Disks spinning lots after upgrade
I have a Mac Pro desktop which I just upgraded to OS X Lion. The disks are spinning a lot, there's a lot of activity -- which is making the system slow. The version I have is:
11.0.0 Darwin Kernel Version 11.0.0: Sat Jun 18 12:57:44 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1699.22.73~1/RELEASE_I386 i386 i386
Doing a ps -ax doesn't (to me) show much; running top shows a lot of sleeping processes. I expected to see "fsck" or something. I do have a secondary 1TB disk, and so I wonder if there is some filesystem maintenance/conversion happening. This did not happen on my other Mac Pro, which is 64bit.
I will leave it to spin overnight, but I'll be doubly concerned if it's still doing this in the morning.
If anyone can provide some details, that would be appreciated.

I've had this same problem, but not with my MacBook Pro. It's my 2011 iMac. The spinning wheel happens a lot. I know this is a Lion problem because it never happend with SnowLeopard. I hope the powers to be can figure it out.

ICloud drive disk still full AFTER upgrading to 1TB storage space
Hello,
I just bought the $19.99/month 1TB iCloud storage plan so that I can back up all 800GB of my iMac data to my iCloud Drive. However, when I drag and drop my files over to my iCloud Drive in Finder, it says disk full. Am I doing something wrong? There should definitely be more than enough room. I have also checked to make sure my storage plan was indeed upgraded correctly in iCloud management and there is definitely a full 1TB of available space.
I have even tried backing up my files to my iCloud Drive using Time Machine. My understanding was that with the Yosemite 10.10.2 update, iCloud Drive should now show in Time Machine's preferences as a back up drive option. But after upgrading to 10.10.2, I still do not see it in there as an option.

No, iCloud Drive is meant for the working copies of your documents - to store them on a central location in iCloud and update them on all your devices. The shadow copies are there, to guarantee, that you can access the documents, when you are offline. See: iCloud Drive FAQ
Sounds like using Time Machine to backup a single copy to my iCloud Drive would achieve this right? But as I said in my original post, I'm not seeing iCloud Drive as a back up target disk option in preferences.
Time Machine can backup your iCloud Drive, but it cannot backup to iCloud drive. Perhaps you misunderstood, what the latest Yosemite update meant for Time Machine: (see this link:

Permissions and constant spinning ball after Upgrade
Hey Guys,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard last thursday and ever since I get the spinning ball when I try to execute more complex file operations.
e.g.
- Unpacking a large (1,8GB+) with stuffit -> spinning ball and freezes for more than 5 minutes
- Deleting a lot of files (2,4 million) -> complete freeze, woke up after 45 minutes
I checked with the permissions and it fixed 50+ broken permissions plus it is unable to fix two warnings: "the suid-file .. was changed and will not be fixed"
The diskcheck utility discovered no problem with the drive.
Further symptoms include:
Firefox makes the system freeze for minutes on end.
Mail crashes without warning.. system freeze ensues.
All these problems only came up after the upgrade to snow leopard.
I am thinking of doing a time machine rollback to leopard.

I am having this problem too! Whenever I try to launch any application, the rainbow ball will show up and keep spinning until 'no respond' from the application. Then I have to use Force Quit to quit the application.
I have tried to reinstall Snow Leopard but it does not help. Same problem persist.
Now, I have no other choice but to reinstall Leopard and see how it goes.
Really a waste of time! Even updated to 10.6.1 also did not rectify the problem.
Hope APPLE will do something about this ASAP.

Before upgrading to Mavericks proceed to make the most recent backup ( as often recommended as prevention against faults ), with M. Lion and Time M. on an external LaCie 500 GB HD . After the update without problems , proceed to restore iPhoto library as Mavericks and not on what my surprise is not in the backups made , have disappeared . Are only backups that you have made and the new OS with the new version I just bought iPhoto 9.5.1 for Mavericks. So do not get nothing but lose money because the new version does not seem to add anything new , but they are adapted to the new OS
Also in M. Time preferences , options appear as "excluded items back up " a series of folders that were not before, not excluded by me but by the process of upgrading to Mavericks, even folders whose names appear as not exist , then were changed months ago , now appear in M. Time Options to be excluded from the backup with their old names ( folders located on the MacPro in other HD 's connected HD different OS and different LaCie HD ) . I also remember that after several backups performed by Mavericks notice that appears Time M. will delete old backups to continue making new copies ( not allowed to say no) , even though the backup HD LaCie is showing more than 20 GB unoccupied.
Where have gone those backups M.Lion ? . What is the best way to recover them, and that not all recovery software are equal ? . Is it best to disconnect the MacPro the LaCie HD and wait for Apple to fix it ?

MatiasFespAnyone that has used a LaCie, especially D2 or what you have, has run into the problem of...
weak power supply adapter, firmware on the FW bridge issue, failures, or the more common "discharge all the current on your cables and bus by unplugging everything" fix once or more.
Those are all foreign to me!
And I am using 6 FW drives regularly and a couple that are just emergency boot drives updated monthly.
For all I know, you might be able to throw your old drives into cases and get some more good use from them as well.
I prefer to not rely on a built-in bridge to do RAID, and to use Apple Disk Utility or another program like www.softraid.com to do so.
Depending on how much use those drive cases get, do they get just warm, very warm or hot, during operations? or just for backup?
And if you want RAID for editing or scratch or performance, look into eSATA. And cases with fans, ventilation, and that keep the drives to a reasonable temperature (below 44ºC and hopefully in the 30's). -

28 MB Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Is anyone else having iPhoto spinning ball after upgrading to the 27''
iPhoto has become really sluggish and clumsy in editing, transiting to the next photo viewing, even sizing the window. All this since changing from the 24 to the 27. No new app/internet/ add-ons. Deleted the iPhoto preferences. Using an ethernet cable rather than wireless (although it is enabled). And yes there is the flash choppy-slowdown and Safari intermittent sluggishness too. I migrated all my previous settings. Finally I know this isn't the iPhoto discussion but thought its inclusion here was justified relative to the new iMac. I'm really relying on the next 10.6 point upgrade as a resolution. Thanks. d

Explorer.exe crashing a LOT after upgrade to 9860
Yes, I've already installed the single patch from Windows Update and rebooted. Twice. It's happening a lot. Just wondering if there's anything I can do to resolve or workaround.
There is a driver update for my Intel HD Graphics 4600, but it fails to install saying my system does not meet the minimum requirements to install. Doh!
Any ideas?

How long should program disks be kept after upgrading?
I am currently using Adobe Creative Suites CS3. I have my PageMaker disks back to version 5.0, and my PageMill disks back to version 5.0, from when I first purchased them. To go from PageMill to GoLive, I needed to keep the PageMill disks for the serial numbers. Now I have all of the disks all the way back - PageMaker, PageMill, GoLive, Dreamweaver, CS, CS2. How long do I need to keep these disks? I'd love to be able to give/throw some of them away. Thanks.

WIFI intermittent connectivity issues after upgrading to iOS 8.0.2
Hi,
WIFI seems to be dropping a lot after upgrading to iOS 8.0.2. I even took the iPad back to Apple and they replaced it with a new one with iOS7, which was working fine, then the same problem resurfaced after upgrading to iOS 8.0.2. I can't use my iPad in the evening at all.
My iPhone is fine after the upgrade though.
Clearly an iOS8 software issuse on iPads?
ThanksSimilar thing happened to me.. Seems like the bug has not been solved.. I managed to restore to iOS 8 and this resolved the issue, at least for the time-being!

we have these patches 7012242,7031906,5961654,5632264 installed on the agent home.
I have also disabled the instance health metrics for all the 10g target db on this host.
Anybody has any idea how to resolve this . This is becoming quite annoying .

Just to comfort you, and yes we do monitor 10.2.0.3 instances. This comes from the emagent.trc on one of many rdbms server. The same is not found on other servers running 10.2.0.3 instances. The time coincide with an agent crash on this server. Keeping an eye on this thread while trying to find out what it is related to.

After upgrading to Yosemite on my macbook pro,the spinning wheel doesn't go away.I have reset the SMC and the PRAM but the problem still persists.Can anyone please help

Constant spinning beach balls after upgrading to Lion
I upgraded to Lion on a mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Ever since I have been dealing with constant spinning beach balls every time I log in to anything, type, browse on both Firefox and Safari, or scroll up and down a page. I have 8GB RAM, have reset the PRAM, restarted often, all is completely updated. Anyone else have this problem and what to do about it? It's extremely annoying and hard to get anything done! Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer. -
Disk re-starts after spin-down

After a recent -Syu, my unused spare disk re-starts after it is stopped in /etc/rc.local by /usr/bin/sdparm -C stop /dev/sda. The upgrade included udev, initscripts, klibc-udev and yslog-ng. If I do /usr/bin/sdparm -C stop /dev/sda again in a terminal, the disk stops and starts again, running unnecessarily.
Any ideas please?

OK, I tried using hdparm -Y but I still have the same problem, in fact the disk starts even sooner, right after it starts spin-down! (with sdparm it starts after it completely stops spinning). I have tried hdparm -S 1 but there was no effect. I don't know if it will spin-down after a longer delay than the 5 sec specified though. -
Critical Hard Disk Free Space Error on Lenovo G500 after upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1
I encountered an error with my harddrive after upgrading my Lenovo G500 from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. The error is coming up under the Lenovo Solution Center. The error reads "Some partition in your hard drive has less than 9.5% of its capacities. It suggests to click on Fix Options; System; Storage Devices. Then it displays Internal Hard Drive ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB.The solution center now displays 8 different partitions labled as follows:

DanI got an error when i tried disk repair ("the underlying task reported failure on exit - 1 HFS volume could not be repaired, 1 volume could not be repaired"). Is that the source of my problem?

If DU can't fix it after a couple more tries then, your best bets are DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

This last one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD. -
after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.
