - minimum diskimage size
Folks;
Using Leopard's Disk Utility, I want to make a disk image for a particular file and size the image to be the minimum required for my ~6.5M file.
I create a new image (20M), because a 10M tells me that there is only 1.7M free and won't let me copy my file onto it. Then I resize the diskimage and the minimum I am offered is 16.9M.
What am I missing here?
Does a disk image ACTUALLY need 10M for its own usage?
Thanks for any help!
SteveV.K. wrote:
it looks like DU will not allow you to create a partition smaller than one tenth of the disk size.
when i do it on a 200GB drive the smallest size it let's me make is 20Gb, and for a 500GB drive it's 50GB.
I guess that's a safeguard against creating too many partitions.

I thought so. Like most filesystems, all the information must be stored in the bootsector or whatever it's called with BSD, and the total number of files is related to the sizes and total numbers of partitions, so like FAT32 or even NTFS, HFS has it's practical and theoretical limits.
I believe HFS has two bootrecords or equivalents, one for backup and this adds to the storage space issue.
Going back to the old 1.44MB floppies, the unformatted size was over 1.7 MB and Norton and MS took advantage of that, but not all disk readers were happy with what they did. MS once shipped Windows on a set of 1.7 MB floppies. Of course this was BC (before CDs). -
Ilife 11 install from diskimage ****** up my mountain lion
I TRIED to install IWEB via a diskimage on my BRAND NEW macbook pro I just spend all night installing - so I got installed - and Iweb seems to work - however it cant read my old files from iweb AND if ****** up iphoto (removed it) and my email seems to have been destroyed as well. How do I go BACK? I made a time machine - so can I restore ALL from that?! and how!? Thank you!!!
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

What is the point of NoDriveLetter in Mount-Diskimage?
I tried to use NoDriveLetter to mount a disk image to an empty folder. A straightforward task in DiskManager, but turned out to be more complicated in PowerShell.
Mount-DiskImage will return a CimInstance object, but of the MSFT_DiskImage type. The only way I know to assign a path to a mount is Add-PartitionAccessPath. How can I tell Add-PartitionAccessPath which disk to mount? Mount-DiskImage will not give me an
Id, DiskNumber or DriveLetter (with NoDriveLetter at least). That leaves InputObject as the only choice. InputObject should be a CimInstance object, but of the MSFT_Partition type.
I have tried:
PS > $Image = Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath D:\Images\en_office_professional_plus_2010_with_sp1_x86_x64_dvd_730330.iso -NoDriveLetter -PassThru
PS > $Image | select-object -Property *
Attached : False
BlockSize : 0
DevicePath :
FileSize : 2647570432
ImagePath : D:\Images\en_office_professional_plus_2010_with_sp1_x86_x64_dvd_730330.iso
LogicalSectorSize : 2048
Number :
Size : 2647570432
StorageType : 1
PSComputerName :
CimClass : ROOT/Microsoft/Windows/Storage:MSFT_DiskImage
CimInstanceProperties : {Attached, BlockSize, DevicePath, FileSize...}
CimSystemProperties : Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.CimSystemProperties
I haven't found a way to feed that to Add-PartitionAccessPath. I even tried:
$Volume = Get-Volume -DiskImage $Image
$Partition = Get-Partition -Volume $Volume
$Source = Add-PartitionAccessPath -InputObject $Partition -AccessPath $MntDir -PassThru
but Get-Partition can't see the volume if it isn't mounted.
This brings me back to the question in the title. What is the intended use of NoDriveLetter?
Am I overlooking something obvious? (It wouldn't be the first time..)Thanks for your thoughts!
My point is, I don't want to assign a drive letter at all. I want to access the image via a temporary folder. I am writing a script that will mount a series of ISO-images and copy a few files off of each.
If I leave out the NoDriveLetter from the Mount-DiskImage, I will get an mounted disk with a letter and easy access, that is not a problem.
I was just wondering what is the whole point of the option. Why would someone want to mount a disk image without any way of accessing it? Certainly someone had an idea when s/he wrote the code for the option.
Sam, I played with the Get-WmiObject in your example, but it returns a System.Management.ManagementObject that Add-PartitionAccessPath can't digest. It wants a CimInstance of MSFT_Partition flavor, which is in line with the name of cmdlet. -
Timemachine diskimage file already in use
Out of the blue I get an error from Timemachine. Apparently the diskimage file is already in use.
I'm backing up to a Timecapsule (2T) and haven't had any trouble with Timemachine yet.
Any clues anyone, how I can troubleshoot this?
Thanks! Thanks Pondini, resetting my Timecapsule did it!
You're site on troubleshooting Time Machine is a valuable resource!
Thanks again. -
Not enough space on device error when creating new diskimage on HD, but 173 gb free
when trying to create a new protected diskimage on HD, i receive an error message "not enough free space on device" eventhough i have 173 GB of unused space
Most likely the error refers to your disc image not having sufficient space allocated to it or you are trying to create a disc image whose size exceeds 173 GBs or whose size request is greater than the largest contiguous amount of space on the drive. This can happen if the drive is highly fragmented.

Can I (re)install everything from a DiskImage backup?
I assume (hope!) this is why we do backups, but I wanted to confirm The Plan.
We have an old MB Pro, running Mt Lion. We have a DiskImage backup on an external HD. The MBP (2007 model) just died and we'll be replacing it with a current version MBP (one of the non-retina models, if that matters).
Will we be able to simply do a 'restore' from the disk image (wiping out what's installed on the new machine) so that we get all the applications (with their keys/licenses) and files as they were on the old machine?
(In the past, when I've migrated to a new machine it was also to a newer version of the OS, so the steps were a bit different. This time, given that the OS is basically unchanging, I'm hoping that the process is somewhat easier.)Pondini wrote:
Why is it in a disk image? (I use CarbonCopyCloner, not SuperDuper).
I call it that because I thought that was what SD termed it. When I open any of the backup files, they mount like a disk image so, to me, that's what it is. Sorry if my terminology confused things.
Pondini wrote:
Can you boot your Mac from the drive? If so, it's just a normal clone, not a disk image.
I believe so. (However, it's a ML system and all the other computers in the house, except the dead one, still run Snow Leopard.) In any case, the file is a sparse bundle.
Pondini wrote:
If so, your solution is easy -- use Setup Assistant when the new Mac first starts up. Select From Another Disk when asked if you want to Transfer your data. See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the gory details. It can transfer everything but OSX -- apps, user accounts and data, settings, etc. It's similar to Migration Assistant, but avoids some possible problems.
That sounds ideal. However, my Master Plan ran into a snag late yesterday. I tried to create a backup (using SD) to get the latest stuff into an image, but SD gave an error message when it encountered one of the files (the Parallels app, which happens to be the very app that we're most keen to migrate over intact. The error message (using AAA and BBB in place of the full paths) read:
Error copying /Volumes/AAA to /Volumes/BBB of type 8 due to error 7: Argument list too long
The file in question is one of the files internal to the Parallels app itself
(Parallels Desktop.app/Contents/MacOS/launcher)
so I don't know if I have options to work around this and have SD go to completion. SD aborted when it hit that error.
I have a couple of days to play around with this, to try to get a more recent backup. Otherwise, I'll have to ponder the alternatives.
Thanks for the good discussion and tips! -
Diskimages-helper keeps crashing - what is this?
Have been trying to use the new Backup 3.0 program, but whenever I perform a backup, diskimages-helper crashes and the backup stops with an error about not being able to create the archive (this is on any type of disk - idisk, firewire etc)
In the console you can see that the diskimages-helper crash must be responsible for the Backup 3.0 error as it happens every time I try and run a backup.
Anyone have any info on this resource and possible issues in 10.4.2. I ran AppleJack just now and it reported the boot drive was fine. I have repaired permissions etc...
Any ideas, many thanks

Diskimages-helper takes 99% CPU
Howdy,
If a dmg file fails to open (one I had gave rise to a `no file system' error when I tried to open it) diskimages-helper then takes >99% of CPU and only re-booting can kill it.
Good Luck,
Herb SchulzI'm also having problems with Quick Look Helper using 95-99.x% of my CPU according to Activity Monitor. I don't know if the cause is the same (I don't recall trying to open a .dmg file today), but I'm certainly having the same problem - I was getting hangs and launched Activity Monitor to find out where all the power was being used up. I'll try re-booting as you suggest.
Anyone else having this problem?

Diskimages-helper taking 100% CPU ...
I suddenly got a problem with the process "diskimages-helper" created by my account. It consumes 100% CPU time constantly.
I have read other threads about this, but they are +4 years old and I doubt the solution is the same since that was a different operating system.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this phenomena suddenly appears and what a solution might be ??Remember in the future... "When In Doubt, Restart!"
