Disks on Desktop

What gives with all these disks on my desktop?
-Gmail Notifier
-Google Earth
-MSN Messenger
-Adobe Reader
-Firefox
It seems whenever I download a third party program, it's not saved as an application, but as a seperate disk on my desktop. Why? It's clutter, and I'd like to file it away somewhere. I can't get rid of them without losing them completely, and when I try to file them, they are filed as an alias. Please help.

OK, found the answer on the forum. What happened to the days when the apps installed themselves? It must be the slow windowization of Mac.

  • Problems accessing Time Capsule disk on Desktop

I'm having problems connecting to my Time Capsule (used as a NAS shared disk) from my Snow Leopard machine. (If it makes any difference) I don't use it for Time Machine backups.
If I click on the Time Capsule in Shared in Finder's sidebar it will access the disk and I can access the files on it OK. If I click on the Time Capsule icon on the desktop I get the following error message:
The alias "Time Capsule" can't be opened because the original item can't be found.
The only thing on the Desktop is the Time Capsule icon as a mounted disk, not an alias of it.
I also get this error message if I open a Finder window and go to Computer (the very top icon) in the sidebar and then try to open Time Capsule from there. I've also noticed that I can't drag the Time Capsule share from the desktop or Finder window into the Devices section of the Finder sidebar. It won't let me do this.
I have a Mac mini running Leopard and don't experience any of these problems. I can also drag the Time Capsule share from the desktop or Finder window into the Devices section of the Finder sidebar without any problems.
Is this a Snow Leopard bug? If not can anyone help?

I'm having the same problem since upgrading the Snow Leopard. There's another thread that discusses a possible solution but is not yet solved: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10115033

  • How to remove OS X 10.9 Install Disk from desktop

Since installing Yosemite overtime I restart my system I get an "OS X 10.9 Install Disk" icon on my desktop.  I can eject it but I want it removed entirely.  How is that done?

Stupid auto-correct.  The question should read:
Since installing Yosemite EVERY time I restart my system I get an "OS X 10.9 Install Disk" icon on my desktop.  I can eject it but I want it removed entirely.  How is that done?

  • Visualize Ram / disk usage desktop application

    Hey everyone,
I want to experiment with visualizing realtime ram usage / disk usage in the desktop background, it should also be a bit interactive (when the user moves his mouse the color could change for example) i want to start very basic.
Can someone point me in the right direction how to begin this? I can program in C#/asp.net, i saw some f# examples but i don't even know how to run them :)
Tx so much for any guidance.
    Borrie

    Hello Borrie,
you can use the PerformanceCounter class to get current RAM usage and disk usage(see
    [1] for more information).
For the visualization, you can use the DataVisualizetion package from the WPF ToolKit [2].
There is a sample project about visualizing ram usage at

  • Hard disks in desktop

the icons of the hard disks or another external disks I connecto to my macbook pro does not appear in the desktop, what can I do to make them appear?

Go to: Finder / Finder Preferences / General and check the box for Hard Disks.
Also if they are not showing up in the Finder Sidebar, select Sidebar in the Preference and check the Hard Dick box.

  • Will not stay installed. Always shows install window and disk on desktop.

Downloaded and installed Firefox last fall on new Mac Air, OS 10.9.5. Installed as directed, same way I have always done. When I dragged the icon to the dock, it seemed fine, but next time I used the Mac, it appeared as a '?', not the actual icon. Every time I click on the 'icon' in the dock, I get a bar " Verifying ". When it finished, I get the Mac window warning me it was downloaded from the net, do I want to open it ? I MUST click on 'open ' to get Firefox to run.
Then it shows me the 'Install firefox ' window. So I have to go through install again, drag into application folder. I get another window telling me I am trying install an old version. Do I want to replace the one I have, keep both or cancel. I cancel. I can eject the disk and use Firefox after this. But every time I quit Firefox, close the Mac or Restart, I get to do this all over again. Every single time. VERY frustrating. Have installed all updates as they come along, so far has made no change to this nonsense. Used it on my old Mac for a decade with no problems, now this ?
I just saw there is yet another update past my version of 31.0, I will install that, but no other updates have fixed this issue so far.

Just an update to the original question. I tried to update to the next version of Firefox, but I can't. Says it can't connect to the server and times out. Tried a number of times, same result.

  • In a mess, now Cannot See external disk on desktop

I purchased an external 2Big 4TB drive which has two physical 2TB drives in it. I got it all set up and fine then went in to disk utility and the options for formatting were not there and other choices were greyed out no matter if I selected the drive in Disk Utility menu to the right, or the drive that was under 'nested' with the same  name. I made an error by trying to create a drive by choosing the '+' sign which created another drive in the Utility window, but then when I deleted it it deleted the whole drive and now it will not come back, even after restarting. I've created a bigger mess than the one I was in in the first place.
Can someone please help me get the drive back and then to get to where I can choose the option to JBOD or just a bunch of drives so I can see the two individual drives and use them as two 2TB drives.
    TIA,
    Ken

Yes, It is Sunday so the HDD manufacturer's support is home and not at work. They have support on regular business hours. I left a message on the voice system and also tried to contact by email, but I'm sure their email help is also enjoy the Sunday off and answers on regular business hours.
I was thinking that my problem is more with the Mac software 'Disk Utility' and my inability to understand how to accomplish what I wanted to do. Since I believe Disk Utility is an Apple software that comes with the Mac I was hoping that someone could help me on the Apple forums.

  • Hard disk on desktop

In Tiger I used to be able to have my hard drives/external drives, etc. not show up on my desktop but rather in the Finder window only. I can't for the life of me figure out how to recreate that setting in Leopard!
    Regards.

    Hi James
I don't have Leopard on my Mac at present but, the setting you are looking for is in Finder preferences in Tiger.
Apologies if you have tried this

My airport utility is version 6.2, so there is no "Disconnect all users".
You can download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion if you want the ability to "Disconnect all users".
This article will tell you how:

  • "Time Machine Backups" Folder/Disk on Desktop.

Any way to get rid of it?
Background: I'm running a Network Drive for my TM location. The drive is connected directly to the Airport Extreme. When I go into TM, a pop-up comes up saying connecting to Backup location, then mounts the "Time Machine Backups" onto the desktop. My backup drive location is already mounted on the desktop. Why the redundancy? Is there a way to "eject" it automatically after I exit TM, or is this something I'm going to have to live with taking up space on my desktop?
    Thanks

How about Finder>preferences>General and customize the +Show these items on Desktop+

How can I restore contacts from Entourage for Mac?

Two ways I know how, first is drag them into Address Book, select all of them and drag them to Address Book and you're done. The second way is to create VCard for each contact and use the Import function or drag them into Address Book.
Of course you need both Address Book and Entourage running. Time Machine isn't designed to import files from one application into another.

  • Why can't I place disk icons on my desktop?

Why can't I place disk icons on my desktop?
I installed OSX Lion, version 10.7.1 from the App Store onto the internal disk of my MacBookPro which was cloned to an external FW800 GoFlexDesk drive. I booted from that external drive, ran the disk utility to erase and then repartition my internal drive so that I would have a "clean" installation of Lion. My disk icon (for the internal drive) does not even show in Finder windows. In Snow Leopard I showed my internal drive, my Time Capsule drives, and any external drives on my desktop as icons. Now these do not even show in Finder. I know they are there, because if I choose the path view option, they are shown when I pick "All My Files" under favorites. I can navigate backwards in the path bar, but still they do not actually allow me to select them or drag them to the desktop. In Snow Leopard, it was an option to show disks on desktop in general system preferences, but I find that option no where in Lion! What simple little thing am I missing?

  • Copying files from Zip Disks that have desktop files?

I'd like to copy files from a bunch of old zip disks to my external HD. Many of the disks have desktop files. How do I copy over the entire contents of the zip disc? When I last tried this awhile back it seemed cumbersome to deal with those desktop files. Was I missing a simple solution?

    Hi Lee,
Open the Zip Disk in the Finder, Select ALL, then while holding the Command key down, click on the Desktop file to deselect it, then drag the bunch over to where you want to copy them to.

  • Access USB Disk from Win XP connected to Router

    Hello,
My Airport express is plugged into cable modem router and so is a desktop running Win XP.
Another 2 machines Macbook and Winxp laptop can access AE router, internet and the USB disk connected to AE.
I am having trouble accessing the USB disk from desktop which does not have wifi and is hooked directly to cable modem router. I tried assigning a static IP to Airport Express and that didnt help either.
    Any ideas?
    hhol

    Welcome to the discussions!
You posted in the AirPort Extreme forum, but your post indicates that you have an AirPort Express.
If you have an AirPort Express, this device does not support hard drives at the USB port. Only compatible printers are supported.

  • No disk drive

Hello. I have a copy of Photoshop Elements 8.0, but I have no disk drive. What do you recommend I do? the other computers I have access to prevent downloading anything.

Get a mahcine that has disk drive and copy the contents of the disk to desktop of that machine and then use the usb or flash drive to move the data from that machine to your machine and try installing PSE 8.
    Hope that Helps!
