Unable to open disk image - with diskmounter get error "couldn't find diskimages-helper!"
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion few weeks ago. I have an encrypted disk image that I keep passwords and such in. I went to open it today and diskmounter never mounts the image. I looked in the console and I have the following errors. Can someone help me?

TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Since 10.5.2 update, many diskimages-helpe processes with no initiation.
I just did a recent round of updates including the 10.5.2 update and now my MBP is not running as well as it used to. I guess the most obvious "symptom" is in mail when I'm typing a reply the whole machine will periodically freeze up for 5 - 10 seconds and then the typing will catch up.
What I've found from running top (or process monitor) is I'm getting many instances of diskimages-helpe with nothing apparently starting them up. Since I restarted after the 10.5.2 update (first time in months) I had over 30 instances of diskimages-helpe all taking .1% cpu all the time and a reported 618.35MB of virtual memory. None of these were there before the restart. Yesterday I went through and force quit every one of these processes, each of which prompted me with a "Device Removal" error when no drives (.dmg, USB HDs, thumb drives, etc.) were ever mounted. From yesterday to today I have 8 of these processes. I just killed another and two more came back. This reminds me of some malware type activity I used to have to deal with when I was a Windows systems administrator. What are these processes and why do I have so many of them since the update? Nothing has changed, I'm not even running many programs while I test this out. I can see no correlation to any activity and the starting of these processes.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've seen others with similar issues, but there are no actual answers I could find.Actually you can have numerous instances of launchd. I was more interested in whether the diskimages-helpe process had launchd as its parent. If so, then you might look in /Library/ or /Home/Library/ for a LaunchDaemons folder, then look inside for any file with that name in it. Also, you can check in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ for the StartupItems folders to see what third-party startup items may be installed. Also open Accounts preferences and check Login Items for something that could be related. I would also open the Console app in the Utilities folder and review the console log to see if there are any relevant entries that may provide a clue.
Otherwise, chalk it up to a defective installation and reinstall OS X. Since the drive is OK by Disk Utility you should be able to do an Archive and Install and not have to erase the hard drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Diskimages-helper keeps crashing - what is this?
Have been trying to use the new Backup 3.0 program, but whenever I perform a backup, diskimages-helper crashes and the backup stops with an error about not being able to create the archive (this is on any type of disk - idisk, firewire etc)
In the console you can see that the diskimages-helper crash must be responsible for the Backup 3.0 error as it happens every time I try and run a backup.
Anyone have any info on this resource and possible issues in 10.4.2. I ran AppleJack just now and it reported the boot drive was fine. I have repaired permissions etc...
Any ideas, many thanks

Diskimages-helper takes 99% CPU
Howdy,
If a dmg file fails to open (one I had gave rise to a `no file system' error when I tried to open it) diskimages-helper then takes >99% of CPU and only re-booting can kill it.
Good Luck,
Herb SchulzI'm also having problems with Quick Look Helper using 95-99.x% of my CPU according to Activity Monitor. I don't know if the cause is the same (I don't recall trying to open a .dmg file today), but I'm certainly having the same problem - I was getting hangs and launched Activity Monitor to find out where all the power was being used up. I'll try re-booting as you suggest.
Anyone else having this problem?

Diskimages-helper taking 100% CPU ...
I suddenly got a problem with the process "diskimages-helper" created by my account. It consumes 100% CPU time constantly.
I have read other threads about this, but they are +4 years old and I doubt the solution is the same since that was a different operating system.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this phenomena suddenly appears and what a solution might be ??Remember in the future... "When In Doubt, Restart!"

Help, Lion keeps hanging
hi everyone, lately over the last week or two OSX Lion has been strating to hang anf i get the spinning wheel condtsntly, i doubt i have a virus as i checked my system with kapsrski, i am now starting to get frustrated with it, i am fully upto date with everyting,
i am using a mac book pro 2011 bought only in april, can anyone helpI'm was running a MBP early 2011 with and i7 processor, with the original 4 gigs installed. I had all of the problems everyone else is describing with laggyness and long boots and shut downs. Did everything that has been amply documented in these dicussions searching on "slow Lion." I had incremental improvements in performance, but was less than satisfied.
My problems were solved when I installed 8 gigs of memory. The only lag I have experienced since is Mail on boot up. I seems to take an additional 30 seconds to become responsive. I typically run 6-8 desktops with 9-10 apps running and can switch between desktops and apps instantaneously. TIme to complete shutdown, 45-60 seconds. Boot up, 120 seconds to login screen and 60 seconds to all the apps up and responsive (except mail)
It is kind of wishful thinking to list minimum specs of Lion as 2 gigs of RAM. Even 4 gigs is taxing the limits of the system. With the above configuration and software deployment, I'm using about 6.5 gigs of RAM as reported by Activity Monitor.
Do yourself a favor if you like Lion and install the additional memory. -
Help - Lion "custom access" permissions mess
I should start with an apology... I know there are a lot of threads that dance around this very issue, but it's so much I can't make sense of it.
So I'm asking anew...
Here's the situation: After months of persuassion, I finally talked my wife into letting me upgrade her Macbook from Snow Leopard to Lion. After installing, I then ran software update and installed everything else recommended. Reboot and everythign seemed to go fine, but then when I tried to delete a few PowerPC apps, the computer kept asking for her password.
Wanting to find out why on earth I had to retype the password with every toss of a file, I looked online and found someone suggesting I had to log her out as an admin and then log back in. Why that would work, I don't know, but I tried it. Big mistake.
When I tried to log her back in to make her an admin again, I couldn't get the computer to accept her password. So I then logged out and tried to log back in with my admin account which is set up on the same computer. That worked to get me in, but still wouldn't allow me to upgrade her to an admin in the system prefs.
So I THEN found this "resetpassword" trick using the Lion Recovery partition and terminal. I did that and was able to restore her password and while there, I also "reset to default ACLs and Permissions" or whatever it says inside this utility, with the logic that repairing permissions has always been a decent failsafe fix.
Okay... after a reboot and we're back in... and I run into a new problem with not having permission to do much of everything.
So, I open the "Get Info" on the hard drive to look at the permissions at the bottom of the info window. It says I have "read only" access. I figure this must be an error so, perhaps foolishly (or should I say probably foolishly), I grant Read & Write access across the board, so it reads like this:
System - Read & Write
Wheel - Read & Write
everyone - Read & Write
And then, don't cringe, I apply to all enclosed items.
When this is done, I rebooted to the Lion Recovery partition and ran the Disk Utility "repair permissions" there, too.
Upon reboot... I remember Keychain First Aid and run that too. It has errors to fix but says it was able to repair them too.
Right now... it all appears to be working fine, though it says I have "custom access" in the Get Info window for my HD.
However, I can't shake the nagging feeling that I've just used a flamethrower to clean up the living room.
For instance, I look now on my own Macbook and see that "wheel" and "everyone" in the Get Info window and see it's Read Only. And yet, I have no permissions problems right now at all.
(Update: I tried setting hers back to match mine in the same way (via the Get Info window, apply, disk utility, reboot, etc.) and the permissions problems all came back. So I went and made it Read & Write for everyone again. However, this just can't be right.)
Can anybody tell me (in easy terms, please) what I can do to get it back to what it should be?
I've seen notes on a program on xnation.com that "fixes ACLs"... and a few posts with Terminal commands... but I'm hesitant to borrow somebody else's solution, just in case it's not so good of a fit or if I don't understand it.
What do you think?
P.S. I promise to rate good solutions offered to up your point totals.Something like this?
System - Read & Write
Wheel - Read Only
everyone - Read Only
Yes.
...software from xnation.com that is designed to reset those ACLs?
I've never heard of it. You already know how to reset user permissions.
if the system seems to be working fine, does that mean something is still broken/in danger of corrupting or something?
You set wide-open permissions on all files. That's insecure, and some things won't work at all, maybe not anything you use. -
Help Lion/Safari 5.1 doesn't work right
Hey everyone I am having a slew of problems with the new lion/safari I have updated all to the most current but web pages seem to not fit i.e. facebook or twitter and many news sites. Also if I try email an article I can not get to the captcha box to or the send button because of the pages not loading correctly. Is there any fix for this? It is really starting ot affect my work and make me wonder if I should revert back to the old systems
When I click the "Email" link on an article page on that site, I get redirected to a another site with a list of social networks. I don't get a captcha, and I don't actually see any way to email the link.

Help Lion upgrade with Windows partitian
I do not know what to do.
Message says 'This disk doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disc, choose the Partition tab, select the volume scheme and then click options.' I don't know what to do with these instructions. THANKSYou apparently did not partition your drive properly. You will have to do so and that will erase the data, so you need to first backup your hard drive, and this includes your Windows partition. Then do the following:
Open Boot Camp Assistant and remove your Windows partition.
Drive Preparation for Lion
1. Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. When the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
5. After Lion has been installed it will restart to the Setup Assistant. Upon completing the registration information you will have an opportunity to restore your files from another hard drive, another Mac, or a Time Machine backup. You can restore your files at this time or wait and use Migration Assistant at a later time.
6. You can now use Boot Camp Assistant to set up your Windows partition so you can restore your Windows backup. -
Please Help, LION install.
Lion stops install and gives me this message:
Mac OS X can't be installed on the disk Macintosh HD, because a recovery system can't be created.
How can I fix this? Thanks a lot in advance!Hi tomas, I did buy a larger HD for my MacBook Pro and installed it myself. Am receiving the same error message as dommer4.
What was your solution?
When I select the disk (Samsung HM 500LI) and the RAID tab, there are no RAID sets or partitions listed. My format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Robert -
Lion, Spinning Ball for a few seconds at a time
Macbook Pro, Lion, 8Gig. I have frequent encounters with the spinning ball. Everything stops, the ball comes on, stays for several seconds, then back to life. During the episodes Safari, for example, is completely unresponsive. During the episodes, I can click on another application and switch to it.
This mac has been through several generations of OS X, and several different physical machines, using Migration Assistant at each shift.
Any help gratefully received!

We have an article that outlines a few troubleshooting steps if your Mac is running a bit slowly.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3915
If you find your Mac is running slowly, check any open applications to make sure they’re compatible with your computer. Or you may need to increase your hard disk space or repair your hard disk.
An application you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
There might not be enough free disk space on your computer’s startup disk. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any applications you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
Hope this helps,

Time Capsule sparsebundle corruption help please
Hi
I went away for a week and when I came back I found that the Time Capsule was not backing up. Apparently, my family tells me there was a power outage during my absence and, therefore, this might be the cause of the problems.
I have a Time Capsule acting as our Time Machine drive which is accessed wirelessly from a MacBook.
Double clicking on the sparsebundle got me a message that 'Resource not available' and some searching of this forum makes me think the bundle is corrupted. I followed some advice to use the Terminal to force a mount of the bundle into Disk Utility and this is what appeared in the Terminal window:
<pre>

I am no Unix guru and I have no intention of using the Terminal except with explicit guidance as I really have no idea what I'm doing with it. As a result, I have no idea what the output means, but it doesn't look good. However I am generally technologically savvy.
As you may imagine, I would like to try to save the back ups contained in the bundle if at all possible before I hook up the laptop via ethernet to the TC and start everything again.
Right now, I have stopped further TM backups. I have already tried switching off TM, rebooting and then reselecting the TC but to no avail.
Any/all help will be so gratefully received.
Thanks in advance
GraemePlease don't post messages this way. They are difficult to read. For problems with Time Machine I would suggest
you start here: User Tips for Time Machine.
Note that if you cannot mount the sparsebundle in order to repair it using Disk Utility, then the sparsebundle is beyond
help. Erase the backup drive and start over. For a Time Capsule open Airport Utility, click on the Manual Update button.
Select Airport Utility Help from the Help menu and search for "erase." This will get you the help file on how to erase a
TC drive. -
Lion won't install on my Mac mini. Why?
I have a 2 yr old Mac mini with 2.53 GHz Core Duo CPU, 4 GB of RAM and it's running 10.6.8. I just downloaded Lion but the installer says it can't install on my HD. Why not? I cannot find any info about what to do.
Is there some software on my computer that the installer does not like?
Does Lion need a completely new partition to install on?
If so, why is this not mentioned anywhere ?
Thankyou for your help.Lion creates a recovery area with a minimal version of OS X and it may be unable to do so due to use over the years, and possibly other resizing operations (Boot Camp). It could just need more space, if you only have less than 8gb free. Lion shuffles and merges the two systems when it upgrades. You can burn the image downloaded from App Store by finding the dmg file inside the "Install Mac OS X Lion.app" bundle, dragging it into disk utility, then burning from there.
Otherwise, you can appropriate a MBR/BIOS formatted 4GB thumbdrive, 8GB of either EFI or MBR/BIOS thumbdrive, flash storage device, or external hard drive, and format it, using the restore operation through disk utility to copy the contents of the installer disk to the media. Exposed via the alt key before the Apple logo, should show the bootable media, where you can format over the former installation.
As always, backup your files when upgrading. I recommend if your installion is over a year old to wipe and upgrade if you can't make otherwise the media bootable, using your 10.6 recovery dvd.
If you cannot find an external medium to backup your files before the upgrade, if you need to format via disk utility (Through 10.6 media), you can consider Dropbox as an option (2GB free account).
It's not uncommon for the partition to simply refuse operations, including upgrades and resizing. -
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 is slow. What can I do?
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 is slow. What can I do?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You don't mention what model you have or how old it is.
The normal recommendation would be to add more RAM (2GB minimum, and 4GB or more helps Lion run faster), but since you have a MacBook Air, that's just not possible because MacBook Air RAM memory cannot be upgraded.
If you are very short of hard disk space, you could get a larger hard disk, but the only options are SSD's (Solid State Disks). A larger SSD might not increase performance substantially. A reliable vendor such as Other World Computing (http://eshop.macsales.com/search/MacBook+Air+disk) does have lots of SSD options though.
If your MacBook Air shipped with a version of OS X prior to 10.7 Lion, (Snow Leopard 10.6, or Leopard 10.5), you could potentially reinstall that version. Here are some related links:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3303773?start=0&tstart=0
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2389334,00.asp
Another option is to sell your current model and purchase one that offers better OS X Lion performance. (More RAM, faster clock speed, i5 or i7 processor).
