Diskimages-helper takes 99% CPU
Howdy,
If a dmg file fails to open (one I had gave rise to a `no file system' error when I tried to open it) diskimages-helper then takes >99% of CPU and only re-booting can kill it.
Good Luck,
Herb Schulz
I'm also having problems with Quick Look Helper using 95-99.x% of my CPU according to Activity Monitor. I don't know if the cause is the same (I don't recall trying to open a .dmg file today), but I'm certainly having the same problem - I was getting hangs and launched Activity Monitor to find out where all the power was being used up. I'll try re-booting as you suggest.
Anyone else having this problem?

Diskimages-helper taking 100% CPU ...
I suddenly got a problem with the process "diskimages-helper" created by my account. It consumes 100% CPU time constantly.
I have read other threads about this, but they are +4 years old and I doubt the solution is the same since that was a different operating system.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this phenomena suddenly appears and what a solution might be ??Remember in the future... "When In Doubt, Restart!"
-
Since 10.5.2 update, many diskimages-helpe processes with no initiation.
I just did a recent round of updates including the 10.5.2 update and now my MBP is not running as well as it used to. I guess the most obvious "symptom" is in mail when I'm typing a reply the whole machine will periodically freeze up for 5 - 10 seconds and then the typing will catch up.
What I've found from running top (or process monitor) is I'm getting many instances of diskimages-helpe with nothing apparently starting them up. Since I restarted after the 10.5.2 update (first time in months) I had over 30 instances of diskimages-helpe all taking .1% cpu all the time and a reported 618.35MB of virtual memory. None of these were there before the restart. Yesterday I went through and force quit every one of these processes, each of which prompted me with a "Device Removal" error when no drives (.dmg, USB HDs, thumb drives, etc.) were ever mounted. From yesterday to today I have 8 of these processes. I just killed another and two more came back. This reminds me of some malware type activity I used to have to deal with when I was a Windows systems administrator. What are these processes and why do I have so many of them since the update? Nothing has changed, I'm not even running many programs while I test this out. I can see no correlation to any activity and the starting of these processes.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've seen others with similar issues, but there are no actual answers I could find.Actually you can have numerous instances of launchd. I was more interested in whether the diskimages-helpe process had launchd as its parent. If so, then you might look in /Library/ or /Home/Library/ for a LaunchDaemons folder, then look inside for any file with that name in it. Also, you can check in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ for the StartupItems folders to see what third-party startup items may be installed. Also open Accounts preferences and check Login Items for something that could be related. I would also open the Console app in the Utilities folder and review the console log to see if there are any relevant entries that may provide a clue.
Otherwise, chalk it up to a defective installation and reinstall OS X. Since the drive is OK by Disk Utility you should be able to do an Archive and Install and not have to erase the hard drive:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Unable to open disk image - with diskmounter get error "couldn't find diskimages-helper!"
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion few weeks ago. I have an encrypted disk image that I keep passwords and such in. I went to open it today and diskmounter never mounts the image. I looked in the console and I have the following errors. Can someone help me?

TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Lightroom CC takes 98% cpu and 3,5gb memory when exporting
Lightroom CC takes 100% cpu and 3,5gb memory when exporting
My computer, which is not bad, becomes unuseable now when exporting
Never had this issue with previous version(s).
Also, I had pretty silly GUI lag, which seems to have gone away by turning OFF GPU-acceleration...
Why is this happening??
Everything is running on an SSD.
Please advise.

Java process take 100% cpu
Hello,
I have a webapp running on Tomcat 5.0.28/RHEL 3.0. After some time (approximatively 1 hour), a java process take 100% cpu load and never stop, but the application do nothing.
Some detail on my configuration :
Distribution : Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (updated)
Kernel 2.4.21-37.0.1.ELsmp
Glibc 2.3.2-95.37
JVM : JRockit 1.4.2.08 (the last one)
Tomcat : 5.0.28
Server : 2*Xeon 3GHz HT, 2Go RAM
JVM param : -Xmx:256m -Xms:256m
Thanks for your answers ...Try taking thread dump (send a SIGQUIT to JRockit using "kill"). If you
get a thread dump, the VM is alive, and it's probably your java program
that's broken. In that case, make a JRA recording to see what's happening:
http://e-docs.bea.com/jrockit/docs142/usingJRA/jra.html
The methods pane is probably what you're looking for.
If you don't get any thread dump when sending a SIGQUIT to JRockit,
come back here.

Zenity takes 100% CPU Time
When I run as root or normal User
zenity --notification --text="test"
The zenity process takes 100% Cpu time
System:
Arch 32bit gnome 2.22
Last edited by brickwedde.eu (2008-05-06 11:26:00)I GOT IT... I think.
zenity --notification actually calls libnotify! I was trying out a script and suddenly realized something, because by chance dbus decided to take a break. Take a look at these two code fragments.
$ zenity --info --text "hello"
$ _
$ zenity --notification --text "hello"
libnotify-Message: Unable to get session bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-jmMdFXbznS: Connection refused
<hang>
<100% CPU usage>
I've figured out why: it's basic socket programming gone wrong. The notification part of zenity calls libnotify, tries to connect to libnotify's socket, and fails, using 100% CPU waiting for the connection to... end a stream that never started.
A possible solution is to just use notify-send.

Labview Loop Takes 100% cpu
Hello,
I'm wondering the best way to send a serial command when a button is pressed. Right now I have a while loop that checks if the button is pressed each time. If is is, it sends the serial command and adds the response to a text box via a shift register. If not, the original text box info is passed to the shift register. However, this loop takes 100% cpu (ok, only one core at 100% so technically %50), and I think its because the text box is getting overwriten every cycle. However, I'm not sure how else to do it. Attached is a print screen, let me know if you would like the file.
Thanks,
Eric

Parallels takes high CPU and makes fan go 6000RPM when device connected
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.5 on an Early 2008 white base Macbook, with Boot Camp and Parallels (which runs my Boot Camp partition) so I can use Windows XP, which I need for some XP applications I need that don't work in Crossover.
I usually keep Parallels running, with XP paused (since I occasionally need it and don't want to wait for it to boot and drain my battery). If I plug in a USB device, such as my wireless mouse or external hard drive, Parallels asks me if I want to connect the device to the XP system, but since I'm usually using OS X, I keep Parallels hidden. So, I don't see the prompt. Parallels then takes 100% CPU and forces my fan to increase to 6000+RPM from the high temperatures it creates. Even though the system is paused, when I plug in a device, it takes 100% CPU simply for having the prompt dialog box open. Any way to fix this?
I have a base Macbook (Early 2008) upgraded to 4GB RAM (so I could actually use Parallels without both the systems being really slow).
On another note, is it more battery-consuming to keep XP paused, or to shut it down altogether and boot it up later?
Thanks.

Diskimages-helper keeps crashing - what is this?
Have been trying to use the new Backup 3.0 program, but whenever I perform a backup, diskimages-helper crashes and the backup stops with an error about not being able to create the archive (this is on any type of disk - idisk, firewire etc)
In the console you can see that the diskimages-helper crash must be responsible for the Backup 3.0 error as it happens every time I try and run a backup.
Anyone have any info on this resource and possible issues in 10.4.2. I ran AppleJack just now and it reported the boot drive was fine. I have repaired permissions etc...
Any ideas, many thanks

Launching Flash Builder 4 Help takes 20 secs (ACH or browser)
We have 5 flex developers on our team who are all running into the same issue with the dynamic help:
1) Hit F1 (display help section)
2) Select a class (ArrayList for example)
3) Click on the Related API (mx.collections.ArrayList) in the help section.
4) It then take 15-20 seconds for the page to display in Adobe Community Help which is already running.
5) If I switch the preferences to 'Open Help in Browser' it take the same amount of time for the webpage to open.
There's no CPU load during this waiting time. This is really hitting our productivity.
Any ideas?Hi: have you guys downloaded the local help for Flash Builder yet? That should actually boost performance, even for online search/browsing. Here's why: when you download the local Help content, the Help system also downloads an intermediary XML file that we use to resolve context-sensitivity and a few other functions. Having this file cached locally should improve launch times for both the AIR app and the browser.
To be sure, open up the Community Help AIR app and check Preferences:
Windows: CTRL+ K or check under the Edit menu
Mac: Cmd + comma or check under Adobe Help > Preferences
Then click on the Local Content tab -- you should see the various package titles available for download with a status message (pending download, current, etc.).
We are working on an update so that we can deliver the intermediary XML file by default when a user opens the app, instead of delivering it via the content download. That fix should be coming out soon. -

in addition you might want to trace the session to find out what it is waiting for. In 10g you can use the DBMS_MONITOR package to enable the tracing, and then use the "tkprof" utility as outlined in the article to get the trace file generated analyzed.
You can also use the V$SESSION view (BLOCKING_SESSION_STATUS, BLOCKING_SESSION, BLOCKING_INSTANCE) to find out if the session is blocked for any reason, although it shouldn't consume CPU in that case.

Aperture fails to import 10,000 pics - hangs, instead, and takes 200% CPU
Help!
I am an IT professional and a professional photographer. But I have now spent a MONTH!! trying in vain to import my photo library into Aperture on my iMac.
I try to import 10,000 images (the import mode that leaves originals where they are) from my 1 TB firewire drive (bought at Apple store). Result same every time: it imports for hours or days (taking 200% CPU - who writes this malware?) , then hangs up completely.
Apple is no help.. no phone number to be found anywhere. I'll even pay.. this is my work, and I cannot do it.
I have followed maybe 50 threads here and on Google about similar issues and I have done everything that everyone suggests. No difference.
My latest import again halted with the app locking up. Here is what I did:
I bought a 1 TB RAID0 drive at the Apple Store. I copied all my photo shoot directories ove rthere. I emptied Aperture (deleted all projects, restarted). I then started re-importing the images from the new drive (I chose the way that leaves the originals where they are).
So far it has been chugging along all night creating thumbnails. The CPU is 200% used (of which 190% is Aperture). Aperture is completely unresponsive. In fact - Aperture is so unresponsive I am sure it has hung up. Yes, it has - no activity but 200% CPU. Ok, I force quit and now I need to repeat the process again?
This does not seem like good software - certainly not well behaved. I mean, how difficult can it be to import 10,000 images - that is what this software is for. Right? So make the app “nice” 10, already, so I can do other things meanwhile. Or give me a progress bar, with an ETA.
I am willing to learn - not being difficult. I have Googled others’ issues. I have followed instructions. I have tried support (no help there). I ask here.
But should it really take month to import my images? I am very close to throwing this crapware out and getting Lightroom instead.
Ideas welcome. Or an Apple phone number, which Appleseems to be very adept at hiding at all costs. I'll pay for the **** service!!!!!
MichaelWelcome to the forum.
The phone number will be on the AppleCare document that came in your Aperture box, along with an AppleCare ID for your copy of Aperture.
Also, typing 'applecare telephone number' into Google will give you http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html as the very first result...
I've never imported more than a thousand images at once but have not seen the kind of problems you are describing. What happens if you try importing smaller chunks at a time?
Progress bar - open up the Activity window (Window>Show Activity) to view the progress of all background tasks such as importing & exporting, generation of thumbnails and Previews. You'll also see a 'working' indicator at the bottom of the Viewer or Browser panes, clicking on this will normally bring up the Activity window. Finally, the Project you are importing into will show a pie chart progress indicator instead of it's usual 'filing box' icon.

P.S. '+(taking 200% CPU - who writes this malware?)+' - if you're an IT pro then you're already aware that apps that are working flat-out and are multi-core aware are going to grab as much of the CPU(s) as possible. 200% and not doing anything is a problem - 200% in itself simply means the app is making full use of the resources available, and RAW decoding is an extremely CPU-intensive task. -
After a migration from a MacBook with Mac OS Lion to a new MacBook Pro, iCal Helper is grabbing almost all the cpu. IF , making the use of the computer nearly impossible. After I quit iCal Helper through Activity Monitor, the system works fine.
So far I haven't been able to locate what is wrong with iCal Helper.
Can anyone help solve this issue ?Problem:
Your Mac's clock was set to a date in the 1960s or 1970s after a power failure. After setting your clock to the correct date and time, the iCal alarm window popped up, empty, thrashing your hard drive and causing 100% processor load.
You may have forced quit iCal Helper, but it popped up again after a while. You may have tried to let the helper app do its thing, but after several hours it just crashed. You may have googled the problem and erased several plist and cache files or exported/re-imported/re-synched your calendars to no avail. You are now left with the option of an archive & install.
Explanation:
After setting the correct date again, iCal/iCal Helper have forgotten that you dismissed all of your past alarms, possibly reaching back to 2003 or earlier. They now try to bring them up all at once in the iCal alarm window. This may take a long time and use a lot of memory.
Solution:
If all alarms show up eventually, you're lucky. Dismiss them all at once by clicking the red close button. You're done.
If iCal Helper crashes after a long time without showing your alarms, you have no chance to dismiss them. iCal Helper's RAM usage climbed over a certain value (maybe 4 GB), which is not allowed, and the app crashed. You will now have to dismiss the alarms in smaller chunks: Close all applications except System Preferences. Set back your system date to 2003 (or the earliest year you started to use iCal). Switch to another tab in the preferences pane to save your date. The iCal alarm window will pop up after a while (be patient) and show only alarms before your system date and time (again, be patient). Dismiss the alarms with the red close button. Then set your system date forward one year. Etc. If you have lots of alarms, you may have to do this by quarters or whatever is appropriate to not bring iCal Helper > 4GB RAM usage. When you're done, don't forget to set your clock to the correct date and time.
Prevention:
The problem is user based. After a power failure, log in to OS X with a different admin user account. Set the date and time straight. The log in to your normal account. This way, iCal won't ever notice the date changed temporarily.
