Disks don't unmount before OS sleeps

I would like to tell people about my experience at the apple store recently, what they told me about Snow Leopard and how that relates to my problem that they could not solve. Others have had the exact same problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2378553&start=15&tstart=0
Whenever my computer goes to sleep it does not unmount my external hard drive. This was replicated at the apple store. What they told me is that when the computer skips normal battery draining sleep and goes to Mac's equivalent of hibernate, anything hooked up to the computer is not unmounted. In addition, there is no option to prevent the computer from sleeping/hibernating when the external drive is writing, or "talking" to the computer. My external has its own power supply, and it was replicated with mine and another external hard drive at the store. Quite frankly, it is a stupid combination that Mac's OS people should fix. This is especially true because others have had the same issues while their computer is in the battery draining sleep state, and when external drives of any kind are "ejected improperly," Mac OS LOVES to destroy/corrupt them. This is just not user friendly for those who are cheap and don't want to waste power/battery. Also, this is one very useful feature of windows that OS should replicate. Whether they do it in a freaky Mac way, I don't care, I just want the functionality.
I know that you guys don't advocate for the use of scripts to change normal (crappy) OS behavior, but if anyone knows any script that could be used to ensure the computer goes through the proper sequence before hibernating/sleeping (like unmounting disks for example) it would be appreciated.

+how can I make it automatically unmount the way the OS should to begin with.+
What exactly makes you believe that the OS should do this? As Ralph mentioned, I see a problem remounting it; and, I don't see this as an issue or problem - sorry. Any external device will mount when you plug it in; therefore, unless you "unmount" it, it will still be mounted. So, what's the problem having it mounted vs. unmounted while the Mac is sleeping - it would still be plugged in. And, if you were to find a hack to change the default OS behavior (which I personally would not do) so it would unmount, since it is still plugged in, you'd need a second hack to mount it again.

  • Unmounting before shutdown

If I don't unmount a hard drive partition, etc. before shutting down the computer will it mess things up?

Hopefully not, but you always run the risk of corruption. Any time a disk is writing and it gets shut down unexpectedly you're going to have some data loss. With that being said, I've never known my base Linux system being hurt by unclean shutdowns.

  • My Book for Mac unmounting before I can do access it

I literally just got this drive today.  I installed the utility software, but not the security software.  All that went well.  I got it registered.  Now the hard drive automatically unmounts before I can do anything with it.  The icon appears on the screen for a few seconds; then disappears.  I uninstalled the software, rebooted, and it keeps doing the same thing.  I've read that others have had similar problems, but haven't seen a viable solution.  It's incredibly frustrating and, quite frankly ridiculous, to have to waste time with this thing when it's a brand new product supposedly designed specifically for use with a Mac.  Any ideas?  If I can't get this thing working by tomorrow, I'm giving up and returning it.   I have a mid-2009 MBP running snow leopard.  Yes, it's old, but it still works just fine, except with this drive.

July 2015 Solution for Multiple Problems with a New ‘My Passport for Mac’ (Note: I am posting this same message in response to several topics in this Forum, since the symptoms sounded similar to mine and I suspect WD software is causing them.) Like many other Users here, I recently bought a new external WD drive. The irony here is that I already own 3 other WD external drives, and they have been running fine for several years on our two Mac computers for photo and backup uses. Not so with this new drive. Following the WD installation steps, I first installed their software WD Drive Utilities and WD Security. And then my confusion started, because I now got the message ‘Error in RAID configuration’, even though I don’t use RAID and had done nothing except plug in the new drive. I ran the WD Drive Utility, Status Check, and my laptop actually crashed! I also saw the new drive mount at first, then spontaneously dismount after a minute or so. I even dismounted the new disk, mounted one of my older disks I have used for several years, and now it reported ‘Error in RAID configuration’, something it had never done before, and when I ran the WD Drive Utility, Status Check, on my older Passport drive my laptop again crashed. Like others here, I wasted a lot of time trying to resolve this, but let me skip all that and get right to what I did to get this new disk (and my old ones) to work correctly again. Solution which worked for me: I uninstalled the WD Drive Utilities software (the entire folder) completely. So far I have not uninstalled the WD Security software, although I have not dared to use it yet and likely never will. To uninstall WD Drive utilities, I used the free app AppCleaner from freemacsoft.net (NOT the app in the Mac App store similarly named App Cleaner; it may work just as well, but I have never used it.) Now that the WD Drive Utility is off my computer, I can use the new WD Passport and all my older Passport drives. I have run Apple’s Disk Utility, Verify, numerous times on the new drive, and using Carbon Copy Cloner I have cloned up to 340 GB to the new Passport drive, followed by Verifying it, without errors or any of the symptoms listed above. WD versions for me were:  WD Drive Utilities 2.0.2.18, which folder contained WDDriveUtilityHelper 1.0.0.16. I hope this helps others on this Forum.

  • IMac beeps once before entering sleep mode

My iMac 24 inch has started to beep once before entereing sleep mode. The LED thinks blinks whilst it is asleep, which I assume is normal. Is this indicative of a hardware fault? I understand that a single beep on startup indicates a ram problem.

If you listen carefully, you may find this beep is
coming from the hard drive, not the speakers (plug
headphones in and find out if it still makes the
    beep).
Some hard drives make this beep if they have a
re-positioned write, which is a non-fatal error. You
can usually reformat to re-allocate the block and
stop the error, or you can live with it.//
    Hi
Yes you're correct, it doesn't come from speakers. It not makes the same faint beep (rather like a heart monitor blip) when closing down and always after the screen has gone blank. I have noticed that if you put a CD-ROM in the DVD drive and its still spinning when you put it into sleep mode you don't get the sound.

Glad you found the answer.  But something seems wrong.  FCP should be able to assign the scratch disk to your startup drive.  It's not advisable, but it should be possible.  You might want to try and figure out what's going on before what ever's going on cause other problems.

  • Disk Won't Unmount in Disk Utility

I have a WD Passport external hard drive. When I plug it into my macbook pro via USB it does not show up so I went to disk utility to erase and re-format the hard drive as this has fixed the same issue in the past. However, when I try to erase the external hard drive in disk utility I get an error message stating that the disk cannot be unmounted. Please advise on steps I can take to fix this issue such that I can erase + re-format the hard drive so it will show up in my finder again. Thanks for the help.

You could try using diskutil. This is a command line utility to manage your mounted disks:
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/05/13/mount-unmount-drives-from-the-command-line-in-mac -os-x/
be sure to close all other applications before trying to unmount as if they're accessing the disk it will be considered busy.
there is also a force option you can use as a last ditch attempt.

  • Time Machine Backups disk not automatically unmounting after backup completes in Lion

I am using Time Machine over WiFi on a 3rd party USB drive shared as an AirDisk through an Airport Extreme router. Ever since switching to Lion (clean install), I have noticed that the Time Machine backup disk will not automatically unmount after a backup is completed. This creates a problem when my MacBook Pro comes back from sleep. Specifically, the WiFi notification icon in the Finder toolbar indicates that WiFi is connected, even though it's not connected to a network, and I am unable to connect to any networks for what seems like several minutes until the Time Machine backups disk disappears from the desktop and WiFi actually connects.
Since the disk was not cleanly unmounted, Time Machine then keeps complaining that the sparse bundle file is locked and cannot be mounted every time it tries to do a backup. I have to either disconnect/reconnect the USB drive physically from the router, or restart the router every time this happens to resolve the issue. That is getting really annoying to have to do every time. I suppose I could manually unmount the Time Machine disk after every backup but it's ridiculous to have to do that every time I want to put the computer to sleep.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue and is there a fix?

For others who might be having this problem - I was able to resolve it by connecting my backup disk to my mac via USB, completely erasing it, and starting over from a new backup. Disk Utility was not reporting any errors when I verified the disk, but I went ahead and repartitioned it and started fresh. The disk now automatically unmounts after backups complete.

  • 1 GB Gone in 15m - Disk Space Ticking Away Before My Eyes

(I have searched the forums here and elsewhere to the best of my ability, and haven't found a discussion of rapid space loss like that here. Forgive me if I've overlooked, and thank you for pointing me in the right direction.)
My disk space is disappearing before my eyes. In the time it tooke me to right the sentence, the count went from 14.77 GB to 14.72. It's only that much because I've been moving things off the drive to create more space. Earlier it ticked all the way down to 65mb, and I couldn't start the computer anymore. I've looked at various threads about freeing space, and I'm applying those suggestions, but the problem is that the space is disappearing almost as fast as I can clear it. I used Whatsize (paid, non-appstore version), and didn't see any enormous strange folders. I did notice that, back when I was at 65mb, Disk Utility showed the disk as having 999 GB on it, while Whatsize said 984.
Any help would be very appreciated.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Wrong Posting getting done by RERAPP before RERAIV in RE-FX
After doing posting through RERAPP, system is picking other paid transactional detail while creation of RE Invoice.
Say... Rs. 1000/- has been posted on 11 March 2011 by RERAPP, in between party has paid Rs. 500/- on 15 March 2011, while creation of Invoice by RERAIV on 20 March 2011, instead of Rs. 1000/- Invoice, system is showing Rs. 1500/- Invoice.
    How to rectify this?

    Hi,
This is no the right forum for this message. It should have been in Real Estate Forum. As far as your problem goes, when ur are running the tcode RERAIV, there is an option of putting the posting run ID. Whenever there is a posting through RERAPP a posting run ID is generated. If you pass the same in the RERAIV. The system will not pick any other value.
    Hope this helps..

  • I start my macbook air up and a file comes up with a question mark. When I go to Disk Utility I go to update things or erase everything and my disks don't show up or anything. Anyone know what to do?

I start my macbook air up and a file comes up with a question mark. When I go to Disk Utility I go to update things or erase everything and my disks don't show up or anything. Anyone know what to do?

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How to adjust time before Mac sleeps?

I recently started with Mountain Lion and can't find a way to set the amount of time before the computer goes to sleep.
I looked in System Preferences -> Energy Saver  and it has a slider to set the time before turning off the display and a box to keep the computer from sleeping but nothing to set the time before it sleeps?
I'd like to know when my computer will go to sleep and sometimes I may have it doing something like copying a large amount of data from one drive to another or running a batch process and a large number of photographs where I need the computer up and running for a few hours.
Is it possible to adjust the time before the Mac sleeps in Mountain Lion?  I used to do it in Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Hi Eric.  No, it doesn't look like that.  It looks like this (attached screen shot).
    I'm using OSX 10.8.5

  • What I should do if hard disk don't have enough space on macbook air

I have a pop up message box said " your hard disk don't have enough free space" when I try to do solfware update. What should I do? How can I delete some file on my hard disk?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
